Practical, Easy to Read and Apply to Real Life.......2007-05-29
Great for People wanting an Introduction on EQ-i.......2003-12-18
Although I have some backgrounds on this subject, I still find this book encouraging, and it's good to refer back to once in a while.
I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to better their EQ-i or just curious.
Pleasantly Surprised By Contents.......2001-01-26
The book was very easy to get into. The writing is engaging. It starts with a brief history and definition of emotional intelligence (something Goleman avoids in his first book on the subject). It focuses on Reuven BarOn's definition but also includes Peter Salovey and John Mayer's definition - the originators of the concept.
The book, to my pleasant surprise, does not focus on the test (Emotional Quotient Inventory -EQ-i), but on how to gauge yourself (using exercises provided in the book) and work on improving yourself in the 15 specific areas of emotional intelligence. For the most part the exercises are taken from well-validated methods of cognitive-behavior therapy. As a psychologist I have no problem recommending this book to clients. In fact, there is more data behind this approach than what is proposed in many of the "best-selling" books out there. (For the academically oriented professional, please read the EQ-i test manual.)
Most interesting to me were some of the studies in the last chapter. It is very unusual for self-help books, and books on emotional intelligence to include original research on the importance of the concept. This makes the book great for those people you know who doubt the importance of E.I. To see how E.I. has made a difference to the U.S. Air Force, and companies like American Express and the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce is impressive.
I've actually reviewed the research on the EQ-i, the test that much of the research is based on. The normative group is bigger and better than many tests in the marketplace: almost 42,000 people in 36 countries. There are also some good scientific publications on it. While there is no "perfect" test of E.I., I haven't found anything that even comes close to this one. In fact, I've come across many tests being used by companies that don't even come close to having the research that this one has. But the book is not about the test. You can't even get the test unless you are a psychologist or qualified management consultant or vocational counsellor.
Was the book an advertisement? Not really. The examples, which are very realistic, cover work and home situations.
Rated #3 Best Business Book of The Year.......2001-01-24
I was not disappointed. I found it easy to read and quick to get into. The book gives a great overview of emotional intelligence - I now have a better understanding of what it really is. A few different definitions are given, but the focus is on Bar-On's theory.
While the book's research data, presented at the beginning and end, is based on Bar-On's test, it is not the focus of the book. The bulk of the book deals with each of the 15 areas of emotional intelligence - how you can gauge yourself, and how you can improve.
The examples are very good. After I finished the book, my 12-year-old son picked it up. He started to flip through it and ended up reading it - and he doesn't get through too many books.
I've recommended it to a few people at work and they weren't dissapointed.
Just an "Infomercial".......2001-01-05
I am a practicing Industrial/Organizational Psychologist who would love to have a genuine test of emotional intelligence; but, in my opinion, Bar-On's EQ-i test fails to measure up to basic professional standards of validity.
In a nut shell, it is under researched and over hyped. At this point in it's development, the test is definitely not something I would dare use for real world personnel decisions.

The Hypomanic Edge: The Link Between (A Little) Craziness and (A Lot of) Success in America
John D. Gartner Manufacturer: Simon & Schuster ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 0743243447 |
Book Description
Why is America so rich and powerful? The answer lies in our genes, according to psychologist John Gartner.
Hypomania, a genetically based mild form of mania, endows many of us with unusual energy, creativity, enthusiasm, and a propensity for taking risks. America has an extraordinarily high number of hypomanics -- grandiose types who leap on every wacky idea that occurs to them, utterly convinced it will change the world. Market bubbles and ill-considered messianic crusades can be the downside. But there is an enormous upside in terms of spectacular entrepreneurial zeal, drive for innovation, and material success. Americans may have a lot of crazy ideas, but some of them lead to brilliant inventions.
Why is America so hypomanic? It is populated primarily by immigrants. This self-selection process is the boldest natural experiment ever conducted. Those who had the will, optimism, and daring to take the leap into the unknown have passed those traits on to their descendants.
Bringing his audacious and persuasive thesis to life, Gartner offers case histories of some famous Americans who represent this phenomenon of hypomania. These are the real stories you never learned in school about some of those men who made America: Columbus, who discovered the continent, thought he was the messiah. John Winthrop, who settled and defined it, believed Americans were God's new chosen people. Alexander Hamilton, the indispensable founder who envisioned America's economic future, self-destructed because of pride and impulsive behavior. Andrew Carnegie, who began America's industrial revolution, was sure that he was destined personally to speed up human evolution and bring world peace. The Mayer and Selznick families helped create the peculiarly American art form of the Hollywood film, but familial bipolar disorders led to the fall of their empires. Craig Venter decoded the human genome, yet his arrogance made him despised by most of his scientific colleagues, even as he spurred them on to make great discoveries.
While these men are extraordinary examples, Gartner argues that many Americans have inherited the genes that have made them the most successful citizens in the world.

Disappointed.......2007-03-20
Outstanding insights from a former top assistant!.......2004-07-01
I think it's insane that reviewers are commenting on publisher's type-o's instead of commenting on how significant this book really is. Obviously, Ms. Duncan proofed her own book and after meeting Ms. Duncan at an event, I mentioned the reviews about the errors in the book. Ms. Duncan and her staff has tried desperately for years to demand that the book be reprinted. Some things unfortunately are out of one's hands, and I recognize this after years of being a journalist. Look at the NY Times! And every other book on your shelf! They all have errors!
Ms. Duncan has been instrumental in the salary increases, and gaining recognition for this truly unique role! I recommend this book to anyone in the role or considering it!
Interesting Read.......2000-07-19
As with the other reviewer I was extremely disappointed in the skills test in the back of the book. Missing questions, answers to questions that weren't printed.
I wonder if Ms. Duncan has read her own book? Did she review the skills test information in the back before it was published? If the fault lies with the publisher, I hope she got her money back. I also hope she'll do a re-print with the skill test corrected because I found it very helpful in identifying weak areas in my own skill set.
I've been an Executive Secretary/Assistant for the past ten years. Often a good assistant is taken for granted. I appreciated Ms. Duncan's affirmation that my job is more than a job, it's a career and that not just anyone can be a good assistant.
If you can get past all the problems with the skill test in the back of the book, I think you'll find the content extremely interesting, insightful, and motivating.
Talk About Ironic!.......2000-05-11
OK, can anyone find a proofreader at McGraw Hill to catch these types of errors? How can anyone take this book seriously? The other person who reviewed this book obviously did not read the whole thing. What a disappointment! I do recommend another book that I read. It's called The Valuable Office Professional by Michelle Burke. She is right on the money. There are some more in-depth self-evaluation tests, which go much further than vocabulary and grammar skills. I also got some information about her consulting service, which I am trying to convince management our company needs. That's my summary of this book. Good luck with your administrative careers no matter who you are or where you live!
Ms. Duncan has written a mentoring masterpiece!.......1999-02-06
Ms. Duncan doesn't just advise you to develop a proactive rather than a reactive approach to your administrative career, she guides you to discovering both what you want out of life and what your career can provide. She covers all the important bases for surviving in today's fast-paced world: learning to adapt to change (technical and cultural); mastering the fundamentals of communicating what you really mean; tapping into your management and leadership potential; handling both yourself and others in conflict situations; promoting yourself, your boss, and your company; and regaining your spiritual "center". Most importantly, however, Ms. Duncan asks wether or not you are cut out to be an executive assistant. Life is too short to just have a job; whatever it may be, find a career that works for you, challenges you, and fits your personality.
Packed with objective insights, advice, and enjoyable witticisms, "The New Executive Assistant" delivers. I found in this one book what countless seminars and 50-minute training series have not been able to provide; I found truely usable, relevant insights and information. Ms. Duncan has created a mentoring master piece for executive assistants (and anyone who wants to understand them)!

Forbes To The Limits: Pushing Yourself to the Edge In Adventure and in Business
James M. Clash , and James Clash Manufacturer: Wiley ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0471210935 |
Book Description
Following modern executives as they push themselves to the limits in life and in businessIn To the Limits, adventure writer Jim Clash examines the phenomenon of corporate leaders and millionaires who test their limits through high-end, risky adventure-and links the life and business lessons they have learned along the way. Based on his popular column in Forbes, Clash details his own exotic adventures and includes anecdotes from high-profile, daredevil executives who share his passion for adventure-from flying to the edge of space 84,000 feet up (Dennis Tito, Chief Executive of Wilshire Associates), to climbing 20,000-foot mountain peaks (Timothy Forbes, Chief Operating Officer of Forbes, Inc.), to racing open-wheel cars (Mark Patterson, Vice Chairman of Credit Suisse First Boston), to swimming at the North Pole (Geoffrey Kent, Chief Executive of Abercrombie & Kent). Clash's dramatic narrative also explores the powerful connection between extreme success in business and in life, and covers topics such as risk-taking, testing personal limits, and dealing with decision-making responsibilities.
James M. Clash (New York, NY) covers mutual funds for Forbes magazine and writes a popular column called "The Adventurer" for Forbes Global. An avid wilderness enthusiast, he is a Fellow in the Explorers Club who has undertaken a number of unforgettable challenges-he has climbed the Matterhorn, ridden in a MiG jet fighter at two-and-a-half-times the speed of sound, driven Indy cars at upwards of 180 mph, climbed virgin mountains in Antarctica, and has visited the North Pole twice. Clash has also interviewed legendary adventurers such as Buzz Aldrin, Sir Roger Bannister, Sir Edmund Hillary, and four-time Indy 500 winner Rick Mears-all of whom are included in this book.
Customer Reviews:
Limitless Appeal.......2004-06-29
A terrific read and one heck of a ride!!!!!.......2004-01-19
The Best Book I Have Read in a Long Time... A+++++++.......2003-12-24
Fortunately, Jim Clash writes about his own life with the skill of a novelist. You are traveling 208 miles an hour vibrating under his helmet in a Lambourgini. You are bracing yourself against the rocky summit of Everest as the wind tries to pull you to your death.
I feel as if I've been on a hundred exotic journey's in the past few hours. Jim and I have traveled to the North Pole, the South Pole, space, the desert, the mountains, and the depths of the sea. And he really did all these things-an incredible human being who clearly understands the definition of `living'.
Jim Clash knows that businessmen who approach their own field like it is the adventure of a lifetime are those leaders and entrepreneurs that will attain the summit of achievement.
But the adventure doesn't stop there, for Clash explores the adventure of discovery, the extremes of the mind with Edward Teller and others as he pursues that most perilous of summits-the knowledge regarded by some as frightening in itself. But Clash understands that the most dangerous summits provide the broadest vistas. As Professor Teller says in the book, 'I have never had any doubts that knowledge is good. And I never had any tendency to be afraid of knowledge.' One can feel Dr. Teller's resigned depression at being attacked for discovering dangerous knowledge, and his still visible disbelief that he was attacked for telling the truth when no one else would. 'To the Limits' clearly demonstrates that one man not doing something neither stops the information from existing, nor does it stop someone else from finding or doing it anyway, whether it be a climbing a mountain, or building a smarter or better bomb. Mr. Clash successfully showed me the meaning of being alone at the top of a mountain, and being alone in one's mind with the truth. Two perilous adventures testing the essence of our character.
`If we did all the things we are capable of doing, we could literally astound ourselves.' - Thomas Edison Jim Clash lives by these words. In every aspect of his life from business to the extremes of the North and South Pole, Jim Clash has realized the adventure life can be if we would only realize it.
This is one of the rare books that has the power to inspire.
Extreme Adventure Please, Hold the Biz.......2003-06-26
But for all the good there is to say about the writing, I find myself uneasy about the book's prominently advertised intentions. Promoting the tie between adventure and business may enhance book sales but puncture some of the continuity of Clash's writing. On page three, Clash does a great job presenting: "Let's face it, evolution has extracted the primal excitement out of a workweek ... baby boomers who find themselves trapped ... are forced to buy excitement." Yet, in several sections Clash diverges, going many pages with little more than a passing stab at the relationship of business to adventure. While some chapters are innately tied to business, others, such as the first few, stray away from what is promised on the cover: a thread tying business and adventure. Clash may have overestimated the obviousness of the parallel between business success and adventuring success or occasionally tried to build the links into the writing as an afterthought. (This is the only issue holding it back from a 5-star rating.)
Carving out those parallels between the disciplines is difficult and in at least a few places he neglected the task.
Clash returned too often to the questions surrounding Scott's death in the first few chapters. I got the impression he was fascinated with death (aren't we all to an extent?). The Dalai Lama says that without a curiosity and respect for death, we can't have a true appreciation for life. However, in this book, he asked the question of too many interviewees and the issue became a reader distraction examining a particular event rather than an echo of the central theme of taking risk to achieve reward.
Regardless of whether the book returns often enough or in enough detail to the adventure/business theme or whether Clash overemphasizes an episode, the story telling is compelling and sophisticated. The flow is mostly logical (although heavy emphasis on mountaineering early on makes me anticipate a full book on climbing experiences) and carry the book through to its conclusion. All in all, this is a heart-pounding adventure journal - thoroughly researched and written with passion - that I would recommend with the caveat that the reader not expect a full-blown discussion of adventure's relation to business.
