Okay, but other books are out there........2003-04-21
I was shocked by how biased this book is. I am beginning to think that the publishers Allyn and Bacon have an agenda.
One of the only topics I liked about this book is the short parts at the end of each chapter that tells the reader different ideas for making a professional portfolio. But, I can imagine that there are other books better.
Okay, for a Textbook.......2002-02-25

Equity And Excellence in American Higher Education (Thomas Jefferson Foundation Distinguished Lecture)
William G. Bowen , Martin A. Kurzweil , and Eugene M. Tobin Manufacturer: University of Virginia Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:

Book Description
Thomas Jefferson once stated that the foremost goal of American education must be to nurture the "natural aristocracy of talent and virtue." Although in many ways American higher education has fulfilled Jefferson's vision by achieving a widespread level of excellence, it has not achieved the objective of equity implicit in Jefferson's statement. In Equity and Excellence in American Higher Education, William G. Bowen, Martin A. Kurzweil, and Eugene M. Tobin explore the cause for this divide. Employing historical research, examination of the most recent social science and public policy scholarship, international comparisons, and detailed empirical analysis of rich new data, the authors study the intersection between "excellence" and "equity" objectives.Beginning with a time line tracing efforts to achieve equity and excellence in higher education from the American Revolution to the early Cold War years, this narrative reveals the halting, episodic progress in broadening access across the dividing lines of gender, race, religion, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status. The authors argue that despite our rhetoric of inclusiveness, a significant number of youth from poor families do not share equal access to America's elite colleges and universities. While America has achieved the highest level of educational attainment of any country, it runs the risk of losing this position unless it can markedly improve the precollegiate preparation of students from racial minorities and lower-income families.
After identifying the "equity" problem at the national level and studying nineteen selective colleges and universities, the authors propose a set of potential actions to be taken at federal, state, local, and institutional levels. With recommendations ranging from reform of the admissions process, to restructuring of federal financial aid and state support of public universities, to addressing the various precollegiate obstacles that disadvantaged students face at home and in school, the authors urge all selective colleges and universities to continue race-sensitive admissions policies, while urging the most selective (and privileged) institutions to enroll more well-qualified students from families with low socioeconomic status.

Sliding to the Right: The Contest for the Future of American Jewish Orthodoxy (S. Mark Taper Foundation Book in Jewish Studies)
Samuel C. Heilman Manufacturer: University of California Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0520247639 |
Book Description
Written by one of this country's leading experts on American Judaism, this book offers a snapshot of Orthodoxy Jewry in the United States, asking how the community has evolved in the years since World War II and where it is headed in the future. Incorporating rich details of everyday life, fine-grained observations of cultural practices, descriptions of educational institutions, and more, Samuel Heilman delineates the varieties of Jewish Orthodox groups, focusing in particular on the contest between the proudly parochial, contra-acculturative haredi Orthodoxy and the accomodationist modern Orthodoxy over the future of this religious community. What emerges overall is a picture of an Orthodox Jewry that has gained both in numbers and intensity and that has moved farther to the religious right as it struggles to define itself and to maintain age-old traditions in the midst of modernity, secularization, technological advances, and the pervasiveness of contemporary American culture.Customer Reviews:

Book Description
American Education: A History presents the history of American Education from precolonial times to the present in a comprehensive, seamless, engaging manner. Comprehensive, balanced, and well written, the text provides an objective overview of historical events alongside thoughtful analysis and integration as it presents each major period in the development of American education against the broader backdrop of national and world events. Each chapter is tightly locked to the preceding and succeeding chapters so that the story of American education unfolds in a seamless manner. This is the only text to explore Native American traditions (including education) prior to Colonization. It also offers very strong, ongoing coverage of minorities and women; exceptional coverage of Education in the nineteenth century in the southern states; and a noteworthy three-chapter cluster (chapters 6, 7, and 8) describing the making of the modern school system before, during, and after the Progressive Era. New to this edition is the addition of the current (1990s) history of education, expanded coverage of Native American education, increased coverage of the development of high schools, added coverage of the cultural literacy movement, and suggestions for further reading located at the end of each chapter.Customer Reviews:
