Excellent Review Book.......2005-02-05
I used only this book to prepare for the last administration of the SAT II writing test. All of the concepts that were on the actual test are covered in this book. The review questions are a good deal trickier than the questions on the actual exam, but they will get you attuned to looking for just what the College Board wants you to see. In fact, the errors on the actual test become ridiculously obvious once you know what to look for. Since the new SAT I writing section is the same as the SAT II writing, consider using this book to review for the SAT I.
I was pleased to receive an 800 on the real exam.
Simply Amazing........2004-10-23
I was never a great writer, and a scoffed at the thought of grammar. When I decided to take the Sat 2 Writing Test I bought this book. I expected the test to be a "piece of cake." Was I wrong. I took the first practice test in this bookand I got a 490. I read the chapters apathetically and then I got my score up to a 550. With a week to go I beared down and really studied this book. In no time I was scoring mid 600s. I just got my scores today and I got a 710, thanks to this book. If you are not taking the Sat 2 writing test I definitely recommend this book for the Writing portion of the New Sat or the PSAT.
I LOVE THIS BOOK!!!!!!!!!.......2004-10-22
I took WRITING CLASSES and only got a 670 on the test (I took it TWICE) but after two weeks with this book, I GOT AN 800!!!! I recommend this to anyone who is frustrated with increasing his/her score. The practice tests are incredibly helpful but the Barron's exercises are pretty good too. Either way, this is a GREAT book!
Very helpful.......2004-09-06
I'll be taking the SAT IIs in October and I'm glad I ordered this book now, mostly because it's so huge! But I've looked through it (not thoroughly yet, of course) and it looks very informative. It should be, shouldn't it? Since the people that wrote it also write the test!
My score increased by 240 points in only 4 days.......2004-07-02
You don't believe me?
A week before the real test, I took a Princeton Review practice SAT II Writing test and got a FANTASTIC 550. I even cried because I'm an "A" English student. With only 4 days left to fully dedicate myself to studying (I had to study for finals too), I feared my fate was sealed. Personally, I always buy Princeton Review books to study for standardized tests, but this time I chose the Kaplan book. This book is great. If possible, just memorize all of the writing rules and errors that Kaplan goes over, write a coherent essay, and you're looking at a 700 or above. You don't need to study out of this book any more than 2 or 3 weeks. But if you don't have that much time, like me, get this book and take one practice test and have someone grade your essay (an English teacher would be good). Go over the writing mechanics section. Don't spend more than a day on the essay section unless you get a 2,3, or 4 out of 12 on the practice essay. And if you have no idea where to begin, just remember that all you need is four days. With four days, I got a 790!!!

Customer Reviews:
OMG OMG THANK YOU FOR THE 800.......2007-09-13
i was an average student in a non-honors chemistry class, who barely got a 90. however, thanks to this book, i received an 800 on the sat ii chemistry test! when i found out, i was extremely happy but not too surprised because on test day, i was able to answer every question effortlessly. i couldn't believe how easily i was able to go through the test. it was amazing how i knew exactly how to answer every question. i left the test center feeling sure that i would get at least a 780 on the test and i did!
i purchased both the princeton review and barrons books but neither can measure up to the kaplan book. the review is perfect; it contained just the right amount of information and was easy to follow, except it lacked the two sections on descriptive chemistry and experimentation. simply read the barron's for those. i also advise you to take the practice tests in the barrons book because they are much harder than the real test.
overall, this book is EXCELLENT!
superb!!.......2004-10-11
This is overally is excellent. Every chapter covers the concepts which you need on the SAT II examination. The depth is actually much deeper, compared with the Baron's and Princeton Review. If one wants a in depth review on the chemistry, this book is for him. After finishing this book(I mean really really understand every conception shown on the book), one is not only well prepared for the SATII chemistry test, but also well equiped for a undergraduate chemistry study. However, I recommend everyone who is using this book also use the baron's because this book is hard enough to confuse anyone by its simple appearance and lack of calculation practice.
Ok but unorganized.......2004-07-19
The Kaplan book is quite comprehensive but the lack of diagrams and the disorganized state of the book can make this a boring read. It goes over a lot of useless info that may be confusing and the text may lose you in some parts. If you have a lot of self motivation and patience, this book may work out for you. Be sure to read up on Barrons because it is quite a bit more user friendly and is organized more like a high school chemistry book which is much more familiar to most students.
Excellent Preparation.......2004-07-19
The Kaplan SAT II Chemistry book provides excellent preparation for the exam. The extensive information covered details almost everthing that you could possibly want to know for this exam. However, there are several useless pieces of information in this book. The equilibrium equations with natural logs, etc. are all extra useless stuff. Also the extra material for atomic orbitals is not on the SAT II. No one will ask you about the specific name of quantum numbers. This extra stuff means that they didn't put in enough descriptive chemistry review and experimentation, hence only 4 stars. Not perfect, but if you buy either Chemistry the Easy way or the other Barrons SAT II book and read up on the two great chapters on experiments and descriptive chemistry you're all set. I recommend buying the REA book as well for the practice. Nothing improves your score as much as practice.
Got me a 800!!.......2004-01-19
I used this book in conjunction w/ Barron's and Princeton Review and I got an 800, mostly thanx to this book. Barron's was too detailed, but good for reference and practice tests. Princeton review was 2 broad.

Mediocre at Best.......2003-08-25
With about a month left to prepare for the SAT II: Physics test, and a college level background in Mechanics (from preparing for the AP Physics test), I purchased this book with the hopes of improving my knowledge of electricity, magnetism, thermal physics, and everything else the test covers that isn't Newtonian Mechanics.
After working my way through the book in about two weeks, I began taking the practice tests, and low and behold, I was near 800 on every single one of them (I believe I averaged a 780 on them), and was finishing in half the alloted time. However, once I sat down in the classroom on that Saturday morning to take the real thing, I suddenly realized that the level of questions on the test was much more difficult than anything I encountered in the book.
Sure enough, based on my guessing skills, and leaving the right questions blank, I was able to get a 700 on the test, with only ten minutes left to spare to check over my work (as opposed to thirty while practicing). 700 was exactly the minimum score I wanted, so I was quite content with it after how badly I felt right after taking it. However, I was unhappy that the book led me to believe that my score would be higher than it actually turned out to be.
In the future, I hope Kaplan models their practice tests more accurately to the level of questions on the test.
Disappointing.......2002-11-18
I purchased, and began studying with, this book three months prior to the examination. I went in on test day knowing the book cover-to-cover, but did not score above the average test score. As a straight-A physics student, I was highly disappointed with my results. Though the book did break down the basics, it did not go beyond those basics, and subsequently resulted in a less-than-comprehensive text. If you wish to take the Physics test, I would strongly recommend an AP Physics book, or even any other book.
Filled with errors........2002-06-05
Compared to the other Kaplan SAT II books this one was a major disappointment. The material was poorly covered and the book is filled with small errors. While all the material is correct, there are many typograpphical errors and other errors that should have been caught by editors. There are many typos in the otherwise very helpful practice tests. Many questions are mispelled and the answers in the back do not match up with the same questions in the test. Kaplan was very sloppy with this one. However since this is their first edition the second may be better.
Well organized and MORE sample tests.......2002-04-10
This guide is well-written making it easy to choose just the topics you are weakest in. It seems better than the competing Barrons books. Take the practice tests!

Customer Reviews:
An excellent book for prepping the SAT II maths........2004-01-24
This book is a really good guide to do well in the SAT II Maths section. It is concise and doesn't overboard you with information which is useless and you won't find on the real test. The book balances out the explaning with a good set of questions at the beginning to tell you what you need to improve on and end to see how you improved. The structure and content of this book is so much better than the Barron's one because the content they give you for the IC level is enough to actually do most of the IIC tesT (which means that the questions they give ya are a lot harder). Kaplan's tests mirror the actual SAT test so whatever you get in the book is going to be most likely ur score for the real thing (not including pressure and stuff). Also the explanations it gives you for each answer is crystal clear and should leave no confusion as they explain it thoroughly so that if you are given a similar question on the test again you should be able to get it correct.
The scaling of their scores is pretty correct. My score started off (currently in grade 9 now) with a score of 480 but it went up to a score of 660 which is a huge increase.
The book gives you the key/main points and formulas you need to know but in the end they twist the questions from the diagnostic from the beginnning of the chpater MAKING SURE u know how to apply the maths that they have just taught you which is good as you aren't going to see the same exact questions on the real thing.
One flaw which the kaplan book does have is that it should offer more examples/questions to give more practice before you actually take the test so that people will no what other questions are expected with that certain formula/method etc.
Overall i would recommend this too anyone hu needs help for the SAT II math (and definitely dont buy Barron's unless if you have LOTS of time to read their explanations, and not do that many questions).
Great Book for studying for the SAT II's.......2003-10-19
I was totally freaked out when I had to take the SAT II Math CI last year because I was only in tenth grade. I bought three practice books: Kaplan, REA, and Spark Notes. Kaplan was by far the best. It prepares you well and helps you figure out your strengths and weaknesses. Everyone else in my math class used only the REA book to prepare for the test, and as a result, they all scored lower than I did. Though it would be best to prepare for this test with multiple books (but DON'T use REA - the questions are very unrealistic and there are many, many errors), this book does a good job at teaching the basics. With its help I only got two questions wrong and received a 770.
Accurate representation of the real test.......2002-11-01
For some odd reason, I found it hard to find a book that accurately depicts the contents of the actual SAT II:Math IIC test. However, my search ended when I bought this book from amazon.com. This book focuses completely on the questions one can expect on the real exam and doesn't bother you with unnecessary or outdated material (like what you'd find in Barron's). The two practice tests were some of the best I've found. However, I would accredit my 800 to working with a number of books and working over a good period of time. I would recommend that anyone who is buying this book also pick up The Princeton Review's book and do their practice drill questions. If you have the time and feel you could use more practice, you can give the REA's book a shot. It isn't as realistic as this book, but it makes good practice.
In short, Kaplan is absolutely amazing: make sure its in your shopping cart!
Pretty decent book.......2002-04-19
I had the baron's one and found the questions in it very hard, even though i was pretty good at math. Got this book and found that it showed the basic essence needed and gave a more realistic
picture (simpler questions) for the SAT 2.
However, if you are rather good at math, this book would slightly
disappoint you. But still, it was worth the purchase.
This is my favorite for tests and review.......2001-12-12
The four full-length tests are probably the best feature of the book (2 Ic and 2 IIc). The review is excellent too; the study plans for Ic and IIc are well laid out. The chapters clearly tell you what to study depending on what level you're going for, and the key notes in the margins give a lot of helpful hints. In addition to the tests, each chapter has quizzes, so that there are a lot of really good practice questions. I wasted a lot of money on another book; this one is clear and sensible. Wish I'd bought it first!

Kaplan Provides More Practice Tests for the $$$.......2003-03-12
As helpful as the introductory material is in this work, Kaplan's SAT II Literature guide does not bog the reader down with hundreds of pages of "test talk ." Instead, most of the book is devoted to no fewer than EIGHT practice tests, with answer explanations included. Descriptions of the test, recommendations for test-taking and a humorous glossary of literary terms are there if you want them; but if you learn best BY DOING, then this volume comes highly recommended.

Awesome.......2006-12-03
I used this book for my own exam and got a 720 on it. I only found two negative aspects of this book; the poor diagrams and irrelevant information. In place of the diagrams in the Kaplan, i recommend that you use Priceton Review. I absolute hope that you don't use the Barron's book, considering all of the poeple i know who sue it said it sucked. I personally found that their font and spacing was too small and hard to read. Kaplan has larger text and large margins in the pages for you to tkae notes.
Kaplan's Biology compared to others.......2005-10-16
I got a 760 on the test (40 points below my goal). Although I read through the princeton review book (which reads like a novel, but not), the barron's book (which DOES have irrelevant stuff), and the REA book (which has 6 practice tests, but the material it reviews doesn't seem quite standard), I used Kaplan's mainly. It takes a lot of time to review, but it covers everything in an organized way, with 5 main subjects. Another note: Use the fourth edition, the one with a green and black cover. All of the "effective through 2003" editions are printed on brighter, higher quality paper than the editions that were "improved." I find it easier to read from this paper, that is just like the paper in your copy machine.
Excellent book.......2004-09-10
This book served to help me with the exam. Important topics liked ecology and cells are explained that is nice to learn from. I also used Cliff's Biology by Philip Pack which is also a good reference--easy reading. However, if you want great test preparation questions get the following which helped also---
The Ultimate Study Guide for Biology: Key Review Questions and Answers with Explanations
Volume 1 isbn: 1933023007
Volume 2 isbn: 1933023015
Volume 3 isbn: 1933023023
These study guides were very thorough for going over the important topics encountered. Kaplan SAT II: is also very good for building the core knowledge in biology that one needs to know for test.
SOLID HELP.......2004-06-18
I used this book along with the Cliffs AP Biology review book. They worked great together. KAPLAN's book reads like a textbook but is good to read twice. Cliffs is excellent inside-out as far as information coverage. Read that for a foundation. Concentrate before you read and you will do just fine. I did- I got a 790 and just read these two books for 2 weeks. The test might have a few wierd questions but don't get afraid, SAT 2s are scored very leniently. You will do fine.
Good book!.......2003-08-21
I used this book (if only for 2 days!) and got a 740 in June '03. The 2 practice tests were good, although some of the other content was boring. I didn't find any errors, and thought that the practice tests were harder than the actual thing

a very bad book.......2003-07-26
This is a very bad book, it's full of stupid questions and dumb explanations, e.g. the 3rd math multiple question of the 2nd section of the first of two practice exam did not even contain the answer for the question, and the explanation to the question is an error. .

good enough.......2004-12-12
if u want to raise your score a little or just want to review everything that uve learned in that ap course the book is good...but if your are lost and need a big increase, then i recommend u look elsewhere...
Hits the highlights.......2004-09-07
Kaplan's book hits the high points of history but rarely goes into detail. It's format is comparative, a back-and-forth examination of various cultures. The layout is visually appealing, making it easy to read and study. Chapter review questions have well explained answers.
If you're looking for a review book that is more of a memory jogger, this could be the one for you. If you're wanting a complete, in-depth, review, look elsewhere.
got an 800; can't complain!.......2004-07-10
i used this book to study, and, lo and behold, i got an 800 on the real world history test. admittedly, i was enrolled in ap world at my high school and did very well in it, but this book really does a good job of helping you nail down the key topics and terms (though i still get confused when trying to remember the greecian schools of philosophy). i would MAJORLY suggest using the real sat ii book as well (borrow it from the library and make photocopies, if you must), because several of the questions on the released exam appeared on the real test. the practice test's scaled scores are pretty accurate of your real performance, too.
go buy it.
Worse then Barron's but useful.......2004-06-19
I bought both the Barrons and Kaplan for my World History prep. Barrons is the better of the two, but Kaplan is very useful. Its advantages include 3 excellent practice tests, with scales, quick summaries and MC questions at the end of every section and high print quality(no crammed lines, easy to read). However it has flaws. It lacks visual aides(maps, pics, etc.). It lacks chronological flow and that makes it rather difficult to read and get through. If you have the money get both books, however if you have to pick get the Barrons. I scored an 800 on the exam.
