4 out of 5 stars Puppy Intensive Care: A Breeder's Guide to Care of Newborn Puppies.......2007-07-22

nicely put together also I would recemmend this book to people that are just starting in the breeding world.
For an experience breeder I would want more infos ans explainations.
But over all a great book

5 out of 5 stars Pay Attention!.......2007-07-20

That seems to be the main message George Alston is giving. Pay attention to your dog, the judge, the ring conditions, and your competition. He gives great advice on how to adjust your stride, the leash, your grooming, etc. to give your dog the best opportunity to win. He also includes wonderful chapters on Psychology and Ring Etiquette, something that can make or break the handler - not just the dog. He shows showing as the art, not just the mechanics.

5 out of 5 stars Must have for a Show Dogs Library.......2007-01-18

When I spoke to my dogs breeder, her comment was that I needed this book. I was happy to tell her I had already ordered and read it! She is a veteran and reads it every Spring before she steps into the Show Ring to brush up on things. I found it to be very helpful as a beginner and I've found it even more helpful after I've been in the ring a couple of times. It leaves out a lot of the "fluff" but is a great companion book to some of the others that start out at the very beginning. Very easy to read. Confidence builder!

4 out of 5 stars The Winning Edge:Show Rings Secrets by George Alston.......2006-12-08

Haven't been showing dogs for long so I was looking for any pointers to polish up my act. This book was great I read it from start to finish and about to turn around and do it again. Highly recommended !!!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars A MUST read for EVERYONE, not just leaders.......2007-04-19

Although it's called The LEADER'S Edge, a more appropriate title might be The PERSON'S Edge, as I think it's a must read for EVERYONE over the age of 18. It's a wonderfully easy-to-understand and deeply thought-provoking book about how we show up to the world (which is often quite different than how we think the world sees us) and how, through heightened self-awareness and feedback, we can enhance our personal brand in everyday situations - professional and personal. I've recommended this book to everyone from the leader of a 600+ person practice to administrative personnel, and the reactions have been equally positive and powerful. I can't wait for my children to be old enough to read it themselves. I truly believe the world would operate more effectively if we all invested the time to read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Clear Steps to Improve Your Career.......2006-05-01

This book is very well written. Susan clearly describes steps to take to assess and improve your job skills, then goes on to explain how to market yourself within an existing organization. After reading the book I understand how some people work hard all their careers, but never move to influential positions in a corporation. You won't do that if you read the book!
I am currently loaning the book to young co-workers as a "must read."

5 out of 5 stars smart book.......2005-11-18

This is a smart leader's tool--models, frameworks, examples, case studies. The author has clear real life experience which makes it different than theoretical approaches by those with no practical background.

5 out of 5 stars The Leader's Edge.......2005-09-28

Excellent for leaders at all levels! This is an engrossing, informative & extremely helpful book replete with practical advice, guidance & wisdom. I highly recommend it to anyone in a leadership/management position.

Book Description

A FULLY REVISED AND UPDATED EDITION OF THE INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLER.

What does it take to be a firefighter? Fighter pilot? Top of the heap in the sales department? A brilliant customer service advisor? Esteemed and respected corporate leader?

What does it take to get ahead? To separate yourself from the competition" Lead a less stressful existence? To be fulfilled in personal life and professional pursuits?

What is the most important dynamic of your makeup? Is it your A0 intelligence quotient? Or B0 emotional quotient?

If you picked "A", you are partly correct. Your intelligence quotient can be a predictor of things such as academic achievement. But it is fixed and unchangeable. The real key to personal and professional growth, and happiness, is your emotional quotient, which you can nurture and develop.

The EQ Edge, by Steven J. Stein and Howard E. Book, shows you how the dynamic of emotional intelligence works. By understanding EQ, you can build more meaningful relationships, boost your confidence and optimism, and respond to challenges with enthusiasm--all of which are essential ingredients of success.

The book features case studies and fascinating--and surprising--insights into EQ and the workplace. As an HR or line manager, this book will help you determine which personnel are the right fit for job opportunities and who among your staff will be the most promising leaders and drivers of your business. And because CEOs to front-line workers also have other roles--parent, spouse, caregiver to aging parents, neighbor, friend--The EQ Edge also describes how everyone can be more successful in these relationships.

"Finally, a practical and useable guide to what emotional intelligence is all about. This book peels the onions on what EQ really is and teaches the reader to assess their own EQ and how to increase it. This is the holy grail for career success."

--Michael Feiner, Professor, Columbia Graduate School of Business and author of The Feiner Points of leadership

5 out of 5 stars Practical, Easy to Read and Apply to Real Life.......2007-05-29

Useful summary of what EQ is all about. Describes how to understand the connection to success in relationships and business. Practical exercises help learn ways to apply the theories to improve emotional intelligence quotient (EQ).

4 out of 5 stars Great for People wanting an Introduction on EQ-i.......2003-12-18

This books is very easy to read, it goes through all the stages and criteria of being 'Emotionally Intelligent', while showing examples/stories on different situations and how one could handle it with greater EQ-i ability.

Although I have some backgrounds on this subject, I still find this book encouraging, and it's good to refer back to once in a while.

I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to better their EQ-i or just curious.

5 out of 5 stars Pleasantly Surprised By Contents.......2001-01-26

I was not sure what to expect when I started to read this book. The second author is a psychiatrist and an organizational consultant. The first author, Steven Stein is a psychologist, but also well known for heading up a very successful test publishing company. Was the book going to be an advertisement for his tests? Would his success as a businessperson enhance the credibility of the message?

The book was very easy to get into. The writing is engaging. It starts with a brief history and definition of emotional intelligence (something Goleman avoids in his first book on the subject). It focuses on Reuven BarOn's definition but also includes Peter Salovey and John Mayer's definition - the originators of the concept.

The book, to my pleasant surprise, does not focus on the test (Emotional Quotient Inventory -EQ-i), but on how to gauge yourself (using exercises provided in the book) and work on improving yourself in the 15 specific areas of emotional intelligence. For the most part the exercises are taken from well-validated methods of cognitive-behavior therapy. As a psychologist I have no problem recommending this book to clients. In fact, there is more data behind this approach than what is proposed in many of the "best-selling" books out there. (For the academically oriented professional, please read the EQ-i test manual.)

Most interesting to me were some of the studies in the last chapter. It is very unusual for self-help books, and books on emotional intelligence to include original research on the importance of the concept. This makes the book great for those people you know who doubt the importance of E.I. To see how E.I. has made a difference to the U.S. Air Force, and companies like American Express and the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce is impressive.

I've actually reviewed the research on the EQ-i, the test that much of the research is based on. The normative group is bigger and better than many tests in the marketplace: almost 42,000 people in 36 countries. There are also some good scientific publications on it. While there is no "perfect" test of E.I., I haven't found anything that even comes close to this one. In fact, I've come across many tests being used by companies that don't even come close to having the research that this one has. But the book is not about the test. You can't even get the test unless you are a psychologist or qualified management consultant or vocational counsellor.

Was the book an advertisement? Not really. The examples, which are very realistic, cover work and home situations.

5 out of 5 stars Rated #3 Best Business Book of The Year.......2001-01-24

I bought this book because it was rated the #3 best business book of the year in the Globe and Mail (Canada's National Newspaper), Wednesday, December 15. - even higher than "Who Moved My Cheese?".

I was not disappointed. I found it easy to read and quick to get into. The book gives a great overview of emotional intelligence - I now have a better understanding of what it really is. A few different definitions are given, but the focus is on Bar-On's theory.

While the book's research data, presented at the beginning and end, is based on Bar-On's test, it is not the focus of the book. The bulk of the book deals with each of the 15 areas of emotional intelligence - how you can gauge yourself, and how you can improve.

The examples are very good. After I finished the book, my 12-year-old son picked it up. He started to flip through it and ended up reading it - and he doesn't get through too many books.

I've recommended it to a few people at work and they weren't dissapointed.

1 out of 5 stars Just an "Infomercial".......2001-01-05

I was surprised and disappointed to find The EQ Edge was just an "infomercial" for Reuven Bar-On's emotional intelligence test. Steven Stein is the publisher of the test AND the book's senior author. The book's content is largely a series of testimonials and unsubstantiated claims which have the same credibility as the latest diet fad.

I am a practicing Industrial/Organizational Psychologist who would love to have a genuine test of emotional intelligence; but, in my opinion, Bar-On's EQ-i test fails to measure up to basic professional standards of validity.

In a nut shell, it is under researched and over hyped. At this point in it's development, the test is definitely not something I would dare use for real world personnel decisions.

Book Description

Why is America so rich and powerful? The answer lies in our genes, according to psychologist John Gartner.

Hypomania, a genetically based mild form of mania, endows many of us with unusual energy, creativity, enthusiasm, and a propensity for taking risks. America has an extraordinarily high number of hypomanics -- grandiose types who leap on every wacky idea that occurs to them, utterly convinced it will change the world. Market bubbles and ill-considered messianic crusades can be the downside. But there is an enormous upside in terms of spectacular entrepreneurial zeal, drive for innovation, and material success. Americans may have a lot of crazy ideas, but some of them lead to brilliant inventions.

Why is America so hypomanic? It is populated primarily by immigrants. This self-selection process is the boldest natural experiment ever conducted. Those who had the will, optimism, and daring to take the leap into the unknown have passed those traits on to their descendants.

Bringing his audacious and persuasive thesis to life, Gartner offers case histories of some famous Americans who represent this phenomenon of hypomania. These are the real stories you never learned in school about some of those men who made America: Columbus, who discovered the continent, thought he was the messiah. John Winthrop, who settled and defined it, believed Americans were God's new chosen people. Alexander Hamilton, the indispensable founder who envisioned America's economic future, self-destructed because of pride and impulsive behavior. Andrew Carnegie, who began America's industrial revolution, was sure that he was destined personally to speed up human evolution and bring world peace. The Mayer and Selznick families helped create the peculiarly American art form of the Hollywood film, but familial bipolar disorders led to the fall of their empires. Craig Venter decoded the human genome, yet his arrogance made him despised by most of his scientific colleagues, even as he spurred them on to make great discoveries.

While these men are extraordinary examples, Gartner argues that many Americans have inherited the genes that have made them the most successful citizens in the world.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Creativity and Hypomania.......2007-04-23

This book discovers the link between many creative and successful people who have lived with bi polar conditions in the past with notable success.

4 out of 5 stars Entertaining psycho-sociology, psycho-history.......2007-01-06

A warning about this book first; when I got it in the mail I had other work planned that evening but once I started reading I couldn't stop until the end. It's well written and entertaining but most importantly thought provoking. Rigorous science it is not and I can't comment on the historical biographies as my field is medicine, not history.

John Gartner makes a compelling case for immigrant populations being enriched in people who have bipolar traits. Given a sufficient number of them in the population, and you get places like America, Australia and Canada whose populations are almost entirely made up of immigrants. America seems to have a critical mass of bipolars which makes it even more attractive to other bipolars and, in John Gartner's view, one ends up with the positive feedback loops of energetic people making things happen at a far greater rate than anywhere else in the world. This also explains many of the down sides to America as bipolarity also has a depressive side and bipolars can be very impulsive.

Obviously this book only looks at one aspect of what makes America unique but I've found it very thought provoking. Many of John Gartner's assertions are important scientific questions that need to be answered through proper controlled studies. I had been toying with some of the same ideas over the years, but John Gartner put them all together in this book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent explanation of a confusing diagnosis - but concerned about the reviewer in VA.......2006-07-14

This is one of the only books that is devoted to this fuzzy area of psychiatry, discussing a diagnosis that is often misdiagnosed. Unfortunately it has been so by a recent reviewer who gave it one star...You've been "clinically diagnosed" wrong if you were diagnosed with hypomania - as a hypomanic I can say that your description of what you've done to yourself in your life would not be a result of hypomania. Find a new psychiatrist who will treat you properly. Best of luck.

5 out of 5 stars We ARE all crazy!.......2006-05-01

When I first heard of this book I was quite amused by the idea that Americans might be, well, Americans because we're genetically inclined to be a little crazy. The book convinced me that it's true. And by the way, ignore the Publisher's Weekly review, which is made up of bald-faced lies about the book.

The book offers fascinating insights into some of America's most influential people, all of whom were clearly hypomanic. Gartner chooses his subjects with skill among those who created the things that make America unique. He starts, suitably enough, with Christopher Columbus himself, and tells us a lot of things about him our history teachers never did. America-bashing Europeans will doubtless be gratified to know that he was certifiably loony... but it was that very craziness that made his achievement possible.

The next chapter deals with the Puritan religious fanatics who bequeathed to America two things that have remained important: faith in religion even while Europe imagines itself to be too sophisticated for religion and Communist countries (what's left of them) attack it as limiting the power of the state and implying that commissars might someday have to answer to Someone for their crimes; and religious freedom.

The next suitable choice is a Founding Father, Alexander Hamilton, without whom we might not have had a Constitution. Industry is another American gift to the world, so there is a chapter about steel magnate Andrew Carnegie. Movies are made the world over but the industry has always been dominated by America, and according to Gartner, early Hollywood was virtually a colony of hypomanics, which explains the frenetic behavior for which show business types are known.

Since the entire book has been contending that Americans are genetically inclined to be hypomanic, it seems fitting that he concludes with a chapter about one of the scientists engaged in mapping the human genome.

Every few years, American newspapers start fretting that our dominance of the world's economy and politics is going to be taken away by some other up-and-coming country - Japan, China, someplace. If Gartner is right, and there is little reason to doubt he is, that will never happen, because there is one natural resource here that no country can possibly reproduce: the wide distribution of the hypomanic gene.

4 out of 5 stars Honest Self-Reflection.......2005-10-21

I'm noticing in the "Self-Help" or "Motivational" genre of books, a lot of them basically describe various types of personalities through rose-colored glasses. Readers then love these books, because they see themselves described in these books in a sympathetic, ego-boosting light. For instance, a lot of unorganized people who fancy themselves to be misunderstood or misguided geniuses or entrepenuers will read this book and say "Oh, this is me -- I'm destined for greatness, just like these people. I'm the one-in-a-million." The books essentially succeed through flattery, but have unfortunate negative consequence of perpetuating people's self-delusion. In reality, 9 out of 10 successful people have aquired some sort of marketable skill, be it nursing or hair-cutting or accounting or masonry or whatever, and then live their lives in a disciplined, planned-out manner. This isn't to say that these authors intentionally flatter readers to sell books -- it's just that books that do somehow flatter readers naturally become popular. So ask yourself -- are you drawn to this book because it reinforces your own self-delusion?

2 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2007-03-20

This is another example of hearing "the same ole stuff." Can't some author get origional? This was so elementary and certainly not "NEW" information, as the title suggests.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding insights from a former top assistant!.......2004-07-01

This book has helped so many people! It's perfectly brilliant.

I think it's insane that reviewers are commenting on publisher's type-o's instead of commenting on how significant this book really is. Obviously, Ms. Duncan proofed her own book and after meeting Ms. Duncan at an event, I mentioned the reviews about the errors in the book. Ms. Duncan and her staff has tried desperately for years to demand that the book be reprinted. Some things unfortunately are out of one's hands, and I recognize this after years of being a journalist. Look at the NY Times! And every other book on your shelf! They all have errors!

Ms. Duncan has been instrumental in the salary increases, and gaining recognition for this truly unique role! I recommend this book to anyone in the role or considering it!

4 out of 5 stars Interesting Read.......2000-07-19

I thoroughly enjoyed Ms. Duncan's book. I found it an easy read, packed with lots of excellent information.

As with the other reviewer I was extremely disappointed in the skills test in the back of the book. Missing questions, answers to questions that weren't printed.

I wonder if Ms. Duncan has read her own book? Did she review the skills test information in the back before it was published? If the fault lies with the publisher, I hope she got her money back. I also hope she'll do a re-print with the skill test corrected because I found it very helpful in identifying weak areas in my own skill set.

I've been an Executive Secretary/Assistant for the past ten years. Often a good assistant is taken for granted. I appreciated Ms. Duncan's affirmation that my job is more than a job, it's a career and that not just anyone can be a good assistant.

If you can get past all the problems with the skill test in the back of the book, I think you'll find the content extremely interesting, insightful, and motivating.

2 out of 5 stars Talk About Ironic!.......2000-05-11

I just finished reading this book about the "new executive assistant". Of course it emphasizes attention to detail, checking your work, accuracy, etc. Upon completing the extensive skills test in the back of book, I was horrified to find the following blatant errors: 1. In the vocabulary section, the questions skip from #56 to #61, yet in the answer section, these questions do appear. 2. The proofreading section fails to point out periods that are missing at the end of two sentences. Here's the kicker: 3. When I went to check my answers for the spelling section, I discovered that there were only two answers out of 110 questions. To top, there were answers for #110 - 122, which didn't exist in the first place.

OK, can anyone find a proofreader at McGraw Hill to catch these types of errors? How can anyone take this book seriously? The other person who reviewed this book obviously did not read the whole thing. What a disappointment! I do recommend another book that I read. It's called The Valuable Office Professional by Michelle Burke. She is right on the money. There are some more in-depth self-evaluation tests, which go much further than vocabulary and grammar skills. I also got some information about her consulting service, which I am trying to convince management our company needs. That's my summary of this book. Good luck with your administrative careers no matter who you are or where you live!

5 out of 5 stars Ms. Duncan has written a mentoring masterpiece!.......1999-02-06

"The New Executive Assistant" is a must-read for aspiring or seasoned executive assistants, their bosses, and everyone in between.

Ms. Duncan doesn't just advise you to develop a proactive rather than a reactive approach to your administrative career, she guides you to discovering both what you want out of life and what your career can provide. She covers all the important bases for surviving in today's fast-paced world: learning to adapt to change (technical and cultural); mastering the fundamentals of communicating what you really mean; tapping into your management and leadership potential; handling both yourself and others in conflict situations; promoting yourself, your boss, and your company; and regaining your spiritual "center". Most importantly, however, Ms. Duncan asks wether or not you are cut out to be an executive assistant. Life is too short to just have a job; whatever it may be, find a career that works for you, challenges you, and fits your personality.

Packed with objective insights, advice, and enjoyable witticisms, "The New Executive Assistant" delivers. I found in this one book what countless seminars and 50-minute training series have not been able to provide; I found truely usable, relevant insights and information. Ms. Duncan has created a mentoring master piece for executive assistants (and anyone who wants to understand them)!

Rather than dwelling on dry, nitpicky "rules," the book emphasizes appropriate, effective communication and behavior as a means to get ahead. Simply written and containing quizzes, checklists, and sidebar examples, the book shows readers how to:

* Recover from a major workplace faux pas
* Handle sensitive e-mail and phone communications
* Make a great impression on bosses, and get along with "enemies"

5 out of 5 stars Essential To Any Organization.......2001-05-31

This book is essential to any organization, big or small. The author uses a logical, simple, yet very powerful step by step system to help anyone in any work situation. A very easy and effective way to increase cooperation from others. The exercises and hands-on applications really helped to further solidify what I had read and allowed me to develop my own personal strategical way of increasing influence. I highly recommened this book to those interested in improving and streamlining internal organizational networks.

5 out of 5 stars Learn When to Push and When to Pull.......2001-05-05

This is a tremendously helpful and eminently practical book. I was especially impressed by the concept of "push-pull energy", the idea that there are two very different ways of influencing people and that you need to know when and how to use each one, or when to combine them. (Basically, push energy is assertive and pull energy is inclusive, i.e. pulling people in). It's a subtle concept but the exercises throughout the book show you how to use it to design a very sophisticated and effective influence strategy.

Book Description

Following modern executives as they push themselves to the limits in life and in business

In To the Limits, adventure writer Jim Clash examines the phenomenon of corporate leaders and millionaires who test their limits through high-end, risky adventure-and links the life and business lessons they have learned along the way. Based on his popular column in Forbes, Clash details his own exotic adventures and includes anecdotes from high-profile, daredevil executives who share his passion for adventure-from flying to the edge of space 84,000 feet up (Dennis Tito, Chief Executive of Wilshire Associates), to climbing 20,000-foot mountain peaks (Timothy Forbes, Chief Operating Officer of Forbes, Inc.), to racing open-wheel cars (Mark Patterson, Vice Chairman of Credit Suisse First Boston), to swimming at the North Pole (Geoffrey Kent, Chief Executive of Abercrombie & Kent). Clash's dramatic narrative also explores the powerful connection between extreme success in business and in life, and covers topics such as risk-taking, testing personal limits, and dealing with decision-making responsibilities.

James M. Clash (New York, NY) covers mutual funds for Forbes magazine and writes a popular column called "The Adventurer" for Forbes Global. An avid wilderness enthusiast, he is a Fellow in the Explorers Club who has undertaken a number of unforgettable challenges-he has climbed the Matterhorn, ridden in a MiG jet fighter at two-and-a-half-times the speed of sound, driven Indy cars at upwards of 180 mph, climbed virgin mountains in Antarctica, and has visited the North Pole twice. Clash has also interviewed legendary adventurers such as Buzz Aldrin, Sir Roger Bannister, Sir Edmund Hillary, and four-time Indy 500 winner Rick Mears-all of whom are included in this book.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Limitless Appeal.......2004-06-29

You don't have to be a CEO to dive, soar or speed through Jim Clash's book. Forget the title, this is not a business book, it's a treasure of tales for the ultimate X-gamer, or for anyone who dreams of scaling a mountain, racing a car or soaring into space. Clash doesn't just write about people living on the edge, he is one of them! He shares his eye-popping adventures, from driving an Indy race car at 200 mph to flying to the edge of space, with an understated style that offers no exaggerated superlatives of his experiences or achievements. He writes "matter of fact -- with impact," taking you to the most remote and breathe-taking (literally) locales on and above the planet. He lets you see for yourself the magnificent vistas he's seen, and takes you inside the minds and emotional motors of the people driven to excel and exceed the limits of our world. If you dream of going where you've never dared, this is the book to light your inner fire.

5 out of 5 stars A terrific read and one heck of a ride!!!!!.......2004-01-19

If you'd like to "get away" without leaving the comfort of your home, this is the book for you. The author has obviously enjoyed each interesting adventure and so deliciously shares with the reader. Mr. Clash is a master storyteller. The book was a pure joy to read.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Book I Have Read in a Long Time... A+++++++.......2003-12-24

Not by shaking a hand, but by reading a book, I met an exceptional person today, and his name is Jim Clash. If one were to attempt to sell the life of Jim Clash as a work of fiction it would never sell. Unfortunately, most people wouldn't believe it, because most people don't believe that life can be an adventure, Jim Clash does.

Fortunately, Jim Clash writes about his own life with the skill of a novelist. You are traveling 208 miles an hour vibrating under his helmet in a Lambourgini. You are bracing yourself against the rocky summit of Everest as the wind tries to pull you to your death.

I feel as if I've been on a hundred exotic journey's in the past few hours. Jim and I have traveled to the North Pole, the South Pole, space, the desert, the mountains, and the depths of the sea. And he really did all these things-an incredible human being who clearly understands the definition of `living'.

Jim Clash knows that businessmen who approach their own field like it is the adventure of a lifetime are those leaders and entrepreneurs that will attain the summit of achievement.

But the adventure doesn't stop there, for Clash explores the adventure of discovery, the extremes of the mind with Edward Teller and others as he pursues that most perilous of summits-the knowledge regarded by some as frightening in itself. But Clash understands that the most dangerous summits provide the broadest vistas. As Professor Teller says in the book, 'I have never had any doubts that knowledge is good. And I never had any tendency to be afraid of knowledge.' One can feel Dr. Teller's resigned depression at being attacked for discovering dangerous knowledge, and his still visible disbelief that he was attacked for telling the truth when no one else would. 'To the Limits' clearly demonstrates that one man not doing something neither stops the information from existing, nor does it stop someone else from finding or doing it anyway, whether it be a climbing a mountain, or building a smarter or better bomb. Mr. Clash successfully showed me the meaning of being alone at the top of a mountain, and being alone in one's mind with the truth. Two perilous adventures testing the essence of our character.

`If we did all the things we are capable of doing, we could literally astound ourselves.' - Thomas Edison Jim Clash lives by these words. In every aspect of his life from business to the extremes of the North and South Pole, Jim Clash has realized the adventure life can be if we would only realize it.

This is one of the rare books that has the power to inspire.

4 out of 5 stars Extreme Adventure Please, Hold the Biz.......2003-06-26

Whenever some responsibility drew me away from reading To the Limits, I was always encouraged to return to James M. Clash's adventures up high, down low, and at sea level. The writer not only relates experiences few others have had but also demonstrates the skill to communicate them effectively and with poetics. Two interludes - one concerning his mountaineering friend Scott and the other about the wildflower and the Trinitite at the bomb site - proved particularly telling of the writer's story telling prowess. In addition, he paints the picture for the reader in several anecdotes about climbing and race car driving in such a way that it leaves the body wanting to touch what the reader's imagination can now grasp.

But for all the good there is to say about the writing, I find myself uneasy about the book's prominently advertised intentions. Promoting the tie between adventure and business may enhance book sales but puncture some of the continuity of Clash's writing. On page three, Clash does a great job presenting: "Let's face it, evolution has extracted the primal excitement out of a workweek ... baby boomers who find themselves trapped ... are forced to buy excitement." Yet, in several sections Clash diverges, going many pages with little more than a passing stab at the relationship of business to adventure. While some chapters are innately tied to business, others, such as the first few, stray away from what is promised on the cover: a thread tying business and adventure. Clash may have overestimated the obviousness of the parallel between business success and adventuring success or occasionally tried to build the links into the writing as an afterthought. (This is the only issue holding it back from a 5-star rating.)

Carving out those parallels between the disciplines is difficult and in at least a few places he neglected the task.

Clash returned too often to the questions surrounding Scott's death in the first few chapters. I got the impression he was fascinated with death (aren't we all to an extent?). The Dalai Lama says that without a curiosity and respect for death, we can't have a true appreciation for life. However, in this book, he asked the question of too many interviewees and the issue became a reader distraction examining a particular event rather than an echo of the central theme of taking risk to achieve reward.

Regardless of whether the book returns often enough or in enough detail to the adventure/business theme or whether Clash overemphasizes an episode, the story telling is compelling and sophisticated. The flow is mostly logical (although heavy emphasis on mountaineering early on makes me anticipate a full book on climbing experiences) and carry the book through to its conclusion. All in all, this is a heart-pounding adventure journal - thoroughly researched and written with passion - that I would recommend with the caveat that the reader not expect a full-blown discussion of adventure's relation to business.

5 out of 5 stars To The Limits: Pushing Yourself to the Edge In Adventure.......2003-06-21

Jim Clash is a classic example of an author that has game. He writes about things he knows. In his book To The Limits, I found myself flipping through the pages with little or no breaks to learn what he experienced as well as to dive into the thoughts and words of some of the worlds greatest adventures; a page turner at its best. As a CPA and also the first person from the Western Hempisphere to climb and ski from 8,000 meters, and from from the death zone on Mt Everest, I can totally relate to where Jim is coming from. The gap between those world adventure leaders he writes about and us mere mortals is bridged in a way that held my attention and entertained me with converstions of fact that were beyond facinating. Adventure has a broad spectrum. It is interesting how Jim correlates that to business and depicts life as an adventure. Nice job. Mike Marolt
