Book Description
Wastewater Engineering: Treatment and Reuse, 4/e is a thorough update of McGraw-Hill's authoritative book on wastewater treatment. No environmental engineering professional or civil or and environmental engineering major should be without a copy of this book- tt describes the technological and regulatory changes that have occurred over the last ten years in this discipline, including: improved techniques for the characterization of wastewaters; improved fundamental understanding of many of the existing unit operations and processes used for wastewater treatment, especially those processes used for the biological removal of nutrients; greater implementation of several newer treatment technologies (e.g., UV disinfection, membrane filtration, and heat drying); greater concern for the long term health and environmental impacts of wastewater constituents; greater emphasis on advanced wastewater treatment and risk assessment for water reuse applications; changes in regulations and the development of new technologies for wastewater disinfection; and new regulations governing the treatment, reuse, and disposal of sludge (biosolids). Greater concern for infrastructure renewal including upgrading the design and performance of wastewater treatment plants.
This revision contains a strong focus on advanced wastewater treatment technologies and stresses the reuse aspects of wastewater and biosolids.

Wish there was something better out there........2007-03-06
Although this book is one of the largest information sources for WWTP design, it is also poorly formatted and illogical in presentation of material. The reason is because it is a compilation of many individuals so there is much redundancy, some conflicting information and incoherency in the overall text. If you are looking to LEARN how to design a WWTP you will need a good aid in addition to this text. Otherwise, it is fine if you know what you are looking for.
Good Catalog.......2007-01-13
I bought this huge volume so I could develop some puzzles in our magazine. Chemical engineers need to expand into this area largely inhabited by misplaced civil engineers. As water shortages become more prevalent, continuous recycling of water will become a necessity in chemical plants. Then, there is the cost of process chemicals needed to treat water. Many of these are hazardous wastes. You will need to know what your options are for conditioning these waters.
The author covers every form of wastewater treatment in significant detail for its genre (handbooks). I especially liked the block diagrams showing process steps. As with most handbooks, more examples would improve its use. However, with that aside, it shares a space on my shelf.
If this review helped, add your vote.
Packed with Information, Riddled with Typos and Omissions.......2005-06-09
I have been using this text in a wastewater engineering course. It covers the different aspects of wastewater engineering well, providing in depth treatments of each. However, the great size of this book (over 1800 pages) may also be its weakness, making it an unmanageable project for the editors.
In one month of usage, I have found serious gaps in the problems. Many cross-references are incorrect, and there are some problems which omit values required for solution.
In short, this is a good source of information. With closer editing, it could be better.
Bible of Wastewater Engineering.......2005-03-11
This is the bible of Wastewater Engineering. I'm currently a student studying Civil/Environmental Engineering and every professor I've talked to in my department has recommended this book for any type of Wastewater Treatment Plant design. If this book doesn't have the information you want (unlikely), the WEF MOP might.
MUST HAVE FOR ALL SANITARY ENGINEERS.......2004-12-08
I can't stress enough the value in this text. Like my title states this is a must have for all sanitary engineers. The book covers everything you must know concerning wastewater treatment written by professionals working in the field. I would hope some day that they publish a book on pump stations and sanitary sewer design as well. I think that they would also be on the top of the list for these areas as well.

Excellent book for the project engineer! Hard to enhance.......2007-07-24
One of the most comprehensive books in the area I have ever seen. I like its approach with guidelines of how to use it depending on the type of user.
It combines advices on mechanical, civil and electrical aspects obtained on years of experience of the authors (more than 100 specialist from the academy and industry).
A huge effort fron the editors. If you like the subject and want one bible-like book, this is it!
Great Reference.......2007-01-15
A great reference book that deals with all design aspects related to pumping stations. Furthermore, there is extensive information concerning procurement and commercial issues. The book is clear even when it goes into detailed information and should be considered as a must have for every engineer working in this field.
Pumping Station Review By Straeffer Pump.......2007-01-03
The book is informational and a great asset in our business. It has become an essential tool used daily to help us in our day to day functions in the office.
This was a difficult book to find and we were glad Amazon.com could fullfill our needs.
Fully covering.......2004-05-28
The Sanks' Pumping Station design is a mile stone in its field.
Having every aspect covered, Sanks has not only designed his book in a way that is easily readable for the field related people but also made it a basic reference for the people on the management side of it.
Owning such a book is a knowldge in itself !!!!
Excellent!.......2000-12-01
One of the very best engineering texts that I have run across in my career. Exceptionally clear, comprehensive, and practical.

Book Description
This best selling book, Applied Hydrogeology gives readers a balanced examination of all facets of hydrogeology. It text stresses the application of mathematics to problem solving rather than derivation of theory. It provides a balance between physical and chemical hydrogeology. Numerous case studies cultivate reader understanding of the occurrence and movement of ground water in a variety of geologic settings.
This valuable reference includes five new case histories: The Dakota Aquifer, Fractures Sedimentary Rocks—Newark basin, Faults as Aquifer Boundaries, Desert Hydrology—Azraq basin, Jordan. Uses the Internet to obtain hydrogeologic data and information. Includes well-developed case studies in most of the chapters. Contains tables covering various functions, unit conversions, and additional data for solving well hydraulics, water chemistry, and contaminant transport problems.
For readers interested in advanced hydrology, groundwater hydrology, hydrogeology, and civil engineering.
Customer Reviews:
Typical Engineering Textbook.......2006-11-06
This book is written much like your typical engineering textbook, which means it will probably stress out non-engineers. The organization of the book is unintuitive, especially for an undergraduate, which makes doing homework with it unecessarily time consuming. In addition, the index is very limited. I would have prefered an alternative for my undergrad Hydro class.
thorough, well-defined, fluent.......2005-01-14
I was very happy to use this text throughout my course on Hydrogeology. The verbage was succinct, the problems were applicable and well-complimented with the website for explanations, and the chapter reviews were impendious. At the end of each chapter, Fetter cocnluded with a detail of symbols; which I found to be a nice touch. Often an author uses a symbol once and expects the reader to always retain its significance, which is an unreal circumstance. The case studies were necessary to hammer home a concept! They were well-written and facilitated the goal of explaining a hydrogeological problem, and a solution.
The typographical errors of the first edition were corrected in this edition.
I recommend this text to all aspiring earth scientists.
Relieved to find........2004-01-28
I found this book the easiest to read, compaired to a few other groundwater textbooks out there. It concentrates on the practical applications as opposed to formula derivations.
Did anyone proof read this text before it went to print?.......2001-06-29
I have the 3rd edition which I purchased in 1995 and although I enjoy the subject matter and use this book as a reference, I am still finding errors and making corrections to the textbook (typos in both text and problem sets). Someone should have paid closer attention to detail prior to submission to the publisher. I was going to get the 4th addition to add to my personal library, hoping there would be no errors. However, after a few minutes of research on the internet I found out that there are still errors in the 4th addition. However, the author does have a webpage with corrections posted. I wouldn't recommend this text to anyone unless they have time and are willing to go through the text to make the corrections. There are other texts in print covering the same subject matter with fewer or no errors.
Well Written, Thoroughly Explain Text.......2001-05-11
As a student I was relieved to read ideas that were explained clearly, especially in the water chemistry chapter. I also appreciated how well the formulas were presented. The problems at the end of the chapter were a great way to study for exams.
Book Description
This book details the technologies used in water and wastewater management today, including standard practice and state of the art. Its main focus is on the mechanics of processes to treat water or wastewater.
Customer Reviews:
Good organization, poor mathematics.......1999-08-02
This book is better organized than most other texts in this field. The selection of topics is generally good. Coverage of many topics is quite satisfactory. Ion exchange and membrane processes, however, are not explained well.
While descriptive subjects (e.g.microbiology, diseases, etc) and those subjects that do not require advanced mathematics are well explained, there are some serious blunders in the coverage of more mathematical topics.
For example, the author employs mathematical language and notation in trying to "prove" or "derive" certain equations in Chapter 10 (pp. 255 to 261). The mathematics used, however, is sloppy and therefore the presentation is more confusing than convincing. The analysis covering Equations 10.37 to 10.40 shows that the author does not have an understanding of the substantial (material) derivative of fluid mechanics and transport phenomona.
There are some serious mistakes in the treatment of fixed bed adsorber systems (pp.490-498). For example, equations 15.51 and 15.65 are incorrect. There is also a mistake in Equation 15.57. There are other more fundamental mistakes. The author seems confused here. I advise readers to consult Weber or Benefield et al. to study this subject.
Despite the above criticism, this book's treatment of many topics is more comprehensive and satisfactory than that of many a textbook in this field. It is a valuable and wellcome addition to the textbook literature. In preparing the second edition, however, the author should have the chapter on mass balances and reaction kinetics completely rewritten (possibly by someone from the chemical engineering faculty).

Very practical book of reference and good basic theory.......1998-08-17
A very easy to consult reference book. In most cases in water and wastewater engineering, the book will help you to give you the right direction in solving an engineering problem. As a basic book very good in use.
Easy to understand without neglecting theory.......1998-04-09
Droste provides a very good overview with good description of the theoretical background. I find this book most helpful for more unusual problems in (water and) wastewater treatment. Very good value: covers almost everything you need to know in one book.

Customer Reviews:
Geek Pool Book.......2007-09-09
We bought a house with an inground pool 5 years ago. A bit of a surprise really. We had ZERO experience with pools, and knew only by rumor that we were buying something that required a LOT of care and maintenance. I hunted through bookstores for a guide I could learn from. I am a technical writer by profession, so I know a thing or two about how to present complex ideas to the innocent. Browsing through this volume I was impressed with the author's skill at getting ideas across (well structure informattion - here's the idea, heres' the basics, here's the gory details). I bought it on the strength of his organization and writing, not on the content (about which I knew zilch).
It is still in regular use 5 years later. YES, it is technical. YES, it sometimes provides way too much information for the novice. But if you have a brain and you can handle some complexity, this book is BRILLIANT. I knew nothing, and in very short order I learned what I needed for basic care. This book is a bible for pool maintenance. Over the years I've learned (from experience guided by this book) how to strip a DE filter, how to repair my Polaris pool robot, and more about water chemistry than I ever thought possible. This past summer ('07) it guided us through a plaster refinishing (pool is ~30 years old) and taught me how to restart the pool.
It IS written by a pool professional, FOR pool professionals, and even has advice on how to run a pool maintenance business (which is of zero interest to me). But if you can learn from a pro talking to other pros, this book is it.
The "Haynes" manual for pools.......2006-11-10
This book is to swimming pools what the "Haynes" car maintenance manuals are to your car. It contains all the information required to maintain your pool, even though probably someone else is going to do it for you. If you own a pool, it is worth reading the book to understand what the service technician should and shouldn't be doing, and when the pool is in need of help. It can also help you save some money by doing the work yourself. The book is entirely about maintaining a pool, not owning one. It is written in a friendly, readable style, and you can simply keep it as a reference manual to know what to do when things go wrong. If you are considering installing a pool or spa, this book will show you what you are letting yourself in for. If there is one omission in the text it is that the author ignores electric pool cleaning robots, though they are probably the most effective way of keeping the pool clean.
Save your Money.......2006-04-24
This book was a wasste of time and money. The book focuses more on being a pool professional then the actual "how-to" a pool owner needs to work on their pool. It has more information on changing a light fixtures and on bilking wealthy Malibu folks out of cash then actual useful information.
After reading this (useless!) book I went to my local library and reearched several books on the subject, there is a title called "What color is your pool?" That has lots of information for the first time pool owner. There may be other more technical guides our there, but this book has few drawings and illustrations, poor writing, and ultimately is lacking in adequate information.
Trust me...SAVE YOUR MONEY!
Helpful Tool.......2005-08-26
This book is a helpful tool for any pool owner or someone interested in having a pool.
NOT the best book to buy........2005-05-15
This is my first Amazon review, but I feel compelled to share this experience with others.
This book as said to be for the professional and the novice. It was said to contain all the information one could possibly need. It was suggested that you could take what you want from the weighty tome, and leave the rest. In reality the book is clearly NOT written for a new pool owner. In fact, its not written for an experience pool owner. The book was written for a pool repairman. Moreover, it does not contain the practicle information a pool professoinal would require to steer clients toward pool products.
Which cleaner should you get- Vacume or pressure driven? No answer here. What about a heating- Solar, oil, gas? No advice, no direction....
In fact, the book reads more like the diary of a pool man. About how one manufacurer was driven out of business by refusing to compromise quality, or how he cared for the pool of come Malibu celebrity.
Having recently purchased a home with an in-ground pool, I have read three books so far, and gotten quite and education. This book however failed in almost every regard. Finnally, the book deliniates ways of making money of customers as a pool professional. Information I simply have no use for.
Lastly, it bears mentioning that there is a quote on the book jacket from another Amazon reviewer "If you want to buy one book on swimming pools this is it!" Why not a quote from a noted pool authority or publication? Why quote some anonymous amzazon.com user like you or me? Most likely because there were no favorable reviews from newspapers or magazines.
This book was more then a waste of 30 dollars. It was also a waste of time. Unless you need to know how to change things like light fixtures in to pool. The book is not awful, so I gave it 2 stars, but I urge you to look elsewhere.

Great Guide.......2005-05-12
I studied a structural engineering in college & have no background in hydraulics, but somehow ended up in site-planning. My mentor left my firm & I was left on my own to struggle through drainage designs. This book has been a great complement to the guidelines & regulations I have, and has helped understand the theory behind all the computer based calculations I run.

Book Description
The contamination of soils and groundwater by petroleum is a growing problem, not only for the oil-producing countries. This book describes the possible approaches for preventing such pollution or, if it occurs, for its reclamation. It combines the knowledge and experience of scientists - providing scientific methods - on the one hand, and engineers - to show what is feasible taking costs into account - on the other. For the various approaches and processes, the experimental analysis, computer model development, and field implementation are discussed. Also considered is the migration of petroleum in soils, and its interaction with the soil and with bacteria.
