5 out of 5 stars Good book and service!.......2007-10-19

I ordered this book and it came in excellent condition and in a timely manner.

5 out of 5 stars Fowler surfs the waves of educational public policy!.......2003-05-01

An excellent source of information for the layperson or serious student of American education systems. Dr. Fowler explains in great detail a variety of such substantive areas as the meaning of policy; power and education; a discussion of the policy environment; some types of political systems and culture; ideological and value systems; who sets the stage in the making of education policy; the various stages of the policy process and so forth. Enjoyable! Thorough! Substantive!

4 out of 5 stars Educational Leaders.......2001-03-13

This book was very easy to read and understand. Coming from a teaching background, and not knowing anything about policy making, this book was a true education. I used it in my grad class, and every student commented on the ease of understanding and the interest in the text. This is a must buy if you want to learn anything about education, teaching or being an administrator!

2 out of 5 stars I've seen better.......2004-01-23

The tenth edition is not very well organized. Overall, a very boring book.

2 out of 5 stars Okay, but other books are out there........2003-04-21

Like I said in a precious review, I like National University, but they could have chosen a different book. I am Caucasian, white, Christian, heterosexual, male, with blonde hair and blue eyes, and let me tell you, this book will make it seem that the whit people in this country are racist bigots. And that we are trying to indoctrinate every single child that comes to America while keeping all the other people in lower classes. That is how I felt.

I was shocked by how biased this book is. I am beginning to think that the publishers Allyn and Bacon have an agenda.

One of the only topics I liked about this book is the short parts at the end of each chapter that tells the reader different ideas for making a professional portfolio. But, I can imagine that there are other books better.

4 out of 5 stars Okay, for a Textbook.......2002-02-25

This book wasn't too bad, considering it is a textbook. If you're forced to read it for class, take heart! It's not too boring--once you get started, it actually moves pretty quickly, and you will learn a lot. If this isn't required for a class, I would not suggest curling up in front of the fireplace with this book, or, really, reading it at all, unless you're really into learning more about the basics of American Education.

4 out of 5 stars Children's Literature for Adults.......2001-05-02

This book offers indepth information about a variety of topics concerning childrens literature. In the first chapters it focuses on the development of children and their perceptions of literature at different ages. It then informs the reader about the historical development of children's literature. The biggest part of the book, however, is about the different genres of literature available. What I liked about this book was that it offered many examples and reading samples. It also included several essays from children book authors who wrote about their profession. The teaching aids and the recommended reading at the end of each chapter proved helpful. However, some areas of this book, such as this one, are only helpful to people interested in child education as a profession.

4 out of 5 stars Great source for Children's Literature !!.......2007-05-19

I highly recommend this book for Children's Literature. Extremely well organized by genres and well written. I found it very interesting and informative, but, I love childrens' literature. My only criticism of the book is regardingthe copyright of 1995. As a result, there have been many great children's books printed since 1995 that were not covered in this book. Nevertheless, I found this book to be a source of great information and one that I will continue to use.

3 out of 5 stars Through the eyes of child.......2006-11-06

This was required reading for my class. I like the web site that goes with the book. It has sample tests.

4 out of 5 stars Hard To Read Wealth of Children's Litature Course.......2005-11-04

If you plan to teach a children's literature course, then this book possesses nearly all of the information, history, and important milestones that you need...if you can get by the stilted language.

It reads well for someone like me who studies/collects children's literature as a personal hobby; however, for the average reader? Get ready for a painful struggle.

I would suggest using it in conjunction with two other books: Jacob & Tunnell's more classroom-focused CHILDREN'S LITERATURE, BRIEFLY and Rebecca Luken's more historcal/applicable balanced CRITICAL HANDBOOK OF CHILDREN'S LITERATURE.

1 out of 5 stars Reads like telephone book!.......2005-11-01

This is by far the most boring text book I have ever read. I can't stomach it. It reads like one long boring bibliography. There are so many lists of children's books and their authors that any meaningful information gets lost. The authors of this book overload you with too much information and research that they are obviously very proud of but which puts a strain on your mind. I wanted to learn about the history of children's literature but I just couldn't get past the many, many, many list of children's books that litter the text. I just think that the lists should have been at the end of each chapter for those want to know that stuff. For those who just want the facts, like me, the book is useless. But that's my opinion.

    4 out of 5 stars Thanks!.......2005-10-14

Book I great. Learned a lot from it for my literacy class. I was a little steep on the money side, but a good investment.

      Book Description

If you are about to start law school or are in your first year, this book would be a good companion. Now in the fourth edition, this text has helped thousand of folks become better law students and down the road, better lawyers.

Like other introductory books, it covers the basics: reading and briefing cases; preparing for class; outlining and study groups; taking exams. There are exercises so you can apply what you have learned. In addition to these essentials, the book focuses of what is often quite elusive: legal analysis; Why do courts follow precedent?; How are cases applied and distinguished?; How is ambiguous language interpreted? Legal analysis is the hidden ball of the first year, and with this book you will be well on your way.

There are chapters on legal writing (not necessarily boring or highfalutin') and on oral argument (not necessarily terrifying). These chapters will help in first year writing and Moot Court Programs. And, for those of you who aren't sure, there are chapters revealing the wide array of careers that will be open to you.

The book reads fast, well, and is often funny. That said, drawing on the work of philosophers, psychologists, and novelists, it takes you and your calling quite seriously, but never (not even once) pompously.

      Customer Reviews:

      4 out of 5 stars good review.......2007-08-31

The University of Florida recommends reading this book before starting law school there. I read it and found if was a very good cohmprehensive review of what to expect. It makes the first few weeks of school seem a little less intense if you have an idea of what you're getting into.
Hope this helps and Go Gators!

4 out of 5 stars Excellent book to help prep your mind........2007-08-28

Nothing will completely prepare you for the brain battery that is law school, but this book will help prepare you to the basic concepts and get you in the right frame of mind before you start Orientation. Get it. Read it. Then work hard at your classes and you'll do great.

3 out of 5 stars Easy to read, but lacks content.......2007-05-15

This book covers a variety of subjects, introduces law school, gives a very basic introduction to note taking/exams, gives a few pointers on writing and generally eases someones worries if they are concerned about law school.

However, that is all it does. It does not contain anything you will actually need to know for law school. It will just make you feel less uneasy about it.

If you can rent it at your library for free, it is worth a browse, but it isn't worth actually buying if you want to actually learn something before or during law school.

5 out of 5 stars This is THE book to read if you are Law School bound.......2006-08-11

This book is humorous, insightful, and worthwhile.

5 out of 5 stars Buy It, Borrow It, Just Get It........2006-05-19

The single best book that I have found which really does explain the study and practice of law, hence the title.

5 out of 5 stars Introduction to Mathematical Economics is a great book.......2007-10-13

I took 6 courses in economics in college but this book took me further than Managerial Economics did as it discussed some topics not in my college courses.

5 out of 5 stars Has greatly improved my understanding of mathematical economics.......2007-09-07

This book has been a great help in understanding mathemayical economics. Each subjet starts with an explanation of how the math works. Then works each problems step by step to show how it all works together and they don't skip steps like some economics texts do. With the help of this book i am inverting matrix.

5 out of 5 stars Good book .......2005-07-23

This is a good book for those studying calculas or various business subjects. It is easily explained with a lot of examples.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent resource.......2005-06-18

This is an excellent book for non-quant jockeys who want to brush up on their mathematical skills for upper-level or graduate-level econ courses. The best strength of the book is its organization. After a chapter on introduction and discussion of a mathematical technique or theory, a chapter on the technique's application is presented. This is an excellent way to not only reinforce the material but demonstrate its applications and relavence to economics.

However, several caveats should be noted:

First, I believe that the ideal reader should already have some exposure to calculus. For instance, Dowling discusses the fundamentals of differentiation in about 26 pages, which is far too little if one is learning calculus from scratch. If the reader already has some exposure to calculus (as I did), then Dowling's chapters on differentiation and integration could be used as review.

Second, the learning curve really steepens in the latter chapters when Dowling discusses differential equations as he appears to sacrifice detailed explanations for brevity.

Lastly, I think the reader would be best served to use this book as a resource and not just as the main text. Mathematical Economics is a very broad and challenging subject, and as good as this book is, it only scratches the surface of a complex topic. I would also recommend "Fundamental Methods of Mathematical Economics" by Alpha Chiang.

      Highly recommended.

2 out of 5 stars The book is pathetic.......2005-01-18

Each question posed by the book is accompanied by a solution, which is a good thing, however, the solutions provided by the text include very few steps and little explanation. Furthermore, the questions in the text are way too simple. [...]

      Book Description

This new Hebrew book for adult learners is ground breaking in its structure and as an effective educational tool. This superb new text was created by Rabbi Linda Motzkin in consultation with key figures in the field of Hebrew education. Piloted in a sample of Reform congregations throughout the country, the book is the first step in a program of Hebrew learning for adults. Drawing upon the particular knowledge that the individual reader brings to the material, one is carefully introduced to the letters and vowels of the Hebrew alphabet. The goal is to develop the reader's ability to decode written Hebrew words as well as to ground the learning of Hebrew in the broader sense of its use in Jewish life, ritual, study, and tradition.

3 out of 5 stars Fair introductory Hebrew book.......2007-08-11

This is a pretty good book for an introductory Hebrew class. It provides a mixture of basic Hebrew and siddur Hebrew, introducing many word roots used in the prayer book. This satisfies the requirements of the average Hebraically functionally illiterate American Jew who has only a marginal interest in actually mastering Hebrew, but would like to be able to pronounce and "follow along" during Sabbath prayer services. Definitely not the only book one would need to know Hebrew. No grammar or linguistic niceties, simply a book to help you have some ability to know where you are in the prayer book. I am not sure I would recommend this as a beginning book for someone who is serious about learning Hebrew. It is more of a thing unto itself, not necessarily providing a grounding for further study.

      4 out of 5 stars Pleased.......2007-07-12

I purchased this book because it was the required text for my class. We use it as an adjunct to other materials. As a stand alone text, I might not be as happy with it. But along with class discussions and other materials it's been a great tool for learning. If you know NOTHING about Hebrew, this is perhaps not the best book to pick for your first primer. However, for our purposes, it's been great.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book for Adults Learning Hebrew.......2002-03-24

I found this book to be very clear, with useful exercises in reading and writing Hebrew. The letters are not taught in alphabetic order, but rather in logical groupings that are often used together in words. The vowels are added one or two at a time, and though I felt challenged, I was not overwhelmed. I found it fun, and even reading right to left seemed natural as I became familiar with how the consonants and vowels related to each other.

Besides teaching the sounds of the letters, there are sections on Hebrew word roots, which I found immensely helpful in understanding some of the thinking and spirit in the language. I felt as if I'd been given a key into a whole new way of thinking. For example, there are names of G-d that relate to certain root words in ways that are surprising and wonderful, and there are foods we eat on High Holidays because they are a "pun" on another word that is a spiritual quality we ask for in the new year. The extra dimension this book adds beyond mere pronunciation is its real gift.

I recommend this book to adults with an interest in exploring Hebrew. After just a month, I was able to read (slowly) from the prayer book, and find myself asking questions that I would not have thought of had I only known the English translation.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction to the Hebrew alphabet.......2001-10-21

I liked this primer much better than 'Learn Hebrew Tody, Alef-Bet for Adults'. It offered better exercises, clearer pronunciation guides and more in-depth grammatical explanations. An excellent first choice for the adult beginner.

5 out of 5 stars Hebrew Alphabet Made Easy.......2000-07-16

Most grammars give the alphabet a chapter or two and expect the student to swallow it whole - Rabbi Motzkin takes the Hebrew alphabet and teaches it in digestible bites. The alphabet is taught in its natural context - Jewish worship and beliefs, a few letters at a time and with plenty of background material to cement the letters and sounds into the student's mind. Writing is taught along with the letters.

Directed specifically those who want to learn Hebrew in worship, this work is invaluable to anyone - Christian or Jewish - who wants to study the Bible in its original text.

The second book is due to come out in 2001 - Watch for it!
