Customer Reviews:
THE ADULT LEARNER, SIXTH EDITION.......2006-02-25
This book was in excellent shape. I received it sooner than I expected.
A classic, but it does not use its own advice........2005-07-03
Malcolm S. Knowles is the founder of the theory of Andragogy (Adult Education), and I agree with him on many of the points he makes.
The problem is that the book seems to have been written for academics to accept Malcolm's theories, and not written for students who wanted to learn to be better teachers in Adult Education.
Unless you have to use this book for a textbook for a class, I would not buy it as your first introduction to Adult Education. I'm not sure which book I would buy, but someone must have written a better one to actually learn the subject!
Andragogy for the 21st century.......2005-03-02
Since the term "andragogy" was first coined, several theoretical schools have developed around the topic of adult learning. This book provides a context for Knowles' ideas about andragogy and demonstrates the relevance of his ideas in the 21st century.
Unreadable.......2004-02-08
This book was the text for an adult learning course, and all 300+ students judged the book to be incomprehensible. So many complaints were received that the instructor apologized, saying it was the only book the school could find. There is good information in this book, but you need dynamite to unearth it. I have a better than average vocabulary, but I had to keep a dictionary by my side as I read, and even then I found words from the text for which I could find no definition. Some chapters had to be read 4 times before I understood the authors' message. Reading this book was a guarantee for a nap or a headache. Please, somebody stop this book before it kills again!
very comprehensive look at adult learning theory.......2001-05-11
This book is like a one-stop shopping guide to Adult education. It is so comprehensive that I doubt it leaves out one development in the history of adult education. My only warning is that the opening chapters which basically trace many theories of learning (both adult and traditional) are hard to get through -- it reads more like a research paper that summarizes every major educational theory since the beginning of time. But, if you don't want to know that much, you can simply skip these chapters and get right to the meat of the adult learning theories which are more appropos. For those who need a quick primer on learning theories, you'll love the first few chapters for their abundance of quick summary information. A useful guide to adult education.

E-Learning and the Science of Instruction.......2007-01-03
(My first language is Spanish, so excuse any misspells) I have been working on delivery management, and now development, of online courses ind Guatemala since 1999, for a private university, international training organizations and government. Among all my research to learn about the topic and improve my work, this piece of literature is among the very best. It bases its conclussions on research results, it places the human being (who is the target of e-learning programs) in the center of the process and, based on that, and other aspects, it provides valuable information on what works and what doesn't, concerning teaching methodologies for online teaching and/or training programs. Though, it does not concentrate or cover management systems for e-learning program delivery, another very important issue for successful distance programs. The book is great, simple and clear. Bright!!
Valuable resource........2006-11-11
Ruth Colvin Clark continues to put out valuable resouces for those interested in multimedia education. This would be a valuable addition to any library.
Great for eLearning Designers and Reviewers.......2006-08-01
With many years of experience in building eLearning and educational software I was looking for a reference to back up my "I know it when I see it" thoughts on good and bad courseware. This book met or exceeded my expectations. I like that the chapters are shorter and that the observations are backed up with study results. The References section is a valuable collection of eLearning studies in itself. There are also useful checklists included with the book.
There are some newer technologies such as Wikis and Blogs that are not covered in the book, but since the authors focus on proven techniques with studies to back them up it's unlikely such technologies would receive a lot of coverage at this point.
If you're responsible for designing or reviewing courseware this is a very good nuts-and-bolts reference.
A book that every person in this field need to use.......2005-06-04
e-Learning and the Science of Instruction is a must have for anybody that is already a pro, or just starting out at designing web-based instruction. The authors give outstanding guidance for every step of the way, from explaining theories to the best way to set up your web site. It shows excellent illustrations of what to do, as well as what NOT to do. This book is a tool that every one in the business shouldn't be without.
Excellent practical book for practitioners.......2005-05-16
I have been designing and developing e-Learning for 6 years and this book has been wonderful to help remind me of some basics, teach me a few things, and give excellent practical advice as I continue developing. I am not one to read textbooks or non-fiction but I find this writing style very easy to read and I am able to easily apply the concepts. If you have never developed e-Learning but are studying the topic in school, this book may come across as dry and hard to read. Hold on to it and pick it up after you've been developing for a year or so and I'm sure you'll find it as useful as I have.

CLA Review Manual: A Practical Guide to CLA Exam Preparation.......2007-05-22
Good and comprehensive. I have no problem with the substantive value, however, the finish of the pages was raged and not trimmed properly. One part was extended way beyond the cover. Is this because Amazon gives a discount? Not something I appreciate in a book I will keep in my library for life. The prior issue was a better-quality product.
A great review manual and reference book.......2000-06-07
This book was my primary source when I was preparing for the CLA exam. Coherent, organized and thoughtful, it is a "must buy" for CLA candidates. Until my book was borrowed (and not returned) by another legal assistant, the manual served as a handy reference manual in my practice.

Book Description
Training Ain't Performance is a whimsical, entertaining, and solidly written book that takes on the subject of human performance in the workplace. From its first chapter, Show Me the Money, to its concluding chapters, Hit or Myth: Separating Fact from Workplace Performance Fiction, readers are gently guided toward an understanding of human performance improvement and how to use it for real organizational value.
Customer Reviews:
Concise, clear, and readable introduction to HPT/HPI.......2004-10-06
Like the other reviewers, I find this book to be exceptionally clear and well-written, and provides a great introduction to the key concepts of human performance improvement (also called human performance technology). It's deceptively simple, because the book has a rigorous intellectual base, and cites key theories, authors and research in the field (not surprising, because Stolovitch and Keeps also co-edited the definitive handbook in the field).
I used the book as a text in my graduate course in human performance technology. It offers many benefits as a textbook. It's readable, so it invites students to read it. It's interactive as well, which makes the reading experience more of a learning session, rather than just an absorption session.
Through these activities, the book makes the abstract and admittedly difficult-to-grasp concepts of human performance improvement concrete.
It also helps me model a key performance concept: build on small successes to create effective performance. Because this book is accessible, my students--many of whom are new to both the field and graduate education--can demonstrate success early in the program and that inspires them to greater success.
Ain't Is!.......2004-09-30
Stolovitch and Keeps have again (after their wildly popular Telling Ain't Training)demystified all of the processes and procedures for moving your organization from one that is mainly concerned about training to one that is focused on performance. Training is an activity. Performance is an activity coupled with the result of that activity and this book provides all of the methodology for getting valued results for your organization. Its fast paced style and fun to do exercises will make this book the one book on your professional book shelf that just ain't going to gather dust.
A must read.......2004-09-23
This book gives trainers and managers the broader skills and knowledge they need to provide solutions (beyond training) to improve workforce performance. It is easy to read, practical, and has exercises and case studies to reinforce learning. Everyone on my team is reading - and using - it.
A Great Read and Resource.......2004-09-22
Once again, Harold and Erica have co-authored a book which is practical, content rich and great fun to read. This book is a "must read" for anyone who wants to learn more about training, about performance and how they are different. All the worksheets, case examples and key points that are identified ensure this book will be a valued resource and not just a book to store on the shelf.
Top Performing Book!.......2004-09-10
This book provides practical ideas and insights about how to best manage performance in the workplace and best invest your training dollars. Too often, we use training as the panacea to resolve workplace performance issues. Harold explains when training is really necessary and when other interventions are best suited to resolve those issues. This book should be read by business owners and managers, not just by trainers or human resource professionals.

Great!.......2007-04-02

A road map for talent development ..........2005-03-13
From strategic visioning through measuring success, this practical workbook provides tools, guidelines and even a dozen templates in the enclosed CD. Mr. Wheeler shares best practices, from years of experience and research. With the lead from product advances shrinking, human talent will become a major competitive differentiator. I highly recommend for anyone challenged to support your organization's success through talent development.
A must have workbook........2005-03-10
If you are involved in setting up or work for a corporate university, run, don't walk to your nearest book seller and purchase this workbook. Long overdue, The Corporate University Workbook, written in plan, easy to understand English, walks the reader through eleven chapters packed with business oriented explanations, strategies, checklists, exercises, case studies and rationales for designing, building and maintaining a world class corporate university. Destined to become a classic in the field, The Corporate University Workbook should be required reading and within arms reach of anyone responsible for establishing or fine tuning their organization's corporate university.
Philip McGee, Ed.D., THRD, Clemson University
A Must Read if You Want to Build a Corporate University.......2005-02-20
Kevin Wheeler makes it clear early on in his book that successful corporate universities must go beyond traditional training. Learning goes far beyond training, incorporating a wide range of informal learning processes and activities. This differentiates this book from much of what has been written in the past about corporate universities--focusing on mostly course-oriented training. Wheeler takes the reality of broad-based learning in organizations into account and provides a very detailed and practical guide for building a successful and flexbible corporate university. The book contains lots of templates and practical lists with questions and issues that must be addressed by someone building a corporate university. Each chapter begins with a review of an unsuccessful and a successful example of corporate universities, making it clear that success is by no means guaranteed. But the probability of success will no doubt be much higher for those who do their homework and not only read this book but complete the numerous exercises that Wheeler has carefully prepared to assist those ready to build a corporate university meant to transform an organization into a 21st century learning organization.

Readers also will find that this teaching tool becomes a handy reference manual in the professional setting.
Customer Reviews:
For beginners.......2007-05-12
I purchased this book for a class (legal technology) which turned out to be as remedial as this book. While I believe it could be very useful for someone who is not used to navigating a computer, it really insults the intelligence of those of us who have grown up with technology. This book does have a few useful tips that clarify certain aspects of Concordance and other legal programs, but I find it easier to explore an unfamiliar program on my own without the tedious step-by-step process Roper uses in his lessons.
Informative, but............2006-11-07
I purchaed this book for a Paralegal class. I had two very bad experiences with the book. First, the first copy I received had no Appendix in it, so I had to send it back. It was unfortunate, as I needed the Appendix to do an assignment. Secondly, the software that was provided was expired when I tried to load it into my laptop to do homework. I called the publishing company and they promised to send me a new disk; two weeks later and I still have not received it.
I will keep it as a reference source, but I hope that another book will be written for future students. If you do not need it for a class, PLEASE look for another book.
Great learning tool.......2005-03-24
I bought this book for a legal assistant class and I enjoyed it. I learned a lot. It's hard to learn computers from a book - but not this one. The book comes with software and has tutorials and exercises that accompany the software. My class also liked the fact that there are tons of practical applications for how computers are actually used by practicing paralegals and legal secretaries in the book. Also, when it comes to litigation support - one of the most difficult legal computer applications to master - it was fantastic. It comes with three different litigation support programs, including Summation. Summation is fairly involved to learn and the book, tutorials, exercises and software did a good job of teaching this to me. I am confident now in my ability to do basic litigation support. The chapter on using the Internet to do legal and factual research was also excellent.
I would definately buy this again!.......2005-03-18
This book is essential for anyone working in a law office. Computers are used in nearly every aspect of working in a law firm. The book is huge - nearly 700 pages - and it covers every main type of program used in a law office. It comes with software, and lots of exercises and I thought it was very easy to read and straight forward. It covers hard topics like litigation support and Access databases in a way that I could understand without totally going over my head. The book covers both entry level and advanced topics. For example in the word processing chapter the Word tutorial had 7 lessons that got progressively more difficult, starting with basic word processing and ending with mail merges and creating tables of authorities.
Highly Recommended.......2005-03-14
I think this is a fabulous book. It comes with demonstration versions of 5 legal software programs including three litigation support programs, a time and billing program and a case management program. There were a number of in-depth, hands-on exercises for each program, so I really got to learn about each type of program by using it. Also, although I have used Access, Word, Excel and Powerpoint before, I liked the fact that there were in-depth exercises for learning legal applications for each of these programs. This is a very practical book.

Yet another Learning Styles Model!.......2007-09-13
Sharon Bowman has come a long way. This is one of her early books. A more recent book The Ten-Minute Trainer: 150 Ways to Teach it Quick and Make it Stick! (Pfeiffer Essential Resources for Training and HR Professionals) is SO much better.
This one is modeled on the metaphor of a flight plan, and gets a tad hokey. She also introduces a new learning style analysis, which I found to be pretty weak. She does have some great ideas in here, (which are also repeated in the new book) and as a trainer, you can never miss out on new ideas.
Sharon is a creative professional and teaches participatory learning. She uses a lot of creative techniques, and writes her books in the style she teaches people to use. Active learning creates retained information and a fun experience. For the money, you're better off with The Ten Minute Trainer.
Excellent book on how to give brain friendly trainings.......2004-01-10
I love this book on training because unlike most other books of its type it doesn't go into long winded theories of learning that are not necessary to be good at teaching. It also gives a methodology that can be applied to any kind of training.
The small section on learning styles is relevant because it is argued that your own learning preference will affect the way in which you teach. When this was pointed out it was somewhat of a revelation to me. I realised that I had been training in my own learning style and not training towards the preferred style of the other three types of learner.
The best thing about this book for me was the fact that it gives you a practical guide to how you can incorporate the four learning styles into your trainings along with example exercises for each. I have now adopted this method in all of my trainings and it has enhanced the learning of my students and also their enjoyment of the courses!
On the downside for me is the fact that Sharon uses the metaphor of learning to fly throughout the book and I found it was wearing a bit thin with me by the end. However, that might just be my type 2 (fact driven) learning style showing itself.
All in all an excellent, practical and very readable book on training which will quickly enable you to apply its principles. Its a book that 'walks the talk' . Thanks Sharon.
The Field Guide to Giving It and Getting It.......2003-04-27
This book reviews the four basic styles of learning (peacemaker, truthkeeper, solutionseeker, and risktaker) and teaching (getting connected, sharing the wealth, making it happen, and celebrating the success).
The format holds true to the title: that is, basic practical and down-to-earth advice and techniques that you can implement immediately. It's a user guide to understanding your own learning and teaching styles, as well as the styles of your learners/students. Bowman reminds us that we are all students and teachers in our lives. Bowman uses humor and a consistent metaphor of the "flight plan," fleshing out her premise with interesting examples, animation, and analogies. Bowman says, "The style map is a metaphor for life itself." (p. 158)
The author addresses the emotional, mental, physical, and spiritual aspects of all of us. I think this holistic approach makes real good sense because you will stretch as a teacher and embrace all of your students' learning styles.
Bowman includes "flight kits" for each teaching style- real-life activities you can use in your learning environment right away.
What Style!.......2002-01-22
This book offers a wealth of information about the people in my workshops - and how to use styles information to reach each one. Wonderful, clear balance between theory and application - I can use her ideas in every session I do. Thanks!
WOW!!!!.......2002-01-06
A quick read and full of ready-to-use ideas. A great reference for interactive teaching strategies and why they work. My classroom teachers should have read this book.

Should be required reading for LE and Military personnel.......2007-09-25
I didn't know what to expect from this book when I purchased it. I simply wanted to read the thoughts and ideas of a well respected and highly experienced leader. What I got out of this book is simply amazing. Howe has an uncanny ability to get right down to the core issues. He does this through a little bit of intrigue, a ton of valuable insight, and a bit of humor on top. He has that rare ability to get his point across without sounding like a preacher. Through my experiences in the military and Law Enforcement I can more clearly see how leadership should be approached. I believe that my abilities greatly improved due to the insight I gained from this book. This should be required reading for all military and law enforcement personnel.
Howe does not disapoint.......2007-08-23
Should be a standard on LE trainers bookshelf for constant review, study & strive to match the standards within.
No Punches Pulled.......2007-07-08
A brilliant evaluation of lessons learned on the battle field. This book is useful for anyone who finds themselves in a leadership role or who desires to be in leadership. MSG Howe takes real world encounters from his personal experience and cites examples of what went right and what went wrong. A must for the library.
Excellent.......2007-06-27
This book addresses issues that have plagued men in combat situations for years. This should be required reading for all members of the U.S. Military and law enforcement, and on all of the professional reading lists.
Solid thoughts from a BTDT operator.......2007-06-06
Good read. I especially liked the "stories" of previous missions or encounters before each section. A lot of his thoughts and suggestions, to me, seem to be common sense. But after being in the desert myself, clearly its uncommon sense.
Worth multiple reads, if not a study.

Book Description
Patterned after Strunk and White's classic The Elements of Style, this reference concisely summarizes the substantial existing research on the art and science of mentoring. The Elements of Mentoring reduces this wealth of published material on the topic to the fifty most important and pithy truths for supervisors in all fields. These explore what excellent mentors do, what makes an excellent mentor, how to set up a successful mentor-proteacute;geacute; relationship, how to work through problems that develop between mentor and proteacute;geacute;, what it means to mentor with integrity, and how to end the relationship when it has run its course. Succinct and comprehensive, this is a must-have for any mentor or mentor-to-be.

good book.......2006-01-06
i skimmed through this book and was very impressed. it pointed out to me how i should mentor as well as pointing out how i should be mentored. i learned what has been missing in the mentoring that i receive. i am hoping that it will help me ask for the type of mentoring that i want and need.
The Perfect Gift.......2004-05-07
This is a valuable book. These authors have managed to distill a very broad topic into easily applied principles. As both a mentor and protege I am grateful for this book. I am now ordering this book as a gift for all my favorite mentors in my Harvard post-doctoral program. I recommend you do the same for those menotors in your life.
Already The Classic Guide to Mentoring.......2004-05-06
As the Chief Operating Officer for a large medical technology company, I have mentored many junior professionals for years. But until now, I've never found a guide on the art of mentoring that lays out the specific details and skills mentors should master. Imagine my delight at discovering a short but comprehensive resource for everything a new mentor should learn and a seasoned mentor should reconsider. The authors promise a "nuts and bolts" guide to doing mentoring based on the writing style of the classic "Elements of Style" guide to grammar. The authors do not disappoint on this score. Amazingly, they manage to cover all of the key ingredients to outstanding mentoring without resorting to stories or wordy narrative. In reading the "Elements of Mentoring," one gets the sense that he or she is gleaning the distilled wisdom of two master mentors. The book is brief but jam-packed with the crucial details of starting a good mentorship, managing it successfully, and even bringing it through difficult transitions. I was impressed that the authors (both college profs) used lots of research in putting the book together (see the references) without cluttering the pages with it. I am not a frequent Amazon reviewer, but after reading this thorough but brief resource, recommending it to several colleagues, and pulling it down from my shelf already to re-read a section relevant to one of my current subordinates, I felt compelled to recommend it to other managers and leaders. One of the few books on developing junior talent I've been glad I paid for.

Book Description
Mastering the art of problem solving takes more than proficiency with basic calculations; it requires understanding how people use information, recognizing the importance of ideology, learning the art of storytelling, and acknowledging the important distinction between facts and values. Intended for professors, managers, entrepreneurs, and students, this guide addresses these and other essential skills. With clear prose, quotations, and exercises for solving problems in the real world, this book serves as an ideal training manual for those who are new to or intimidated by quantitative analysis and an excellent refresher for those who have more experience but want to improve the quality of their data, the clarity of their graphics, and the cogency of their arguments.

Delightful excursion in thinking about how to think.......2007-04-20
It is different from, and for many purposes, better than a science textbook. More than enough science books have been written, but TNIK is better because it teaches readers how to think about the data on which science is built. Its fresh approach to understanding the natural world as well as human-made systems is a noteworthy improvement over the plug-in, grind-out perspective that academic classes typically offer and that turns off students.
A great primer and reference to fall back on.......2005-11-04
While no doubt I've heard many of nuggets contained in the book over the course of my high school and college days, I found Koomey's book a pleasurable read and useful synthesis of approaches and tips for completing quality research and analyses. Internalizing Koomey's advice is going to help most readers be more discriminating consumers of published research and better authors of their own research. It's a reference source I've already gone back to myself in just a few weeks and a great training resource for new consultants my company hires.
Interesting & valuable, though philosophical > statistical .......2005-02-01
I expected the author to talk much about statistical analysis and related "technical stuff". I had been very wrong. In fact, the book can be regarded as a warning to common people about the "irrelevancy" and "inaccuracy" of data or information we encounter or process so that we can perform better analysis of on our own. As from pg 197, "of primary importance from this book are the following lessons:-"
- Don't be intimidated by anyone (esp those know-it-alls)
- Be a critical thinker
- Don't confuse what's countable with what really counts
- Get organized
- Question authority
- Dig into the numbers
- Focus on the essential
- Document, document, document
- Use the internet
- Remember that others don't care as much about your work as you do
- Synthesis follows analysis
In short, a good read. Dont miss it.
p.s. I like the following quotes from the book very much. (The author did use over 31 quotes with at least one for each chapter)
Just because I use a study to refute another study does not mean my study is right. It just means I believe it. Caveat Emptor. - Cynthia Crossen
Whether or not someone else knows it all isn't really relevant; the only thing that's relevant is what you know and what you do. - Robert Ringer
not for the technically minded.......2003-01-18
This is an entertaining and well written book on some of the do's and don'ts of data analysis. To quote from Dr. Beers review below, "The main emphasis is on the art of data interpretation." Indeed there are useful tools here for performing sanity checks and for asking critical questions about all sorts of data collections. ... The examples are, at best, sketchy and few in number. The anectodes are amusing but not terribly informative. I would have much preferred more concrete examples and further discussion on some technical matters. ....
Great treatise on critical thinking and organization.......2002-12-18
"Turning Numbers Into Knowledge: Mastering the Art of Problem Solving" should be required reading for anyone engaged in producing, reading, or analysing information. Based on the title one might assume that I mean numerical information, but that is not the case at all. The basic principles, such as how to sift through information and the importance of documentation of sources, are important parts of any information product. In fact, except for the sections on graphs, tables, normalizing data and a few others, the rest of the book (fully at least three quarters of it) is dedicated to determining what constitutes good information, good techniques, good analysis, good documentation, etc. This is a book on problem solving techniques and analysis of the information products of others.
Filled with useful tools and tips for problem solving under real-life situations it is one of the most useful books available. "Turning Numbers Into Knowledge: Mastering the Art of Problem Solving" is a masterful work in the area of critical analysis and a highly recommended read for anyone involved in creating or using information of any kind.
