Book Description
Recent studies show that life skills coaching, executive coaching and business coaching are all effective ways of achieving sustainable growth, change and development in an individual, group or organisation.
The Coaching at Work Toolkit is the first comprehensive, practical resource for coaches in the use of the theories, tools, techniques and practices that affect learning and change. This book offers coaching tools and psychology-based techniques and is a much-needed guide to understanding the practice of coaching and applying the theories and language associated with it.
The employment of life skills coaching, executive coaching and business coaching is being heralded as the way to create organisations of the future. Anyone interested in achieving their best and staying ahead of the competition should read this book. Through the use of case studies, practical instructions and application guidelines, the authors have provided models, principles and techniques that enable professional coaches to achieve breakthrough results.
For the past ten years the authors, first as practitioners and then as educators, have worked closely with colleagues across the globe to develop coaching techniques that produce positive, measurable, lasting change.
This book builds upon the success of the authors' first general coaching reference The Complete Guide to Coaching at Work. This title focused on the nature of coaching, coaching models and frameworks, and the competencies for successful coaches.
Suzanne Skiffington and Perry Zeus have trained hundreds of coaches around the world. Through their internationally renowned coach training school, 1 to 1 Coaching School they have worked with established and new coaches, professionals and managers/leaders of organisations, consultants, groups and the academic community.
Customer Reviews:
Great toolkit ! .......2007-01-10
This a good resource for workplace coaches. It contains a lot of background and theory, and also has a whole range of exercises and tools that can assist the coaching process - a good buy !
A great resource for new and established coaches.......2006-04-10
This book is a remarkably comprehensive resource for coaches. This great book examines the nature of change as well as the role of the coach as a change agent. It clearly articulates the stages of the coaching process. There is a wealth of assessments, profiles and numerous practical coaching tools. The authors (internationally renowned coach trainers) also discuss the role of the coach's personality, coaching techniques and how to use them range from self-awareness exercises, problem-solving techniques and journalling. It is research-based, thorough and very readable. Highly recommended!.
good basic overview of simple coaching approaches.......2006-03-18
This a useful book which - although not a complete "toolkit" by any means - does provide a useful overview, and the beginning coach will find this helpful.
I found the authors' continuing hard-sell of their own training programs more than a little wearisome. After all, I paid for a book - not a sales pitch. Far too much ego in places, but still worth buying.
Ground-breaking reference book!.......2003-11-04
The 'Toolkit' is a highly professional, yet easy-to-understand reference book and includes a complete and very helpful glossary. The authors are the most respected coaching educators in the business world today. The professional coaching industry has evolved dramatically over the last two years and bears little resemblance to its fuzzy predecessor of the nineties. A lot of serious research and work has gone into this groundbreaking text book, and serious personal and organizational change can come from the use of the book.
The book brings together a complete listing of the major skills and techniques for organizational and personal coaches, and offers guidelines and instructions on how to employ them. The Toolkit provides processes, protocols, assessment instruments, forms, charts and checklists and examines the management practices of coaching. The text also details the changing nature and evolution of coaching, such as the increasing importance of specialization. To date, most available coaching books detail the standard practices of goal setting, action planning and some coaching interventions but they do not offer too many actual techniques that facilitate the desired change. Achieving measurable, sustainable outcomes isn't a matter of simplistic goal setting, personality profiling and cheerleading but requires the skilful use of validated, proven behavioral change methods and learning tools grounded in the behavioral sciences. In this book, these invaluable techniques are blue-printed and discussed, and then presented alongside case studies and exercises.
The success of any coaching program is dictated by the program's resources depth, scientific validity and measurability. This invaluable, well written and very accessible reference provides exact processes and details for achieving successful coaching outcomes and will find a place on the bookshelves of many coaches, consultants, trainers, HR professionals, learning institutions and corporations.

Customer Reviews:
Books this simple depress me.......2005-02-28
Anyone who is a facilitator of learning should already know this stuff, and anyone who is a faciltator but doesn't know this stuff should be perusing more robust reference material and taking some courses.
Disappointed.......2001-12-06
Very easy reading material. This book is for the beginner; someone who has absoulutely never taught anyone before and who had not chosen teaching as a profession. Anyone who has instructed for 6 months or more will already know most of what is in this book. I was disappointed. I was anticipating new concepts and ideas.
Wonderful!.......2001-06-07
Eric Jensen's 1000 suggestions are all practical and common sense. As a presenter, new ideas are always welcome and one certainly gets their money's worth from this book. The games, activities and energizers were very useful. This book is a must for all trainers and presenters!
useful and thoughtful tips.......2001-04-04
This book literally listed more than 1000 tips and tools, covering every detail of presentation. You get "10 Hot Tips for Flip Charts and White Boards", "46 Ideas: Starting Off on the Right Foot"... The author is meticulously thoughtful. First read "5 ways to get the most out of this book" and then study the detailed Table of Contents. From there you can select what would be of interest to you. A lot seems to be common sense. Yet it is still good to be reminded, e.g. avoid: starting late, or starting with an apology, or an equipment failure. This is not a book for reading from cover to cover. But it is valuable for presentors or trainers to come back to it again and again.
Powerful Book of Helps and Ideas.......2000-08-24
This book is a powerhouse of ideas and tips for making your next training workshop/seminar outstanding. Nitty-gritty basics as well as great tips and recommendations. Its easy-read format makes it accessible and you can focus on areas where you need to strengthen your presentation/training skills. I haven't seen another book that puts so much USEABLE information and help into one small, inexpensive book. I'm ordering multiple copies for those I train.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent Resource!.......2005-08-08
This book is a tremendous resource for anyone who does teambuilding! Included are activities that can be done on a "shoestring" budget as well as some more advanced initiatives. Especially helful is a section with plans on building props for team building activities! A few "old classic" activities are included, but it mostly covers new activities.
WOW!!!.......2001-12-06
I've worked with high school groups and some corporate groups in outdoor adventure education for more than 12 years and this book would have been most helpful earlier in my career. This is a MUST BUY for anyone who in involved in training or education. The vaule of the book is so much higher than the acutal price. Once again. This is a MUST BUY for your personal or business libaray.
Useful and Useable.......2001-12-05
Possibly a top five choice for those beginning an experiential-adventure education, resource book library.
Very good written and visual descriptions. In addition, the authors focused a great deal on assisting the reader in identifying and locating the resources and tools necessary for each activity and initiative. The detailed information is useful for both purchasing and creating additions to your equipment bag of tricks. This feature alone has been very attractive to those browsing through the book at our introductory level, facilitator workshops.
The book features a good blend of low prop, portable activities along with less-portable intiatives. Also, helpful variations of activities such as the spider web and bull ring are provided.
You may find less expensive, activity books, but this remains an excellent value as a quality resource book.
For those looking to begin a library - this is one of my top five recommendations. If you are an experienced facilitator, you will likely find good information, but you may not find the book as valuable as a less experienced facilitator.
The best single volume.......2001-04-30
I have worked on challenge courses for nearly ten years and used much of what I do there in my other life as a middle school teacher. This is the best single volume I've seen. I was thrilled to read up on some truly new ideas as well as most of the tried and true stalwarts. Too often I've bought a book only to find that it is a repackaging of ideas that have been around a while. There is some of this, but plenty of innovation. The descriptions are clear and Caine has provided step-by-step instructions for making all of the equipment described in the book. They also comprehensively list other books, equipment vendors, organizations, etc.
If you know someone who's budget allows only one book, this is a great place to start.
Almost as good as in person.......2000-03-18
Jim Cain recently conducted a workshop for our ACA group. He mentioned that the book came about because he was giving out a thick stack of hand-outs at his workshops that were darn close to a book. So he put them together and created this book. The energy and spirit that Jim shows in his workshops is clearly reflected in this book. Although nothing can really replace an "in-person" demonstration of the activities, this book gives clear explainations and examples in a "how to" format. Along with a section on how to build many of the activities with supplies easily available at many home improvement centers. There are activities for youth, schools, camps, corporate; large budget or small budget. This book is an excellent investment.

Product Description
Developing Literacy & Workplace Skills: Teaching for 21st Century Employment is a research-based curriculum that has been used with great success for 14 years in Arizona schools. More than 1,600 at-risk high school students and 550 adult students have benefited from the program. Over 65% of the program s graduates have continued on to some form of higher education beyond high school a significant accomplishment given that Arizona has the highest dropout rate in the United States, and the county in which the test school is located has a 62% graduation rate. In the pilot program, students made average gains of two grade-level equivalents per year in reading comprehension and phonetic analysis post-test scores, resulting in average gains of six grade-years over the three years that students are in the program. Students written communication skills have often improved so dramatically that it is difficult to believe that writing samples from the beginning and end of a school year were written by the same students. In addition, students have become independent, self-directed learners and effective team players. Their self-confidence soars, and they become more poised. In addition, discipline problems are extremely rare in the program because of its emphasis on personal responsibility. The curriculum is a three-year program for initiation at the high-school level (from grades 10 to 12). The six-semester curriculum is designed around three fundamental changes in the traditional classroom: students assume the role of employees, the teacher assumes the role of employer, and the classroom becomes a professional office setting and an innovative learning environment.

I love this book!.......2007-06-12
I teach ESL to immigrants in the US, and this book is terrific for teaching practical everyday English for real life situations, plus alerting students to the fraud and scams that anyone with shaky language ability can fall victim to. The chapters cover such topics as telemarketing, get rich quick schemes, insurance, dealing with the law, finding a job, resumes, travel, etc. Last in the series, #4 is an upper intermediate book; I haven't used the others, but if they're half as good they're well worth it.

Excellent book for true beginners.......2003-01-27
This book is very useful for giving adult students with very little English knowledge opportunity for in-class talking time with other students. Seems to go slowly, but even the more advanced students enjoy it, as there are opportunities to challenge them, as well. Gives students a chance to teach each other the English, in situations where I used to spend a half an hour talking to them as they dozed off. It has revolutionized my ESL classes--they are more enjoyable for both the students and myself.
