not so surprising .......2005-04-26
there is some good points to known , but it is a bit long for the ideas developed inside.
Listen up and learn how to listen!.......2002-05-21
This is a surprisingly fun book to read. Peter deLisser's "in your face" tone is hard to resist. He hammers in each point and then repeats it again for good measure. His main point -- to which he dedicates at least one-half of the book -- is the importance of being a "responsible listener." Listeners are made, not born, he believes. With practice and knowledge, you too can become a great listener -- and oh boy, the places you'll go then! Seriously, the tools and techniques in this book are very good and helpful not only in business but in personal relationships. The art of listening without reacting defensively is a real diamond in human relationships. It can turn many difficult discussions into experiences that bring people closer.
How to Listen..........2001-11-29
Most of our lives it's not uncommon to hear someone say "be quiet and listen...". Or perhaps it was "you're not listening to me..." I know I have used those words many times. However, in all of the years (47) I can't recall receiving very explicit instructions on how to listen... Never see "How to Listen" courses or conferences. Have seen much written on how to speak etc. Perhaps I looked in all the wrong places. In any case I finally found listening instructions in a book about coaching. Go figure! The 30 pages on listening are what make this worth reading. One quickly comes to understand why it appears as if nobody is listening to you; only 5% have been trained to listen. One quickly learns listening technique which has been invaluable to my career and personal life as well. This one stays on the reference shelf!
A practical survival guide to communicating with humans........2001-08-14
The book provides a person with my background (a science nerd turned into a hi-tech manager) well founded, well explained and 100% scientific approach to business communications. It teaches HOW to take 100% responsibility for listening and speaking. It is easy to advice not to react emotionally to what other person says, and everybody does it in their books. In contrast, this book teaches techniques that make emotional reaction unnecessary, without any artificial self control. When reading this book I realized that emotions in response to what others say result from the lack of the kind of analysis the author suggests to do: evaluate the message as being valid/invalid, conversation as being equal/unequal, always know where you are in any conversation. Making this analysis a habit accomplishes two goals: it makes clear and explicit (illuminates) what is actually going on, and moves you to the analytical kind of reaction instead of emotional. The book helped me to realize that emotions often result from the fear similar to the fear people experience in a dark maze. The analysis presented in the book results in always knowing where you are in a conversation, illuminates the maze, and removes the fear and all associated emotions. The author also provides clear guidance and scripts for what to do and what not to do when listening, which also builds confidence and thus lowers the emotion. In the section on speaking I liked the classification of speaking (coaching, declarations), the structured approach to speaking, and examples and scripts that are provided. I found it helpful to always know what you are doing when speaking. Then I can take control, and take the 100% responsibility for the outcome. The conversation management techniques (goals, time, exits, getting attention and commitments) are also invaluable. Reading the book had immediate effect on all of my relationships (I have a wife, three kids, a job and a lot of friends).
Not Just for the Suits!.......2001-06-29
I am not an executive in Big Business; I am a theater professional, living in a village in the New York metropolitan area; I have a family; I am a pro bono community activist. Mr. deLisser's techniques are useful in all quarters of my varied life.
From trying achieve consensus in a rehearsal process to motivating committee members of a library board, Mr. deLisser's system works. The reader will also find the book helpful in domestic communications from the kitchen to the bedroom.
I can highly recommended this book
Book Description
Using dozens of case studies from well-known companies such as General Electric, FedEx, Procter & Gamble, Merck, Boeing, and Intel,
Delahaye president and public relations scientist
Mark Weiner offers a research-based model for creating and implementing public relations programs that will generate desired results and improve an organization’s ROI. Written as a highly accessible hands-on guide, Unleashing the Power of PR explains how to use market research methods to plan and evaluate public relations programs scientifically. The author explores the benefit of learning to speak to senior executives in a way that will improve communications and ultimately help strengthen PR performance and results. In addition, the book debunks common myths—such as “PR is impossible to measure!”—that undercut the effectiveness of PR and obscure its real value.
Customer Reviews:
A Must Read for PR and Marketing Professionals.......2007-10-15
Mark Weiner's book is a "must read" for PR, marketing and any communications professional working today. It's chock full of great examples as well as great advice. Mark's research background gives him a unique vantage point -- one we can all learn from. And, his experiences represent real life, not an academic approach. I highly recommend it and keep it on my desk as a resource.
Useful take on measuring the results of PR.......2007-05-18
Although hardly the "contrarian" of his book's title, Mark Weiner correctly identifies two problems common to public relations practitioners: They fail to set objectives, and then they fail to measure what they have accomplished. Weiner explains an uncomplicated way to correct these tendencies. He tells PR managers and their clients why taking a scientific approach can improve the professionalism of PR campaigns and gain respect for them in the marketing world. He uses examples from his own experience to buttress his arguments about the benefits of PR. Occasionally, the book is repetitive, but it is eminently practical. We recommend it to corporate communicators, PR consultants and their clients.
Excellent Resource: Clear, Concise, Complete.......2007-03-21
One of the best books on evaluating the impact of public relations, Unleashing the Power of PR, has been invaluable to me. As a graduate student, I've used it as a resource for a project, and I'll be using it as the foundational resource for my thesis.
Unlike most books about research, which are dry and verbose, Weiner presents his argument and examples for good research in clear, concise prose. There's no bones about it, this is a must read for serious students of PR and professionals alike.
A Must Read for the C-Suite, Business Leaders & PR Pro's.......2007-01-13
Penned by the founder and president of Delahaye, you may expect Unleashing The Power Of PR to be a thinly veiled sales pitch for his company's research services (like many of the books in the business section today). You'll be pleasantly surprised, however, to find that this is not the case. Instead, you'll discover that Weiner's first book is actually a well researched, compellingly argued case for strengthening the role of public relations in your company's business strategy. In fact, to some extent, Mr. Weiner gives away the core secrets of the media measurement program it took years for his company to perfect.
For those, like me, who learn best by example, Weiner does not disappoint. Pulling from several Delahaye case studies and other sources, Weiner clearly illustrates his main points with relevant, contemporary examples. And, on several occasions, I actually found myself tapping into the dark depths of my fantasy reserves (the energy stores I usually save for Coastal Living feature properties or Mercedes-Benz catalogues), to conjure a vision - one where I transform my small company's marketing efforts into a well-oiled PR machine of my very own, increasing sales by 150%, and positioning POPLOGIX as the preeminent, affordable marketing consulting firm in the US by 2008.
Fantasies aside, this is a recommended read for the contemporary marketing professional but, more importantly, it is a must read for those in the C-Suite and those responsible for their companies PR investment. The return on your PR investment is not only tangible, but also measurable, and can directly impact your business objectives.
There's a lot to like about this work. First, it is particularly well organized. I really like the use of summary questions at the end of each chapter -- one more example of Weiner's easy reading style. And, if you pay attention, you'll find that Weiner is overly generous with thoughtful advice. Just as the title promises, this is a practical guide for creating a world class PR program for your company. Whether you are a start-up or a Fortune 50, Unleashing The Power Of PR may become your "how-to manual" for using PR to help achieve your objectives.
PR & Measurement book.......2006-07-19
Great book, full of useful practical examples. I would recommend to all in the business.

Customer Reviews:
A Good Read!.......2001-02-17
Author Rupert Eales-White emphasizes the importance of using active listening, focusing on a particular subject, and asking good open-ended questions to get productive results from interviews and conversations. He mixes a few examples with specific how-to principles outlining ways to structure effective conversations. This generally solid book has the feel of a textbook. Some readers may find it too structured or basic, since the author breaks down conversations into sentences with some detail. The book's approach may be more appropriate in organizational cultures where people prefer a focused style of questioning. Those who prefer a more informal, casual conversational style may find his approach less suitable. We at getAbstract.com recommend this book to human resource professionals, to those facing critical interviews, and to those who wish to think strategically about their conversational, information-gathering, or persuasive skills.
These Reviews Are Wacked.......2000-07-07
Why is it that all seven of the previous reviews(and the only ones) have been written by people (or a person) in Florida? Why are all the reviews generally long and the same size? Why are almost all the reviews written within a three month period, most one day after another one, when the book has been out for more than 2 years? My guess is that someone who has money to make from this book has done this. Who knows how good this book actually is? I wish bozos wouldn't flood the reviews like this. I for one am not going to purchase this book!

Improving Communication Skills.......1999-12-03
"Ask the Right Question! How to Get What You Want Every Time and In Any Situation" is an easy to read as well as enlightening book. It produces factual events, dialogues and explains what is effective or ineffective in how conversations are presented. Rupert Eales-White starts his book establishing that a good conversation is a planned conversation. If a person knows what their goal is in the conversation, they can ensure that the question is geared to achieving that goal. He points out that people must consciously and deliberately focus on the other person to know what to ask, when, and how often. His do's and don'ts on effective questioning are especially helpful. Demonstrates how to be effectively persuasive by setting up key strategies and exemplifying them in conversation. Dynamically coaches the reader on how to reach mutuality of people with different views and goals. Illustrates how to deal with conflict and provides tools to assist the reader in resolution of the conflicts. There are diagrams on how to set up an effective meeting, by careful planning, order, and understanding needs and common ground. An especially informative section was how to develop relationships. Focusing on how to talk to a boss, how a boss should talk with a subordinate, how to conduct an interview, and how to delight your client. Introducing you to the "discover kings" what, why, and how to generate open dialogues, resolve issues, solve problems, or seize opportunities. Offers tips on how to become more creative while harnessing the power of group discovery. Using a simple and concise style of showing the normal way in which most conversations go with a teenager, to asking the right kind of open question in order to elicit a response that is thought out. The open question being the key. The author focuses on teaching effective questioning skills as the key to improved communications and persuasion in many situations. Listening skills, context and concept development and approach formation are also reviewed for their benefits in achieving optimal communications. Suggestions are written in easy to read format that most people will be comfortable using, with many easy to understand examples or situations most of which we can relate a similar situation to. I highly recommend "Ask The Right Question - How to Get What You Want Every Time and In Any Situation" to everyone. Even if you think you communicate very well, I am sure there is still something beneficial to be learned from this book.
Excellent communicating tips and techniques.......1999-12-01
How many times has a situation ended with unsatisfactory or negative results? Ask the Right Question! How to Get What You Want Every Time and in Any Situation by Rupert Eales-White successfully guides the reader with his everyday narratives. Eales-White uses diagrams to detail his principles and theories. He demonstrates how to approach situations using the "art and science of effective questioning." Part I of this book reveals ineffective and effective examples as they apply to everyday situations. He discloses the tips and techniques to effective communication. Asking open questions instead of closed questions helps us to achieve our goal toward conversations with a purpose. In the sequence of questioning, we should look to discover elements which include "what, where, how, when, and who." Using the best attitude and approach, we can build a quality relationship. This book reminds us that the art of listening gives conversations with a purpose rely on. Starting with the development of key skills, Part II tells us the fundamental basis for key behavior. A path for the mutuality approach is needed to make us assertive and achieve mutual respect so the relationship will not suffer. The author tells us that by thinking logically, we become more creative and this leads to the fundamental improvements for efficiency and effectiveness of the work process. By becoming more persuasive, we can establish certain key strategies. Running an effective meeting means organizing ourselves as well as the meeting so we may reverse negative factors. Effective interviews should focus on assessing skills. Part III goes into key relationships to improve performance with the "boss." Relating effectively with subordinates includes either carrying out our leadership role or determining our leadership role. An effective leader acts as developer, motivator, and coach without using excessive control. The final chapter describes the successful goal for the successful client relationship and long-term partnership. Finally, Eales-White suggestions and examples bring his points clearly to the reader. These are typical and logical in everyday personal and business relationships. This is easy reading and good self-help book, which works toward a common sense goal. This book is a must for anyone, especially managers, at all levels so they may benefit from the excellent communicating tips and techniques offered by this author.

Not worth it.......2004-01-28
This wasn't worth the cost. There are less than 5 pages of anecdotal, unsupported (and on a few occasions incorrect) information. This is nothing more than an article that would appear in a bad business magazine. Don't bother wasting the money or your time.
