There Really Are Ways to Work Smart.......2002-03-16
The Successful Woman's Guide to Working Smart demonstrates over and over the types of challenges and opportunities a working woman or, for that matter man, meets in ordinary business life. Caitlin Williams uses examples from real people that acknowledge time pressures and conflicting priorities. Her questions for reflection are simple, yet profound, and can bring to light personal obstacles that are holding us back.
This book is deceptively easy to read and can be read in small bites. Yet, each page has some nugget of wisdom that can be put to use. Ms. Williams takes into consideration that many women were not raised to advocate for themselves. She teaches us how to overcome shyness about promoting ourselves and gives practical suggestions for taking actions that aren't aggressive, but help us feel more participative in our workplaces.
Some of the strengths Ms. Williams writes about are already developed in many women. In this book, we can learn how to build on those strengths even more and feel and act more confident in the future. Probably the quality I like best about this book is it's premise that women are good professional people that don't need to be 'fixed.' I especially recommend this book for women beginning their worklife, whether young or after another life stage. It can give you a good jump start.
Definitely Worth Sharing.......2002-02-09

Equipped with real-life stories, the "Successful Woman's Guide to Working Smart," sheds light upon the challenges that women face on a daily basis in the workplace. The personal assessments create a workshop feel, while helping you to recognize your strengths and identify areas that need work. This book is essential in today's world where women are constantly striving to achieve a sense of balance without making sacrifices within their careers.
Invaluable reading for any woman.......2001-12-14
In Successful Woman's Guide To Working Smart: 10 Strengths That Matter Most, Caitlin Williams draws upon contemporary research, keen insights into current workplace realities, as well as the professional and personal spheres of the modern woman's life to establish that while women already have what is necessary to succeed in today's business climate, their are challenges and opportunities that demand new skills and a new mindset. Williams presents four principle themes: Inner Resilience (core strengths enabling a woman to perceive herself as confident, self-reliant, and capable of shaping her life in the way she deserves); Career Enhancement (career-building strengths enabling a woman to increase skills and a sense of competence, explore a full range of emerging opportunities, and flourish in professional life); Quality Of Life (nurturing strengths enabling a woman to take better care of herself and thrive in all aspects of her life); and The Big Picture (capstone strengths enabling a woman to contribute significantly to a corporate bottom line and position herself for leadership opportunities and future success). Successful Woman's Guide To Working Smart is invaluable reading for any woman contemplating entering the work force, as well as those women already on the job and seeking to maximize both their opportunities, achievements, and satisfactions in the workplace.

Practical methodology for software architects.......2007-08-23
I'm a software engineer, specializing in requirements and software quality. I've known about QFD and the House of Quality for over a decade, and I've been using Use Case methodology for years. This is the first (and perhaps the only) book which combines the two methodologies and explains in a straightforward yet sufficiently detailed way how to use these methodologies. If you are struggling with many requests from multiple customers and are trying to identify what is really important, you should read this book. In particular, if you want to satisfy the customers who drive your business, i.e., generate revenue, you need to read this book. This is a low-tech approach; all you need is a spreadsheet. Understanding Use Cases, QFD, or House of Quality is not a prerequisite. Even if you are already familiar with these methodologies, I think you will still learn a lot from this excellent book.
Necessary for your Professional library.......2007-02-22
I was really happy to see Richard's new book. I have always thought that if you are going to go to the effort of writing good use cases, then you should make use of that information as much as possible in the project. This book has a prominant place on my professional bookshelf, and I refer to it often.
Richard Denney gives some great information on using your project use cases in project management, quality control, and reliability. He has a wealth of experience that he shares throughout the book. His book is well written and easy to understand. I am not aware of any other book that covers this information in the context of a software project.
Once you are comfortable with writing use cases (and of course I must recommend my own book Applying Use Cases: A Practical Guide for that purpose), then definitely start exploring what you can do with the use cases once they are written by getting a copy of Richard Denney's book, Succeeding With Use Cases: Working Smart to Deliver Quality.
practicalities of use cases.......2006-04-17
This book is about uses of use cases in software engineering. The focus is on doing and managing projects.
Topics are among others selection of standard products, management of project portfolios, or grounding projects in business goals. The last topic is an application of use cases to QFD, a process originally from the automobile industry. Other topics are reliability engineering, modelling and project management (this list is not complete).
All the topics of the book have use cases as a common factor. It is not an introduction into use cases. The application of use cases in this book goes further than what is described in the Rational Unified Process for example. Therefore other books are better in introducing the topic of use cases.
Demo excel sheets are available from the author. The examples are worked out excellently and instructive. The book focuses on the practicalites of software engineering and addresses primarily project leads, designer, architects and testers. Most of the material was new to new, although I have been using use cases for years. It will have the most value for organizations already modelling their software. In my opinion extreme programmers will not find it as useful.
Not sure about Use Cases? This book will answer all your questions........2006-01-05
Example after example; model after model! After reading this book, I was ready to begin implementation! Chapter 3, Operational Profiles, will convince and evangelize engineering and management. The degree of detail is perfect for the professional. Great Work!
Practical and Insightful Advice.......2006-01-04
When I first picked up this book, my initial reaction was "Great, just what the world needs, yet another book about use cases." Then I noticed the subtitle, Working Smart to Deliver Quality, and thought I should invest a few minutes looking it over. I'm glad that I did. Perusing the table of contents, I noticed sections entitled "Planning the Length of Iterations and Number of Use Cases in Distributed Software Development", "Setting a Failure Intensity Objective", and "Savings from Avoiding Cost of Unnecessary Development" and realized that this was more than just another use case book. Denney provides real world advice, based on his more than 25 years of experience in software development, for how to apply use cases effectively in practice. For anyone wanting to improve their use case writing skills, his insights on preconditions, postconditions, and invariants is well worth the investment in this book. For project managers, Denney's advice for estimating and scheduling based on use cases is both practical and insightful.
Book Description
School-smart and Mother-wise illustrates how and why American education disadvantages working-class women when they are children and adults. In it we hear working-class women--black and white, rural and urban, southern and northern--recount their childhood experiences, describing the circumstances that led them to drop out of school. Now enrolled in adult education programs, they seek more than a diploma: respect, recognition and a public identity.
Drawing upon the life stories of these women, Wendy Luttrell sensitively describes and analyzes the politics and psychodynamics that shape working-class life, schooling, and identity. She examines the paradox of women's education, particularly the relationship between schooling and mothering, and offers practical suggestions for school reform.

In a sea of management books this one stands out.......2005-09-15
How refreshing, to find a book that makes connections to both the practical and the management aspects. Well written, concise, to the point, and not full of mumbo-jumbo psycho-babble. Living Well, Working Smart has turned out to be a great tool for my managers and staff, and has proven to be insightful in assessing my own techniques and habits. Not just your usual run-of-the-mill self-help book. Congratulations to the authors, these two really know the real world, which makes the book more relevant and useful.
Useful skills for professional & personal life.......2005-09-10

Getting to the point.......2005-08-16
Living well, Working Smart is a rare find. Finally, a book that speaks to the vital needs of soft skill development without getting lost in concepts.
I read business books in search of tangible lessons all the time and I seldom find books that I can pass along to my management team. The reasons range from differing levels of intellectual curiosity to a lack of time for extra reading.
In this busy world getting to the point has never been more valuable. For me, this book is a smart and concise reminder of the essential building blocks to Living Well. The forty one soft skills apply to the whole person which makes it all the more effective as a business book. I will be buying a case to share with my team.

Excellent time management and life management primer.......2006-10-06
This book by Michael Le Boeuf has been very valuable to me in my career and life. I first read it when I was in my early twenties and I have been applying the principles to my life ever since.
The bottom line is that this book is filled with ideas and techniques to make you more effective. It also talks about attitudes that lead to success and uses powerful analogies and stories to drive home important points.
This book is well-organized and it gets to the point quickly. If you are busy person who needs good advise and would like to use your time more effectively, look no further.
I am living proof this book works.......2005-01-27
At a rather strange time in my life in 1985, I only owned two books, one which I bought using my own money (Robert Allen's early 1980's edition of "Nothing Down"), the other this book. This is a better book, although Allen's isn't bad either, especially for its time.
Although written in 1979 when Leboeuf was still a young whippersnapper in Louisiana, this book is still an excellent, common sensical work that is easy to understand and follow. Everyone from Tony Robbins to Covey and others have also put their own spin on much of what is covered here; it's not rocket science. But Leboeuf's folksy, down to earth, and warm prose is disarming and supportive. This is probably because unlike a lot of other "professional" self-help gurus, LeBeouf was actually a teacher and spends more time actually doing this stuff than writing books and selling DVD's about it.
I wrote down short term, medium term, and long term goals for myself back when I was 18 using this book. Twenty years later, I have accomplished most of them. And I owe it to this book, which got me off to a good start.
Doing more in less time and more; as promised........2002-07-28
This book is more then a time efficiency book but a how to book on managing all aspects of the office from scheduling and pructing meetings to effective communications. This is good starting and improving your SOHO (small office / home office) operations. It starts off each chapter discussing popular beliefs. I loved the chapter on "work tapes". People have different beliefs about work from being "good for you" to "the harder you work the more successful you are". The truth regarding discipline. The difference between being efficient and effective. Doing the right job (efficacy); doing the job right
(effective). Handing disruptions; papers; goal planning; the right way to use a TO DO list. The only problem is the material is dated to 1979. (Before email, teleconferencing and Intenet) My copy had a printing error on page 267 the publisher missed printed the pages and started over with page 33. Missed "efficient Communications") This continued for about 40 pages before picking up with last chapter of the book. Even though dated and with this defect I enjoyed the book. It's an easy read and I highly recommended it.
The best book on time management I ever read........1999-06-28
This book is best book on time management I ever read. I'm sure I squeezed out an extra half hour each workday with these principles.
