Customer Reviews:
Best book on business communication.......2006-10-24
This book covers it all -- speaking, writing, email, briefing and web pages. Best book I've seen on these subjects. Bailey walks the talk. His book is easy to read, and the principles are illustrated clearly. What I like best are the examples.
Almost perfect.......2000-03-13
Edward Bailey commands the field of "plain English" applied to business writing. This is a complete, modern--and highly readable--summary of everything you need to know about writing memo's letters and resumes and doing oral presentations. It lacks a section on e-mail. The resume and cover letter sections use examples which may not match for all industries, and the letter format (showing "Writer/typist") is outdated in the Internet Age.
The communication doctor.......1999-12-03
Want to improve your writing? Want to improve your presentation skills? There's not a better book on the shelves! A must if your serious about your career. In only hours, your writing will improve -- colleagues will notice.

How to Write and Give a Speech.......2001-03-29
The Washington Post praised this as a "how-to classic" and I would agree with them. It's well-organized and filled with top-quality professional advice. It's also very 'readable' - which sets it apart from so many public speaking texts.
I found this book saved me a lot of time and worry, both in preparing formal speeches and informal presentations. Most important, it will make you a much better, and more confident, speaker.

Good basics, but needs updating.......2000-07-20
This book does a good job covering the many basics of making an effective presentation, including dealing with anxiety, personal appearance, planning and preparation. However, it needs to be updated to reflect the many changes in presentation technology (and technology in general) since 1993 that are available to the presenter.
For example, to quote from page 55, "CD-ROM Players--These 'read only' players (you can't record onto them from your own computer, yet!) can hold a gigantic amount of information. Some disks contain an entire encyclopedia. These devices can store color photographs, video clips, sound clips, huge data bases and other types of information that require a lot of memory. There is new technology available that will allow you to take a photograph, have it transferred to a CD-ROM disk and then bring it up on your computer screen." What next, phones without wires? Overall a good book on the subject of preparing for and delivering presentations as long as you're not looking for any tips on PowerPoint or technology-based presentations.
Concise and to the point, good for a beginner.......1999-03-02
I would say if you never put a presentation together, or looking for few ideas in putting a presentation together, this book is for you. The material is concise and gives good backgound on how to put a professional presentation together. I recommend it to a beginning managers and executives that want to evalute their presentation mode.

DTW.......2006-11-22
The best how to book on the subject I could find. Gives some good examples of roasts. It also gives solid ideas to incorporate into your own style of roast. Very good for framework of your roast and some ideas for jokes and anectodes. Also get a Milton Burle book or the "one-liners" book to complement this one and you're set to roast away.
SAVE YOUR MONEY.......2006-03-11
The high-praise for this slim book astounds me. It is repetitious to the point of distraction. There are better books elsewhere, that can provide you with better instruction -- Milton Berle's Private Joke File, Volume One, for example.
Very Helpful.......2003-01-04
I'm so glad someone took the time to write a how to book on this type of public speaking. With the book's help I was able to write a roast that I gave at a party for a friend who recently finished graduate school. It was very well received, and I had people asking me to help them write roasts. Thank you Mr. Miller.
Helpful and fun.......2002-12-25
This is a terrific book that helps those who are nervous about making speeches and toasts. Useful for both business situations and social occasions. The book has great advice and lots of examples. It's about time someone wrote a book for those who want to partiicpate in toasts and roasts but never felt comfortable doing them.
Fiends, Colleagues and Relatives: Lend Me your Ears.......2002-11-30
This is the best book that I've seen for anyone who wants to add to the pleasantries of a retirement party, wedding reception or other festive event.
Book Description
Though written specifically for technical presenters who want to enhance their basic speaking skills, this is the ideal book for anyone who has to convey complex technical information in an accurate, logical, interesting, and effective manner.

BEST RESOURCE for advanced & thought-leader presenters.......2007-05-28
The downside of this book is that it has no visuals, no pictures, no fancy color printing inside, and it is printed in expensively; no bells & whistles - just meat & potatos.
Recently, wanting to move my presentation skills to the next level, I spent $1,500 on books & audio. Without a doubt THIS BOOK IS THE BEST resource for advanced presenters. Of all the trainings in my career I've had in presentaiton, negotiation, media & crisis communication, I recommend this as 'the golden little book' to connect with an audience.
I applied the ideas now 3 times to big presentations and each time with "knock-out" success & unsolicited feedback from the audience afterwards. Practice makes perfect !
Do as I do..........2007-01-09
An excellent introduction to public presentation. Clear, pithy, few wasted words -- it models what it preaches. Unlike many of its competitors on the presentation shelf, S.O.S. doesn't ramble on and on, like a speaker who just can't shut up. Instead, it gets in, gets out, and leaves the reader a better presenter.
Great PowerPoint Chapter!.......2005-11-22
In addition to the positives mentioned in the other reviews, I have to highlight a great chapter on the often misused PowerPoint ("PowerPoint Doesn't Bore Audiences, Lousy Speakers Do") By emphasizing the importance of a good presentation and clear, simple and direct PowerPoint slides, Wiskup shows how to get the most from this tool without getting bogged down by the its technicalities. As a former training director I've seen lots of bad PowerPoint and this book provides a simple antidote.
A must read before your next presentation!.......2005-11-06
I loved the book. I had to give my "State of the Foundation" speech recently at our Annual Dinner, and got great feedback. I credit a lot of that to what I have learned from this book - most importantly I included some stories and didn't spout off a lot of statistics.
A Must Read.......2005-11-01
As a successful business person - and one that really doesn't like to present to large audiences - I have read many books on how to develop a memorable presentation. Mark Wiskup's S.O.S. is the best by far. He clearly outlines unique steps to grab an audience - whether it be a one-on-one sales presentation or a PowerPoint presentation to a large audience. A must read if you want to clearly differentiate yourself from all the boring speakers out there.

Customer Reviews:
Persuasive advice for lawyers.......2003-04-02
In Legally Speaking, Mr. Dempsey has created an invaluable guide for lawyers, and I suspect non-lawyers, who need to make presentations to small or large groups. His observations about the art of persuasion are both amusing and insightful. As Dempsey makes clear, talking is not the same as presenting. His focus on "making your case" gets right to the heart of what lawyers do for their clients. Dempsey really wants you to win your audience over and tells you quite clearly how to achieve that goal. Dempsey's comprehensive approach (40 principles!), covers every aspect of lawyers' presentation skills, but still leaves you with one unanswered question: "Can you do a book for non-lawyers?"
A Must Have Book!.......2003-02-26
Where was this book when I was in law school? This is an exceptional overview of not only the tools but also the techniques attorneys so desperately need to communicate clearly. Dempsey not only tells you what you need to know to communicate concisely and with clarity (something far too few attorneys do) but he gives you practical advice you can immediately implement to enhance your speaking skills, regardless of the amount of speaking you do, or where you do it. The writing is engaging, entertaining and highly informative. There are hundreds of ideas and examples for every attorney. This should be required reading in for every law student and lawyer regardless of how often they speak-we need to do a better job and this book shows us how. This is the essential guide, written by an attorney for attorneys. Buy it now!
This book actually deserves 10 stars!.......2002-10-23
Legally Speaking is a book that is almost too good to be true. Its information for masterful presentations provides breadth, depth, and enormous practical application. What's more, it is easy to read. The book is an excellent resource for anyone who needs to be a more effective communicator. David Dempsey has done an excellent job of laying out his outline in the contents. It is very easy to quickly turn to the information that is most needed in a given moment.
Time after time, we hear popular voices, celebrity voices, and our own voices saying that speaking is an unresolved fear. David Dempsey provides such useful, detailed information and sincere encouragement through his anecdotes that readers will be looking forward to their next opportunity to speak. This book isn't an expense; its an invaluable investment.
The Only Presentation Skills Book You'll Ever Need.......2002-10-10
The only thing I don't like about "Legally Speaking: 40 Powerful Presentation Principles Lawyers Need to Know" is that I didn't write it. I count it among the top five reference books I own. Don't be fooled by the title: this book isn't just for lawyers - it's for anyone who wants to be a better presenter. It is tightly written, yet packed with helpful tips on everything from how to organize a speech, to how to master a Q&A session, to how to gesture with conviction, to how to use your voice and everything in between. Whether you're preparing your first speech or about to deliver the one that can change your life, this book will help ensure you do it right. The format is perfect for quick reference. Dempsey effectively uses bullets, short sentences, summaries and a killer index to help you find exactly what you need, especially if you're in a hurry. My copy is already dog-eared and I've been speaking professionally for years! As an added bonus, Dempsey is a terrific storyteller and isn't shy about exposing the mistakes he has made along the way to becoming a great speaker. I've had the opportunity to hear him speak, so I know he practices what he preaches. There's a lot to learn from this author!

Speakers Sourcebook II.......2003-08-08
If I were stuck on a desert island with one thousand sales people, this is the only book I would need. I have used this book so much that the cover is falling off. The book has a wide depth of topics that are easy to reference. The stories are sometimes profound and sometimes very funny. If you are a trainer or a speech writer, and you do not have a copy of this book, stop reading this and order it now. You will thank me later!
entertaining, informational, comprehensive, inspirational -.......1999-11-19
The Speaker's Sourcebook II remains a favorite source of reference, inspiration and information for me. The author certainly pours a lot of himself in the messages following the anecdotes and stories. In many ways this is a large Chicken Soup book with ideas for application and tons of great quotes.
Good, positive quotes with an added bonus -- anecdotes!.......1999-03-05
I use this book constantly for speech writing, letters, invitations, etc. The book is indexed well and contains many anecdotes and quotes from business people. Great for the work environment. Buy it!

Book Description
We all think of our appearance as our physical looks, mannerisms or dress. And these are certainly important in a job interview, for success in a sales call, for job promotion or social acceptance. But a good appearance also includes how we speak. And our "teacher" (parents, school teachers, friends) may not be very well trained. So we talk as we hear others around us. That leads to the obvious errors (I ain't; he don't; he invited Joe and I; like I say; there's two ways out; I could care less; everyone take their notebook-and many more). This book points out about 500 helpful and amusing tips on talking correctly in ordinary conversation. There are examples given so that the reader can recognize the error and how it should be spoken to be correct. This is not a grammar book. It goes right to the heart of errors in daily routine conversation, points out why they are errors and explains what the correct word or phrase should be. The book also contains sections on pronunciation, foreign words common in English, and a self-administered quiz to help readers realize how frequently errors occur in ordinary conversation.

A Quick-Learn Guide to Avoiding the Pitfalls in English.......2002-11-16
..... From at least the time of Shakespeare, pundits have been decrying the lack of class. Noel Coward did it with such wit that it became an amusing pastime. Lerner and Loewe distilled the concept into speech-both its sound and patterns-in the popular "My Fair Lady." And now we have James A. Fisher who makes the same point in an effort to improve matters if we will but cooperate.
Fisher is determined that we should speak impeccable English for success's sake. In "Talking Correctly for Success," he aims to teach us how to avoid the most heinous pitfalls of our language in a very funny book. Thus, he makes it easy to order at a French restaurant without sounding as if we grew up learning to read phonetically and believing the rest of the world did, too. He decries "Slurvian," our tendency to say "Djoo Eet?" for "Did you eat?" He even tackles my personal ear-irritant, the incorrect usage of "lie" and "lay." And he does it in a practical and memorable way.
This little paperback was originally copyrighted in 1996. It has since gone into its 2nd edition. For very good reason. Even those of us who pride ourselves on our ability to use the English language can learn something from it. It's just as important that if we choose to do it, refining our command of the English language with "Talking Correctly" will be a really fun pursuit. Wit, after all, did not die with Shakespeare or Coward or even with Professor Higgins.
