This guy knows what he's talking about........2007-05-22
Gerry Frank is a local boy (Portland, OR) and keeps us informed about where to go in Oregon, but he also knows "all the right stuff" about New York. He is definitely a man to follow when it comes to finding a great restaurant and more.
Overrated.......2006-10-08
We bought an early edition of this book, and have found it wanting. Yes, there were some good shopping recommendations. But the ratings for restaurants and many other points of interest are just not that good.
The Blue Guide to New York is a much better bet, for my money, particularly given the book's inclusion of establishments long closed--or destroyed by terrorists.
My Bible for every trip to NYC.......2006-05-23
The 'List by Item' at the front of the store and restaurant chapters is invaluable. The boxed tidbits make this guide book easier and more enjoyable to read. With the changing of NYC the author's suggestion of calling a business before a visit sure makes sense.
gerry frank's new york.......2006-03-03
fantastic book for anyone visiting or living in NYC. the only drawbacks are (1) the absence of any subway map and (2) use of the index to refer back to specific items in the book itself i,e, it's all in there, you just have to work to find it.
Gerry Frank's where to find it, buy it, eat it in New York.......2006-01-15
I purchased the 2006-2007 edition of the book and am shocked to discover that it still includes New York's Finest French Cleaners & Tailors, three gnerations of the same family operating this quality business. The author hasn't bothered to update this edition. The business was sold to Orientals 2 years ago and service is no longer acceptable. The author has absolutely no credibility with regard to anything else listed in the book. I could list many more entries that are invalid. I guess all he does is slap a new cover on the book. This tells you all you need to know about the reliability of this guide - and the ethics of its author.

New York, New York, it's an edible town. The soul food's up and the knishes are down. In New York Eats (More), Ed Levine tells where to find the best of both, and of every other gustatory possibility this melting-pot city has to offer.
In this update of the original New York Eats (1992), Levine adds 200 entries. In all, he covers stores in 15 neighborhoods in the five boroughs, spanning 30 ethnic groups.
Fair warning: Look up one entry and an hour later, you will still be reading. Levine's passion, sometimes controversial opinions, and ardent style are utterly compelling. Present and former New Yorkers can kiss off half a day every time they get near this book. And Levine now shares his e-mail address, so you can argue back and share your own favorites.
Die-hard ethnic foodies may notice one shortcoming in New York Eats (More). Some identities within major ethnic groups, such as Thai in the Asian entries, are missing. This may have happened because Levine does not cover restaurants. When this shortcoming is remedied, as it no doubt will be in a future edition, this will be the ultimate, as well as the most exciting, New York food guide.--Dana Jacobi

Customer Reviews:
Because of New York Eats I bought this book.......1999-12-21
Ed Levine is the host of a funny and very informative local New York restaurant and food review show called "New York Eats". I have repeatly sent in emails hoping to get a free copy of his book but to no avail. Alas I recently bought this book and it has helped me on many occasions. From finding the best pizza in NYC to the best take out fois gras. A indispensable gift for someone living in New York City and surrounding areas and even better for someone about to visit and they want to know where to get the best food in the best city on earth.
Comprehensive and entertaining - fun and useful.......1997-09-03
My copy of the previous edition of this book is dog-eared and worn because I use it so much as a guide, reference and and entertainment. Levine knows New York, food, and people. He knows his stuff but he's not snooty about it. He's as much at home writing about Gray's Papaya hot dogs as he is about the finest wines

A God-send for Wayward Southerners in the Big Apple!.......1999-06-02
Any southerner living in New York City will appreciate this lively, well-written restaurant guide that can soothe all your cravings. Soul food, bbq, Louisiana cooking, and any other country foodstuffs you can think of are right here in NYC (believe it or not!), and these southern-born boys have taste-tested all of them for us and come up with some real winners. If you find your stomach churning for grits and sweet potato pie the way I do, this book should be at your side always.
Customer Reviews:
Classic!.......2002-03-19
Truly original. There are no "oriental" stereotypes in this important book. It is purely Asian American. I'm sure it will be treasured throughout the years. Eat a Bowl of Tea came out in 1961 and it is the first Chinese American novel set in Chinese America. That alone should motivate you to buy this book. It's a shame that Louis Chu is no longer with us, he could've authored more books -- "Wow, your mother!"
I am impressed by the emotional depth of this work........1999-07-09
After reading Louis Chu's book, much of recent work by Asian Americans seemed even more lackluster than before. Chu writes about Asian American culture with the emotional depth and dignity that it deserves. I got this book from my brother who also felt dissatisfied with the representations of Asian life a la Amy Tan, Kingston, etc. They don't seem to write with the same respect for Asian romanticism that Chu recognizes with such literary power. If you want to see an intimate, caring portrait of NYC Chinatown, start here...
A great experience of New York's Chinatown.......1997-05-14
Eat a Bowl of Tea by Louis Chu was first published in 1961. It's a satire of New York's Chinatown's bachelor society.Characters include the Ben Loy the son of a "bachelor" father. He has been sent to China after WWII to get married. After getting married to his bride Mei Oi, they return to America where he finds himself impotent to love his traditional good wife. Another character Ah Song is a thug and a gambler who seduces Mei Oi. The story continues and basically depics Chinatown and the Chinese Americans of the time. In the novel there are examples of the language with the heavy Chinese accent. The story expresses the theme of the bachelor's society and and the morals of a traditional wife compared to a prositute.

Nothing Special.......2006-09-26
There are a ton of eating guides about New York. And this one gets lost in the crowd. The descriptions of the restaurants are brief and vague. What I thought was going to be a guide to the affordable culinary gems, was merely a list of cheap restaurants with little effort spent on separating "cheap and good" from "just cheap".
Very useful.......2005-09-03
I like it. I did find one error (a dish they recommended was not on the restaurant's menu), but otherwise it's been very handy to have around. I find myself reaching for it instead of my zagats, and that says something.
A lot to chew on.......2005-08-06
I heard about this book through a posting on Chowhound.com and decided to give it a try. Must say, I'm intriguied. There are a lot of listings in this book that I haven't seen covered elsewhere. In my own neighborhood (UES), it pretty much hits the nail on the head. All my favorites are in here, even the ones I thought only I knew about! (Why, oh why, must they let the cat out of the bag about Pyramida... oh well. I guess it deserves the success...)
Move over Zagat.......2005-08-04
This book is an indispensible guide to daily eating in Manhattan. Every restaurant in the book that I have tried has been at least good, and some of the places that I have found have been truly excellent. Where this book truly shines is in picking out the real jewels among the thousands of small, nondescript restaurants in the city. Viv's Guide also includes very accurate pricing information, which is certainly a welcome change from the the seemingly random amounts given in Zagats.
Additionally, Viv's Guide is pocket-size, meaning that you can carry it around with you at all times and be able to stun your friends with your intimate knowledge of NYC restaurants. Another handy feature is that people who purchase the book can access the book's full content online at the author's website.
If you are a New Yorker who eats out frequently, particularly on any kind of budget, then I highly recommend this book.

Good & Cheap Ethnic Eats in New York City.......2000-12-21
This is a great book. It covers many resturants in the area. It provides good, accurate & quality information on these places. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who is a new New Yorker or long-lived resident.
don't try the japanese restaurants in this book.......2000-05-31
well, I bought this book mainly becuase of the attactive title. I took a look at the recommended list of chinese restautants, there is joe's Shanghai restaurant which I think it is good as well. So I think it should be a reliable guide. It seems to me that I should have a close taste as the author does. However, I am so disapointed about the japanese restautants the author recommends in the book. Especially "the taste of tokyo" which is the most terrible american japanese restautant I have been to. They have dirty sashimi which made me run to the lady's room a few times after having dinner there. Can you trust the spanish chef can make authentic japanese food? I don't for sure. the food there is not cheap either. I have been trying more than 50 japanese restuarants in Manhattan, a lot of them in San Marcs are good. I don't know why Robert names this one. Is it just becuase it is so easy to get lost on the way to the lady's room? I love japanese food and I sincerely suggest the author should review his list.

Attention all book store owners...... Reserve a shelf for this book. Promote this book like it was the holy bible. This book should be in the shopping bags of all shoppers this ThanksGiving. I suggest all home makers leave a copy on the kitchen table for all guests to see. The recepies in this book are great, and the recepies should be made for every party.
Fantastic and essential guide to dining in NYC.......1999-02-10
Sietsema has a rule for eating out in New York: he looks for the strangest restaurants he can find, orders the oddest thing on the menu and tells you all about it in enthusiastic and clear prose. This wonderful guide will tell you where to find jerk chicken in the Bronx, Tibetan yak butter tea on the Upper West Side and explain why you HAVE to go to Jersey City for the best Pakistani food. I don't travel to New York without this book and neither should you.

Good Things on Every Page.......2002-02-27
While I was still living in New York I used this book extensivly. That was about a year ago. Let me tell ya me and my friends had a great time using this book. We found great bargains and places to hang out. If I were in New York still I would by the new book edition. Not because this one is out dated but because I want more.
old info.......2000-06-20
This book is completely oudated and every lead that I thought I could use was completely useless. Apparently there is a new edition but it appears that this older edition has been outdated for years. Don't buy this book.
Read it...it works!.......1999-11-28
For Christmas, last year, we gave our youngest son, Kerry a trip to NYC. He has ask to go for years. This is one of the books that we got, to allow Kerry to map out his trip. We had a limited amount of money and he got to choose how we spent it.
We used Mr. Cheaps advice on hotels and found ourselves at this wonderful hotel, in the heart of midtown Manhattan. Our room was huge, by NYC standards, complete with a marble bath. So what if the complementary newspaper was in Italian. The Jolley is a chain owned by Italians. Kerry was mighty impressed. The location allowed us to use the subway, or walk saving us even more money.
These books are well written. This guy knows his towns. Lots of stuff that only locals usually know. Gave me enough savy to have a great time in NYC.
Kerry and I had four great days in NYC. In no small part thanks to Mr. Cheap!
Organized, well written, concise.......1999-03-04
We found a very inexpensive hotel in the heart of Manhattan. We were a little nervous until we arrived and found the hotel to be clean, friendly and best of all - cheap! We did not have to give up any of the amenities we usually have in hotels to have an inexpensive room. He had sections of the city divided up and it was easy to follow.
