5 out of 5 stars Simple, well-presented Vista coverage, but not a technical resource.......2007-08-03

I just finished the entire book, except the BDD section which doesn't interest me. The writing style is easy to read/follow, and Mark does his best to keep it interesting.

As I got deeper into the chapters, I found the material becoming less detailed than I needed. I would recommend the book for anyone new to Vista who wants to be exposed to all the new features. I wouldn't recommend it for someone who needs more technical information, because you will come away wanting more. This isn't a book you'd consult to solve problems, but it is a good overview of the new Vista OS.

I will be plowing into the Microsoft Resource Kit next for more depth.

Mastering Data Mining

In this follow-up to their successful first book, Data Mining Techniques, Michael J. A. Berry and Gordon S. Linoff offer a case study-based guide to best practices in commercial data mining. Their first book acquainted you with the new generation of data mining tools and techniques and showed you how to use them to make better business decisions. Mastering Data Mining shifts the focus from understanding data mining techniques to achieving business results, placing particular emphasis on customer relationship management.

In this book, you'll learn how to apply data mining techniques to solve practical business problems. After providing the fundamental principles of data mining and customer relationship management, Berry and Linoff share the lessons they have learned through a series of warts-and-all case studies drawn from their experience in a variety of industries, including e-commerce, banking, cataloging, retailing, and telecommunications.

Through the cases, you will learn how to formulate the business problem, analyze the data, evaluate the results, and utilize this information for similar business problems in different industries.

Berry and Linoff show you how to use data mining to:Retain customer loyaltyTarget the right prospectsIdentify new markets for products and servicesRecognize cross-selling opportunities on and off the Web

3 out of 5 stars Great superficial knowledge but falls short overall.......2004-12-08

Mastering Data Mining is a great book for quick superficial reference or a crash course in data mining but it becomes useless as more complicated issues araise. The book has a lot of practical examples and quick tips on the outside but as soon as you begin scratching the surface you find out that the examples are as general as they are vague. Some important points in model building are completely omitted and hidden with a graph or nice looking footnote.

More than once I finished a chapter wondering how some model or technique was used. I would suggest reading only the first eight chapters which are a great introduction to overall data mining and skip the case studies. If you are expecting a more serious and detailed reading on data mining, look somewhere else because you won't find it here.

4 out of 5 stars Ideas for GUI design of data mining software.......2001-05-12

While doing a graduate elective on Decision Making Technologies, I realized that data visualization and representation is crucial for data exploratory and validation of data mining analysis. To get some ideas on how the various data visualization and workflow techniques are applied and integrated into the GUI of commercial softwares, survey the various chapters of this book.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent book!.......2000-06-19

This book is an excellent book. The authors explain the various techniques, and show real world examples of their use. Most importantly, they explain the underlying goals of the various techniques, and what to watch out for when using them. I was most relieved to read that I am not alone in having limited success with association rules!

Although some of the particular examples were not the type of examples I deal with, the reasons they were chosen make perfect sense. Data mining owes much of its popularity to people attempting to find churners, etc. But there are plenty of examples covered, and with each one some new insight is revealed. Especially useful to me were the explanations of what it is one sees in the decision trees, lift curves, etc. Also, seeing various problems solved with several of the popular tools (MineSet, Enterprise Miner, etc.) was very helpful. There are many examples from various industries, and you learn something new about those industries too! (If you like the Sesame Street videos of how cans, tires, etc. are made even more than your kids do, you'll love this book for the examples alone.)

It is clear from this book that the authors not only know what they are talking about, they can actually break it down for a newbie like me. I have also had the pleasure of being in one of Mr. Berry's MineSet classes, and he demonstrated the same depth of knowledge and ability to convey it to others in that class as well.

This book is not an algorithm book, but it touches on them. It is not necessarily a tour of data mining tools, but does do this to some degree. It is probably most useful for anyone who wants to know "What is this 'data mining', and how can it help me?" with real world examples to make things clear. If the reader starts out thinking that data mining is just tossing a bunch of data into a tool and getting concrete results back, the confusion will not remain after reading this book. Finally, this book is VERY easy reading. Do yourself (or your boss) a favor and buy this book!

3 out of 5 stars Good, not Great.......2000-05-19

This book provides a number of case studies on applying data mining. I didn't learn a lot since the studies weren't applicable to what I am doing. Someone else might get more out of than me though. I did like their first book (it was very good) but this one wasn't nearly as good. There are better books that discuss the use of data mining software.

4 out of 5 stars A book from practitioners.......2000-03-30

Many books have been written on the algorithms used for data mining (e.g., machine learning, statistics). This is not yet another one.

This book is geared at people who want to derive insight and take action in a business setting. It is now well known that the algorithmic step is only a small part of the iterative knowledge discovery process, yet few books enlighten the users with the issues involved.

This book has a small section on the algorithms, but concentrates on the often-overlooked PROCESS of data mining (sometimes called knowledge discovery) and the problems associated with this process in practice.

Michael and Gordon are practitioners who have used multiple data mining tools and techniques. They know the problems and describe them well, sharing their real-life experiences through actual case studies. For example, people rarely appreciate the main problem with association algorithms: the number of uninteresting rules they generate. Now I can show them pages 426-428.

The few things that I didn't like were the use of non-standard terminology in a few cases. For example, directed instead of supervised; prediction instead of regression. While the common terms aren't great, they're standard now. The book also has few references. Someone readers will want to read more details about specific areas and will not find needed references.

Overall, it's a well written book, easy to read, with nice analogies to the world of photography.

5 out of 5 stars Holy book of EJB 2.1.......2006-08-10

This book is truly the complete book on EJB Specification 2.1 and more. By more I mean to say that not only does it focus on EJB and their real life implementations but also on the underlying technologies of distributed programming like RMI-IIOP and JNDI. It talks about the best practices and performance optimization techniques that can be used while working on EJBs. For me this book the holy book on EJBs.

This for people who do not know about EJB much and for those who are already grandmasters on them. For beginners, this book might look very heavy initially but slowly and slowly as you try to sink into the chapters you will get excellent conceptual knowledge about what EJBs are and how they are used. For masters, this offers the best reference manual available in the market.

4 out of 5 stars Ok in its sense.......2006-08-02

The title says mastering EJB...which is ok for a title but this book lacks in content that is needed for a beginner. This book claims that it's audience will be a beginner or an advanced guy and I feel that it is oriented more towards the experienced reader. The first 3 chapters explains the basics of Enterprise computing using J2EE environment and a simple example of the Hello Bean EJB, which is good for a beginner. But once you start delving into chapters 4, 5 and furthur in, you will happen to see things for which you might ask yourself the question "Why have I got to do this?".
I'd recommed this book for a guy who already has a fair understanding of EJB and wants to get a through understanding of the concepts. For the rest of us, I'd recommend Head First as the starting point.

3 out of 5 stars No longer a master.......2005-12-28

I have the two earlier editions of this book, but this book hardly added any value or did anything better than those earlier editions. The new chapters does not meet the expectations - I suspect the new authors messed up quality of the book. The new examples on EJB Web services is nothing but a hello world and I even doubt the new authors had any expertise to test those examples. Now I find this book does'nt make any help to me and it is no longer fit to call it as a Mastering EJB book. Now this book would collect dust in my shelf, because I find better examples in the Java web site and also at theserverside.com itself.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent - great examples, covers everything.......2005-04-03

This is an excellent and complete book on EJB. I read 1st and 2nd edition of the O'Reilly EJB book based on recommendations; I have to say the Ed Roman book is far superior - he covers every detail, including peripheral considerations, and has complete and numerous examples. 1 downside - many typos - but thankfully they are so obvious, it doesn't detract from comprehension.

2 out of 5 stars Good for a newbie but not the best.......2005-03-02

This is a good book for a newbie with loads of theories though this book stays far behind the enterprise level computing and on implementation of EJB driven applications. There's a huge gap between what this book describes and the real development environment of EJBs.

Never rely on the sample codes and the methodologies have been used in this book for those are not the best development approaches. This book consists of several pitfalls and not suitable to be used as an EJB development guideline (e:g: this doesn't solve the importance of PK classes and creating composite primary keys). Also never assume that this book describes the best EJB development methodologies just by fantasized by the way that the theories on EJB are presented.

If you seek more adventure on EJB this is probably not the best of books for this lacks some depth to the topics included. Apart from that, this book is quite ok for a newbie to get dirt with EJB and to understand the basics with the theories and fundamentals. If you like some fine grained info and you're a newbie, I'd suggest Applied Enterprise JavaBeans by Kevin Boone to brush up with what's missing here

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars perhaps a reference text?.......2005-08-01

This may be more of a reference book than a text on its subject. The breadth of topics is commendable and certainly encompasses much of what you as a sysadmin will probably want to do on a linux machine or cluster.

Jang's choice of the Red Hat linux is good; the most common implementation of linux around. On such a system, the first thing anyone sees after logging in is the desktop. He describes the two choices evenhandedly, KDE and Gnome. Functionally, there is little truly different between them. So it may just come down to your personal preferences as to which you adopt.

He goes carefully into describing network security. Pointing out that linux and open source gives you very powerful free tools to defend against intrusion.

5 out of 5 stars Superb Book.......2006-12-06

Finally. A solid, practical review of EJB -- if you had given up on enterprise bean architecture because of past limitations, most stacks have much better implementations today. This book is a really solid reference and reminded me why I wanted to build in EJB in the first place.

3 out of 5 stars Good introduction but poor practical guidance.......2006-11-08

For a J2EE developer, this book spends too much on high-level introduction of EJB 3.0 spec and forgot to dive in the practical details of where, when and how to use them in a real-world ejb scenarios. I am also bit disappointed about this book as it does'nt add much value while comparing to Sun Java EE5 blueprints. This book also poorly explains the Java persistence API which one of the key ingredients of ejb3.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for beginners.......2006-09-15

I am new to EJB. And I have to tell you after reading this book I don't think I will need other references. I think this a great book for beginners and could be good reference for those who familiar with previous versions of EJB. I wish examples were more detailed.

5 out of 5 stars Really excellent book.......2006-08-24

The book is really very good and I found it very helpful in learning EJB 3.0. I am about to start using EJB 3.0 at my job.

3 out of 5 stars Too much theory and less examples.......2006-08-08

I downloaded this book from theserverside site. The examples are incomplete. But I like Pro EJB 3 by Mike Keith over this book.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars A good tutorial for RMI, but..........2002-11-01

I purchased this book after doing some research into RMI via the internet to give me a more solid understanding of RMI, which it did. However, when applying my acquired knowledge to a real-world application, I found that I was missing a HUGE piece of the RMI puzzle. RMI over the INTRAnet is a wonderful thing; however, when trying to implmenent RMI over the INTERnet, and the RMI server is behind a firewall, you are in for a painful migraine. This is a show-stopper for my employers, I wish that the book mentioned something about RMI and firewalls. There are workarounds for the firewall, but they are by no means easy and you will not find them in this book.

4 out of 5 stars It answered most questions on RMI mailing List.......2001-10-05

I have been on RMI mailing list for half a year. This book clearly explained most of the frequently asked questions on the list. I think by reading first half the book, I understood RMI better than the half year I spent on RMI mailing list.

I agree that some examples were not given enough explaination, especially non-RMI related codes. E.g, the IdentySocket
.

5 out of 5 stars Makes it easy to understand - good teacher.......2001-06-28

I totally disagree with the negative reviews on Öbergs book. I always admire authors who makes things easíer to understand, not making them seem more intelligent than they really are. A good teacher is one who can make things understandable, not the opposite. If you have read 3-5 RMI books before this one you may get disappointed as some of the other reviewers. It's an excellent intoduction to RMI, but don't expect to find some magical new/hidden, features of RMI here. Maybe the title should have instead been "An Introduction to RMI with Lots of Good Explanations." If you need an introduction to RMI, where you don't have to read a lot "between the lines", then this book is a good choice. I've stopped searching the internet for explanations about RMI after I got this book. There are lot's of hello world RMI introductions out there on the web, but Öbergs book goes far beyond them all. A good introduction.

3 out of 5 stars Complete coverage, tough read.......2001-06-27

As the title states Mastering RMI does contain all the information necessary to master the subject of RMI. However, the explainations are not as clear as they could be. And, I found the pictoral diagrams to be of little value. If you are looking for a book which simply gives you what you need to use RMI you may be dissapointed. This book provides COMPLETE coverage, including the underpinnings of the technology. While this may be interesting reading it tends to divert attention and time away from the practical aspects of RMI. If your one of those programmers that has the time and desire to explore all the nitty-gritty details of the subject, regardless of their immediate benefit, than you will probably find this book a good read. Otherwise, if you just want to get up-and-running with RMI their are simpler and quicker routes you can take.

I hope this helpes :)

1 out of 5 stars Amateurish and badly edited.......2001-06-21

I agree with all the negative reviews already posted, but I was so frustrated with this book I had to add another voice of criticism.

The book was obviously a manuscript dump with no editing that I could detect. Why Wiley thinks they can charge this amount for no work at all is beyond me. It is littered with grammatical errors, incomprehensible sentences, and annoying repetition. In short, it is nearly unreadable. To add insult to injury, there are countless summaries which condescend to tell the reader that she should now have a good understanding of the covered material, and can move on. Don't be so sure you will have a good understanding. I did not, and I've been using RMI for some time.

As others have stated, the examples are contrived, and not very well written. There is very little here of use for those developing large-scale distributed systems.

Save your money (considerable money, in this case) and stick to Sun's website.

Competing is about "winning". In this book, Dr. Farid clearly rises an awareness flag on the important role of "culture" to win global competition. A "Cultural Intelligent."

I attended his class once a few years a go in Indonesia. I was admired by his strategy to make poll during the class. This smart way guarantees a more and more qualified poll result since the respondents are accumulated by time to time. He is studying while teaching. And, I have seen these compelling information colours the essence of the book.

As I previously guess before reading, Dr. Farid will fulfil this book with some significant samples from his direct experiences dealing with people in various cultures in many countries. And, I am not wrong about this.
Inside, I have also found the answers of the winning and loosing situations experienced while working and doing international business in past. These are the real value of this book.

Another beauty of this book is, it again tells us that our own way and value are not the only one in this world. There are a lot more cultural differences from country to country, from one race to another. It is now clear why sometimes "Yes" means "No" in some cultures or the other way around. So, in order to properly react to win, the power and the way of thinking of the competitors need to be known. Dr. Farid tells how to simply deal with it Since the business move towards global. The local goes global, the global comes to local.. This book really provides an enough weapon and maps to win the global competition. Enjoy reading it as I did !

With regional and global opening up of markets due to WTO, AFTA, NAFTA, companies will have to learn to work with other companies in other countries to do business more effectively or at less cost. Generally selection of partners is done via short match-making sessions where due to cultural reasons, simple gestures can be misinterpreted. This can lead to loss of valuable marketing or partnering opportunities.

My personal experience in this aspect was in trying to market my company niche area in E-Government Consultancies to developing countries where these countries generally have a different native language, speaks English in a different accent. In addition, we have to differentiate between just curious inquiries or actual leads. Dr Farid's book provides important guidelines on small items which ironically creates the first major impressions. These are communications through telephone, casual chat over ice-breaking sessions, writing of letters etc.

I would recommend these book to managers who are entrusted to do marketing overseas and have to interact with their foreign counterparts. This is to ensure their actions or communications are not being misinterpreted and creating sense of distrust to their potential partners. In addition, they would also be able to gather if their marketing activities is making results

    Book Description

Corporate Governance is the hot topic of the new millennium. Gone are the days when CEOs set agendas and earned 500 times more than average employees. Now, transparency rules. Corporations must establish new systems of accountability, and encourage long-term participation in decision-making by both shareholders and staff. Those that succeed will be better equipped to create wealth, solve complex problems, and compete in global markets.
The role of the directorate and the need to ensure an effective framework for its accountability to owners is paramount to success. In line with this thinking, Mastering Global Corporate Governance argues that one of the key responsibilities of the Board is leadership, and that the root of good corporate governance lies in the strength of a corporate leader. In particular, it focuses on two 'burning issues' for senior executives: how can the boards of global companies best lead their companies through the fundamental dilemmas that face all boards?; and how can Boards, entrusted with ultimate responsibility for the way a company exercises leadership, provide that leadership?

Centering on Sun's Enterprise JavaBeans (EJBs) 1.1 specification, Mastering Enterprise JavaBeans surveys the range of technologies and APIs needed to use EJBs successfully. Mixing a high-level perspective on EJBs with plenty of practical programming advice, this title makes a good choice for the IS manager or developer planning to use EJBs in future projects.

This book succeeds in two notable ways. First, it presents a fine high-level overview describing EJBs and how they fit into today's multitiered, server-side enterprise architectures. The author makes connections between EJBs and other component architectures (such as Microsoft DNA and CORBA). Illustrated with numerous diagrams, these chapters will be useful to anyone seeking to understand the basics of Sun's powerful component model.

This title also serves as a programming primer for serious EJB development. In later sections, the author introduces practical advice for creating both session and entity beans, with plenty of nuts-and-bolts advice, including how to work with actual EJB products. (This book also shows you what to look for when purchasing an EJB application server to deploy your bean components.)

Later chapters delve into transaction management and show how to use Java with CORBA and IIOP. The text culminates in an impressive case study using EJBs and Java servlets to power an e-commerce Web site (complete with an online catalog and a shopping cart). This example is a standout, and it's all you will likely need to get started with EJBs in custom projects. Final appendices cover several APIs and standards in more detail, including RMI, JNDI, and XML.

In all, this title succeeds at bringing the EJB standard home to the practical reader. It demystifies EJBs and gives both managers and developers what they need to start solving business problems using this powerful new component model. --Richard Dragan

Topics covered: Overview of Enterprise JavaBeans (EJBs) component model and Java 2 Enterprise Edition (J2EE), the EJB 1.1 standard, multitiered server-side architectures, J2EE technology primer: RMI, JNDI, JDBC, JTS/JTA, servlets and JSPs, Java IDL, JavaMail, Connectors, XML, EJB Container and Server products and responsibilities, session beans: stateless and stateful beans, EJB security and component life cycle, entity beans and persistence: bean-managed persistent entity beans and container-managed persistent entity beans, flat and nested transactions, ACID properties, two-phase commits, CORBA and RMI-IIOP and EJBs, e-commerce case study using EJBs and servlets.

    Book Description

A user's manual for "the best thing since the Java language itself" Enterprise JavaBeans (EJB) will radically streamline the application development process. It provides a standard way for developing enterprise-level Java applications. And, best of all, it comes equipped with built-in services like database access, security, and transaction monitoring. With EJB, programmers can simply write the business software and hook it into the EJB services it needs to work. The rush is on to develop EJB compliant applications. Filled with practical, proven tips and techniques, this book offers an overview of what EJB is, how it works, and how to build specific EJB applications. CD-ROM includes sample source code, the EJB specification and supporting code from JavaSoft, demos of EJB servers, and links to other sources.

5 out of 5 stars Super EJB book.......2003-03-23

Early this month I emailed Jacquie Barker (author Beginning Java Objects and Deploying Java Objects). This was the email and I quote "Yes, your email about the difficulties encountered by legacy programmers in transitioning to J2EE is indeed true. It took me quite sometime to really understand the whole concept, but after a journey (as you call it) distance equivalent to reading 5 different books on J2EE, I finally found one book which is for me, the super book on J2EE. This book is Mastering Enterprise JavaBeans and the Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition by Ed Roman. Although this is a 1999 book on J2EE, the explanations are so thorough and graceful in presenting each topic, that I highly recommend this to legacy programmers new to the subject". To Ed Roman, thank you very much indeed.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Book..........2002-01-24

I'm new to this whole Java and come here with a background of C++/COM/DCOM. I must say, this book is written excellent. It gave me a very good understanding of what the heck is all about EJB and stuff around it.

Starting with a review of Server-side architectures, jumps into beans and building different kinds of them. Appendix items give very good idea of technology surrounding EJB.

While the theory part of the book talks about design and architectural issues, the code examples are the best to put you in a position to start building EJB apps immediately.

I strongly recommend this book. It definitely helps those people who have no idea about EJB so far.

5 out of 5 stars Detail Coverage of the EJB Topic.......2001-09-28

A very good book to start off with EJB and is also useful for Developers too.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent book to understand EJB.......2001-08-23

Excellent book to understand EJB. I downloaded this book from theServerside.com ( PDF format) and read it. The pdf content cannot be printed and it can be read online only. I will wait for the next edition to be out ( chapters for review are already available on theServerside.com) and then buy it. The next edition will cover EJB 2.0.

5 out of 5 stars Looking forward to the EJB 2.0 book!.......2001-08-22

If this first book is any indication, the upcoming release from Ed Roman (and pals) is a purchasing no-brainer. Amazon.com already lists the second book and I notice that one of the authors is Floyd Marinescu of theserverside fame. What a powerhouse of authors and information!

The first book was well written and and the author was even available via e-mail for any questions or troubleshooting. The book is a MUST for any Java developers library!!
