Book Description
In this funny and insightful book, Gary Rubinstein relives his own truly disastrous first year of teaching. He begins his teaching career armed only with idealism and romantic visions of teaching - and absolutely no classroom management skills. By his fourth year, however, he is named his school's "Teacher of the Year." As Rubinstein details his transformation from incompetent to successful teacher, he shows what works and what doesn't work when managing a classroom.

Excellent and realistic.......2007-09-09
I had gotten this book as a Good Luck present for my boyfriend, who just got his first teaching job. He admits that he has had trouble with classroom management and other books he had gotten were unrealistic. This book, he believes because the author found himself in a unique situation in his education career, is different because they present real problems with real solutions (and fun little sidebars too!). I flipped through the book briefly and I saw that there were case-scenarios. He said that he actually finds real situations that he has encountered and he learns a lot by comparing what he did to what the author did.
I strongly recommend this book to anyone starting in teaching, as well as a great gift to young teachers!!
Good if you're middle school and up........2007-09-08
This book is better suited for middle school teachers and beyond. As an early childhood teacher, I did not get as much out of the book as I had hoped.
Kinda disappointed.......2007-09-07
I bought this book because I too am a softie disciplinarian. See, I'm not exactly trained in the areas I'm teaching, thus my classroom management skills for the subjects I am teaching are kinda... undesirable. So I bought this book hoping for suggestions as to how to improve, and while this book was very humorous and entertaining, I also saw how much I am not a softie. This guy was really bad. I also don't agree with the whole not smiling thing. That is not a part of my personality, thus the kids would see right through me and it would still create problems, not solve them. I didn't really get any good ideas as to how to improve. I would have been better served checking this book out at the library and reading it just for some positive thinking about my own teaching methods. I like the book, but it wasn't what I expected.
An unnecessary read.......2007-08-26
There's not enough in this book to warrant purchasing and/or reading it. A large proportion of the work contains the author's introduction of himself (not applicable in the classroom) and then he espouses what not to do (equally not applicable because the information is not immediately countered by what a teacher should do). What a teacher should do for discipline problems, the author explains, comes down to deciding what kind of teacher you want to be. He provides 5 examples of different "types" of teachers (overly generalized, although amusing, and mostly unrealistic). The only value in this book emerges in the last 10 pages when the author's colleagues share their brief insights to quick classroom management problems.
Reluctant Disciplinarian: Advice on Classroom Management.......2007-07-23
I purchased this book for my wife. She is the head of English at a middle/lower socio-economic level High School. They have a number of younger or perhaps newer to the profession teachers.
My wife was very pleased with the information and strategies offered in this book. It has been especially useful in helping some of her teachers deal with discipline and classroom management issues that are commonly found in todays classrooms.
We would recommend this book to teachers.

Good Source.......2007-03-27
I recieved the book on time and it was in brand new condition.
Building Classroom Discipline.......2007-03-08
I purchased this book to go along with a Behavior Management Class that I was taking. As this was the third class I have taken in my college career going toward my Master's Degree in Elementary Education. I would highly recommend this book it provides several different models for you to review and as long as you remember that you can always that you don't have to agree with everyone you should be fine. There are several different models that I personally would take piecese of to use in my own class but I will refer back to the book as my classroom needs change just incase I have overlooked something or forgotten something.
Packed with Good Ideas.......2005-01-04
Eighth Edition. From beginning to end, this book is loaded with practical techniques for improving classroom behavior. The heart of the book summarizes the discipline approaches of a range of theorists, from pioneering models like Skinner, Kounin, and Dreikers to more sophisticated approaches including the Canters' Assertive Discipline, Glasser's noncoercive discipline, and Curwin and Mendler's Discipline with Dignity. The range of pedagogies corresponds to the diversity of pedagogies, districts, and students.
Each theorist is covered clearly and briefly. The concerns, rationales, and assumptions of each theorist are summarized, enabling educators to understand the theories underlying current practices. The techniques of each theorist are also summarized, so that educators may glean the best from each theorist. Each chapter has questions, activities, and sample cases for the reader to apply and synthesize the contents of the lesson.
An early and a late chapter specifically address the construction of a personal system of discipline. The chapter on "Working Effectively with All Students" provides tips on how teachers can work with students with special needs or from specific ethnic groups.
I found this book to be an excellent resource for my own teaching. It also helps me to understand the discipline methods of other teachers or specific districts.
Look Elsewhere for "How-to's".......2002-08-23
Building Classroom Discipline is a practical book for a college classroom; however, for the teacher looking for a "how-to" book, there are other books that are better. BCD is wonderful for learning about different theories or studies on discipline, but it doesn't get to the practical stuff until the end of the book. Therefore, if you are looking for a book full of "how-to's", read something else.
Great For Teachers.......2000-10-24
This book I believe is excellent for not only beginning teachers but also those teachers who are in a classroom now. It provides an unbiased account of Educational Theorist. The text looks at what each theorist has recommended from his or her own research in managing classroom behaviour. The book provides strategies for teachers to help control and prevent student misbehaviour. The book not only looks at old Theorist such as Dreikus, Kounin, Skinner but new Theorist such as Canter. It is a must for all teachers to read, allowing them to effectively use strategies suggested by the various theorists in their classroom. I have found the suggested strategies helpful in my own Teaching.

Comprehensive Classroom Management.......2006-02-26
I had to buy and read this book for a classroom management class. It is a great book for comparing the most recent research available. However, you usually need to read five to ten pages of what could have been stated in a paragraph. I do feel that I really understand the material by the time I finish reading the book. I have also used many of the ideas in my classroom to try and improve my classroom management in my student teaching experience.
required class reading.......2005-02-22
I was required to purchase this book for a class I am currently taking. While the content of the book could be useful, the manner in which it is written is laden with ridiculous run-on ideas that could be communicated much more clearly. Here is an example from page 28:
"Regardless of the extent to which teachers decide to adapt to the norms and parenting styles of their student's culture or systematically assists students in learning to adapt while maintaining their cultural values, the point is that as educators we are willing to examine our own beliefs and way of working with students in light of the contextual variables existing in the classroom, school and community."
To students who may be required to read this text: Good luck. Perhaps you can change classes before it is too late.
To professors who may add this book to their required reading list: Please, please, please pass on this text and choose something more relevant and tangible for your students.
To educators who may choose this book to answer questions or add to their professional library: choose something else. This book is useless. My advice is your time will be better spent going to talk to teachers who have been in the field rather than reading this book.

Buy this Book!.......2006-08-07
I love this book. Every teacher should have one. College education teacher aught to use it for their student teachers, too. The reading is easy and the tips are quick and to the point. This is a very user friendly book. Buy it!
Pretty Good!.......2006-06-21
This is a great book for beginning teachers with little to no experience in the classroom. It gives you many ideas to push you in the right direction.
As a teacher who is going into my 5th year of teaching I was looking for something a little more in depth. I know my weaknesses and was familier with everything Mr. Bianco suggested. There were no real Ah ha moments while reading this book--I've heard it all before really. He gives you the basics, but if you are having specific issues beyond that, he just doesn't delve much deeper. I also found several things that were contradictory. He talks on one hand about making the punishment fit the crime, but on another page there are "disclipine cards" where a student randomly picks his punishment--like dusting the classroom!!! Very weird.
I will end this by saying that I do think this is a great book for beginning teachers, but having been in the classroom for several years, it didn't teach me anything I didn't already know!
ONE OF MY FAVORITES.......2004-10-24
One-Minute Discipline is one of my all-time favorite books on teaching, and I've read a lot of books about teaching! It is about so much more than discipline. The section on "teaching philosophy" is profound. There are fantastic support ideas, lists, tips, techniques, forms, surveys and quotes on discipline, motivation (both student and teacher)and teaching.
My favorite thing is that nothing is taken for granted. Bianco discusses the most fundamental aspects of "basic teacher behavior" - everything from developing the "laser stare" to the "I mean business face" to "voice control" (the teacher's voice volume, though he says plenty about student voice volume too).
I took notes on the whole book and came away with a plethora of creative ideas - alternative ways for students to ask for teacher assistance (written note, desk token, etc.); multiple problem-student behavior contract forms; great ideas on dealing with a variety of hostile situations (parents, student fights, etc.); and great reward ideas.
Bianco obviously has total respect for students of all types, and his approaches are eminently positive; in fact he provides a variety of methods for monitoring that your teacher behavior is positive. However the book is about staying in control, conserving your energy for the long haul, and keeping your motivation and enthusiasm high.
The book is also so easy-to-read, with so many visuals, that it's almost like reading a comic book. I put stickies throughout the whole book, and come back and leaf through it whenever I need inspiration or strategies to solve a knotty problem.

Great for first year teachers.......2007-10-06
This book is great. It is a honest, no BS accounting of what we do in the classroom and how to make your life smoother when dealing with difficult students. I have recommended it to many friends who are also teachers. I can not say enough good things.
Excellent for teachers.......2007-08-12
I've purchased multiple copies of this book multiple times for professional development classes with teachers. It helps teachers positively manage classroom behavior in a respectful way.
Outstanding & very practical! .......2007-07-26
Excellent resource. I read this book after my first year teaching and it changed the way I handled discipline from that moment on. I now use this book when I mentor new teachers, in a book study, and then model these strategies when I am working with teachers in the classroom. I am a trainer of teachers now and everyone I suggest it to, loves it. The book maps out scenarios that every teacher has experienced, whether you are new or a veteran and then gives solutions. New teachers especially develop a self-awareness of what they are doing and why it's NOT working, after reading this book. Truly one of the BEST books on classroom management ever! I highly recommend it.
Setting Limits.......2007-07-11
I was extremely impressed by the approach advocated in this book. I've read three other books on management and discipline recently, and this is by far the best. The approach sounds positive and practical. I am going to implement this plan in my classroom and I'm buying a second copy to give to the individual who will be student teaching in my room this fall. I'm trying the techniques at home, too! It makes so much more sense to me--and is easier to manage--than stickers, pulling cards, and so on. I'm anxious to try the techniques when school starts. Based on my understanding, I think it will work, and I highly recommend the book.
a must for new teachers.......2006-09-21
I struggled with classroom management as I switched tracks from pre-school/K to 4th and 5th grade. My first year of teaching was rough because i did not set enough expecations in the beginning of the year. by april they were wearing me out after only an hour!
this year, determined to start fresh, i used many of the techiniques in this book. mostly i love that you don't have to "trick" the kids into acting appropriately. i was so resistant to gold stars and the like. really stating what you mean, being clear, and having an clearly-stated consequence has worked well so far this year. even kids coming into my room from another class know that i mean business. (without being mean)
i higly recommend this book for anyone who needs to get the kids to stop walking all over you!

An elementary teacher's best friend..........2004-01-22
This book is a teacher's dream come true. I am a fairly new teacher and don't have a lot of time to research all of the behavior issues that have come up in my classroom. Dr. Shore's book was recommended to me by another teacher in my school and I purchased it the next day. I immediately found several good suggestions for dealing with some behaviors that had been troubling me since the start of the year. Dr. Shore's suggestions are straightforward, practical and take into account both the teacher's and child's points of view and needs. Sometimes the advice seems obvious--as in "Why didn't I think of that?--but Dr. Shore's clear explanations helped me to better understand not only what strategies are more effective, but why. Best of all, the book is filled with a wide range of valuable information that is extremely easy to find and use. Every time I have opened the book, I have been able to find what I need in a matter of minutes. That's great news for a new teacher like myself. Thank you Dr. Shore!
Guaranteed to help you in the classroom........2004-01-02
I own Dr. Shore's other book, Special Kids Problem Solver, and found that really useful working with kids with academic, behavioral or medical problems so when I learned that Dr. Shore had a new book out about discipline I was eager to get it. I was not disappointed. It tackles about 70 different problems that every teacher will eventually have to deal with and gives very practical, very helpful strategies. For each problem there are maybe 8 to 10 suggestions and you can almost always find some strategy that applies to your situation. I've been teaching for 14 years and have found many strategies that are new to me. Whether you're a new or veteran teacher, get a hold of this book. It will save you lots of frustration and help give you the time to do what you were trained to do --teach.
Highly recommend this book!.......2003-12-03
EVERY teacher should have this book. This is the first book that I have found that gives practical methods to work with each unique child. Dr. Kenneth Shore covers just about every concern a teacher will encounter in the school setting. This book does not simply cover "problem" students but also gives advice on how to help students with other concerns such as low self-esteem, lack of friends and disorganization. As a special education teacher I have had the opportunity to help students overcome academic difficulties and now with this book I hope I can help them with other difficulties. I just wish I had this book when I first started teaching!!!!!
Very helpful and readable book on school discipline.......2003-11-04
I heard the author on the radio and he made sense, so I bought the book. I am really impressed with it. It takes about 60 different problems that all teachers face and offers many different approaches to dealing with them. The variety of approaches is important because everyone has their own preferences and style, and there are many good solutions to try. The layout makes the book very easy to use (the discipline problems are listed in an A to Z format), issues are explained in clear English, and the suggestions seem quite practical. A very useful book for teachers and others dealing with children.

Book Description
Simplify your search for effective therapies with this comprehensive volume, filled with several different, yet often complementary approaches to treatment. Provides alternative, proven methods for treating problems such as truancy, disruptiveness, prejudice, anxiety, procrastination, substance abuse, and other common school behavior problems.
Book Description
This book provides information about helping children become happy, responsible, and productive people. Using the recommendations and research of Jean Piaget, Alfred Adler, and Carl Rogers, the authors share their personal convictions about what is best for young children, rather than merely presenting an impartial overview of various approaches. The book provides a clear understanding of childhood development and developmentally appropriate practices as they relate to the causes of children's behavior. A three-part organization covers discipline foundations, discipline approaches, and matching discipline causes to discipline approaches. For parents, teachers, counselors, and anyone involved in shaping the development of young children.

Covers Everything Without Overdoing It........2006-09-28
It's a short, relatively inexpensive book, and it hits just about everything that you need for disciplining a child. You've got the theory (i.e. Dreikurs), developmental chapters, and a section (Part 3) that forces the teacher to consider a child's cultural and experiential background before making discipline decisions. That's often neglected.
Well-written and easy to read!
A whole different approach!.......2005-03-31
I work as a Lead Teacher in an Early Childhood Education setting and this book gave me a whole different approach to discipline in the classroom. I was doing everything wrong and constantly putting my kids in "time-out" ALL DAY LONG. When that didn't work for some kids, I would get frustrated and my whole day would become stressful. After reading this book and applying it's principles, my days went much easier and my preschoolers respected me and listened to me alot more, as well. I highly recommend it to any teacher working with pre-schoolers.
