Book Description

Praise for the first edition of Multiple Streams of Internet Income

"If ever the world needed some help to succeed on the Internet, this is the moment. Robert Allen's new book is just in time to save the day."
—Jack Trout, President, Trout & Partners, Ltd.author of Differentiate or Die

"Earning money . . . serious money, is no different than piloting a jet aircraft or baking an apple pie. You have to learn how and you must understand what you're doing. Robert Allen is a master flight instructor if you want your income to soar. He knows what ninety-eight percent of our population have proven they don't know. Read this book and follow his advice. In a relatively short period of time, you will become wealthy and be amazed at how much free time you have when you never have to worry about money."
—Bob Proctor, author of the bestseller You Were Born Rich

"The only thing better than the promise in the title of Robert Allen's wonderful Multiple Streams of Internet Income is the enlightening information in the book itself. And the only thing better than the book is the life a reader can lead after reading the book and taking the actions that are suggested. Of all the books I've read about earning money online, this one tops the list for a multiple stream of reasons."
—Jay Conrad Levinson, author of the Guerrilla Marketing series

"Robert Allen has done it again! Multiple Streams of Internet Income is an exciting look into the many creative things you can do with your money in today's new economy. I can't wait to use its wisdom!"
—Ken Blanchard, coauthor of The One Minute Manager® and Big Bucks!

"Information is less expensive to manufacture, promote, and ship than hard products such as running shoes and CDs. Robert Allen shares how you can apply Internet technology to selling information: books, reports, articles, seminars, speeches, and consulting. There are a lot of fluff books on e-commerce. This one is detailed, accurate, and readable. Multiple Streams of Internet Income is not just a book, it's a complete and hands-on course in advanced commerce. Congratulations."
—Dan Poynter, author of The Self-Publishing Manual

The internet marketing world is so overcrowded that it may be impossible to make consistant returns. This book does have decent info for beginers but i doubt anyone will get rich quick on the techniques described in this book. save your money and invest.

4 out of 5 stars Inspiring.......2007-09-11

Over the years I have enjoyed reading everything Allen writes. In this book he builds on his idea of making money from multiple sources, and focuses of course on Internet business ideas.

Allen spends too much time, in my opinion, discussing the creation of an email list, which you then use to send ads to. This is fine for a long term approach to Internet marketing, but won't help you make money this week.

I first learned of the term Multiple Stream Of Income from Robert Allen the No Money Down guy. He pretty much coined the phrase all the way to the bank. I read his book a few years ago, it was the number one best seller on The New York Times Best Seller's list. I was so thrilled to get my hands on it I just knew that this was the long awaited manuscript that we marketers wanted to give it a test drive.

It was a good read, however it had too many twist and turns and it cost a bit much at the time to implement his methods from just one website, and it was not the results I was looking for. I knew there had to be a better way for us new marketers to reach that illusive extra income stream.

This Book Inspired Me For Many Years To Seach For A MSI Website:

I begin to wonder, can you actually make multiple streams of income online? I continued my search for the missing pieces of the MSI puzzle that would put it altogether; With the many product offers that promises you the world if you would try this program, and use it with this technique, and you'll surely be on your way to riches.

After several years of online seeking, I can now say I've been to the mountain top of internet marketing offers, and what I have come down with is this; there are many claims being made about multiple streams of income online that you can use right now in your marketing campaign to a steady flow of extra income. I found this unique website with multiple streams of income you can get from Google, Ebay, Clickbank, CJ; etc. All from one cool little website. I have studied the likes of Tim Knoxs, Brad Callen, Mike Falsaime; etc, and a host of other top online experts in this field of multiple streams of income and their proven systems, and what I have found will surprise you.

Don believes that less than 5% of the marketers are making it online, and 95% of the programs online are a waste of money. There are no more secrets, just the facts. If you are focus you'll learn one of many proven marketing tools [...]

1 out of 5 stars how to mass spam and talk about yourself!.......2007-02-23

Reading this was an ENORMOUS waste of my time. Half way through the book, I realized that I didn't know anymore about making money online than I had before. All Allen does throughout this book is talk about how great he is and how he did this, that and the other thing. He talks about all these so called wonderful marketing strategies, when really all he's doing is promoting spam. I'm not even ON his mailing list and I'm getting [...] from him in my inbox. It's disgraceful. I do not recommend you waste your money on this book.

1 out of 5 stars Technique but no cookie.......2007-10-19

As someone who has spent over a decade on the Internet, I understand the fundamentals of the building of a tool or the utilization of a tool that can be used to generate money online. If you understand this too, then skip this one.

This book is for the complete novice. BUT if that novice buys it, they will regret it because they will spend hours and hours toiling to get to an expert level of understanding on how to build and utilize a system such as this and then be faced with the same outcome I was.

There is absolutely no recommendation for products and services that do well in this environment. All of the check copies posted in the book were dated from 2005 which most folks know was the hay-day of the search marketplace and literally was the first year in existence for the pay-per-click marketplace. Today's marketplace, especially in the affiliate realm, is extremely more competitive largely because of books like this. There was no effort expended in addressing this competitive pressure and the resulting gap reduction between affiliate commission and PPC bids.

At the end of the day, folks, there are no easy millions. You must be ahead of a trend like Mr. Borelli, to exploit such an opportunity. Once the rest of the world has caught up, the only thing you can hope to do is ... you guessed it ... sell a book to teach others how to do it.

4 out of 5 stars Basic tools for the online gold rush.......2007-09-06

My experience was similar to that of "gordo the lordo." Plenty of clicks but just a few orders. Getting clicks isn't hard. What kind of clicks? That's the $1,000,000 question.

As a search engine advertiser, your task is to capture the clicks of consumers who have made a buying decision or are very close. These clicks will make money for you. The clicks of people who are "just browsing" will cost you money. You have to be a student of online search behavior.

You capture money-making clicks by finding highly relevant keywords and writing focused ads. How hard can it be? Get your ads up and running, tweak them, and watch the money roll in. You only need basic English skills and common sense. A degree in advertising or English is not going to help.

I would encourage anyone to try it because you may discover that you have the knack. By spending $500 or so, you should be able to get an idea how well you might do. Don't make the mistake I made, which was to let my ads capture several hundred clicks without getting any orders. I kept thinking "the orders will kick in." They didn't. Stop your ads after 200-300 clicks and wait for results. (Even 50 clicks are too many with retail sites.) You can either tweak the ad (if it's close to break-even) or abandon it and try something else. Tweaking wouldn't have helped my ads, which earned pennies for every dollar spent on clicks.

You are playing the keyword market on Google. Some keywords sell for $20 per click and more. Search engine advertisers don't get caught up in keyword "bubbles." They are only after potent "value" keywords that sell for 25 cents or less.

The keyword market is like a gold rush. Everywhere you look the ground is torn up by hordes of stampeding prospectors. You wander far and wide hoping to find a stone that hasn't been turned. How many thousands of other guys are out there trying the same thing? Good luck.

You never know. You might have the knack. Affiliate Millions gives you everything you need to know to get started. When I joined my first affiliate program and set up my first ads, I had the book open and followed it not step-by-step but word-for-word. It's just the kind of "excruciating" detail a beginner needs.

Mr. Borelli explains how to evaluate the earnings potential of an affiliate program. The profit, or course, depends on your revenue per click. An adgroup for $20 books may not be the way to go.

Should you actually make money, there is a chapter on campaign finance. You have to manage your cash flow to optimize performance. If another book on online advertising has this kind of chapter, I haven't seen it.

Mr. Borelli has set up the Affiliate Millions website for "prospectors." The only item listed for sale is the book. There is a free monthly newsletter. There are no ads. Mr. Borelli answers questions on the site's discussion board. If you are at all familiar with the "get rich online" racket you know how exceptional this is. Such sites are usually crammed with ads and have little useful information.

Mr. Borelli's advice is a bit sketchy and vague. That's because it has to be. If Mr. Borelli were to disclose his winning formula, everyone would copy him and he would be out of business within hours. All he can do is point people in right direction. Within that proviso, he provides clear and valuable information.

Mr. Borelli makes no promises that prospectors will get rich. He merely suggests that it is possible. He ends the opening chapter with "Take it step-by-step and read the chapters that follow, and you'll stand a good chance of becoming an Affiliate Millionaire yourself." If he starts the book by saying your chances are practically nil, no one will continue reading.

Like "gordo," I'm amazed that anyone could make millions at this. A million dollars in a year is $2,700 a day. You would have to consider yourself pretty successful with $2,700 a day in SALES, never mind commissions. You would have to strike it rich with multiple million-dollar campaigns. You would have to come up with new ones all the time.

Think of the millions in revenue Mr. Borelli is generating for the companies he advertises for. They should throw a party for him.

1 out of 5 stars Didn't work for me.......2007-08-21

I tried the principles in this book. I set up some ads for a variety of products and different companies through Commission Junction and was, at first, delighted that I was getting a good amount of clicks. I was confident the ads were good enough because of some experience I've had in the past writing copy.

However, after over 250 clicks to major websites that boasted a large earnings per click, I got one sale and a large $ loss. The ads were good enough to catch the people's attention, but no one was buying.

I think this is a tough way to go at it. A website might be the better way to go. I am amazed that anyone could make any money doing this, never mind millions.

4 out of 5 stars Direct and Immediately Useful.......2007-07-24

I was seeking a detailed, practical and thorough "how-to" approach to build internet-based revenue. This book filled the bill. It covered all key facets of the approach - particularly helpful for a layperson - as well as for someone with web-based experience (as am I). I have yet to test the specific recommendations. The book was solid.

2 out of 5 stars Basic start but could leave you broke.........2007-07-12

Its true that money can be made by signing up for affiliate programs and marketing them on pay per click search engines. However, its possible to lose a great deal of money and this book doesn't do a good enough job helping people calculate the risks. For example, the author indicates he markets Amazon products. Amazon on its basic associate program pays 4%. A $20.00 book pays a comission of .80 cents. But in pay per click advertising a marketer can pay 30, 40 cents and even a dollar depending on the keywords. In a test marketing the new Harry Potter book (book 5) I spent over 9.00 in ppc ads that resulted in 4 sales. The click thru to sale was 13%... which isn't bad. The point is, I earned only about $2, but spent over $9.00 to earn it (a loss of $7.00). The author doesn't explain how to choose affiliate programs in terms of cost vs. payoff. Anyone who reads this book will get some basic information, but before spending money on ppc advertising they'd be better off buying The Ultimate Guide to Google Adwords which does a better job explaining keywords, writing effective ads and managing campaigns.

2 out of 5 stars Good information, terribly written.......2007-03-09

If you partner with Microsoft in sales, this is a must read. But it's also a maddening read becuase the same topics are reviewed over, and over, and over, and over again. It's like the author had to make a certain word count, so they just kept repeating themselves to make the magic number. I would recommend you digest the material over a period of weeks rather than a day or two. It's certainly not a page turner. . .

5 out of 5 stars Serious Momentum with Microsoft.......2006-05-25

I had the privilege in attending a "Partnering with Microsoft" presentation and I am reading Ted Dinsmore's book now. Since the meeting with Ted Dinsmore, our organization is adopting many of the techniques revealed in his book and our corporation now has serious momentum with Microsoft. I highly recommend reading the book, and if the opportunity arises to meet Ted, don't miss it.

5 out of 5 stars DANCING WITH MICROSOFT.......2005-08-28

Within 21 years of becoming the most powerful company therein, Microsoft has ascended to the pinnacle of the IT industry. Authors by Ted Dinsmore and Edward O'Connor have done an outstanding job of telling the readership of this book, how by virtue of its own commitment of partnering with other firms, Microsoft has done so to an extent unparalleled by other large companies in the industry.

Dinsmore and O'Connor begin this book by telling you why you should partner with Microsoft. Next, the authors detail the core attributes of Microsoft's culture, organization and strategy, and explain the position of Microsoft's partners in its ecosystem. Then, they build on the responsible understanding of the ecosystem by elucidating the principles of partnering with Microsoft. The authors next focus on the partnering tactics that successful ISVs employ vis-a-vis Microsoft. Dinsmore and O'Connor continue by focusing on the partnering tactics that successful services firms employ vis-a-vis Microsoft. In addition, the authors focus on the partnering tactics that successful resellers employ vis-a-vis Microsoft. Finally, they advance the tactics implicit earlier in the book; that is: how to leverage other Microsoft partners not only to improve your relationship with the company, but to accentuate your firm's success by working productively with other partners in Microsoft's Partner Ecosystem.

With the preceding in mind, the authors have done an excellent job of helping your firm come to terms with Microsoft, to assess and mitigate the risks of partnering, and to pursue and realize the rewards of partnering with this globally successful company. At the end of the day, only by understanding what makes Microsoft tick and how the company thinks and behaves, can your firm be a successful Microsoft partner.

5 out of 5 stars The Inside Scoop on Working with Microsoft.......2005-08-10

A great many companies want to use computers in their business to do something a little bit different than what the programmers originally thought. Many companies do not want to invest, perhaps they cannot invest in their own IT department to understand and develop exactly what they need.
Microsoft understands this very well. Consequently many of their products are designed so that someone else can take their products and make it function as the final customer needs.

A perfect example is a database. A company wants to keep track of something. A database is the ideal way to do this. But does anyone at that company understand enough about database design to implement the database, design the forms and reports to make it easy enough for the clerks in the company to use, and then train the clerks?

The result is Microsoft's partnering philosophy. If you will set up your company to take Microsofts basic software and make it work as the final customer wants, then Microsoft wants to work with you, will supply you with support and leads, give you all kinds of advantages.

The alternative in the IT industry is to do your own thing, perhaps in competition with Microsoft. History tends to say that this isn't all that wise.

The authors fo this book are experts in working with Microsoft. In this book they give you the whole scoop, including the bad points (Suppose the customer really should use Linux!).

I found that the author knew his material well and really delivered what he promised in the title. In addition, he practiced what he preached by using the marketing strategies that were described, such as offering a good deal of important material through bonuses rather than having the material in the book, by participating in affiliate programs and making money from simply driving traffic and sales to other sites and products that will be needed for eBook marketing, and by marketing his own products. I have since been studying the marketing strategies of successful e-companies and I see the strategies described in this eBook being used extensively. I learnrd a great deal from this eBook.

In 1993, Anthony and Paul Tedesco published one of the first 'zines on the Web--the Trincoll Journal (HotWired was the other). Now, a mere seven years later, the Tedesco brothers have produced the "first-ever database of pay-and-policy information for more than 200 paying online markets." Whew--we've come a long way, fast. The Tedescos' Online Markets for Writers is an indispensable resource for anyone wanting to write for the Web, not to mention anyone wondering how to recycle all those yellowing clips. While some of the book's listings are more thorough than others, all include basic contact information, and most describe a given publication's editorial needs. The best listings offer pointers from editors, as well as inside scoop from contributors (it would be nice if there were more of the latter). Duly armed, you'll know what you're up against when you submit to Epicurious ("We have never accepted an unsolicited submission"), Family.com ("It will be a rare exception if we respond at all"), or Business Week Online ("Not worth all the aggravation," says one writer).

Accompanying the listings are hints on writing for the Internet (make it short and personal, and provide links); profiles of Internet writers and editors; a sample Internet writing contract; the contract the National Writers Union would like to see used; and the Tedescos' 10 favorite places to be published online. At book's end, online writers and editors divulge their favorite Web sites--as if we needed more excuses to procrastinate.

The problem with all this burgeoning technology, I hear you thinking, is that so much of it is fleeting. By the time a book like this is released, half the data is obsolete. Perhaps. But the Tedescos are one step ahead of you. They plan to update the book via a free e-mail newsletter. --Jane Steinberg

3 out of 5 stars Good advice, but hopelssly outdated.......2003-03-03

The Tedesco brothers have written a book with good advice, useful infomation, and many links to sites using freelance writers. Some of the information is still valid, and for that it is worth reading. However, the book is hopelessly outdated, as the Interent is constantly changing.

5 out of 5 stars Phenomenal Book For Writers.......2002-05-27

-This book covers all the basics you need for writing online; the how to's of query letters, electronic rights, pay rates, contracts, and more. It's informative, well presented, and enjoyable to read. In addition, the authors even have a sense of humor. I've ordered other books on the subject and "Online Markets for Writers" is clearly the best.

-MUCHO THANKS TO THE AUTHORS FOR MAKING THIS INFO AVAILABLE TO EVERYONE!

Best Regards--Dan Murphy

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource.......2002-04-08

This resource for writers is excellent. Funny and well-written, the authors really did their homework. Best of all, updates are available for readers. I heard from the author personally via e-mail. Very nice.

5 out of 5 stars Online Markets For Writers review.......2002-02-26

If you're even remotely serious about writing online, you need this book. The spotlight stories were very informative and the markets section is filled with leads. I lost count of how many markets I found that I'm querying.

5 out of 5 stars Good Information - Simply Presented.......2002-02-26

As a mom of two boys under the age of 4, and a freelance writer , I didn't (and still don't) have a lot of time to devote to researching online markets for possible queries. This book has done all the work for me in a fun and relaxed read. The Tedesco brothers begin the book with all the web-related jargon and skills you need, including a great primer on sending HTML files, followed by a thorough complilation of "paying" online markets. This is one book that serious freelancers must have if you want to break into the online marketplace.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Fun, Informative Read Offering Plenty of Motivation.......2007-10-21

In "Your Portable Empire," Pat O'Bryan does an excellent job of not only explaining ways to make more money online, but also encouraging you to take action using his own unique methods. I enjoyed his straight-to-the-point style as well as his use of personal stories to demonstrate his struggles. If fear is keeping you from taking action, the chapter titled "The Fun Zone" is worth far more than the cost of this book.

2 out of 5 stars Confusing presentation.......2007-10-18

I work at home on the Internet so I'm always interested in books about internet businesses hoping I'll learn some great new tidbit. I didn't get this book, mostly in that it seemed poorly organized. I like things to go in order, step-by-step. But this book didn't really do that. The second chapter is on the "List" which indeed is important, but it seems to me you need a topic, website, and/or product from which to start building the list. If you want to make money online, you might be better off reading Rosalind Gardner's resources, or other books on Internet marketing specifically.

5 out of 5 stars Pat O'Bryan Is The Real Deal.......2007-10-17

I've been a follower, and a fan, of Pat for a couple of years now and I've also had the pleasure of meeting him in person. With so many "fly-by-(cyber)-night" gurus selling the next get rich quick "fad", Pat O'Bryan tells it like it is and doesn't hide behind a phony ego.

In fact, he's amazingly honest (and humble) about his story and how he was able to become one of the internet's most interesting success stories.

The technical side of the book is simple, straighforward, and designed with the beginner in mind.

However, the personal side of the book is timeless and worth 10X the cover price of the book. Pat refers to the "inner game" and brings to light this often ignored aspect of marketing and personal success. This is where beginners, pro's, and everyone in between will draw something valuable out of this book.

If you're a "want something for nothing" type of whiner, go buy the latest get rich junk from the latest guru of the week. And good luck.

But if you're ready to get real, this book is book is a fine addition to your library. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars JUST BOUGHT MY SECOND COPY !.......2007-10-16

TAKE THE TIME TO READ THIS BOOK AND PUT IT INTO ACTION AND YOUR LIFE WILL CHANGE FOREVER.
PAT IS AN HONEST AND STRAIGHT FORWARD INDIVIDUAL IN AN INDUSTRY WHICH IS FAR TO OVERLOADED WITH SLIME.
I SPEAK FROM PERSONAL EXPERIENCE ON THIS ONE.
BUY THIS BOOK !!!

4 out of 5 stars A Good Kick In The Pants..........2007-10-11

I'm always keeping my ear to the ground and looking for internet marketers that write and publish books. So Pat's book was a must read on my list. This book is a great kick in the pants for anyone that is already involved or thinking of becoming involved with internet marketing. It's a fun read, and while it's not the most detailed explanation of building an online business it focuses on real world examples that you can put into practice right away. One of the better 'net marketing' books I have read in quite sometime. Makes me want to go write an ebook! =)

4 out of 5 stars Viable Ideas.......2007-09-13

Internet marketing is an exciting way for home-based entrepreneurs to get started in their own business. Books such as this one provide an excellent resource to learn basic concepts and to validate what you may already know or practice.

I found the information on Google and Yahoo adequate. I beleive the author was attempting to just introduce you to the concept of advertising with Google and Yahoo, as in Google Adwords and Yahoo Sponsored Searches. After grasping the concept of using pay per click advertising, the reader can then go to various online resources to get detailed information straight from the source.

I would recommend this book to people just getting started in Internet marketing. Also, you may want to check out Ron Taylor's book below for information on getting started making money with paid surveys and affiliate marketing.

Make Money Online: My Formula for Online Marketing Success

4 out of 5 stars Not just about eBay.......2006-07-10

Actually this book IS evenly divide between eBay, Yahoo and Google. Chapters 1-11 are about eBay, 12-21 cover Yahoo, and 22-29 are about Google. We found this book VERY helpful for developing e-commerce solutions for existing businesses. It has some formulas to use for computing ROI on AdWords that I found particularly useful.

2 out of 5 stars Book Should Be Called "eBay 101" Instead.......2006-05-30

I was disappointed in this book because it made me believe that it would be about Yahoo! and Google equally with eBay. However, this book was all about eBay with a tiny sprinkling of Yahoo! and Google here and there -- certainly not enough to include Yahoo! and Google in the title of the book. The book has 29 chapters. It doesn't stop talking about eBay until Chapter 21 then resumes its eBay discussion in Chapter 29.

The book should have been called "eBay 101" or "eBay for Not-So-Dumb Dummies." It does have good information for a complete eBay newbie but I would recommend other books for the non-eBay savvy newcomer like Adam Ginsberg's book: How to Buy, Sell, and Profit on eBay or eBay Powerseller Secrets by Debra and Brad Schepp. In fact, those two books I just mentioned alone should be all you need to get started if you want to make money on eBay.

Pass on this book. It's a rip off. The title is not appropriate and designed to deceive people into believing that the book will give you a strong online selling strategy with a successful mix of eBay, Yahoo!, and Google when that isn't the case. It's all about eBay with a few words dropped in here and there about Yahoo! and Google.

5 out of 5 stars Best book to know about ebay online.......2007-03-14

This book was excellent and very informative. At first there was so many to chose from but I am positive I made the right choice. It is not expensive and worth every penny. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in either buying or selling on ebay.

5 out of 5 stars 'SOLD AMERICAN!!!".......2006-02-10

Are you a frequent buyer or seller on eBay. If you are, this book is for you. Author Michael Banks, has written an outstanding book that is a nonconformist, irreverent, and realistic handbook for both buyers and sellers.

Banks, begins by presenting an overview of the organization and structure of eBay, along with what it offers and the basics of how it works. Then, he covers the basics of participating in eBay auctions. The author continues by introducing you to the basics of searching on eBay. In addition, he also shows you how to combine basic search techniques with Search commands and unconventional techniques to conduct truly high-powered searches. The author also considers the relationship between value, price, and demand, and looks at some methods for calculating prices. Then, the author takes a look at how you can fit the profile of the ideal seller, and how to handle those less-than-ideal buyers you may consider. Next, he shows you how to decide what you are going to sell.
Next, the author suggests how you might go about finding items to sell on eBay. Then, he explains how to go about creating a successful auction. The author continues by showing you how to write copy on eBay. In addition, he covers how to relist an item and how to improve your chances of selling it. The author also presents an overview of things you should know before you bid and buy on eBay, focusing on dealing with sellers. Then, he answers questions about bidding and tracking auctions, along with information about techniques and tools you can use to win consistently. Next, he presents some approaches to getting those auction items you've lost. Then, the author covers the steps and options involved in paying for and getting your items. The author continues by looking at some common scams and downright illegal activities that take place on eBay. In addition, he looks at several types of products that aren't what they appear to be. Finally, the authors shows you how you might go about getting information about an eBay member, through eBay and other channels.

This excellent book shows you how eBay works; how to find things on eBay; how to bid effectively and win; the best times for buying and selling; how to draw bidders without spending a bunch on eBay auction features; how to spot shills, fraudulent sellers and deadbeat buyers; and, a lot more. In addition, you'll find information about how to handle the offline aspects of online buying and selling, and some useful information about using the Internet in general.

5 out of 5 stars Get this book.......2006-01-06

This book is great whether you are new to eBay or you have been using it for years. I have done some buying and selling on eBay and while I don't consider myself an expert I felt pretty confident in my abilities. There are a great many books out there about mastering eBay, but this one stands out amongst the crowd. This book opened my eyes to a whole lot more that eBay can do, for me, for you. The first chapter is the basics of what eBay is. After that it is a plethora of information. It covers topics from how to search to how to bid and how to post and item for the best results and how to attract bidders. This should be called the eBay bible because it is all you need. It can save you money, time, and effort. This book is packed with information that is easy to read and understand. Space is not wasted on excessive graphics; only the most appropriate and useful graphics are included. It is a fast read especially when you start getting excited about what you will learn and how soon you can use this knowledge. For those who are interested in eBay it is a page-turner. I am recommending this book to any one who uses eBay, from beginners to seasoned eBayers. The author participated in some of the original auctions in 1983 aimed at trading computer parts on college campuses, and now is a regular on eBay. He has written over 40 books on various topics, such as technology, writing and eBay.

5 out of 5 stars Covers just about everything including discerning the 'real prices' of items and learning more effective bidding strategies.......2005-12-06

Michael Banks' The eBay Survival Guide is another fine guide to selling and buying on eBay - and avoiding common pitfalls - which covers just about everything including discerning the 'real prices' of items and learning more effective bidding strategies. From using HTML in listings and handling templates to considering private auctions and handling problem buyers or sellers, all the basics of the interactive auction forum that is eBay are covered.

5 out of 5 stars A practical guide for all aspects of eBay.......2005-12-05

If you've never used eBay before you'd be silly to do so without first picking up 'The eBay Survival Guide' by Michael Banks. Even if you've been using the auction site for years you will also benefit from the information found in this book.

'The eBay Survival Guide' starts out, not surprisingly, with an overview and history of online auctions and of eBay itself. It then moves on to how the site works and also provides some great tips and techniques for finding items you want. Even though I've been using eBay since 1999 I found it interesting to go back to the beginning and get an overall sense of what's really happening on one of the biggest sites on the internet.

The next major section of the book is geared toward those people who are using the site to sell things. That brings up a point worth mentioning. This book is for both sellers and buyers on eBay. It's a 'survival guide' for all users, not just a "how to make lots of money on eBay" book. I'll look at the section for buyers in a minute. The section for sellers includes suggestions for creating better listings, when to relist items, how to deal with problems that may arise and so on. It's loaded with screenshots, so you're not just reading about eBay you're seeing what things will look like when you use the real site. I think a great many sellers would benefit from reading Chapter 10 called, "How To Create Listings That Sell". Banks points out the many pluses that come with writing effective descriptions and titles for your auction items.

Next comes the section for buyers. Again there are lots of screenshots that really help bring the examples to life. And there are more than just a few examples. The book is obviously written from a great deal of personal experience not just clinical research. Banks' anecdote about the historic airplane photograph and negative (page 186) is proof of this. In presenting it he helps illustrate best practices for bidding, outbidding and sniping. Here's an area where I had some experience but again felt that the book either reinforced some of the things I already knew (making me feel more confident in bidding) or suggested things I should be doing but wasn't (like spending more time researching other bidders).

Near the end of the book he discusses how not to get ripped off using eBay and in doing so exposes some of the uglier sides of the site. This is important information though and helps buyers and sellers better understand what can go wrong and how to avoid it.

Throughout the book Banks writes in a clear easy-to-understand style that feels like a friend sitting down to explain eBay to you. Despite the fact that the guide is about an internet website it feels not at all like a computer textbook. Its short concise sections make finding the information easy and learning from it even easier. You should find it easy to pick up the book and skip to whatever section is currently most relevant to your eBay activities. The well-written index also helps you to find the help you need quickly.

Whether you're new to eBay or not and no matter whether you're buying or selling it's a sure bet that "The eBay Survival Guide: How to Make Money and Avoid Losing Your Shirt" will help you get the most out of online auctions. Highly recommended.

2 out of 5 stars Author uses some of own advice.......2007-01-10

The author of this book has over 20 Listmania lists, so this book title kept popping up and I purchased it. Unfortunately, the book needs edited badly, basics like "periods" were missing, making it difficult to follow. It does have good basic advice if you want to publish your own book and do everything he did to do it, as he specifically touts some PODs and other resources. If technical books on book promotion overwhelm you, and you can see past the editing errors, this may be a decent book to read. After reading many books on book promotion, this book left me with marking one page as actual useful information for my own needs.

5 out of 5 stars The marketing strategies alone makes this a winner!.......2006-04-27

I got a lot more than I expected to get from this book.
I thought I would take a chance, what the heck I need help.

Not only does the author show you how to get published and
it's for real, no bull and no fluff. He teaches you how to think
current so you can design your title and description to take
advantage of today's technologies.

This is a must read book before you publish your book and
it's a must read book afterwards, so you can market your
book without it costing you an arm and leg.

The marketing strategies are unique and straightforward, not
hard to implement at all. As long as your book is interesting
or useful the strategies in this book can help get your book
noticed.

There isn't many how to books that comes close to delivering
on their promises. I have to say this book delivers 100% and
then some.

I only see one problem, the more this book is read and authors
start figuring out how to utilize this free advertising space, at
some point it will become difficult to fight the sharks for the
prime spots.

3 out of 5 stars Good Information But ..........2006-03-16

There is plenty of valuable information in this book, but it is not well written. I found it interesting that the author listed proofreaders, yet he has numerous spelling errors throughout.
Having said all that, I did get the information that I desired, so it was worth the money.

2 out of 5 stars Helpful, yet painful.......2006-01-15

The author has a positive attitude and has accomplished what he claims: self-published and sold his book on Amazon.com. He offers helpful ideas about how others can get their self-published books noticed and sold online. These ideas earn two stars; however...

...their presentation does not. The writing is often painful to read. I found myself urgently wishing the author had taken his own advice and hired a real editor. (I also wish he had brought in a real designer before offering design advice, and a real proofreader before offering proofreading advice.)

1 out of 5 stars This must be a joke!.......2005-10-17

Whether you are a self publisher or wanting to be one, you must buy this book! It is such a good laugh!

The author-publisher has done just about everything wrong that you possibly could in a self published book -- and now he's charging money for it!

Did he do it on purpose as a joke or a farce? Or did he really not know any better? I can't tell!

Consider this:

The cover looks like he did the printer's copy on a desktop inkjet printer on cheap paper.

He puts the copyright notice and LCCN on the title page.

The copyright notice is then repeated at the bottom of both pages of the Introduction.

In the table of contents -- which appears where the copyright page should be -- each chapter shows the range of pages, not just the first page.

His headers are larger than the body text.

Most of the book looks like it's double-spaced.

The spacing between words is uneven, as if the text was justified in a word processor or electronic typewriter from the 1980s.

He sometimes uses underlines in place of italics, and sometimes he uses both together.

He inserts long articles by other people with no indication that he has permission.

Much of the book is simply free info taken off the Web -- especially from Lulu, which seems to be the only publishing service that the author is familiar with!

Getting the picture? But now we come to the index, which is alone worth the price of the book. He actually indexes people by their first names! Oh joy!

Here are some of the priceless entries in this index: $4.53, 10th, $34.95, Caterpillar, calendar, calendars -- yes, two entries with identical pages -- County, experiences, fat, Have one to sell, I Universe (sic), key words, keyword, Satan, sub categories (sic), white.

This doesn't even mention the poor grammar, poor spelling, incorrect punctuation, innumerable typos, and general bad writing.

In short, this is a classic. It will be studied for years as the consummate example of everything than can be wrong with self publishing! Buy it today!
