1 out of 5 stars College textbook price-gouging going on here........2005-12-04

$67 for a paperback book is highway roberry.

Have been pricing out college textbooks on Ebay, Amazon, and the college bookstore. It's a bloody medieval guild these publishers have going here and professors who insist on the latest editions of texts are aiding and abetting the rip-off.

This is monopolisitic practice if I've ever seen it. If the industry doesn't rachet down this greed-fest, someone else will - and as far as I'm concerned, it can't happen too quickly. Shame on you all.

5 out of 5 stars Here is what counts.......2000-08-24

I am an affectionate critic of "Legacies," as both editors were teachers of mine and many of the contributors were co-teachers with me in the mid-1990s. Regardless, I used the book for several years and the results speak volumes.

This is a college literature/composition reader that tries to do it all -- and succeeds. For its hefty heft, one must acknowledge that each lesson plan (day-to-day lesson plans handed happily to you by real teachers, talented teachers) belongs here. I used many of them before they were "lesson plans" -- they engage and involve students.

Whether you are a reader/student simply looking for a great resource of singular texts or a college literature professor/adjunct composition instructor searching for sure-fire ways of directing your students away from the window and towards what counts -- "Legacies" is the book.

Composition teachers throughout the English-speaking world have been pushing this book on their students since it was first published in 1957. Co-author White later revised it, and it remains the most compact and lucid handbook we have for matters of basic principles of composition, grammar, word usage and misusage, and writing style.

Book Description

This is the braille version of the timeless reference book. According to the St. Louis Dispatch, this "excellent book, which should go off to college with every freshman, is recognized as the best book of its kind we have." It should be the ". . . daily companion of anyone who writes for a living and, for that matter, anyone who writes at all" (Greensboro Daily New). "No book in shorter space, with fewer words, will help any writer more than this persistent little volume" (The Boston Globe). Two volumes in braille.

4 out of 5 stars A very good tool.......2007-10-17

This book is an excellent tool for those who want to learn in a practical way the essentials of writing. Whether you write for science, art, or any other area of investigation; this book will help you giving tips and showing with detailed examples the most common situations while you write. I recommend the book to those who want writing as a way of expressing their ideas and to those who are not conformists and like to go further in life.

This book is: Easy to read, practical, and helpful.

5 out of 5 stars Great guide for writers of all ages.......2007-09-25

My son's teacher recommended this book when he was in middle school. He still refers to it in college as he pursues his writing career. My daughter needed her own copy for school because her brother wouldn't give his up! You really can't go wrong with this book.

3 out of 5 stars Good book........2007-09-07

It is good book, but you might find some styles are repeating with other books. It is good to learn from this author, but I also suggest learn more from other authors, too.

5 out of 5 stars Read it, Then Read It Again.......2007-09-06

This itsy bitsy tome is an ageless classic. I read it for the first time 20 years ago. Despite having never found grammar interesting before, I became hooked on the sharp little lessons. I read it again, to both delight and edification. And I'll read it once more, to remind myself of the rules that make English what it is and to smile at Prof. Strunk, long gone but very much alive in these pugnacious 80 pages. He's somehow managed to boil down the bones of the language and give you the absolute essentials. If you haven't read it, you're in for a treat and a pleasant surprise, especially if you don't care for grammar. This is truly short and sweet.

Book Description

Told in a series of vignettes stunning for their eloquence, The House on Mango Street is Sandra Cisneros's greatly admired novel of a young girl growing up in the Latino section of Chicago. Acclaimed by critics, beloved by children, their parents and grandparents, taught everywhere from inner-city grade schools to universities across the country, and translated all over the world, it has entered the canon of coming-of-age classics.

Sometimes heartbreaking, sometimes deeply joyous, The House on Mango Street tells the story of Esperanza Cordero, whose neighborhood is one of harsh realities and harsh beauty. Esperanza doesn't want to belong--not to her rundown neighborhood, and not to the low expectations the world has for her. Esperanza's story is that of a young girl coming into her power, and inventing for herself what she will become.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars This is an amazing book!.......2007-10-23

When I read House on Mango Street for the first time, I found boring and difficult to read. I just saw the story of a young girl stuck in a house that she doesn't want, yearning for a house of her own.
However, when I read the book a second time, I relized that all these small chapters which appear to be about completely different subjects are all alike in one way- they show Esperenza growing up. Each chapter, while focusing on one character on Mango Street, also releases a little bit of information about Esperenza (how she feels, what she wants, how she reacts), until by the last chapter, you feel like she could be your best friend, you know her so well.
After I really read the House of Mango Street, I thoroughly enjoyed it. If you read this book and it appears confusing just look at it this way: This isn't just writing from the mind, it's writing from the heart.

3 out of 5 stars The House on Mango Street.......2007-10-23

In my eighth grade language arts class I was required to read this book. At first when I read it I admit that I was pretty confused. This is a book about Esperanza, a girl who grew up in seversl different places. moving very often. In this story she is in the house on Mango street. THis is more of a lonely place, where very few people, stay for a couple of weeks at most and then move out. Apparently women are treated horribly and it is not a place in which you would want to live. As Esperanza wrote about her life, she explains that she does not exactly like Mango street. For me, I have only moved once and have never kept a journal or a diary, so it was fairly difficult for me to relate to this book. As I was discussing the book with my classmates, I realized that many of them were also confused. Each individual chapter was about one entirely different topic compared to the previous chapter. I had never actually thought of reading it from Esperanza's perspective, so I decided to. As a result the book became much more enjoyable to read. I was still fairly confused but I was able to put all of the pieces together. Instead of trying to understand each chapter by itself I tried to understand the story as a whole. Then I finally understood that this book really was worth reading.

3 out of 5 stars Impressionist Literature.......2007-10-22

I was required to read this book for school. As I read, I thought it was a bit cofusing. Each chapter reflects the thoughts of Esperanza, a Hispanic girl who has moved around more times than she can remember. The latest house is one on Mango Street, a neighborhood where women are treated terribly and people are constantly moving out. No one really wants to belong to Mango Street, it's more of a place you stumble across then one you choose. This is the story of a girl who learned to grow up in a place she didn't want as part of her history. The adolescent years are already tough, and Esperanza had to deal with all this and a house she didn't want. I think we all have our own Mango Streets, a part of our history that we're not proud of and want to leave behind-but "those who leave Mango must always come back- to give hope to those who cannot leave". This story is told in vignettes, and reflects what Esperanza was thinking at the time. It is written similarly to my old journals, which madde it easy to relate to. It also made the book something for me to defend-while my peers were complaining about how confusing a story without a plot line is, I was rather enjoying seeing Esperanza's world from this perspective. I must admit, it was a bit confusing at first, but once the book was finished all the seemingly random pieces of information began to make sense. This book is a lot like a puzzle, or an impressionist painting-standing close enough to examine one stroke, and only analyzing this one stroke-really does not offer a comprehensive view of the painting. When you step back, and see all the strokes come together, you xpieriece something beautiful. That's what this book is like- once you see all the little stories come together, you can step back and see something beautiful.

3 out of 5 stars Great Writing, But Lackluster Characters.......2007-09-22

The House on Mango Street tells the story of Esperanza, a Mexican-American girl growing up in a "ghetto" area of Chicago.

But instead of being your typical novel, this book is a collection of vignettes, each focusing on one specific character or event, with few of them mentioned in future chapters. And instead of being in a typical prose style, the book is more of a combination of standard writing and poetry together.

With the way the book is written, we are allowed a very intimate contact with Esperanza's mind. Sandra Cisneros blends that with a skillful use of metaphors to create a very detailed and personal world.

But that's pretty much what I like about it.

On the other hand though, I was very disappointed with who was telling the story - Esperanza. Despite the writing, I didn't really care for her that much.

Even worse was the Esperanza got very whiny towards the end of the book. For some reason I can't fathom, she simply decides to hate her house, insisting that it isn't her home. But even before that, Esperanza continually self-pities herself for a variety of things, falling into a boring humdrum of angsty teenage melorama. And then we have the (vaguely described) rape scene.

I didn't find the other characters very rememberable, either. Most of them just them were one shot characters who wouldn't affect the story at all if they were removed.

In conclusion, I think this is a good book to read, but not really that great as everyone else says it is. (It's a good thing that it's short.)

1 out of 5 stars Horrible.......2007-09-07

This book is most overrated. Yes it is a great remark on culture and growing up Latino, but ignorance of simple writing styles and grammar is no excuse. Not to mention that the book is not even remotely interesting. The main character is confusing, rambles on, and Cisneros always tries to draw pity for her. This is the worst book I have ever read.

The world is divided into two types of people: those who wince when they see the words Canadian geese in print, and those who don't. If you are the former, or if you are the latter working for the former, the The Associated Press Stylebook and Libel Manual provides invaluable assistance when you need to get your Canada geese all in a row. Countless newspapers and other publications base their style guides on this manual. The entries are arranged alphabetically and include issues of spelling, punctuation (there is no period in Dr Pepper), grammar, abbreviation, capitalization (Popsicle and Dumpster are, tollhouse cookies aren't), hyphenation (none, surprisingly, in ball point pen), and frequently misused words. There are also longer discussions of things such as Arabic names, chess notation, weather terms, and religious movements. Plus you'll find separate sections on sports writing, business writing, libel, and copyright.

    Book Description

Fully revised and updated, the essential handbook for all writers, editors, students, and public relations specialists.

More people write for the Associated Press than for any newspaper in the world, and writers have bought more copies of The AP Stylebook than of any other journalism reference. With this essential guide in hand, any writer can learn to communicate with the clarity and professionalism for which the Associated Press is famous. Fully revised and updated, this edition contains over 5,000 A to Z entries--including more than 50 new ones--laying out the AP's rules on grammar, spelling, punctuation, capitalization, abbreviation, and word and numeral usage. Comprehensive and easy to use, The AP Stylebook provides the facts and references necessary to write accurately about the world today: correct names of countries and organizations, Internet language and search techniques, language to avoid, common trademarks, and the unique guidelines for business and sports reporting. The final word on media law, The AP Stylebook also includes an invaluable section dedicated to crucial advice on how writers can guard against libel and copyright infringement. The veritable "journalist's bible," this is the one reference that working writers cannot afford to be without.

With more than 50 new entries plus updates of more than 100 others, The AP Stylebook includes such features as:

    5 out of 5 stars Wouldn't write without it.......2007-07-28

Also know as the AP style guide, this book should be every copywriter's and journalist's bookshelf. This is the definitive guide to punctuation, grammar and writing style for magazine and newspaper articles as well as most business writing. And it is vastly different from the style of writing most of us learned in school, which follows the Chicago Manual of Style. If you are thinking about writing for magazines or newspapers, or starting a copywriting business, you absolutely must get a copy of this.

4 out of 5 stars Good Introduction to AP Style.......2007-07-07

I bought this book because I had a client that used the AP Style in their marketing communication and all outgoing documentation had to be reviewed using the AP Style. Being a technical writer, I had not used the AP Style before. Now I have a better understanding of why words are used the way they are in a newspaper. However, about 20% of the AP Style does not apply to technical writing.

    4 out of 5 stars AP Stylebook.......2007-05-29

A must have for all print designers. Great reference material for graphic and web designers.

4 out of 5 stars Wanna be a reporter? Duh........2007-02-25

If you aspire to have any sort of career in print or online journalism, you should not need a review to tell you that you need this book. Duh.

However, I am going to give this book only four stars because AP needs to stop being losers and end the silliness of capitalizing the word "Internet" or writing "website" as "Web site." It's dumb.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Resource.......2007-01-16

This is a great book for anyone, from an aspiring writer to the accomplished journalist. The information within is very valuable and very well organized.

I am a teacher of writing at middle school. I use this text book myself to pull-out parts of the included essays as models for my students. The organization and information about how writers think and go through the writing proccess is very helpful to students who think they cannot write ot hate writing. (There is not ONE WAY to go through the writing process, despite what most of our teacher trainings will tell us.) The many quotes about the writing process spark good discussions and free up students to realize that even published authors re-work and revise constantly. This is not a technical book, but is recommended for a more holistic approach to thinking about how to write and how to improve your written communication. Also this book helps teachers who have read and use the methods of "In The Middle" with many authentic pieces of writing, beyond what is in that book.

This book is incredible, not only is it necessary for english 3a but I would never have been able to write this review. Not only that but it teaches you how to write good reviews, not bad ones. This book is great!

4 out of 5 stars Much better than other texts.......2005-08-11

I have used this text in my College Writing class for roughly 4 years, and I continue to like the text overall. I disagree with some other views about the quality of the essays in the texts. The readings on argument are quite good, and they evoke discussion in my classes without prompting. I also like the fact that the text does not have a decidedly liberal bias. IE. They have one essay in favor of same sex marriage and one against it. The end of chapter prewriting activities are also good as are the peer review activities.

What the text lacks is a section on annotated bibliographies, which my students have to write as part of their research assignment. It also lacks a good section on comparison and contrast; some sample essays would be essential in this area.

Overall, this is a good text. It is much better than the dreadful Allyn & Bacon Guide to Writing, which is written in a language that most college students do not understand.

Comprehensive grammar book. Great sections on APA and MLA format writing.

5 out of 5 stars The best writing reference I've found for the SAT Writing Section.......2006-06-21

I'm an SAT tutor, and I haven't been thrilled with many of the grammar/usage/writing SAT books on the market. They usually do a decent job on a few topics but not all topics. I'm getting this book for every one of my students (and my own son) because it will not only help them with the SAT writing section but it serves as the best ongoing reference for their use in school. I haven't tried the CD-ROM yet (sold separately) but it has over 1000 practice exercises.
