A smart, practical approach.......2005-07-08
The author provides the complete toolset essential for reading comprehension. For example, the author shows exactly what a "main idea" is, provides definitions and examples, provides hands-on practice and tests reader understanding, and then ties several related tool-skills together in a later review chapter with further integrated practice materials. This sensible approach was missing or lacking in every other book I read; the first grade reading comprehension books I browsed at the bookstore were more helpful than those books. I have been out of formal education for many years and I read several top-brand books trying to get solid help. None of those books were nearly as helpful as this one book. In fact, (Elizabeth L. Tesla) the author's series of books is a must for every personal reference book shelf- even appropriate for younger children. This one book answers all of the questions and solves all of the problems related to reading, but the author also points out correctly that a reader must practice in everyday situations by reading a variety of materials and applying the tools in this book. Reading is a lifelong enjoyment and acquired skill. Buy this book and then practice, practice, practice.
Understand what you read!.......2003-11-04
Finally! I was having a problem with reading comprehension. I was having a hard time with my homework, and also preparing for English tests. This book really breaks down the best way to understand what you read. All the practice really helps too!
Great book for SAT prep.......2000-06-05
This book is great, it boosted my SAT score by 100 points. I benefitted a lot from the contents and it gives you great practice. I suggest you buy the book for test prep. The book does exactly what it says on the cover.

Vocabulary & Spelling Success in 20 minutes a day........2007-01-16
I believe to brought a book new, But come to find out it was old. I suggest you don't but used books and be careful when it says new and is not.
A must-have!.......2003-10-31
I work as an administrative assistant so I am often writing letters, memos, and reports for my supervisor. I found that this book has expanded my vocabulary and eliminated the spelling errors I used to make. (Spell check isn't perfect!)
Also, this is my favorite book to recommend to my ESL students (I volunteer one day a week). You won't regret buying this book!

0205283136.......2001-02-19
There is some good books and not so good books. This book is neighter. The intention of author a great innovative but the cases, application and examples are very limited. Additionally, the author always uses the application for explanation. The limited reference is only in educational areas, while I prefer to read a general idea or more in scientific research (see "A Ph.D. Is Not Enough : A Guide to Survival in Science" by Feibelman or "Tomorrow's Professor : Preparing for Academic Careers in Science and Engineering" by Reis). Therefore, this book is categorized as "not-so-good-book" for me. In contrast, my girlfriend in education school quite like this book. This book shows many reference to the referee journals including the statistics, e.g., acceptance rate, turn-over time, # article per year., etc. Therefore, this book is a "good-book" for education student, at least my friend. Well, since it's neighter one, I will give this book 3 stars then.

Book Success... SAT success?.......2006-03-27
This book has been of great help to me! I love the fact that not only are their lists of definite definitions haha!! There are also ways of figuring out the definitions. So if you don't know the word you get clues to figure it out! I think the book will have helped me greatly for my SAT which i take this week! As I've browsed through the book i realized that these words are useful! So, they're not a bunch of sound smart grandiloquent words, on the other hand, they're words that any person can use! I recommend this book a million times over it will greatly help you not only for the SATs, ACTs, but also for everyday vocab!
YOU WON'T FIND A BETTER BOOK.......2000-10-27
This book is excellent for anyone who wants to master the rich English language. The "workbook" approach, at first glance, may make you feel a bit awkward, but it's extremely useful and highly effective. What I particularly liked about the book is the wonderful succint information(little stories) on the various origins of common English words. By knowing the origin, a word is better learned and is registered quickly in our memory. This book is really worth its price.
A pretty difficult book, but well written.......2000-07-29
There are quite a number of great examples in this book. Many of these come from famous poets and writers. However, the author failed to give some of the diffiult ones an explanation. Thus, it seems very difficult to comprehend sometimes. The definition of words is pretty concise. However, if the author had put more effort into introducing this word to the readers, it would make learning a lot more easier. I also suggest that the next edition include a CD Rom because it is very fun to study via multimedia presentation. The exercises in the book are adaquant, but there seems to be a lack of explanation. Sometimes I do find it difficult to understand the answer. I have been n search of good vocabulary books for almost two years. I have not found one yet, but this is certainly one of the good ones that I have.
It helped me so much!.......1999-08-01
I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to improve their vocabulary, especially if they are studying for a standardized test (i.e. SAT, PSAT, ACT, etc.). It is filled with words that will possibly show up on these tests, and it is a lot easier (and more interesting) to do the activities in this book than to read a dictionary to learn the words. I used this book in my English class at school and I learned so many new words. Then when I took the SAT, I was thrilled to discover that almost every word on the test had been in this book, and I had only finished half of the book! I'm about to buy this book for myself so that my whole family can use it to help study for any other tests we might take in the future. This book really helped me improve my verbal score, and I definitely think you should try using it, too.

Great Textbook for Business Culture ESL Class.......2003-09-29
This series of case studies is an excellent template for upper intermediate and higher ESL students interested in discussing cultural issues in a business context. I used this in Japan for a few years. The book is well suited for a jigsaw approach by initially dividing the class in 2, then pairing students for an information exchange before a round table discussion. The vocabulary is challenging at that level, and there are additional word form exercises at the end of each unit. There's lots of room for teachers and students to build on the themes with personal anecdotes, and for extensions into vocabulary and pronunciation. Students get lots of opportunity to participate, analyse, and give opinions, and use the target vocabulary - and there's always an opportunity to compare the topic cultures with the local culture. This is a great course book for an introduction to Business cultural issues for ESL students.
My mistake I suppose.......2002-03-04
Yes, I should have read the publisher's review properly... This book is for low-medium level students of English, and offers some useful angles for learning. However, in my opinion it is of little help for people who have to DO business across cultures. If the reader is struggling with English to the extent that they would find this book relevant to their needs, then they are likely to be out of a job if using that language in the workplace.
As an ESL text it may have uses in the hands of a good teacher (because the material is superficial). If your or your students actually need to LEARN something about doing business outside your home country, look elsewhere.
Book Description
Increasing numbers of employers are using verbal reasoning tests, which check understanding and use of written English, as part of their recruitment procedures. Lack of word power can stand in the way of you getting a job, gaining promotion or being offered training.
