I borrowed this from the library. Just listening to it gave me goosebumps (and not the good kinds that the music instructors say they get when listening to good music). I was dying even before the first song ended. The only decent song in here was "Already Taken." I don't recommend anyone to get this. I finally found the worst music in the world. The exercises are pretty useful, just DON'T LISTEN TO THE CD! It's for your own good.

Music as always is a very personal experience. Some songs in Vocab Rock! were better than others. The song "Already Taken" could stand alone as a hit. If you like Hip-Hop, you may like the songs in Flocabulary better. But the real point of these works is repetition of advance vocabulary in context. Both works have a plethora of words. Get them both and get a break from flash cards.

Good vocab review for intermediate learners.......2007-05-10
This is a nice tool for beginners and intermediate level learners of MSA, but if you've been studying for a while you will find this a bit frustrating. The 4000 words utilized are good, but they won't take you to the next level. The lists are good, but it would be nice to be able to make your own. A section of Arabic proverbs would be very useful as well, as knowing them makes a real difference when dealing with native speakers. I would pay $25 for this, but no more.

Learning arabic on your own is a challenge. I chose to supplement the Kitaab fi tacallum al-arabiya series with MSA Vocab Clinic to get up to speed a little faster. It gives good pronounciation help, and the word lists makes bus rides a lot more fun...
Excellent software, but NOT an audio CD.......2006-08-31
Amazon needs to fix its info for this product - it's not an audio CD. It's a great package of software that has helped me bulk up my vocabulary and get a better pronuncation in modern standard arabic. I learned arabic grammar a while back, but found that its hard to communicate without a growing base of vocabulary to use. THis program is helping me do that. Love the clear audio recordings!
A MUST-HAVE FOR ARABIC LEARNERS.......2006-06-13
I have been studying Arabic here in Cairo for 3 years now and this software has been a tremendous help. Whenever I need to know the correct pronunciation of a word, I can simply click on it and hear an Egyptian say the word as many times as needed. It even lets me compare the way I say the word to the native speaker's pronunciation. This is an audio-dictionary for your computer, which is a must-have when learning a new language! There are several other functions that have been very useful as well - such as the study sheets, the grammar guide, the quiz tool, etc. If you are studying Modern Standard Arabic ("Fusha"), I know you will benefit from this software. There is another good MSA one called "Modern Standard Arabic Verb Clinic", by the same company, but I'm not sure is Amazon sells it. (There is also another one called "Egyptian Arabic Vocab Clinic" if you need to learn the spoken Arabic of Egypt.) - Richard (Julie's husband)

Tech support like that is not worth a hill of beans. If Verb Clinic will not install I am sure this product will not install so would not recommend this product as they are using their customers as beta-Testers.

This was the third product I bought from AUC Press. Learning arabic on your own is a daunting task, but the help from the AUC MSA Vocab Clinic and Verb Clinic was immense, so when I needed to "get colloquial" it was natural to try Egyptian Arabic Vocab Clinic.
In short: "It's good!".

I have heard from a person I know inside the company that produced this that version 3.0 will be Mac OS X compatible, as well as Windows.
This is the best software I have used for Egyptian Arabic - it's not as big as some of the others, but it is easy to use and really works my pronunciation and vocab. It gives all kinds of options for building your own lists of words, and the audio recordings are nice and clear.

I have lived in Cairo for 3 years now and my husband and I have both used this software extensively. Where most language learning books simply transliterate words phonetically, this software actually lets you HEAR the words spoken by an Egyptian as you see them on the screen (written in Arabic, in English transliteration, and the English equivalent). The words are categorized and you can listen to each word as many times as you like. It even has a function where you can record yourself saying the word and compare it to the Egyptian's voice (it shows the wavelength pattern of the words, too). As a housewife, I have appreciated the ability to print out vocab sheets as needed for study. My husband used this software and the others (there are some for Modern Standard Arabic, too) almost daily in his first years of intensive study. We HIGHLY recommend this for people of all levels who want to learn Egyptian Arabic.

Based on other reviews, I was expecting something, well, funny. They were not so much jokes as they were a very poor attempt at Monty Python genre skits. However, the ultimate goal was met since they were successful at improving my vocabulary.

I have to admit, I am not a candidate to be coaxed to learn vocabulary. As a life-long wordaholic, I used to read dictionaries for fun and I have to remind myself NOT to use certain words "just" because I happen to like them.
But suppose you are not of the word-collecting sort and you want to pick up a more extensive vocabulary. "Comic Vocab" is a pure pleasure. You learn to make stories with words, rhymes and other learning aids that help your not-word-oriented mind to retain this new knowledge. And you get to roar with laughter.
This is a great help and maybe a kind of reward to warm up a student studying for SAT's or other entrance exams who is hopeless with vocabulary but needs to enhance their word treasury. It is also great fun for older home schoolers. And it even is good for seniors who do crosswords or other puzzles to keep the mind sharp. Totally a joy, highly recommended.

I must say that I agree with all the points, pros and cons, that the first reviewer makes. For me personally this CD marked a breakthrough in what had been a long and frustrating search for a vocabulary system that actually works long term. The CD was easier to listen to than some of my music (no making fun please), and I now know the words inside and out. I can't wait until volume II comes out.
I wish I had this when prepping for the SAT's. Mom's, get it for your kids they'll thank you.
Clever and, dare I say, didactic! Not a prodigal purchase. .......2006-12-22
So, I've wanted to improve my vocabuary for a long time. I've bought the "expand your vocabulary" books, and they're all sitting in a box under my closet, providing endless enjoyment for my cat but, alas, no benefit to me (or my verbiage). Why, you might ask? Because too many of these approaches are either boring ("Word Smart" for the GRE"), involve too many words for me to remember at a time ("Tooth an Nail" for the SAT, a rather novel approach to the problem of vocabulary...literally), or are simply irrelevant, causing them to leave no permanent imprint on my brain.
Enter "Comic Vocab" - finally, a vocabulary strategy that is actually relevant enough to deliver results! I would strongly recommend this to anyone who's interested in improving his/her vocabulary. Before I prattle on further, here's a list of pros and cons to the CD:
PROS:
1) It fulfills it's promist to entertain you; I definitely laughed out loud (and scared my coworkers).
2) The strategy rests not only upon creating funny stories relating to vocab words but also upon using rhyming schemes, which make the jokes that much more memorable. For example, for the word "moxie," the comic tells a joke about a girl named "Roxy" who is "foxy." This double pronged approach makes it more likely you'll retain the meaning of the words.
3) Along the same lines, the strategy is varied. Some jokes rely on rhyming schemes, while others are said in a memorabe tone of voice (such as that of a small child or of a commercial). Because of this, i'm not only prevented from being bored but i'm more likely to remember the words.
4) As mentioned before: cool extras on website!
5) The words are grouped together in an entertaining, memorable way (my personal favorite: "quick, call the fasion police!").
6) A word on this strategy in general: I find it preferable to books because it alows you to learn words while muti-tasking! I listened to this CD a couple different ways - first while I was editing digital pictures at work, second when I was cleaning my kitchen, and third while in the shower. I could never do that while studying from a book.
CONS:
1) If you are listening to this on a CD player, it's hard to skip around if you hear a word you already know since the tracks each have 5 words that are played in sequence.
2) Comedy is subjective; understandably, I found a few of the jokes/voices grating.
3) There aren't as many words/definitions as you'd find in a big book (but i think the CD makes up for it in that you are actually going to remember these words).
In general, Thirsty Brain LLC and "Comic Vocab" succeed due to the relevancy and memorable nature of their strategy. I'm looking forward to the next CD!

I have tried many methods in learningn new words and memorizing them, but most of them were useless or unsustainable. This book not only provided me an effective way to learn new words, but also revived my interest of learning new words. The words in the book are useful. It would be helpful to those who might be writing the SAT or are just beginning their test preparation with very limited vocabulary. I highly recommend it.

I think this book is a great way to learn vocabulary. I have used other vocabulary boosters and I find Vocab Vitamins to be the most effective. Colin O'Malley and Julie Karasik have put together a fun book, the"Vocab-Vitamin Vocabulary Booster". I think it would make a nice gift for just about anyone! The book focuses on vocablulary that is relevant and useful, and the presentation is logical and understandable. I like the idea of receiving a thoughtful "word a day" email in the "IN" box of my email program. Highly Reccommended!

My wife and I have been getting this book for friends and family as gifts ever since we read it. We are both attorneys and know the value of language. I think this book is good for children and adults. Each chapter is cleverly titled and has funny, unique, and apropos illustrations. Unlike other vocabulary study programs I have used, I actually remembered the words and definitions from this book. The words are great when you use them, because they fit the situation well and you don't feel or appear pretentious. This is a great investment for kids and adults, and fun to read.

Interesting and fun.......2007-01-06
I am a special education teacher who has used this series when I taught in a high school English class as well as currently in an elementary classroom. My students like the stories. They especially like the fact that each section is small enough that it is not overwhelming to them. I find that it works great in not only improving their vocabulary skills but also their reading and writing skills. I recommend this series to anyone looking for an good simple vocabulary program.
