2 out of 5 stars Good Intro.......2007-04-25

This is a good intro, without much information on actual grants for specific purposes. If you are an educator, non-profit, or individual interested in grants related to technology, for innovation, curriculum, development, emerging technologies, I recommend Technology Grant News: Everything Technology: Awards-Contests-Grants-Scholarships. Technology Grant News: Everything Technology [2007]:Awards ¿ Contests ¿ Grants -Scholarships ¿ Fellowships

3 out of 5 stars Grant writing for dummies....as a reference.......2006-11-13

This is a good starter book, but it does not provide quality resources for you to practice the skills gained. You should build your skills with quality templates, references, wording techniques. I would caution readers to move on to a good intermediate work like Government Funding and You. This book will provide you with the skills to put together a quality grant with the potential LAND that grant. This book is an excellent start, but Government Funding and You is a crucial next step.

5 out of 5 stars Awarded $250,000 Federal grant because of this book!.......2006-08-26

I was working at a NON-PROFIT organization and the departing Executive Director refused to submit a renewed grant request to a Federal agency. I was tasked to do it instead within one week. I had no support of the staff or Board of Directors because they did not have a clue of the process. I had never written a grant. So, I purchased this book and read it over the weekend. It was easy to read and made sense. I simply followed the book...identified a problem/an unmet need and a way to solve it. Thank you! The agency was awarded $250,000 to fund two of the full-time employees over a 2 year period.

5 out of 5 stars Love this series!.......2006-07-22

Each one of the "Dummies" books has been so helpful, not only for me but for my daughter who is in high school. Everything from religion to business. "Grant Writing for Dummies" is in keeping with the others: very informative, gets to the point for the layperson, and is done in a very easy-to-use format. So far, I haven't come across one book in this series that isn't helpful!

5 out of 5 stars I Can Do This!.......2005-07-26

I found this book extemely helpful and easy to read. It reduced the mystery of the grant world to something even I could understand. Based on the title, I have to say that I can do this!

Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

5 out of 5 stars Has history been tampered with?.......2007-10-23

Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/RAZQNMXM4M9CL Has history been tampered with? Yes, it has! Did events and eras such as the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, the Roman Empire , the Dark Ages, and the Renaissance, actually occur within a very different chronology from what we've been told? Yes, they certainly did!

The history of humankind is both drastically shorter and dramatically different than generally presumed.

Why is it so? On one hand, it was usual custom to justify the claims to title and land by age and ancestry, and on the other the court historians knew only too well how to please their masters. The so called universal classic world history is a pack of intricate lies for all events prior to the 16th century. World history as we learn it today was entirely fabricated in the 16th-18th centuries. It's likely that nobody told you before, but

there is not a single piece of firm written evidence or artefact that is reliably and independently dated prior to the 11th century.

Naturally, after what you've learned in school and university, you will not easily believe that the classical history of ancient Rome, Greece, Asia, Egypt, China, Japan, India, etc., is manifestly false.

You will point accusing finger to the pyramids in Egypt, to the Coliseum in Rome and Great Wall of China etc., and claim, aren't they really ancient, thousands of years ancient? Well, there is no valid scientific proof that they are older than 1000 years!

The oldest original written document that can be reliably dated belongs to the 11th century!

New research asserts that Homo sapiens invented writing (including hieroglyphics) only 1000 years ago. Once invented, writing skills were immediately and irreversibly put to the use of ruling powers and science.

The consensual chronology we live with was essentially crafted in the 16th century by the Jesuits.

The world history was compiled from contradictory mix of innumerable copies of ancient Latin and Greek manuscripts and other irrefutable proofs delivered by late mediaeval astronomers that were cemented by the authority of writings of the Church Fathers.

Early in life, we learn about ancient history. Children love the magical lessons of history - they are like fairy tales. Teachers recite breathtaking stories; very soon We learn by heart the names and deeds of brave warriors, wise philosophers, fabulous pharaohs, cunning high priests and greedy scribes.

We learn of gigantic pyramids and sinister castles, kings and queens, dukes and barons, powerful heroes and beautiful ladies, emaciated saints and low-life traitors.

Ancient history is based documents, manuscripts, printed books, paintings, monuments and artefacts - called primary sources.

The problem is that neither these ancient documents, nor events described therein can be irrefutably dated, moreover they contradict each other for the most part.

When a school textbook tells us that Genghis Khan in year X or Alexander in year Y, have each conquered half of the world, it means only that it is so said in some of the written sources.

There are no answers to simple questions:

When were these primary sources written?

Where and by whom were these sources found?

It is wrongly presumed that ancient and medieval chronicles, written by Genghis Khan's or Alexander the Great contemporaries and eyewitnesses, are readily available. Actually, only sources written hundreds or even thousands of years after the events are there, compiled mostly in the 16th 18th centuries, or even later.

As a rule, these sources suffered considerable multiple manipulations, falsifications and distortions by editing. At the same time,

innumerable originals of ancient documents under various pretexts were destroyed in Europe under various pretexts.

The names of persons and geographical sites often changed meaning and location during the course of the centuries.

Geographical locations became clearly defined on maps only with the advent of printing.

This made possible the circulation of identical copies of the same map for purposes of the military, navigation, education and governance tasks.

Historians from Oxford say: "hey, everybody knows that Julius Caesar lived in the first century B.C.

`Julius Caesar' statement is only a point of view as

there is simply no irrefutable documentary proof that Julius Caesar or any other great name of antiquity ever existed.

Better than that - extremely rare sources that can be reliably dated back to the 10th-14th centuries A D, do not show the polished picture of classical history.

They show a picture both contradictory and confusing.

All methods of dating of ancient sources and artefacts are erroneous:

Radio-carbon C14 method produces dating with exactitude of plus minus 1500 years, therefore it is too crude for dating of events in historical timeframe!

The Almagest tractate, which lies as corner stone contemporary chronology, compiled in the 2nd century A D by Ptolemy, the founding father of astronomy, contains astronomical data of 9th to 16th century!

The Bronze Age,that has supposedly began 5000 years ago. Bronze is made of 90% copper and 10% tin, but the technology for tin extraction dates back to 14th century A D!.

All eclipses contained in manuscripts, like Thucydides one, relating 'ancient' events have exclusively medieval dating. All horoscopes cut in stone or painted in Egyptian temples, like Dendera have exclusively early medieval dating solutions.

Not quite what you have learned in school? Open your eyes, and, you will find sufficient proof to reach step by step the inevitable conclusion that the classical chronology is false and therefore, that the history of ancient and medieval world universally accepted today, is also false. Have a fresh outlook on everything said or printed about "ancient" and "enigmatic" Roman, Greek and Egyptian, medieval as well as all other "lost and found" civilizations.

Antiquity and Dark Ages are phantoms invented in the 16th 18th and polished in 19th 20thcenturies. Human civilization is in fact barely 1000 years old!

This book will change your perception of History forever!
What if Ancient Rome, Greece and Egypt were invented during Renaissance?
What if The Old Testament was a rendition of events of the Middle Ages?
What if Jesus Christ was born in 1053 and crucified in 1086 AD?
Sounds Unbelievable?
Not after you've read "History: Fiction or Science?" by Anatoly Fomenko, the genius mathematician.
Armed with astronomy and computers Anatoly Fomenko turns History into a rocket science.

3 out of 5 stars Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

5 out of 5 stars Grant-Writing book recommendation.......2007-09-11

This book is very well-organized, presenting the information in a step-by-step manner that makes it manageable for neophyte would-be grant-writers. I have no doubt that it will serve me well as a continuing resource even as I gain skills and experience.

4 out of 5 stars Helped me through my class!.......2007-05-14

I used this book for a grant writing class I've taken and found it to be a great guide. It's written well and very user friendly. This is definately a book that I'll keep and use through the years when it comes to writing future grants! The resources in the back are helpful and it's fun taking the quizzes and realizing how much I know. Good book...worth buying.

3 out of 5 stars More for organizations than individuals.......2007-04-05

It more geared towards someone writing for grants for a non-profit as opposed to artist/business grants.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Guideline.......2007-01-10

Outstanding guideline for anyone needing advice and direction
in regards to writing proposals. Also shows how to present your
group or organization in the best light.

This was the first grant-writing book I ever purchased. It has been some time indeed. This is a quality book, but it doesn't provide alot of sources for funding. I would suggest Government Funding and You for a more complete view. But I would very strongly suggest this book.

If you ever think you will have to write a fundraising letter, you NEED this book. Too many people think it is just like writing any other kind of letter but it isn't. There is a rhyme and, more importantly, a reason to it. Don't write a fundraising letter without reading this book first.

4 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2007-01-17

I am not an expert in writing fundraising letters. So, when I found a book with a title "How to write successful Fundraising Letters" it was as if I had won the lottery. I couldn't wait to get my hands on it because I was on a dealine to write a fundraising letter for a non-profit organization for which I had volunteered. I ordered the book, and paid just as much to have it deleivered the next day (local bookstores do not carry it). I found the book to be a tutorial and not something I could quickly benefit from. It is written to teach how to properly write and follow-up a fundraising campaign letter. The samples provided were very specific to 3-4 scenarios and did not offer much context. I guess I was looking for a book with hundreds of samples so that I could pick and choose phrases, paragraphs, etc.

5 out of 5 stars Success at Last.......2007-01-11

I have toyed around with various funderaising letters over the years, reinventing the wheel each time. This book is a tremendous guideline for writing great fundraising letters and has many great examples.
I was able to raise over $100,000.00 in a recent campaign and for the first time I have had a number of people comment on how well the letter appealed to them, and how well it was written. I keep this book close at hand.

5 out of 5 stars Great Reference .......2006-04-27

I found this book to be a great overview with lots of examples. It's been shared around our office over and over again!

5 out of 5 stars Jam Packed with Samples.......2005-05-14

In addition to advice on how to write successful fundraising letters, this book contains hundreds of models, samples, and excerpts of actual letters. One section covers letters soliciting volunteer help. (summary by South TX Library System)
This book has 378 pages, so chances are very good that you will find a sample letter close to what you need. Inexperienced letter writers tend to be too wordy and turn off their potential funders. I really recommend that people pay close attention to the advice in this book.

5 out of 5 stars The most frequently borrowed fund raising book I own.......2001-04-25

Chapter 15, Obtaining Substantial Financial Support with the Foundation and Corporate Request Letter, is the most dog-eared chapter of my copy. Government and non-profit colleagues whose core job and expertise is not in the area of fund raising, love this book.

3 out of 5 stars moderately helpful.......2000-07-14

My pleasure in the book was minimized when I came to the sections on telemarketing, etc. . . not what I expected. The portions of the book that were helpful, were A-1.

4 out of 5 stars Extremely useful shelf-reference for fund-raisers.......1999-11-18

Not only does this book offer real-life examples of letters for every conceivable fund-raising campaign and situation, it explains the structure of successful fund-raising letters. I refer to it frequently. 5 stars I reserve for anything written by Mal Warwick, who is in a class by himself. But 4 stars means I found Mr. Kuniholm's book well worth the money, repeatedly useful, practical, educational and wise.

4 out of 5 stars Very useful book.......2007-03-08

I have been reading lots of books on how to write grants, being new to the field. They are all good, this one is concise and well laid out, the information is clear and the samples are good. I would recommend it. We will see how successful I am...that will be the real test of how well the book worked.

4 out of 5 stars Pragmatic worksheets.......2004-04-09

If you come in to our nonprofit management support organization and ask for a book on grant proposal writing, there are two we'll pull out right away: Grassroots Grants and Winning Grants Step by Step. We're often asked which to choose. Of all the books we see, these are the two we most often recommend, but they do have different approaches.

Winning Grants Step by Step takes a pragmatic tone. It accepts the rules of the game and offers to show you how to win within them. "Most funders prefer to give grants for new and expanding programs or in support of special projects and new ideas rather than for the general operating expenses of an organization or the ongoing costs of established programs," it explains. "Because funders have these preferences, this workbook uses the idea of creating a new program as the basis for developing a proposal." (The book does also give examples of core operating support proposals, and does start with a planning guide to help you see which programs fit your priorities).
In the introduction to Grassroots Grants, on the other hand, the publisher shares her qualms about publishing a book about grants at all, preferring that the reader focus first on developing more renewable and less restricted gifts from individual donors. "This book is about two things: money and power," says Grassroots Grants, and calmly analyzes the dynamics of both in the grant proposal process. This big-picture view is in the end more pragmatic - it encourages you to take control of the grantseeking process by searching out those funders and pitching those programs that really best fit with what you are trying to do.

Both books have excellent project planning guidelines. As Winning Grants Step by Step observes, "Generally, organizations will spend approximately 80 percent of their time planning a project and only 20 percent of their time writing and packaging a proposal," so this section is obviously very important. Both books ask questions such as "What is unique about your organization's project?" "Is anyone else working on a similar project?" "What members of your community support each project?"

Both also contain useful information about finding appropriate funders, which is key to the process - much more important than your writing skills is finding the right funder who cares about projects like yours. Although Winning Grants Step by Step puts this information at the end in an appendix, you should really read it first, particularly the excellent section on corporate giving programs. Grassroots Grants contains very helpful guidelines about what to consider when deciding whether a funder is really a good fit for your organization, and detailed information about ways to develop good relationships with potential funders.

The books have different approaches to how they help you with your own writing. Winning Grants Step by Step has a workbook format, with questionnaires you fill out as you go, so that by the time you have completed them you will have addressed most of the subjects covered in a typical proposal, and it will be easy to cut and paste the appropriate bits into the funder's preferred format. It comes with all the worksheets on a CD-ROM so you can fill them out electronically and reuse them. If you like project planning, but get nervous about the writing process, this format may help walk you through. Grassroots Grants has questionnaires throughout the text, and it has more examples of proposals, query letters, and other documents with notes on how they were developed. If you like to write by reading examples to inspire you to your own purposes, this book will suit you.

Ultimately, these books complement one another. Even if you prefer the workbook format of Winning Grants Step by Step, the "big picture" you get from reading Grassroots Grants will help you answer all those questions. Likewise, if you prefer the style of Grassroots Grants, you can still benefit from the excellent sections on overhead costs and planning for sustainability in Winning Grants Step by Step.

3 out of 5 stars good, basic overview but don't use alone.......2003-09-25

I am a consultant, grantwriter, and trainer who specializes in technical assistance and training for HIV/AIDS services. I provide a copy of this workbook to participants in my grantwriting ("Bringing Home the Money!) workshops, because it's a good, basic overview of many of the different parts of the request for funding proposal.

What's most useful about Carlson's book is that it provides a summary for participants and another way of explaining some of the things I teach. There are also good worksheets included in Carlson's book, designed to help first-time grantwriters grapple with the different proposal elements. Carlson also includes a CD-ROM with different forms that can also be helpful.

However, there are important limits to Carlson's book, thus the caveat in my review title that you NOT use this book alone.

1. Carlson's book is very general. For certain funders or funding areas (such as in HIV/AIDS), grantwriters need to include and be very familiar with things like public health data and certain standardized evaluation methods. You will not get that kind of information or guidance in Carlson's book.

2. Some of the sections lack sufficient details that can help first-time grantwriters better understand the concepts. For example, the budget and budget justification section are weak. She does not provide any explanation for "priority/target populations," a concept important to HIV/AIDS and other public health programs.

3. Carlson starts off with a good premise: Helping grantwriters understand the writing of a good proposal by having funders--the people who would actually read and decide on your proposal--speak about what makes good and bad proposals. It's a great idea and one that is the backbone to my own workshop. However, it is a thread that Carlson quickly drops and doesn't bother to integrate into the entire workbook.

4. Finally, the different elements are presented in such a way that they remain disintegrated, separate, fragmented from each other. In reality, a good proposal (i.e., one that is most likely to be funded) includes all the required elements (abstract, description of need, work plan, goals and objectives, evaluation, etc.) that are written well, are strong in content, and all work together in an integrated way.

To Carlson's credit on my last point, I should note that very few writers of grantwriting books and guides have succeeded in showing the latter, although I think it's one of the best signs of a well-written, strong, viable program.

In summary, then, this is a good first place to start if you're new to grantwriting or need a refresher. But definitely use it in conjunction with a great workshop and/or other grantwriting resources that are available.

3 out of 5 stars Good for foundation grants, not so good for gov't grants.......2003-05-15

The information contained in this book primarily applies to non-governmental entities soliciting grants from non-profit foundations. Organizations like the NSF, NIH, etc., have fairly strict guidelines and don't permit the "excesses" encouraged in this book.

As the review title states, this would probably be a very useful book for a charitable organization looking to obtain funds from corporate foundations. However, if you're looking for research money from a government organization like Nat'l Science Foundation or Dep't of Education, this book is virtually useless.

3 out of 5 stars Not impressed.......2007-08-06

After reading all of the reviews here on Amazon I jumped at buying this book. I thought it would be the only source I needed, for now. However, as soon as I started reading it I was completely lost and I felt like my non-profit idea was a lost cause. This book appears to best represent large non-profits, or organizations that are already est.

The leading chp. discussed boards, not even helpful hints on building a board, just information on how to strengthen your board and how to give them clear duties. Huh, this was totally disconcerting for me b/c I don't even have a board! By chp 3 the author finally discussed something that I could use, except I was so befuddled at this point that I didn't want to continue. Why talk about the importance of planning or developing a plan in chp 3, shouldn't this come sooner? Why not break down what non-profits are to some ppl and how they have changed in the first few chps.? Why instead talk about boards and how to call meetings in the first chp.? None of this was particularly helpful for someone like me.

I think this is a great overview for ppl already have an organization but want to improve it. For people starting like me or starting small I recommend "How to Manage an Effective Nonprofit Organization." Now that book so far has been indispensable.

5 out of 5 stars Very good read.......2007-07-19

I purchased the book on a whim and in a hurry, basically based on other reviews and what was inside the book. I recently just started a Christian non profit organization and needed direction. This book provided me valuable information on what I need to know once I'm basically up and running - which is ok because I have plenty of pages highlighted and saved with posted notes! I enjoyed it.

5 out of 5 stars How to Manage an Effective Nonprofit.......2007-01-24

Super book. Concise, well written and just the information needed to get our museum effort on track. I'll have our entire board read it.

5 out of 5 stars A Nonprofit Corporation Is Still a Corporation.......2006-01-16

Author Michael A. Sand, a consultant to nonprofit organizations for more than 25 years, has condensed his experience and knowledge of not-for-profit agencies into an information-packed book. He thoroughly covers the ABCs of managing a community service agency - from forming and operating a governing board to writing better grant proposals to hiring and supervising a productive staff. This handy reference is straightforward and easy to follow. It tackles many of the problems nonprofit organizations face everyday. Each chapter is accessibly divided into an outline format with headlines and bullet points, making the information easy to find and digest. The author includes sound, basic management material that might apply to most small businesses, as well as nonprofits, but unfortunately does not include case studies, anecdotes or real life examples to support his suggested strategies. Still, if we ever offered a start-up or refresher course called Nonprofit Agency Management 101, this book would be required reading.

5 out of 5 stars Fun to read and jam-packed with essential information.......2007-10-15

I could not put Tom's book down and read it in a night. There are some many great tips and insights -- I will not write another thing without this book at my side!

5 out of 5 stars I read this book straight through..........2007-10-11

The material in this book is as invaluable as the style in which it is written. I found this book incredibly motivating, informative, stimulating, and fun to read. Thanks Tom! I feel utterly refreshed and excited to write now, instead of dreading it.

5 out of 5 stars Just Read It!.......2007-07-26

This book is easy to read, makes you laugh, teaches you how to write better and helps you raise more money. It just doesn't get any better any this. If you write anything to donors or prospective donors you should stop and read this first. You won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars All Fundraisers Can Benefit From This Book.......2007-06-18

For research purposes, I have more than 30,000 direct mail samples, countless annual reports, and hundreds of newsletters in my business library. And I'd say probably anywhere from 2 to 3% of them are really good (that means they raise a lot of money). They practice what Tom Ahern teaches you in his new book.

If you've ever had the opportunity to see Tom present - and he presents at many conferences around North America - then you'll know why you need this book. His way of thinking about donors, and what they want, will enable you to improve almost any donor-directed publication that you produce.

I strongly encourage anyone working for a nonprofit to buy this book - almost certainly it will improve the quality of the information you give to your donors, and the amount of money they give to you.

5 out of 5 stars Like being in a candy shop with a pocketful of money.......2007-05-21

Two great things about Tom Ahern: 1) he writes in crisp, clear, jargon-free language, and 2) virtually every sentence contains advice or a tip I can actually use. In this straightforward but packed book, he taught me to always put myself in the donor's shoes when I'm writing, to never write anything that doesn't include an offer, to run like hell from "writing by committee", the emotional triggers that get people reaching for their wallets, and how to write great headlines and good copy. I'm not sure what else you can ask from a book that fits in your back pocket, reads deliciously the second and third time, and even apologizes for leaving out a chapter he'd call "Feeling Stupid". Feeling stupid is what you should feel if you don't order this book right after you finish this review.

Describes how to write an attention getting news release.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars excellent advice.......2005-07-16

I read Catherine McIntyre's book before writing my first and only press release, to publicize my church's program for children with autism.

I did everything Ms. McIntyre told me to do.

That press release won my church a story and photos in the New York Times.

I should add that I'm a professional writer, so I had a leg up on the topic.

But I'd never written a press release in my life. I don't think I'd even read one.

McIntyre told me what I needed to know.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Resource!.......2003-07-23

When I started looking for information on news releases I read a lot of books on the topic. This book, without question, was the best of the bunch. The author is a newspaper reporter and advertising copywriter and knows what it takes to grab the attention of news editors. Before I read this book I tried for a year to get my news releases puiblished. After reading this book I learned what mistakes I'd been making. Now almost every release I send gets printed. The author outlines a foolproof formula for creating newsworthy releases regardless of the topic. Contains loads of examples of news releases that have proven to be successful. Other books I've read were kind of boring and hard to read, but this one is written in a down-to-earth style that's sparked with humor throughout. A thoroughly enjoyable and useful book. Highly recommended!

3 out of 5 stars Not too impressed.......2003-05-17

This book is written in a "hunt and peck" style: you have to hunt for useful information and then peck what is feasbile and what is not. I wasn't too impressed, but I guess all publicity books are the same. It's not like there's much new information out there.

I do recommend "Free Publicity" by Jeff Crilley. ...

4 out of 5 stars Very Useful.......2002-08-30

McIntyre hits the nail on the head witn this one. I've found that my organization's releases have received much higher usage now that we follow her format. We also use Michael Levine's Guerrilla PR: Wired because of its strength in updating public rlations techniques to the Internet.

4 out of 5 stars from someone in the biz.......2002-08-22

It's rare that you read something informative and entertaining. This book is written with humour and intelligence. It isn't exactly in the class of Michael Levine's Guerrilla PR Wired, but it is a gool tool to have around. The specific nature of the book is also helpful for those with specific questions.
