Informative, hard to plod through in places.......2005-03-02
The book has a lot of useful information about setting up and running small corporations.
Never Judge a Book by its Cover.......2005-01-23
This book provides vital information not usually covered in most self-publishing books and is a solid resource guide. Another confirmation that you need to read many books on your subject to familiarize yourself with the business. Areas such as how to protect your inventory by filing a UCC in the state the distributor is based, understanding the ins and outs of how distributors work, how to establish discounts and payment schedules that protect your financial structure, how to properly set-up your Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable, taxes, LLC's, S Corporations, etc. Peter Hupalo's only weak area is his cover design. Anyone this intelligent should know their strengths and weakness's, and graphic design/layout is his. His book deserves better and would appeal to more buyers if it was redesigned.
Focus.......2004-12-30
I found the book focused more on C Corporations. A few of the chapters did focus on S Corps and it answered a lot of questions I had, and also raised more questions in the process. I found it did not go into real detail on S Corp deductions, or how to handle tax liability for an owner/employee.
The Book Saved Me Money.......2004-11-25
This book is, to me, misnamed. It's really about how taxes are collected on various types of business structures. It discusses the various business organizations such as sole proprietorships, limited liability companies (LLCs), and corporations. Under corporations both C and S corporations are covered. (I can't think of a catchy title to say that, so I guess the book can stay named as it is.)
Most of the book is on the S corporation. This makes sense as most small business should probably be S corporations. The small business isn't going to attract large numbers of investors. By shifting the income of the business to an S you can often save several thousand dollars in taxes by shifting between salary and dividends or what the IRS calls earned income and passive income.
When I got the book I had a couple of questions in mind like "how much salary should I pay myself." These questions aren't answered in most "how to incorporate" type books. What I wanted was two answers, what does the law say, and what are the real rules. I got both answers quickly and easily.
For me, the information I wanted was covered in about 10% of the book, the rest of the material I either knew or didn't care about. That 10% that I needed saved me many, many times the cost of the book.
Buy it with pre-tax dollars!.......2003-08-24
This is a great read for anybody considering incorporation or investing in an existing business. The author employs dozens of examples to illustrate the key decisions involved in choosing a business structure and how to manage it. Potential downside is given equal weight with potential savings, and often neglected issues affecting minority shareholders like "dilution" and "freeze out" are given a fair hearing.
The section on pre-tax vs. post tax purchases was particularly well illustrated. Find out why a $0.37 stamp may cost you $0.25 when you buy it through your business and $0.56 when you steal it from your personal stationary drawer. The author's conservative approach to accounting was refreshing in a world of books that profess to tell you how to beat the IRS. The strategies for maximizing shareholder income in this book are based on solid, legitimate planning.
The only fault I found with the book is that the number of examples led the author to be a little too imaginative with made-up business names. However, that wasn't enough to stop me from reading it from cover to cover in less than 24 hours.

Misleading at best and in dire need of a new titled.......2007-08-23
This should be titled, How to Make Money Producing Free Junk Magazines. Most of the folks I know in the publishing industry would love to see a down to basics intro to publishing, ie, the printing lingo, developing relationships with authors, editing tips, detailed layout advice, etc. This book is about producing, not publishing. Moving units of advertising, not creating something worthwhile to read or engage the public. This is a get-rich-quick book that belongs in the business section and has not place near publishing/literature reference.
Good, but...........2007-03-20
This book has a lot of great information in it and will be useful for anyone who wants to start publishing.
HOWEVER, this book is by far the most poorly edited book I have ever read. Punctuation mistakes ABOUND and it is obvious that standards were not very high for publication of this book.
Buy it for the education and look at it as what NOT to do when publishing a book or magazine.
Tons of Great Information.......2007-03-09
This is a great asset if you are thinking about publishing your own magazine. There is a wealth of information for the publishing novice. A little advice - buy this book some time before you plan to publish your magazine so that you can digest the information.
Covers circulation, readership, proposal writing, optional publication formats, niche markets and more........2006-10-07
If you're thinking of starting a home-based publishing business, you can't be without Publish Your Own Magazine, Guidebook or Weekly Newspaper: it tells how to not just publish a winning title, but how to make it profitable - with no money up front. All kinds of successful periodicals and what made them tops are reviewed in a title which covers circulation, readership, proposal writing, optional publication formats, niche markets and more.
Bang for your Buck.......2006-03-02
Of the many books that I have purchased on self-publishing, this is one of the better ones. Even though I myself was mostly interested in book publishing rather than mangazines or guidebooks, this book still served me well. It gave a lot of useful tips and pointers as well as information I never thought about. I checked the book out of the library initially, but I want my own copy.
This book gives you step by step details on how to enter the publishing field on a tight budget. It gives you an abundance of resources. Some of those include:
* Starting out with little cash (and how he did it)
* Trade secrets necessary to pick winning publications
* How to hire the people you need (at a price you can afford)
* How to save money on printing
* Reproducible Business Forms
This is a great book to include in your self-publishing library. It does cover alot of areas, but I don't usually complain when someone gives me more bang for my buck.

Book is O.K........2007-06-11
This book was O.K. There were many ideas to choose from but only a few good ones. Plus, there isn't much information on each business. You could find more ideas and a lot more information for free on the Internet.
outdated.......2007-03-30
Book is now outdated. Is a good reference or starting point for the novice. Good introduction to where things have come from... Things have changed quite a bit since publication as they tend to do on the net.
101 Internet Businesses You Can Start from Home.......2005-10-12
Waste of Money...Don't buy this book its completly outdated and not a single business in 101 business listing is practical in today's life
More comprehensive than similar titles........2002-06-20
If you've ever dreamed of owning your own business but don't want to be tied down to a brick and mortar building, then this is the book for you. Starting an Internet business could not be easier with the help of the information provided. The book starts with interview information from three successful Internet businesses and then follows that with how to get your point across, the various formats for a storefront, required features of the successful storefront, payment options, and levels of e-business. From there it moves to helping determine what is important to you and how to use that to find the right business for you. From there it moves to the profiles of successful businesses. These profiles are complete with how to market the business, startup costs, skills needed, online examples, etc. It finally concludes with information on how to build your site, get it submitted to search engines, e-mail marketing, using links and pretty much just about everything that you need to know in order to get the business up and running.
Susan Sweeney, the owner of an international Internet firm, has produced a very thorough and easy to understand book. Probably the best book available today on starting an Internet business from scratch, it is a highly recommended read.

A book to start with..........2006-08-02
If you've just been bitten with the idea of starting a B & B as I have, this is a good book to start with. Lot's of info, with just enough detail to keep it from being a text book. I'm looking ahead to about 10 years before I go this route in my retirement, and this is a book I will always keep handy. It answered questions I didn't even know I had at this stage and kept my feet on the ground without bursting my bubble as some other books did.
How to Start and Operate Your Own Bed-and-Breakfast.......2006-02-17
This book was very informative and a fast read. I would highly recommend it to anyone interested in the B&B business.
Well-Written, Easy Read.......2004-08-18
This book is a good introduction to the Bed & Breakfast business; I'm glad I read it first. It contains useful information and the tone is pleasant and light. But it is just a little dated (almost 10 years old), and you need to read several more books to get all the information you need (such as The Complete Idiot's Guide. . .)
Folksy, Practical . . . Very Sweet.......2004-05-02
The tone of this book is as lovely as I'm sure the author/innkeeper is. She's experienced at her business and her craft of teaching the art of owning a Bed and Breakfast.
This is one of many books you should purchase/read if you are interested in this field. Look for others (So, You Want to Be An Innkeeper, for example) for more hard-core business advice.
The nitty gritty of running the shop........2000-06-18
This book goes room by room into decorating, supplies needed, rules, safety, and the likes which really helps when you are running a B&B. IT failed to really go into depth about the business aspects which I thought was a shame. This book is great if you are already running a B&B or want to decorate your house like one, but I would suggest buying several other B&B books to help give the complete picture. It also include recipies which was an added bonus. A good book for the right need.

Outdated and Overrated.......2001-06-02
A lot has changed in the business since this book was written. And unfortunately, what still applies is too vague to be of much use. You can't begin to cover the scope attempted here in enough detail to call this a "how to" guide.
Excellent primer for start-ups.......2000-04-25
This is an excellent book for anyone considering or just starting their own business. Though the content focus is on an advertising agency (as the title dictates) most of the information is easily transferable to most types of small business. The author presents the material in an easy-to-follow format and the book is full of things that will prevent the many "gotchas" of setting up a business. I read the book the first year of opening my first business. I wish I would have read it *before* I opened my doors but that didn't stop it from being one of the most useful books I have ever read.

Book Description
Most people dream about someday owning a business, but dreams are often no match for the reality of the red tape and regulations involved in actually getting a business up and running. Small Time Operator shows the way. The most popular start-up guide ever written, it covers every aspect of small business ownership, including getting the proper permits and licenses; financing; choosing a location; creating an effective business plan; whether or not to incorporate; recordkeeping; setting up a bookkeeping system; hiring employees; insurance; federal, state, and local taxes; dealing with the IRS; franchises; doing business on the internet; and much more. This new edition has been updated to reflect current changes in the tax code and business management principles. Clearly written and fun to read, the book breaks down the seemingly complex process of opening a business into a simple step-by-step procedure — and helps turn the small business dream into reality.

Major league advice for small timers..........2007-08-06
This book's reputation proceeded it and I found it to be all I was expecting. It is thorough without getting lost in unnecessary detail, and when more is needed, or advice specific to a region or subject, he leaves the reader with clear guidance on where it can be found.
As a self-employed contractor, designer, millwork and furniture maker, my 37 years of experience has born out all his advice and I have made my share of - if not all - the mistakes he warns of. And done some of the right things. He comes as close as I've found so far to a source of advice on not just what's right to do, but what's practical, what's realistic and (even) what people can get away with.
I will be using "Small Time Operator" as an adjunct text for the cabinetshop management classes I teach at our local community college.
Good Basic Textbook.......2007-05-16
The book covers some business basics which makes it handy and useful for those venturing into new businesses but with limited background on how to start and run a business. The areas covered include the start-up process, marketing the business, bank accounts, bookkeeping, cash-flow forecasting, tax returns, business plans, legal entities, financing, import and export and insurance. The book is written in a simple and easy to follow style. Therefore I recommend it to budding entrepreneurs as it provides valuable advice that should help you start and nature a successful small business.
Those with some business background will likely find the book to be too basic and can therefore pass this one.
Good Information for the Entrepeneur.......2007-05-07
A great resource for anyone who is setting up or running a small business.
Has good practical information that the typical small business owner needs.
The umpteenth edition, still going strong.......2007-03-25
I've bought and given away several copies of previous editions of this book over the years. I just ordered this new edition because previous editions have been full of practical advice on setting up a business and giving it a good start. It's also a lot of fun to read, believe it or not! Check out reviews on amazon of the previous editions.

Excellent information and advice........2003-12-30
I own and operate my own S-Corporation, and I found this book to be chockful of invaluable information and advice for setting it up and running it. I strongly recommend the book.
Very Disappointed.......1999-11-25
I was very disappointed with this book. Its cover gives the impression, with bullets, that you will be able to learn several things from the author. For example 1) Using an S Corp for a personal tax shelter. 2) Completely avoid paying any income tax. I bought this book thinking that I would be taken through a step by step process on how to accomplish at least those items highlighted on the books cover. But instead, I was taken through a lot of general information without really being tought how to "do" anything. I believe that the author is knowledgeable, however this book was sold as a "how to" book. It feel way short of that mark.
Confusing, not enough detail.......1999-10-22
HOW TO START YOUR OWN (SUBCHAPTER)S CORPORATION initially deceives the reader into thinking it will be easy to understand, because of the author's folksy style and use of plain language. However, the information in the book is not organized helpfully, nor is it complete. For example, there is one mention of Social Security Tax in the index; upon looking at the correct page for this mention, I found an only an irreverent reference to the possibility that FICA taxes may not be returned to taxpayers in Social Security payments. In the "Summary and Examples" section of Chapter 3, the author states, "...again, the IRS and the Social Security Administration won't like that procedure..." (i.e., taking all S corporation profits as dividend distributions) but I was unable to find where the author had discussed this at all (why say, "again,"?)
Furthermore, an updated edition would be welcome inasmuch as there have been several changes to S Corporation regulations, the most notable being in 1996 when the limit on number of stockholders was changed from 35 to 75, a substantial increase indeed.
Very informative. Well written. Humorous writing style........1999-04-16
Great breakdown of the tax options available to small businesses in terms of S corporations, partnerships, LLC's, etc. Everything you need to know to start an S corporation.

Quite Thorough.......2007-02-14
Mr. Stephenson covers pretty much everything related to starting your home-based business. I don't know that there is another book on the market with even a fraction of the useful worksheets and resources he includes. I highly recommend this book for anyone contemplating a step-by-step guide to starting a business.
Excellent Book.......2006-11-03
This book covers just about everything from organizing your desk to creating and implementing your business. The only downfall I saw that it did not cover bookkeeping of your business. It talked about finding capital and payment options but no accounting.
Working from home made easy.......2005-10-05
Even though I've operated my business from home for over 3 years, I found this book very helpful and it provided lots of valuable money saving tips, as well as lots of ideas for how I can expand my business using easy promotional ideas. I especially liked the information provided on home/business security, and plan to implement many of these into my own home and business. It doesn't matter if you're new to business, or already running a home based business-this book will help you run a better and more profitable business.
Excellent Value.......2004-11-24
Buying this book would be wise for anyone starting or operating a business, but especially those that want to start a home business. It is well written and easy to understand, and covers all aspects of starting and running a home based business, from A to Z-research, planning, setting up an office, advertising, sales and marketing, customer services, and lots of business ideas for people who have yet not determined the type of business they want to run. A no hype, tell it the way it is home based business book full of lots of information to keep business startup costs low, packed with useful contact information and resources, and a very helpful guide for new entrepreneurs.
Book Description
The Tea Room is featured in the Midwest edition of Country Living Magazine - February 1, 2004. This book is about how to start and run a business or tea room and gift store. The book contains Joyce Whitaker's story and how she went from being a wife fro 20 years, then 18 years as a writer and her experiences starting her own tea room from scratch over the past 10 years. It shows the good and the bad experience...nothing is left out about her real life story. This book should be read by anyone considering starting their own business. Tea room owners and women in business should read the book and avoid many costly mistakes. Joyce's life story tells of her becoming the Vice President of four corporations with NO college education. Any woman will relate to her trials and successes immediately.
Customer Reviews:
How to Start Your Own Tea Room...by Whitaker.......2007-05-09
This book gives a fair overview of the details involved in opening a restaurant and gift shop, though it appears her main purpose is to get the reader to sign up for her consulting service. The book is not well written and you have to wonder about a tea room owner who misspells Earl Grey tea as "Earl Gray"! However, a reader with absolutely no background in opening a business will find that this book offers some good basic information and will cause you to consider whether opening such a business is really right for you to do.
SAVE YOUR MONEY!.......2005-12-22
This poorly written, self-published book is nothing but a pathetic attempt to generate business for the author's consulting firm, which she hawks in every chapter. She continually alludes to information that is never provided, although she eventually offers to sell the information for an additional fee. Her self-promotion is interspersed with incessant whining about Ohio's "evil" building inspectors, whose only real fault was that they had the audacity to actually enforce the building codes in her state. There is litle information of real value in this book and it will quickly be apparent why it was self-published.

If the money that passes through the hands of African Americans was ever centralized, it would equal the gross national product of the ninth largest country on earth. Despite this collective wealth, few blacks take advantage of this country's stock market--a trend financial journalist Carolyn Brown would like to reverse. The Millionaires' Club, written under the auspices of Black Enterprise magazine, is a concise guide outlining the basics of acquiring money through establishment of an investment club. It works like this:
Groups of people pool their money to invest. The club requires members to plunk down a set amount of money each month, which it then uses to buy shares in securities--mostly stocks. Profits and dividends are plowed back into the portfolio until the club reaches its financial goal. The appeal is simple: As a group, people with small amounts of money can consolidate their financial resources to make larger purchases of company shares.
Brown details everything you need to know to start a club, including recruiting members, regulating the group, and how to become profitable. She advises clubs to invest in growth companies, to diversify investments, reinvest earnings and dividends, and to focus on long-term investments. Brown also advocates the use of the Internet, investing in real estate, and the building of youth investment clubs. All told, Carolyn Brown's wealth-building wisdom is sound and realistic: "The good news about belonging to an investment club is that not only are you helping to enhance the group's cash reserves, but you are learning personal wealth building for the enrichment of your family, children, and the next generation." A good investment, indeed. --Eugene Holley Jr.

Excellent guide to organize an investment club from scratch!.......2007-01-06
The author based this book on the official gude from the National Association of Investors Corporation, which is like the bible to organize investment clubs. But this book adds a lot of practical experience from other investment clubs that the official guide doesn't have. Go ahead and buy it if you are thinkiing of getting a good hold in organizing your investment club.
No Fuss No Muss Personal Finance.......2001-05-02
Let's face it. Personal finance is a drag. So many books, so much advice, and so much confusion. That is until you read the Millionaire's Club. Surprisingly, the author Brown does an excellent job. I say surprisingly because most personal finance writers seem to be just as dense as the very books that they keep churning out to the general public. Brown's book, however is short, clear and helpful. She's a straight shooter that believes in serving up no fuss and no muss personal finance. Millionaire's Club has got to be one of the best how-to investment club books currently on the market. I should know. I started an investment club three weeks after reading the book.
churning out.do a poor job of explaining difficult of little to of cutting through the morass of information involved in started starting ersonal finance jargon boiling down difficult concepts and Starting an investment club is Brown's book is not original, but it certainly is
Great Info.......2000-09-18
This book is a must have for those taking the necessary steps to a bright financial future. This book provided necessary information on all aspects of investment clubs from startup to management. I highly recommend this book.
