Author's Comment on Berman Review.......2007-01-25
Mr. Berman's review tells me that he did not read my book. Most would agree with me that he is doing a great diservice to contractors who could
benefit from reading it.

A Wonderfully Informative Read.......2006-11-19
Building a Successful Construction Company contains very valuable advice; advice that people pay consultants dearly for when they need it. The writing style is very direct and user friendly. The depth of knowledge and the sophisticated writing style make this book fun to read. Despite its size, the book reads like a crash course in economics, marketing, finance, accounting, and entrepreneurship. The author displays a brilliant command of these disciplines and more, in addition to her thorough knowledge of the construction industry. The book is very detailed for its size and includes a wealth of informational resources that should prove very useful for the busy CEO. What makes this book extremely useful is that it applies to any geographical area and to all types of construction.
This book should find its place on the SBA's list of reference books and be placed on the book shelf of every chamber of commerce and trade association in every major city. It should be required reading for anyone studying to obtain a contractor's license as well as for those who are already managing their construction businesses.

Required reading.......2006-10-13
If you are considering starting a construction business or trying to grow an existing contracting firm, this book offers hard won experience in a well written format. It is like having a conversation with a personal construction industry business coach.
The book lays out the numerous details you must be mindful and does not sugar coat the potential pitfalls you will probably come across. The appendices alone are a valuable compilation of resources that include a Strategic Business Plan Workbook, useful industry government website addresses, and sample forms and templates.
I previously worked with some of the top construction industry leaders in the New York City region developing courses for small contractors. I am confident that the instructors I retained from both the public and private sectors would be impressed with this comprehensive document. The book deserves to be incorporated into any construction and business management course curriculum directed to small contractors.

The most informative book I've found yet........2005-10-06
I've read MANY how to start a cleaning business books and this is the best I have ever read. He gives pointers about bidding jobs for residential AND commercial contracts.Tells you how to go about getting business, some of the ways will surprise you. This is just what I was looking for. Pair this with Mr Aslett's Professional Cleaners Personal Handbook and even an experienced cleaner will benefit.
Starting a Cleaning Business.......1998-05-05
Don Aslett covers many of the major points that anyone who wants to start a business should consider. He has obviously gained a thorough knowledge of the subject through many years of practical experience in the business. As a cleaning contractor who started in the same way as Don I disagree with some of his views regarding hiring and motivating staff although this may because of the different countries where we work (Reviewer resides in the UK). He advises buying products from local suppliers in order to recieve a good reliable service. This is always more expensive for the contractor and does not guarantee good service. His points regarding overspending on items such as vehicles etc is well founded and his advice is generally sound. It is an interesting read although to gain more knowledge on the subject an aspiring cleaner/entreprenuer will need to know much more about the subject before considering embarking on a cleaning career and setting themselves loose on an unwary public. He has covered the subject in other books he has written and this may be found there. All things considered his book is readable and quite informative and generally quite good value for your dollar.
Not easily understood........1997-04-28
While the book does give a lot of valuable info to one starting out in the service business, it is not explained in enough detail. It leavea me with a lot of questions that I still can't find answers for. It should be followed by a book that will provide the answers to the serious minded service person.

Customer Reviews:
This author seemed to put very little effort into this book........2006-05-08
I am extremely disappointed in this book. After all the hype (the author proclaimed he was very successful, building 60 homes a year at his peak), this book appears to be written by someone who has never set foot on a building site.
It is virtually all written in generalities, with very little useful or valid information pertaining to contracting. This book really lacks SPECIFICS!! A lot of what the author does is just write "fluff," or "filler." In other words, much of his writing is just wasted space.
I believe that the positive reviews on this book were either written by morons, people who think "fluff" is good writing, or most probably, friends of the author who are trying to increase sales of his book.
It's really a shame, because I have the feeling that the author really does know about the building business. Too bad that he didn't choose to impart any specific knowledge to the people who forked over $25-30 for his book.
The author should be ashamed of this piece of work. It's really a ripoff. If you are a budding young contractor like me,
DO NOT waste your money on this book! Or, your valuable time.
He knows a little about a lot.......2003-12-12
While I am only about 85% of the way through this book let me say that I have found some very informative material. I have also found some VERY VERY wrong information. As a financial advisor turned contractor I am currently in the "Planning for your future" chapter and have found some terrible advice. It leads me to believe that although he was a succesful builder and did well that he doesn't know when to shut-up about things he really has no idea about.
I have enjoyed the book so far but it really is outdated and needs to be revised or pulled off the shelf so that inexperienced builders do not use his "past there prime" ideas in todays market.
If you are in the market for industry books then you can do better. There are books out there that are much more current than this one. Buy a specialty book and stay away from the guys that think they know it all.
Beware.......2003-11-13
Book lacks detail, and content. Book is misleading and is simple over priced toilet paper
Watch Out!.......2003-05-16
If you are new to the building business - this is definitely NOT the book to buy or read. I found the book to be very general speaking on all 26 topics being discussed. E.g. topics on computers - why to use them or not - are completely outdated.
This book lacks a lot of detail. It scans over most items and I really find it difficult to highlight facts that I would re-read later. This book will NOT make me a successful Builder - just a frustrated reader.
Good Stuff.......2001-12-28
Good book. A solid value. This is a very versatile book, as it applies to all types of construction business. Its really about solid business practices(not strictly pertaining to building, although theres plenty about that in here). This book is very business oriented and covers quite a bit in the legal aspect as well. Good book with good templates. Finally i got some decent info on lein waivers. To those who arent computer savvy, chapter 17 is for you.

Book Description
How to reap the enormous benefits of this dynamic new practice
SUCCESSFUL PARTNERING
Fundamentals for Project Owners and Contractors
In the tightly budgeted and competitive business environment of the 1990s, firms involved in construction projects can no longer (if they ever could) afford the suspicions, squabbles, and even litigation that have afflicted far too many projects. This enlightening book shows project owners, construction professionals, and others how to implement the recently developed practice of partnering as a more efficient, cost-effective, and far less stressful way of planning, organizing, and completing construction projects. Adopted by such organizations as the Army Corps of Engineers, its growing number of converts have reported fewer delays and lawsuits and other benefits, including a more cooperative and focused work atmosphere. With this new book—the only one of its kind currently available—practicing professionals will gain a solid understanding of the fundamentals of partnering and how to apply them to their construction projects.
Successful Partnering
It is a sad fact that as many as 700f all construction projects will result in some kind of litigious action and this, in turn, will result in enormous losses of money, time, and energy for all parties involved. In the hope of avoiding this debilitating drain on resources, many construction-related firms have adopted the recently developed practice of partnering. In partnering, all participants work together and accept joint responsibility for the completion of a project. Successful Partnering shows you how to initiate and build partnering relationships in your projects, and how, with a united management agenda, a construction team can focus on problem solving instead of fault finding.
Written by two recognized authorities on partnering, this unique guide takes you through the process of partnering, giving you invaluable insights from the perspectives of principal participants. By examining the case studies and numerous examples that illuminate the text, you will learn from the inside what works and what doesn't, and how to maximize your chances of establishing a successful partnering relationship. Specifically, this book provides insights on such important issues as:
- Why partnering is becoming a rapidly growing practice in the construction industry and what the benefits are for owners, construction contractors, architects, engineers, and others
- How to lay the foundation for partnering: testing for good contracts, good teaming, and good partnering
- The fundamental principles and mechanics of partnering, including the roles of the facilitator and the trainer
- Legal aspects of partnering
- The personal and group dynamics of partnering and how they affect creative problem solving and efficiency
Successful Partnering is an indispensable guide to a practice that is revolutionizing the way construction projects are being organized and completed. Written for all those involved in the complex work of construction—engineering, design, and construction managers; as well as lawyers, accountants, and suppliers, Successful Partnering is a lucid introduction to an important new development in construction management.

Description:
Identifying the optimum mark-up for a project increases the chance of winning the tender. The aim of this study is to investigate the factors considered by more successful and profitable contractors in mark-up size decision. From the literature, 52 factors that may affect mark-up were identified. A postal survey was conducted to whether contractors felt that the factors are important in determining mark-ups. The questionnaire requested respondents to indicate on a five-point scale the importance of various factors. They were also asked the usual profitability level in their successful projects and their success rates in tendering. Data were collected via mailed questionnaire. Twenty-one of the 52 factors were found to be important. Of these, factors relating to client characteristics (payment record, size and type of client) are the most significant. Contractors who are profitable and successful would place more emphasis on factors that affect schedule-cost-quality of the project. It is recommended that contractors who are less profitable and successful take note of these findings.
