Book Description

The writers who succeed are those who develop a unique and distinctive voice, one that sets them apart from the crowd. Inside, Les Edgerton shows writers how to find that elusive "voice" without years of struggle.

By finding their voices, writers dramatically improve their chances of getting noticed by editors and agents and, therefore, of getting published. The book's lively text (full of "voice," as one might expect) is loaded with practical, accessible advice that any beginning writer can understand. The book's unique approach to the subject will also appeal to more seasoned writers who have yet to achieve the level of success they desire.

Les Edgerton is the author of five books, including the thriller Over Easy. His short stories have appeared in many literary and mystery magazines, as well as Best American Mystery Stories, 2001. His nonfiction articles have appeared in magazines such as Brides and Business Digest. He teaches at St. Francis University and conducts online courses through Vermont College, the University of Hawaii at Manoa, and PaintedRock.com. He lives in Ft. Wayne, Indiana.

5 out of 5 stars Great reference for writers.......2007-07-21

I know when I start reading a book, one thing that jumps out at me is if the characters seems "real." Someone who has the skill of writing with a good voice can make the characters come alive on the page, characters you'll remember long after the you close the book.
Finding Your Voice teaches writers how to use their own voice when writing, not someone else's. The book also helps with the un-learning of old rules, or at least knowing when to break them to make for better writing. Edgerton has a way of teaching writers what they need to know in a entertaining way, so the book is enjoyable to read as well as informative.

5 out of 5 stars Feels like opening the windows of a dusty house! .......2007-07-18

This book is for aspiring writers not for professional writers. This is an important point, because other reviewers have said this book gives too basic advice. Basic, but paramount.

The basic idea behind this book is that many authors suffer from a terrible affliction. He calls it "the writer's inferiority complex" It results from an overadulation of the published word.

Some might say that it is obvious that one should be original.

The fact is that as aspiring writers we are constanly studying the good stuff, good authors, and we are always studying technique. The result of this is that we have a tremendous and heavy influence to carry on our backs. The danger is real: if we are constantly trying to study the best, we might end up becoming a copy of them. Which, paradoxically, is far from being the best we can.

The solution is simple. Buy this book if you have noticed that you write too much like someone.

If someone tells you that you write too much like someone else... buy this book.

If as you write you begin thinking "oh, maybe I shouldn't write this because MR. X or MADAMME Y wrote in this other way... so, maybe I'm not writing good enough", then you should seriously consider getting this book. So you can overcome your self doubts when you compare yourself to your heroes.

If you have an original voice and are very aware that you are not copying (even by osmosis) someonelse's work, then skip this book.

Here is a quote from the book that I particularly liked:

"The astute artist in any field knows that he or she can't "be everything to everyone," and so cultivates his or her own particular and inimitable style, thereby appealing to some and not to others. That's fine. That's the way it should be".

It certainly is fine... how boring it would be writing like your idols!

4 out of 5 stars Enlightening, but suspicions confirmed........2006-11-01

I picked up a copy of Finding Your Voice out of curiosity. Over the years, I'd come to suspect that the term voice was being misused as a concept of understanding writing. I wondered if this book would enlighten me, or if it would confirm my suspicions. It did both.

In Finding Your Voice, Les Edgerton does a great job of coaching writers on how to bring out their own personality in their writing. He explains why writers often fall short in this effort. He recommends exercises to bring out the writer's personality. He suggests techniques to make fiction-writing more reader friendly. Overall, the book covers a lot of the art and craft of writing style. I suspect Les Edgerton is a very good writing teacher.

But my suspicions regarding voice, as it is often used to describe fiction, were confirmed. One of the problems is that voice refers to different subjects. In a story, each character can have a distinctive voice in dialogue and during introspection. Also, if the writer chooses to utilize an on-stage narrator, that narrator can have a distinctive voice. The problem with voice is when the term is used to describe the writer's style.

Unfortunately, the subject of the writer's voice has morphed into confusing and misleading nonsense. The next-to-last chapter of Finding Your Voice provides examples of the conflicting views of top writers, editors, and agents regarding this subject.

Today's novel-writer would be better served if Les Edgerton would: 1) re-name the book Developing Your Own Writing Style, 2) delete all reference to writer's voice, and 3) expand the text to more fully cover other aspects of style.

Although Finding Your Voice confirmed my suspicions regarding voice, I found plenty of ideas and insight to make the book worth its purchase price, and more.

2 out of 5 stars Common Sense.......2006-09-27

Save your money: Just do a quick web search for finding your voice in writing - any quick list on the subject will contain the same advice found in this book. The book delivers the most basic information and repeats it endlessly.

I also found the author to be annoying. That is a matter of personal opinion but I strongly recommend reading a few excerpts to get a feel for *his* voice before you try to read the whole book.

5 out of 5 stars A bold departure.......2005-04-13

Les Edgerton has a lot to say about voice, and the way he says it is as important as what he says. He shows how a writer's voice is much like that used for speaking. It expresses who the writer is. It's not the writerly style assumed by new writers as they struggle to follow the rules, punctuation-perfect but without any soul, the kind of writing that gives you nightmares about diagramming sentences. It's not the mechanical style of writing I was forced to adopt as a technical writer. It's not the monotone of academia or the teletype chatter of a newspaper. Voice reveals the living, breathing person behind the words. It can be casual or formal, it can follow the rules or not. But in every case voice reflects the individual writer and, when needed, the fictional character.

Unfortunately, finding your voice isn't as easy as defining it. We all struggle with it, whether we're attempting to write something publishable or not. Have you ever agonized over the wording of a sympathy note? A get-well card for someone with a serious illness? You were likely struggling to find your voice. It's when we're tied up in knots to write something important that we're most likely to lose it.

Finding Your Voice first helps us understand how and why we lose our voices. Then it takes us through common obstacles to a natural voice, offering ways to recognize and overcome those obstacles, with exercises designed to help us jump back into our real skins in our writing.

One bold departure from the lessons of other contemporary writing books is Edgerton's assertion that we don't have to write the first draft without editing. In many writing books today we're instructed not to edit during the first draft. "Write in the flow," we're told. "Don't listen to your internal editor." While Edgerton doesn't put down the writing and creativity teachers who profess this, he does acknowledge that's not the best way for all writers. He himself edits while in his first draft. He says it saves him a lot of editing time. He gives the writer permission to do the same, provided it's your voice editing, not the belittling voice of your "Critic Nag Dude." For some of us this approach offers a perverse kind of freedom. It's not just okay to write freely without editing. It's also okay to edit as you go, to let your editor come out and play with your writer, if that's the best way for you.

Edgerton demonstrates that a strong voice is recognizable on the page, in his "Recognizing the Elements of Style Exercise," at the end of Chapter Six. I amazed myself by recognizing most of the seven authors, five of whom I'd never read before. Which reminds me to encourage you writers who're unsure of your voice: Don't just read this book. Do the exercises as well.

5 out of 5 stars Mailbox Aunt!.......2007-04-11

I love being a Mailbox Aunt! In this world of techno, gotta-have-it-now, instant gratification world, writing is underestimated. This book gives you ideas on how fits into fits into and can enrich many areas of your life. My sister's kids have never known a world without the Internet, cell phones and e-mail; however, one of the biggest highlights of their week is receiving an envelope in the mail box (yes, snail mail) from Aunt Donna. Writing as a form of communication has become a lost art. I highly recommend Dr. Klauser's book by the same name of this book's Chapter 14, "Write It Down, Make It Happen." That is my favorite book by Dr. Klauser.

5 out of 5 stars Staying warm in the heart and true to it too.......2007-03-18

I agree with another reviewer that allowing the heart to express itself on paper can be a tremendous healing benefit. One of the most important tasks in life is to maintain a connection to our heart. Writing as a practice encourages the heart to speak and uses our right brain to create solutions. This is a beautiful practice from Henriette Ann Klauser along with her other book: Write it Down/Make it Happen.

5 out of 5 stars My copy is weathered, written in.... obviously much loved!.......2003-06-08

This book is a treasure trove of ideas, inspiration and many many reasons
to remember and ACT on "Putting Your Heart" on paper.

Klauser is an extremely engaging writer. I found myself smiling in
response to what I thought were personal inside jokes like a lyric
from "Sound of Silence" being weaved into a paragraph about the
impact of the vocalization of a baby upon a group of tired, unengaged
adults.

This is a book I find myself continuing to return to over time. I don't

think I ever read through it front to back. Instead, I go to the Table
of Contents to find what calls to my spirit and then I usually find
myself reading a couple chapters before and after that chapter.

I can't imagine any reader coming away with less than 49 ideas to
try out and implement, much beyond what Klauser calls "Now You"
when she specifically asks you to apply what is in the chapter.

Read this book, treasure this book. You will soon notice it is becoming
weathered which is an honor bestowed upon books which are truly loved.

5 out of 5 stars This is a book for everyone!!.......2001-02-07

This book is full of great ideas on communicating with the ones you love. It is a book not only about being heard but hearing what loved ones have to say to you.

5 out of 5 stars Writing To Heal.......2000-10-29

As a writer, I find this book of imformative and creative ways to get your thoughts on paper, fabulous. As a mother who has had a child die, I found the chapter, 'Easing The Pain of Death' to be of interest. While I don't like the term 'recovery' for I feel a mother never recovers from the loss of a child (losing a child is not like breaking a bone, the bone does heal completely and there is recovery. The pain from a child's death will always remain), I was encouraged to read the message that writing does bring healing. I have found this to be true in my own experience. As an advocate for 'writing it down!' I recommend H. A. Klauser's book. ------Alice J. Wisler, author "Slices of Sunlight, A Cookbook of Memories".

    Book Description

"Put Option Writing Demystified" is the only book devoted exclusively to the subject of generating double-digit income returns from a little-known, often misunderstood and conservative investment opportunity known as "put option writing." In fact, it can be more conservative than simply owning stocks alone. And the good news is that this strategy works best during slow growth, flat or even slightly declining markets.

This book fully stands on its own merits, but it can also be viewed as a companion text to "Covered Call Writing Demystified" (see the book description on Amazon.com for more information). Hence the similarity in name. These are the reasons:

    * Put option writing and covered call writing have essentially the same reward and risk characteristics…When used as outlined in the book, they are very conservative (unlike other uses of options)

    * Investors using covered call writing will find opportunities to use put option writing to achieve similar double-digit investment results, but also to have the opportunity to purchase stocks or Exchange Traded Funds at a discount from their present value.

    * The put option writing and covered call writing strategies can both be used within the same portfolio to achieve similar results by differing means, depending on the investor's objectives regarding the individual stock or ETF in question.

    What is put option writing?

Have you been tempted at times to buy a particular stock, but decided not to take the plunge because you thought it might be overpriced…or, just on a hunch, you thought you might be able to pick up the shares at a lower price? Not only might it be possible for you to buy that stock for less, but what if someone were willing to pay you cash today at a double-digit return rate and also give you the opportunity to buy it at a lower price later? Does that sound too good to be true? It's not. It's called "put option writing," and it's available to you on literally thousands of stocks and Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs). Put option writing can be compared with placing a limit order to buy the stock or ETF of your choice at a lower price that you set…and then being paid for it. And, you get paid whether the stock falls to your price or not!

"Put Option Writing Demystified" is totally focused on providing (1) the education you need to fully understand the concepts behind put option writing and (2) a unique easy-to-follow program so that you can implement the strategy yourself without the help of a full-service broker or investment manager.

The book delves deeply into the subject of how to obtain double-digit returns from both out-of-the-money puts and in-the-money puts, with out-of-the money puts being the principal recommended strategy both for realizing the opportunity to achieve consistent double-digit investment returns while you wait to acquire stocks or ETFs of your choice at a discount to their present market value. It also provides short-term technical analysis tools to assist in guiding market forecasts and making even more profitable put writing decisions.

On May 3, 2003 after the annual meeting of his company, Warren Buffett (Chairman of Berkshire Hathaway) said to Maria Bartiromo of CNBC: "If you own equities, over the next twenty or thirty years you'll get a reasonable return…maybe its 6%, maybe its 7%. People who expect 15% a year are doomed to disappointment."

If you believe that "The Oracle of Omaha" is right about a slow-growth market for decades to come, then everything that you need as an investor is here for you in this book to develop and implement a put option writing program that will help you achieve double-digit returns.

In addition to presenting everything you need to know about put option writing and how to implement your own personal put writing program the book provides:

    * Use of a uniquely designed Microsoft® Excel spreadsheet for put writing to assist in reviewing writing selection alternatives so that the best decisions for you are reached to achieve your investment return goal.

    * Details about brokerage accounts, with special emphasis on the use of online discount brokerages for quick, very low cost execution of trades. Web sites for brokerages, charting sources and other technical information are provided.

    * Tax information you need for understanding and administering the income tax aspects of put option writing. This includes the opportunity for deferring taxation of income until a later tax year while enjoying the use of the income now.

How will the baby boomers be able to generate sufficient income on their investments to enjoy a secure retirement? And how will they and others younger than them be able to create a sufficient asset base to provide for their financial security with the dire predictions for the long-term future that we cannot expect markets to perform anywhere near as well as they have in the past?

With interest rates so low and a scarcity of acceptable investment alternatives available to investors, put option writing, as well as covered call writing, may offer two of the best possible opportunities to achieve consistent double-digit investment returns in the slow-growth market we seem sure to encounter ahead.

    1 out of 5 stars Misled.......2005-07-31

The title for this book is patently misleading. Introduction to put options would be more apprpriate; nothing is 'demystified'; granting different levels of experience in options trading if you know the difference between a put and a call save your money. As is the usual with these types of books half to two thirds of the book is devoted to explaining options.

5 out of 5 stars A TRULY AMAZING INVESTMENT IDEA!.......2003-09-19

I would highly recommend this book to any stock investor who is looking for some new ideas to earn back the money they've lost in the bear market. Who ever heard of being paid immediate cash to wait to buy stocks at a lower price? That's what this book taught me to how to do. It sounds too good to be true, but I know it works because I've done it after reading the book. I wanted to buy the Nasdaq 100 Trust (QQQ) at a lower price. Instead of just waiting to see if it went lower, I wrote put contracts on the QQQ at my buy price using what I learned in the book. I collected $485 in cash in my brokerage account the next day. The stock didn't hit my price, so I didn't buy it the first month, but I got to keep the $485, which was a 24% return on an annual basis. The next month I did the same thing (collected $625 this time). My price was hit and I bought the QQQ shares for 15% less than the price when I started this. In the meantime I collected $1,110 while I waited to buy my shares for 15% less. This is explained so well that anyone can do it. Nobody I know seems to know about this. It's all in this book.

    Book Description

This book provides a complete education and implementation program for investors who seek a realistic opportunity to achieve double- and even triple-digit annualized investment returns utilizing a strategy of writing uncovered puts and calls on individual stocks and Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) without owning them and needing only one margin requirement for both the puts and the calls. It is designed for investors who have experience with covered call writing on individual stocks or ETFs, and preferably also with put option writing, and who are prepared to take greater risk to obtain greater returns.

For the option investor, the simultaneous writing of a put and a call option on the same security can provide a two-fold steady stream of cash income utilizing the same margin requirement if structured properly. It can also provide a chance to purchase desired shares of stock at a lower than current market price, if that is the investor's objective. This book will give you the theoretical and practical tools necessary to develop and implement an investment discipline that will provide the opportunity to achieve significant investment returns through writing uncovered put and call combinations on individual stocks and ETFs. Software templates using Excel are also provided for selecting option alternatives and calculating returns on investment.

For investors who have time to watch the market, who have the comfort that comes from knowledge and experience with other option writing strategies, and fully understand and are prepared to take additional investment risk, writing uncovered put and call option combinations offers the opportunity for very high returns at a time when the overall long-term outlook for investment returns, both equity and fixed income, seems to be below their historical averages.

    3 out of 5 stars Interesting read!.......2007-05-27

Have written naked puts a number of times before and although you can loose your shirt quickly with this stratergy am comfortable with the logic behind it. Am not so comfortable with writing naked calls however. This book has got me considering it. As a read it is simple to understand and concise in it's detail of action to take in any situwation should things not turn out as planned, which I liked. I also liked the distinction between trading stocks and etf's and the possible benifits outlined from doing so. The fact it is written by an author with a banking background gives me confidence in his experience of useing the stratergies outlined to use money to make superior returns. Useful book.

      5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2004-12-31

This is a GREAT book. Every page was hard to read, not because of the difficulty of the style, but because of the difficulty I had being confronted with my sin. When you read this book you will be amazed at the depth of need for God's grace, and will be encouraged to seek it. This book gave me great hope because Watson shows us that Christ walks with us through our battle with our sin and sinfulness.

5 out of 5 stars Thought provoking, challenging and encouraging in one........1999-10-12

Whenever you pick up Thomas Watson you know you'll be encouraged, chastened, corrected and excited by his words. Here we have no disappointment. 'Heaven ...' is a masterpiece of encouragement to 'keep at it.' The passage from Matgthew 11 verse 12 is put in its context, opened up and applied to leave the reader in no doubt as to its application. Wonderful stuff! May it achieve its goal and make us more 'violent' christians in the true biblical sense of the word! Take it and may the Lord apply it to you.

4 out of 5 stars Fine Book on Expository Writing.......2000-11-06

A good audience for this book would be any college graduate who has to write (and that's most college graduates). The book tries to undo the damage colleges have done to our students in the writing classrooms.

      Some key principles:

      1. Don't write to impress; write to express. If we write to express, and if we do this well, we will impress our readers with the clean language we use, that is, the clean way we express ourselves.

      2. "Prefer Clear, Familiar Words." This advice echoes the Fowler brothers' Rule 1 in 1908, "Prefer the familiar word to the far-fetched." Far-fetched words in these times are often officialese.

      3. "Keep Most Sentences Short and Simple." Albert Joseph advises us to keep one major idea in a sentence (Bernstein gave the same advice in the 1950s). This is better than advising us to average 15-20 words per sentence.

      4. Use first-choice words and repeat them or use pronouns. This is contrary to what most English teachers advise us. They normally say never to use the same word soon after its previous use. Albert is right; English teachers are wrong. (The first to come up with the writing principle, as far as I know, is Fowler. In 1926 he called this principle "Eloquent Variation.")

I suggest another audience for this book besides college graduates: Writing Instructors. This book will keep them focused (perhaps give them a focus) on what's important in expository writing.

The only bad criticism I have of the book is its failure to give credit to people like Bernstein and Fowler.

3 out of 5 stars Great Tips - if you can translate examples with today's equivalent.......2007-07-09

I found this book helpful for those administrative assistants that are new or fairly new to the field. There are great tips for layout if you have had an extended break in working, and ways to present experience (or lack of experience) and still get your foot in the door for an interview. The resumes presented were, in my opinion, elemental, which is why I would recommend this book for those starting out in the administrative field. Also, some of the examples used will obviously need to be tailored to your situation. There are numerous references to typewriters and wpm, stenographers, etc, that date the book, and you will need to swap this out with what you currently do in your job. (While I may not be average, I personally have not touched a typewriter in my work environment for the last 6 years). There were some great before and after examples of resumes.

However, I am an experienced administrative assistant performs the usual travel arrangements, expenses, and calendaring, and I also actively seek out projects to pursue. My goal in purchasing this book was to show the value of those extra projects on my resume. If this is your intent as well, I would not recommend this book. I also bought Resume Magic: Trade Secrets of a Professional Resume Writer at the same time, and have found it to be much more useful in translating my current tasks into marketable skills, as it is much more robust.

      5 out of 5 stars The Best!.......2007-07-07

I paid 20 cents for this book online and I can't believe how valuable this book really is. I never realized how poorly my resume was untill I read this book. It has all types of scenarios in it such as resume styles for new grads, career changers, job hoppers, etc.

I followed the styles in this book and have had 3 interview requests already in just 2 weeks! It boggles me that the cheapest book I bought was the biggest return for me!

You will not be disappointed by this book. Yes, it was printed in 1997, but all you have to do is change a few of the words (I think they refer to Word Perfect, just change to Microsoft Office 2003). Fantastic Book!

5 out of 5 stars This book is an excellent tool to use to advance your career.......2001-07-09

This book is excellent! It has really showed me how to make my resume more marketable, and prepare me for a better career. I have passed this book on to my family, and co-workers.

      5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Resource.......2000-03-16

Ms. Lefkowitz has produced an outstanding guide that is tailored specifically to administrative people. Other resume books provide the basics, but the formulas and the cookie cutter molds just don't seem to lend themselves to admin careers. Her book is a godsend for professional secretaries. Each of the chapters goes through the steps for translating the myriad of everyday tasks into clear, concise, and impressive bullet items. Her section on writing the qualifications statement is particularly helpful. She breaks it down into parts and shows the reader how to tailor it to each job posting. The examples at the end provide different examples on how to word things as well as ideas for formating and layouts (something that is important for a secretary to demonstrate some talent at doing). Using her instructions and those examples, it's easy to put together a resume that gets results! I've had nothing but compliments (and interviews) after using this book.

5 out of 5 stars the best resume book ever!.......1999-05-14

the book was damn easy to use, and It helped me get the job I was looking for! Id recoment it to anyone who is seriously interested in upgrading their resume writting skills
