Best resource on the subject.......2007-08-16
In order to help my parents with their trust, I had checked out about a dozen books on the subject from the library. I found Denis Clifford's to be the easiest to follow and easiest to read on a fairly complex subject. I found the book (and his "Plan Your Estate" book) so informative I bought a set for myself.
This book offers lots of "real life" examples of different types of financial scenarios and the best options for setting up a trust that will protect the assets from excessive legal fees and/or estate taxes. It covers almost everything you need to know to either write your own trust or carefully check the details of your trust if prepared by a lawyer.
The CD included provides you with the language you need to write your own by filling in the blanks, as well as the step-by-step procedure to cover all the bases to be certain the trust meets all the legal & tax requirements for trusts.
This book is also apparently updated each year, as the tax and estate laws are frequently being revised. I highly recommend this book, and also highly recommend as a companion book that covers other aspects of financial planning, wills, etc., Dennis Clifford's Plan Your Estate.
I was so impressed I also bought copies of both books for my parents and my sister so we could all get our finances in order.
Another Great Book From NOLO .......2007-05-08
Nolo Press continues the tradition of providing step by step guidance through complex legal processes. Step by step demystification of the process.
Even if you are going to use an attorney this is a good read and you will save many times the cost of the book in having answered your own questions and by receiving a good introduction to the subject.
Highly recommended
Attorney Approved.......2006-03-11
I am an attorney (shyreslaw.com) and I highly recommend this book for those who could use a simple trust and want to avoid probate. Even if you decide to hire an attorney, this book is invaluable because it offers great insight into trusts and avoiding the probate system.
Attorney Denis Clifford wrote this great do-it-yourself book which provides everyone a way to create their own simple living trust. A CD-ROM is also provided so you can easily input your information and print it out.
For a more complete estate plan, the book introduces the importance of pourover wills in case the trust fails to encompass all the property. You may want to peruse Mr. Clifford's Simple Will Book as well (another recommended buy).
Recommend highly..........2006-02-21
"Make Your Own Living Trust" was so easy to follow I recommend it to all the baby boomers. The disc attached to the back made it easy to print the required forms.
Great buy!.......2004-05-18
This book was a god-send! I was skeptical at first because I have no legal backround and I thought that making my own living trust would be complicated at best, impossible at worst. But following a recommendation of a friend I decided to give do-it-yourself law a shot. Boy am I happy I did! I saved a fortune in legal fees and was able to get the job done just as well as if I'd had a lawyer coaching me every step of the way.
Make Your Own Living Trust was easy to use and very accessible. It even has all of the forms you'll need on an enclosed CD-ROM. Thanks to this book I was able to transfer assets such as stocks, real estate and jewelry to my trust, appoint someone to manage the property that I'm leaving my children, and keep control over it while I live. So don't be afraid to do it yourself, you'll save money and get your trust done the way you want it!

Book Description
If you own a second home, you have the potential to boost your annual income by literally thousands of dollars by turning it into a vacation rental that earns money when you aren't using it. In this book-and-CD package, you'll learn exactly how to do it. Even if you're already using your second home as a vacation rental, the book can help you maximize the income it generates each year. It doesn't matter where you want to be along the spectrum of possibilities:
1. If you've never offered your property as a vacation rental before, you'll find all the tools, tips, and information you need to save thousands in commissions by handling everything yourself. It really isn't that hard to do.
2. If you prefer to have a rental agent or property manager take care of everything for you but aren't quite satisfied with the number of bookings you're getting, you'll discover ways to inexpensively promote your property to prospective renters from all over the world--and how to negotiate lower management commissions on the business that you bring in.
3. Or maybe you'd rather steer a middle course by handling the marketing and bookings yourself and buying cleaning and maintenance services from a property manager or from some local firm. That, too, is a viable option.
Whatever course you choose, you'll find everything you need in this book/CD package. Designed as a complete
Vacation Property Owner's Toolkit, the package consists of a 300-page book in a three-ring binder, and a CD containing crucial rental forms and checklists that you can customize and print out for your own use. The CD also contains a collection of Windows programs selected to help you manage and market your vacation property easily and effectively.
And, by the way, after you've applied what you've learned, you can probably reduce or completely eliminate any current print-advertising expenses. The approach described in this package really is that powerful.

Engaging and Full of Practical Wisdom!.......2006-09-05
We're pleased to share this review written by travel writer and vacation-rental guru Joyce Hadley Copeland, author of the "Renting Paradise" series of e-guidebooks on exceptional vacation rental properties. The review originally appeared in Ms. Copeland's Ramblings blog at her RentingParadise.com website and is posted here with her permission. -- Alfred & Emily Glossbrenner, Authors
DON'T TRY THIS AT HOME... THEN AGAIN, MAYBE YOU SHOULD
If you've had great experiences renting vacation homes--and especially if you've been swept into the welcoming (usually figurative) embrace of a particularly passionate owner--a funny thing might start happening. You might start imagining yourself doing the vacation rental thing yourself. And why not ask Alfred and Emily Glossbrenner?
If you own or are thinking of buying a vacation rental property, the Glossbrenners will show you how to pay your mortgage and make money by renting it yourself. Their 300-page book/CD seminar-in-a-box is based on what the couple learned from a decade renting a Williamsburg-style cottage on their property in Bucks County, PA. Today their second home is routinely fully booked as much as six months in advance.
The book is engaging (the Glossbrenners are successful authors with over 60 books to their credit) and full of practical wisdom, step-by-step instructions and clear examples that will guide you in maximizing the Internet to promote and rent your dream vacation or retirement home (finding the right listing sites, boosting your search engine ranking etc.).
HERE'S WHAT I ESPECIALLY LOVE: Guidelines for writing a property description! "Write from the Heart!" These smart-cookie marketers advocate infusing rental descriptions with "personality." (Because, aren't we all tired of the hype?) They talk about "painting a picture" for rental prospects... going into detail about what you (the owner) personally love about the property such as distinctive architectural details or an interesting history... weaving in off-the-beaten-path secret places you've discovered. That's music to a prospective vacation renter's ears. AND they devote a whole section to "Enhancing Your Listing With Great Photos." Hallelujah!
The Glossbrenners also include a CD containing a collection of personally-selected Windows programs to help you manage and market your vacation rental property--in what is becoming a highly competitive market niche--in your spare time.
Check out the 30-day Money-Back Guarantee. But also check out the Glossbrenners' promise: "Regardless of your rental rate, and regardless of season, if you get just one extra booking as a result of what we have to teach you, this vacation rental owner's training package will have paid for itself many times over. And it will continue to do so year after year from now on."
Pssst: Check with your accountant. You may be able to write the whole thing off as a business expense.

The Bible for Vacation Rentals By Owner.......2006-02-25
I have read countless books, magazines, travel guides, marketing manuals to better help me effectively market my vacation rental home. I only wish I read this book first! Emily and Alfred Glossbrenner's book is THE BIBLE of ALL Vacation Rental "How To" books. Skip the "Cliff Notes" and go straight to the source! Since incorporating their tried and true marketing approach, my summer vacation rental property is booked for the summer of 2006 and it is only February!
The best tool for a new vacation rental owner!.......2005-08-02
I have read every book in this category (at least every book that is available on Amazon) and have to say that Glossbrenners' book is the best guide for a vacation rental owner, especially someone just starting out. Alfred and Emily guide you through all of the minute detals of setting up the rental, from the right type of furnishings to the beach towels, pet policies, etc. They carefully explain the possibilities available to a vacation rental owner with Internet advertisement, how to choose the sites to advertise on and go into great detail with setting up listings on the 4 largest US vacation rental listing sites. The CD that comes with the book contains forms that are a great help for creating your first rental agreement or a "getting ready" check list, among others.
We have bought our first rental a little over a year ago and were fully booked for the season within 6 weeks from going online, based on suggestions we implemented from Glossbrenners book. We purchased two more properties this year and once again, having used the basic techniques and tools from Alfred and Emily's book, all 3 properties were fully booked in 2005. This occupancy rate is significantly higher than average for our area. I credit this book with our initial and continuing success.
Thank you, Alfred and Emily!
This book is excellent for renting out your vacation home!.......2005-04-22
We have decided to rent out our San Diego home this summer. Thanks to this book, we are already ahead of schedule; we have 4 out of the 8 weeks booked. My friends in San Diego are impressed and are now working at renting out their houses as well.
The book is well-organized and steps you through step-by-step on how to rent out your vacation property yourself. It is well written and explains everything in the right level of detail.
The biggest problem that I have now is that my friends keep borrowing the book, I need to tell them to buy their own.
Regards,
David Brehm
Book Description
“There are a thousand acts of duplicity and dishonesty every day, some large and some small, some of which undoubtedly take place in your workplace. The question for all of us is, ‘Are we going to resist or just play along the path of least resistance?’ The first hard choice a person of integrity must make is to choose to live, both personally and professionally, in a way that embodies integrity. The power of this book comes from the real-life, in-the-workplace experiences that these executives have been so generously willing to share. None had easy choices, but that’s the point: Integrity is not about easy choices, it’s about the courage to make the right choices.”
—From The Book of Hard Choices
All of us like to think that, in any given situation, we’d act with integrity and do the right thing. But what happens when we get to work each morning? Do the same rules we follow in our personal lives apply to our work lives?
The lines between right and wrong become blurred when we must weigh our obligations to our employer against our own ideas about what is right and wrong. Should altruism trump profit, even to the detriment of the organization? When should you step in to protect an employee and when should the employee be left to take the heat? If the CEO is up to some unethical accounting, should you always risk your job—and the company’s reputation—to sound the alarm?
These are the hard choices, the dilemmas that put your integrity to the test and require you to look beyond organizational policy and industry precedents to find an answer that reflects your personal sense of justice. The Book of Hard Choices goes to the heart of these difficult decisions. James Autry and Peter Roy, experienced executives themselves, interviewed numerous leaders about the tough decisions they’ve made on the job. They spoke with people like former Starbucks president Howard Behar, Iowa Cubs owner Michael Gartner, and Governor Tom Vilsack of Iowa as well as entrepreneurs, military officials, members of the clergy, and a whole host of leaders. The authors dig into the thinking process these people went through, as well as the emotional strain, the self-doubt, and the fear of a wrong decision’s impact on their business, family, or coworkers. Not everyone in this book made the right choice, but all of them were forced to examine their values and make decisions in complicated circumstances. The result is hard-won wisdom on how to navigate the ethical gray-areas of work life—from daily challenges to possible career ending choices—and make the best possible decisions in the most difficult situations.

The first-person accounts are the best part.......2007-09-22
The "lessons to be learned" summaries at the end of each chapter trivialize the stories. The whole point of these accounts is that these were difficult choices to make, not always with happily-ever-after endings, and not always choices that everyone in good faith would agree with. But this book contains more complex real-life situations than I've ever seen in any other leadership book, and it conveys how each person made his or her choices and the conflicts they felt.

From the first sip of your morning coffee to the last sheep you count at night, you will face an average of 23 adversities, predicts author Paul G. Stoltz in this follow-up to the best-selling The Adversity Quotient. The key to coping, he says, lies in improving your Adversity Quotient--"the measurable, precise, and unconscious way you respond to adversity." Here, Stoltz applies AQ to the challenges of working in the "entrepreneurial, high-velocity New Economy."
First, he details the bad news: AQ is hardwired into you during your youth by parental models and early experiences. But the good news--that your AQ can be improved and put to work on your job--is the promise this book capably delivers. Stoltz, an organizational communications expert who has measured the Adversity Quotient of 100,000 people, is fond of using mountain-climbing metaphors to describe elements of organizational adversity. For example, low AQers are "quitters" who have given up the climb or "campers" who have found a safe, shady spot. But for the resilient high AQers, "the climbers," there ain't no mountain high enough.
The lower your AQ, the more of a toll job stress will take, warns Stoltz, whose assessment tools for measuring AQ are as detailed as his strategies for creating a "climbing culture" in your organization. The pages are packed with maps, self-assessments, specific strategies, and smart end-of-chapter summaries. This hands-on approach is undermined at times by too many metaphors, acronyms, and lists, as well as a tendency to oversell AQ as a predictor of success. Still, for executives, managers, and employees alike, The Adversity Quotient @ Work is a supportive and strategic home-schooling course for coping with the demands of today's workplace.--Barbara Mackoff
Book Description
Make Everyday Challenges The Key To Your Success --Putting the Principles of AQ Into Action
In 1997, Paul Stoltz unleashed a revolution with his groundbreaking book Adversity Quotient: Turning Obstacles into Opportunities, introducing the concept of the Adversity Quotient into public consciousness. Now, in Adversity Quotient @ Work, the eagerly anticipated follow-up to his bestseller, Stoltz applies the principles of his brilliant theory to the uniquely challenging environment of the workplace.
Adversity Quotient, or AQ, is a measure of one's ability to handle adversity. People who can't handle adversity become easily overwhelmed and emotional, then pull back and stop trying; those who handle adversity well become the leaders of today and tomorrow. Stoltz shows you not only how to measure your own AQ but how to improve it, and how to put these ideas to work for you and your organization. Based on the time-tested principles established by his first book, Adversity Quotient@ Work clearly demonstrates how workers and managers can use the concept of AQ to their own advantage and to the benefit of their clients, customers, and organizations. Designed for managers, supervisors, and employees, from the smallest technology start-up to the largest Fortune 500 multinational, Adversity Quotient @ Work gives readers simple, powerful ways to supercharge their lives and organizations immediately.
Adversity Quotient @ Work teaches readers how to hire and retain highly motivated and talented workers, develop employees to their full potential, and create a leadership culture that encourages all to put forth their best efforts and maximize their performance capabilities. Based on real research performed with thousands of managers and members of the workforce on the front lines of hundreds of businesses, it will quickly become any corporation's indispensable handbook for success.

Climb Every Mountain!.......2001-01-09
Finally a book that explains how a person can manifest a more powerful personal and professional life.Going beyond simple advice and into simplifying vital scientific knowledge, AQ@Work is filled with achieveable and exciting methods to help everyone access their potential. This book doesn't tell the reader he should be more successful, more productive, or more positive,, this book actually describes usuable tools for becoming more successful, more productive and more positive! The use of the Climbers, Campers, and Quitters metaphor is a brilliant way to guide reader's visualization of their current status on life's path. Some may resent the labels and metaphors, I would urge them to read the description of Camper once more and weep....
Adversity Quotient @ Work - Works!.......2001-01-01
Read this book! Dr. Paul Stotlz has written a wonderful book that can help us all to accomplish more at work and to enjoy it while we do. With his easy to undertsand concepts and easy to follow "how to's" we can all learn to harness the adversities and obstacles that we face every day and to use them as springboards in our lives. This book has already helped me and many of my friends to develop a higher level of perseverance which is helping to drive higher levels of accomplishment and statisfaction not only in our work but in every facet of lives. Dr. Stoltz, thank you for sharing your great insight!
Pop Psychology Masquerading As Science.......2000-12-11
Very, very little science in this one and one of many current books taking on a simple metaphor and developing a whole theory around it (...life is a climb, don't quit...or how about, life is like fishing, try different lures each day...or, life is like sharpening a pencil---sharp points work effectively, but sharpen too much, and the pencil grows short...). I went to a writer's workshop and the consultant there stated that the quickest way to publish a book is to think up one of these silly metaphors and write a self-help book around it. Maybe the author of this one was in the same workshop! Anyway, my advice is for readers to "climb a real mountain" and read good science---not this turkey.
WHAT ARE YOU DOING WRONG?.......2000-11-25
Not moving up the corporate ladder as quickly as you think you should? Was your brilliant idea or presention rejected? Were you overlooked for a promotion? Why? This book attempts to answer these questions. Author, Paul Stoltz has identified three types of people in the workplace, and how they react to setbacks. First there are quitters who are bitter and avoid change; secondly, campers who settle into comfort zones, and thirdly, climbers who are relentless in the pursuit of their goals. He emphasizes that "climbers" are the achievers. The book is is filled with self assessment charts and maps for strategies. But the key, it seems is perserverance not paranoia; focused effort not whining; and setting realistic goals, then taking action. Employers and employees will welcome this "window" into how to succeed in the business world. Oh yes, this author writes about work-related stress. After you read this book, take a look at "Don't Sweat the Small Stuff for Teens", by Dr. Richard Carlson. It has keys to success for everyone not just teens; and coping with stress is a universal challenge. What is your Adversity Quotient?
AQ Intro for High Performance at Work.......2000-11-18
'AQ@Work' is aimed at consultants, students, or those in business who want to create a structured reaction mindset (initially consciously incompetent, to unconsciously competent) to performing better individually and in teams in the workplace.
The attractively illustrated action-oriented chapters span: Expanding your capacity- the human operating system (Quitters, Campers & Climbers); The science of AQ; Measuring Your AQ; The CORE of a climber (Control, Ownership, Reach, Endurance); Developing Response-Able Climbers (LEAD= Listen to Response, Establish Accountability, Analyze the Evidence, and Do Something); Coaching and Mentoring Climbers; Defining and Finding Climbers; Hiring Climbers; Building Climbing Teams; Building A Climbing Culture.
Strengths include: the presentation (illustrations, tables, summaries, action lists); the lively engaging style; interesting "humans as computers with software" analogies; the usability of materials for in-company training; and the credibility of AQ itself (data set and application group spanning over 100,000 people Worldwide across cultures, sectors, and professions).
Weaknesses include: the lack of references; a need more anecdotes or tabulated quantified success stories (rather than repetitive, almost consulting sales pitch); needs 25% less page count for content; dull 2nd half becomes a "verbatim training notes doc" (to this reviewer); lack of depth to "science" (e.g. misses many credible individual/ team motivation/performance models e.g.2 misses communications models & significance to team performance); offers unsubstantiated contradictions with standard psychology view to internalizing/ externalizing problems and subsequent personal growth (or not); and anecdotes sometimes abstract/remote from complexities of real work environments. Interestingly, Cypress Semiconductor is hailed here as a success story, and as a failure in Pfeffer's recent OK "Hidden Value" and OK "Knowing Doing-Gap" texts.
Alternatives include: Pfeffer's efforts; Goleman's OK "Working with Emotional Intelligence"; and Schwartz's inspirational "Magic of Thinking Big". At the "quality-end" look at: the superb "First to the Future- on Active Leadership" by Willi Railo (rigorous proven methods to coach & lead Olympic-standard people, applicable to all) (ISBN82-991169-5-3 Norbok A/S 1995); and Jensen's punchy 'Simplicity' (ISBN 073820210X 2000). More peripherally look at: "The Time Management PocketBook" and "Yoga for Dummies" offering approaches for motivation, focus, and action to being better balanced as well as corporate citizens.
Overall 'AQ@Work' is only worthwhile- but it could be amongst the best with more rigor & science, less words, and more success statistics.
Book Description
At times in our careers, we've all been aware of a "gut feeling" guiding our decisions. Too often, we dismiss these feelings as "hunches" and therefore untrustworthy. But renowned researcher Gary Klein reveals that, in fact, 90 percent of the critical decisions we make is based on our intuition. In his new book,
THE POWER OF INTUITION, Klein shows that intuition, far from being an innate "sixth sense," is a learnable--and essential--skill.
Based on interviews with senior executives who make important judgments swiftly, as well as firefighters, emergency medical staff, soldiers, and others who often face decisions with immediate life-and-death implications, Klein demonstrates that the expertise to recognize patterns and other cues that enable us--intuitively--to make the right decisions--is a natural extension of experience.
Through a three-tiered process called the "Exceleration Program," Klein provides readers with the tools they need to build the intuitive skills that will help them make tough choices, spot potential problems, manage uncertainty, and size up situations quickly. Klein also shows how to communicate such decisions more effectively, coach others in the art of intuition, and recognize and defend against an overdependence on information technology.
The first book to demystify the role of intuition in decision making,
THE POWER OF INTUITION is essential reading for those who wish to develop their intuition skills, wherever they are in the organizational hierarchy.
Customer Reviews:
grab it now!.......2007-08-28
One of the best books about decision making. Very insightful! Especially for those managers who used too much metrics ONLY for their daily works.
Good book, lousy title.......2007-06-11
The title is this book's worst feature - Klein re-branded the book and in so doing went from a strong if dry original title ("Intuition at Work") to the more sensationalistic one that drops him through the very trap door he seeks to avoid: making it sound as if "intuition" is just some kind of macho-mystical "gut feeling", rather than a mental process that runs parallel to conscious rational thought and that, if harnessed appropriately, can add enormous value to decision-making.
The book itself is a moderately well-designed program for applying the insights Klein shared in Sources of Power. Although it's full of problems (see below), I've never read anything like it, and the valuable bits are exceptionally valuable: strong, pragmatic, grounded advice on how to make the wispy world of intuition and "hunches" clear, concrete and useful.
Among the book's problems is that it doesn't know whether it wants to be a truly hands-on how-to manual - in which case it would have needed to be simplified and more action-oriented - or a research-driven exposition on how intuition can be used in the workplace - in which case the occasional how-to content is a jarring departure from the more illuminating case studies and research findings.
If you want to better understand and harness a whole hidden world of deeply insightful thinking - your and your colleagues' intuitions - there probably isn't a better book out there.
I just wish there was.
Another important book on the role of intuition in decision making.......2006-04-20
Klein does another excellent job in his continuing exposition of the importance of the role of intuition in practical, everyday decision making at home, on the job, under stressful conditions, as well as areas like economics. This statement sums up the book:"You will learn how to use your intuition to handle ambiguity in Chapter 8,How to Manage Uncertainty"(Klein,p.19;see also pp.119-120 for his emphasis on the role of confidence when faced by ambiguous or uncertain situations). The major criticism I have is that the earlier work in this area done by J M Keynes,Frank Knight and D Ellsberg is not mentioned anywhere in the book.Klein needs to incorporate this work into the corpus of his research, even if only for historical purposes.
Book Description
Shows how to carve out a new career path filled with passion and enthusians without leaving your organization for greener pastures elsewhere.
Customer Reviews:
Unlike other self-help books, I never had a "what a crock" reaction.......2006-06-26
So many people that are unhappy in their current jobs look outside at what appears to be the greener pastures. A large percentage eventually succumbs to the illusion of "it's better over there" and change jobs, only to find that there really is little difference. Many of the others remain at their job, happy in the security and stability, yet inwardly unhappy and resentful. The authors make a powerful case for another option, instead of looking over the fence, scan your current pasture with an idea of applying the proper fertilizer and periodic watering. In other words conduct a detailed examination of your current company and your passions and see if there is compatibility between your passions and what the company needs.
Options are that some job description needs to be changed, a current job needs to be done differently, a new one created or a job developed where there is no detailed description. The positions of the authors make an enormous amount of sense for employees and employers. The cost of losing a productive employee is enormous, so it makes economic sense for employers to be reasonably flexible in allowing employees to expand their horizons. Changing jobs is a traumatic experience that should be carefully thought out and often fails to generate an improvement in your emotional, psychological and professional well being. Therefore, if you can find or create something better where you are at, then by all means you should do so.
A self-help book that makes sense, contains nothing that generated the "what a crock" reaction when I read it, and has a lot of sound, practical advice, it should be read by everyone who is unhappy in their current job.
Career advice dispels myths.......2006-04-05
If you're frustrated with your career or if you've been hopping from company to company looking for the perfect job, this book is a must-read. Most jobs, authors Joe Frodsham and Bill Gargiulo believe - perhaps overoptimistically - already offer the possibility of satisfying work. Frodsham and Gargiulo provide a step-by-step guide to finding the things you truly love to do - your "passions." Once you understand these deep personal needs, then you can retool your job to meet them. The authors caution against switching organizations except as a last resort. We recommend this book to perennial job-seekers. If you absorb its information and do the internal work it advises, perhaps you, too, can attain "career wealth" right where you are. Hint: "career wealth" is not the same thing as earning a lot of money, just a lot of satisfaction.
Should Be Required Reading.......2005-09-09
"Make it Work" is a rare find. A book that gets right to the principles and practices that will transform your career and your life.
Practical and Powerful.......2005-07-22
This is a must read if you want to be successful in your organization! "Make it Work" cuts through the jargon and lies, and really enables you to apply principles for success. It's unleashed my heart and career, and I am forever grateful for it.
A great career guide.......2005-04-02
I picked it up and I couldn't put it down. It's got the right tools and advice for a person that career minded. It also made me realize that I can get the brio that I want out of my career, just where I am. This is a great read!

THERE IS A NEW TRUTH ABOUT BUSINESS STRATEGY: HE WHO MAKES THE RULES MAKES THE MONEY
A few savvy executives understand a vital but hidden truth about business in fiercely competitive markets: Making the rules of the game means the difference between winning and losing.
• Bill Gates has known this since he was nineteen, when he personally drafted his first licensing contract for a start-up company called Microsoft.
• Henry Ford learned it the hard way in the early days of the automobile industry when a powerful industry cartel tried to drive him out of business with a bogus patent.
• Sumner Redstone and Rupert Murdoch are both masters of this truth--and have led Viacom and News Corporation to sustained competitive success as a result. They are as comfortable in a courtroom as they are in a boardroom.
• Napster founder Shawn Fanning learned the lesson too late, only after incumbent recording companies in the music business had driven him from the market.
G. Richard Shell, an award-winning professor at one of the world’s leading business schools, brings the strategic insights of leaders like Gates, Ford, Redstone, and Murdoch into bold relief. Using stories drawn from both today's headlines and business history’s rich treasure trove, he shows exactly how to make the rules in your market and how to defend your interests when rivals beat you to it. What kind of rules? The rules that executives negotiate into contracts, lobby into new laws, litigate into court decisions, and persuade bureaucrats to write into regulatory standards.
Many managers run away from the rules, terrified of lawyers and afraid of political entanglements. The smartest executives know that the law is far too important to leave to the lawyers. They follow the example set by legally savvy corporate leaders: Learn the 10 percent of legal strategy that makes 90 percent of the difference in winning competitive battles.
Shell’s book will completely change the way you think about:
• Branding. What if your competitor tries to deny you the right to use your product name, as Coke did when it launched a worldwide campaign to stop Pepsi from using the word “cola”?
• Pricing Strategy. Wal-Mart is crushing you by discounting. How about writing rules to protect your profits? Gas retailers did this to stop Wal-Mart from selling discount gas in the United States.
• Crown Jewel Products. A giant competitor copies your hit products, markets them as its own, and laughs at your threatened lawsuit. What is your next step? Nintendo’s leaders faced a situation much like this when it battled Universal Studios over Nintendo’s first megahit game--Donkey Kong.
Rules that shape the way markets work are like the invisible electric fences that keep pets inside a yard. The businesses that write the rules can offer their products and services with relative freedom--while their rivals must stay inside the fence. Make the Rules or Your Rivals Will provides the ?rst comprehensive guide to this crucial, largely hidden aspect of corporate strategy.
Someone is going to write the rules in your market. Will it be you or your competitors?

THERE IS A NEW TRUTH ABOUT BUSINESS STRATEGY: HE WHO MAKES THE RULES MAKES THE MONEY
A few savvy executives understand a vital but hidden truth about business in fiercely competitive markets: Making the rules of the game means the difference between winning and losing.
- Bill Gates has known this since he was nineteen, when he personally drafted his first licensing contract for a start-up company called Microsoft.
- Henry Ford learned it the hard way in the early days of the automobile industry when a powerful industry cartel tried to drive him out of business with a bogus patent.
- Sumner Redstone and Rupert Murdoch are both masters of this truth—and have led Viacom and News Corporation to sustained competitive success as a result. They are as comfortable in a courtroom as they are in a boardroom.
- Napster founder Shawn Fanning learned the lesson too late, only after incumbent recording companies in the music business had driven him from the market.
G. Richard Shell, an award-winning professor at one of the world’s leading business schools, brings the strategic insights of leaders like Gates, Ford, Redstone, and Murdoch into bold relief. A framework to understand how law can help or hurt businesses.......2005-08-08
Richard Shell describes in a very organized and systematic way how legal moves can impact the firm's profitability for the short and long term. Legal is viewed as a key component of a strategy. Numerous relevant examples are provided by the author to demonstrate "law making in action". The perfect balance between theory and concrete examples contributes greatly to the clarity of the book.
Excellent book, so good that I had to read it twice.
Tough World, Good Book.......2004-09-16
There are many wise lessons in this book. In some ways, it has a zen or eastern quality in that it doesn't shy away from the hard reality of business. Instead of moralizing (so common today in the wake of the Enron, Worldcom messes) it says, this is the way it is, and this is how you can prosper in this type of an environment. It is like a survival book for a jungle fighter in the middle of a guerrilla war. Very useful and practical.
Include Legal Stratagies in Your Business Planning!.......2004-07-20
Dr. Shell has written an excellent book that opened my eyes regarding the central role legal strategies have played - and will continue to play - in American business. Indeed, the reality is that business is conducted in an environment with many constraints that need to be considered. Those business leaders treating legal questions in an ad hoc fashion or tactically may find that they have been out maneuvered by a competitor and left with few, or at least painfully expensive, options.
I especially appreciated Dr. Shell's writing style that illustrated the heart of the principles of law involved without bogging down in difficult legal language.
I believe this book should be required reading for emerging MBA students and new managers alike.
If you're not using your legal team as an active advisor to your business management group, you may revise that after reading this book.

Very readable & informative.......2004-07-14
Confession - I do the occasional work as an IT Advisor for a Global Lobbying group, and I wish I'd read this book a few years ago, I could have been doing my job better.
This is not an apologia for Lobbyists, it represents both sides of the fence. Some excellent case histories, such as when FDR re-scheduled Thanksgiving, and when Margarine had to be coloured pink.
It is not US-centric, it does contrast & compare many US & International customs, practices & procedures, and is comprehensive, covering many different Industries.
I liked the story in the Chapter on Litigation, how the Ancient Greeks discouraged Appeals : if you lost your appeal, you could be sold as a slave - nice idea we could do with today, to stop time-wasting.

How weird is weird?.......2007-04-04
Get Weird is a book full of not-so-weird but some practical ideas on how to make your company better-recognized, your employees happier, and your bottom line stronger. The author of Get Weird is someone who believes creativity in management comes from the HR department, so he is the kind of person who keeps "techies", as he calls them, at arms length and tosses some Hot Pockets in periodically. But, as author Putzier points out, people go to three-day seminars thinking that if they get one or two good ideas from it, it will be worth it. By those standards, everyone will find Get Weird worth it.
My favorite: Family Day, when everyone brings in their children/parents/significant others, so they can see what the company and their loved one does all day. Everyone gets to leave with swag.
Stupider idea, could only come from HR: Casual get togethers that involved forced mingling featuring probing personal questions of fellow employees.
We do it better: Having the CEO take the entire company to a matinee, complete with complimentary snacks for all.
The Real Deal.......2002-04-15
As an insatiable consumer of business books, I can confidently say that "Get Weird!" is the most engaging, entertaining, yet useful business book I've ever read. It's chock full of great ideas guaranteed to make your workplace the one people on the outside want to get into. Putzier's humorous writing style and knack for knowing a great idea when he sees one make this one of the most enjoyable and beneficial business books you'll ever buy. I've recommended it to hundreds of people and will continue to for the rest of my career.
Good conversational thought-provoker.......2001-10-29
When John Putzier was a child, his mother told him he was weird. For most kids, being told they were weird might be traumatizing. Not John. He prided himself on being weird-different. Over the years of his career in human resource consulting, professional speaking, and college teaching, he has prided himself on being weird-just a little bit different, off-beat. The power of being off-beat is encapsulated in a quotation I learned in my growing-up years, "It's the usual thing, done in the unusual way, that captures the attention of the world."
John certainly has captured the attention of the world with his work. And how he shows us how to make this happen in our lives as executives, managers, and human resource professionals.
Weirdness is doing things differently. The results can be very positive, both in your confidence and in the results you can achieve. Putzier spends the first part of the book explaining this and setting up the reader to receive and consider 100 thought-provoking ideas. This section is titled Tapping Your Natural Weirdness, aka [also known as] Creative Thinking and Problem-Solving. The double title theme continues through the other parts of the book, enabling the reader to comfortably transition between Putzier's weird titles and terminology that will be more familiar.
One hundred ideas are presented in the balance of the book, categorized in seven sections. Titles of those sections are Weird Ideas to Win Today's Talent, aka Recruitment; Weird Ideas for the Care and Feeding of Today's Talent, aka Retention; Weird Ideas for Changing Your Company, aka Fun & Games with a Purpose and a Profit; Weird Ideas for Perks, Pay, and Pats on the Back, aka Recognition and Incentives; Weird Ideas for Educating Today's Talent, aka Training and Development; and Weird Ideas for Enhancing Your Company Image, aka Sales, Service, Public Relations & Personal Satisfaction. Idea 101 is in Part 8, where the author suggests that you have other ideas in your head that you can add to his list. Remember, Putzier is endeavoring to stimulate your thinking, not just give you pat answers or magic pills.
There are several additional features that add value to this book. The Table of content includes a phrase under each idea listing to quickly explain what the idea entails. An alphabetical list of ideas appears at the end of the book as an unusual, but helpful, index.
The book is easy to read and serves as a fine read-through in addition to a good reference book for follow-up.
Great insights--full of meat and fun to read.......2001-06-02
You will very quickly realize that this person is a veteran who is not talking theory. There is very serious substance and great ideas that can make a difference in the workplace.
I must add that it was delightful to read in terms of being a fun book I did not want to put down.
Worthwhile investment of time!

Step-by-step guidance in making a claim and collecting from the insurance companies that refuse to pay legitimate claims.
Customer Reviews:
This book is not about getting insurance companies to pay.......2004-04-16
This book is about why you should hire this attorney to represent you. There is virtually no help here if you want to do it yourself.
This is a great little book that could save your life........1999-08-18
I've read this book cover to cover, and it is both highly informative and easy to digest. Shernoff shows why he is preeminent in his field as a consumer lawyer, and his book is designed to help people avoid the necessity of going to court. Reading this book could save your life.
Good presentation of consumer issues in claims processing.......1999-08-03
Ralph Nader's Foward to this book is a well written, concise presentation of insurance companies evolution from "fiduciaries" to "profit centers". It describes the ineffectiveness of state insurance regulatory agencies and how the lobbying power of the industry managed to secure legislation that circumvented the US Supreme Court ruling that the industry was an interstate business subject to federal regulation. The remainder of the book contains simple, clear explanations of how the claims process works and suggestions for dealing with that process. There are also descriptions of the ordeals that claimants endure when "bad faith" practices of insurance companies force legitimate claims into litigation.
Big talk, no action.......1996-12-21
