5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book!.......2007-08-03

This book was very helpful for me to determine what to say and how to convey my message professionally. I highly recommend this book to anyone in the workplace.

3 out of 5 stars Management Book.......2007-07-15

Another recommendation from my management class. Very useful examples for various situations. It will be very helpful and one of my reference books.

5 out of 5 stars Must have.......2006-12-24

I bought this while interviewing and now I keep it at work. I got the job I wanted with my top salary request. Useful, easy to understand and put into practice. Things you didn't realize about posture, facial expressions, simple phrasing, voice tone, etc. Great investment.

2 out of 5 stars Is this a vocabulary review?.......2005-09-10

I was more interested in reading about different perspectives in the business environment, and the most effective way to communicate between different roles. I did not buy the book to memorize long lists of words and phrases - the "good" ones and the "bad" ones.

The lists really put me off. They do get the right concepts across, in their own inept way, but they aren't all-inclusive, and it only stands to reason that sometimes they'll be wrong, depending upon the situation. Sure words are powerful, but delivery is everything. Body language, attitude, and neutral words used in the wrong way can have the same effect as words on the "bad" list, so the lists hardly make sense. I think the only time I will use these lists will be when I want to mock the late 90's and early 2000's with tired, overused phrases that I really can't stand to hear anymore. This book is at such a superficial level that it isn't even about communication.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent and essential book for everyone.......2004-10-07

I started teaching people to make PowerPoint presentations around 1992. Around 1995, I realized that many people were talking about themselves, so I suggested that the most important word they could use was "You." In 2003, I realized that people who wanted to be accepted by their audience should use the word "We." And then I picked up this book and read that the the three most important words in a business person's vocabulary were "we," "us," and "our." And that was on page eleven. At that point I was sold.

It's very easy to open your mouth and say your message in a way that alienates people. Very few people can negotiate difficult communications, but this book will help them do this. The book shows you words, phrases and body language to use and to avoid. It has numerous samples of conversations you can have with your fellow workers to put yourself in the best position.

The book covers all kinds of spoken business communications - the four largest sections include Getting a Job, speaking with your Supervisors, your Colleagues, and your Subordinates. Other groups are Prospective Clients, Current Clients, Handling Credit, Collection, and Customer Complaints, Vendors and Suppliers, and Lenders and Investors. In many cases you'll see the traps you can fall into.

You need to use this book with a little thought, in that the circumstances are usually similar to what you have to deal with, but not identical. But a few minutes' reading will change you from being a tongue-tied person to someone who achieves what you want.

I feel sorry for people who dismiss this and other similar books as "just common sense." I've known few people who possessed even a fraction of the skills shown in this book, and my own experience shows that I spent over ten years learning the information that appears in the beginning of the book.

Definitely a must-have, and a good book to build your general communications skills. And you'll stop coming away from meetings thinking, "I wish I could have said that better."

5 out of 5 stars Indespensible.......2007-06-16

This book is a work that is concise and well done. It covers the many aspects of Esoteric and Cabalistic correspondences with both English and Hebraic translations and their alpha-numerical relations. It includes Gematria, Hebraic, Angelic, Goetic, the correspondences of the 32 paths and troves more. It is simple to use, and a must have for anyone who is studying the occult arts in depth.
I have used this book for years and have found it to be another wonderful tool for my own work.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Reference.......2007-05-28

A good judge of the worth of a Reference book is how often you use it. I use this book almost every day -- usually more than once a day. It has most of the words one enounters as a Qabalist/Kabbalist, and some that one rarely sees. It has a more than adequate alphabetical list of Hebrew words and phrases with their corresponding Gematria. And, it has a list of numbers in the back with a healthy listing of words that correspond to those numbers.

Oh, there are a couple of things I don't particularly like about it. It has too much emphasis on Crowely in it (even with Sepher Sephiroth in the very back). Crowely didn't know the Hebrew language well enough to make a significant contribution in this regard. Also, his own list of words (Sepher Sephiroth) shows a bias that one can only call, strange. Anyway, to each his own.

There's also a single-minded preference for the Western Hermetic Tree as the only one viable, and any serious student of the Qabalah/Kabbalah knows that this is problemmatic at best.

Still, even with these reservations, I heartily recommend this book for anyone who is a student of any Qabalistic Tradition. There's definitely enough 'meat' in here to make it worthwile.

Peace Profound,

Neshamah

5 out of 5 stars In Response to the Distraught Reviewer.......2006-08-28

In response to the distraught reviewer, whose review starts, "If you're into ingnoring most of the jewish character..." I have to offer a disclaimer here for any would be potential buyers. True, if you're looking for a book that expounds the principles of the kabbalah while maintaining as much of the jewish historicity as possible, this book isn't the one. But I must say that this book neither claims to fulfill the latter criteria nor is it meant to. This book is meant as a reference tool for those studying the qabalah (spelling you'll usually see when this is the case) in it's capacity as the cornerstone of the western mystery tradition(golden dawn, stella matutina, A.A. etc). The fact that crowley's 777 is included should've made this quite apparent. A word of advice to everyone, but especially the afore mentioned reviewer, you might want to do a little research on any item you plan to purchase and decide to publicly denounce, as you'll kind of have a tendency to make yourself look silly, maybe even of less than average intelligence when you happen to be totally off base. So for those who would persue the "mysteries" you should definitely add this selection to your library as it is a great asset. For those wishing to study the historical and traditional jewish kabbalah your aims would be much better served through books by Aryeh Kaplan and others like them, as your main corpus of study will be the Sefer Yetzirah, the Zohar and the Bahir.

4 out of 5 stars Either you are experianced enough ..........2005-03-26

David Godwin has done a tremendous job. Yet his Encyclopediae can only be used in a limited manner by beginners. Either you are experianced enough or you ask for guidance by an experianced person.

Should you want to use it as a gematric reference then you definitively have to compare each word with an extensive Hebrew = Your-Mother-Tongue (big-print) dictionary first (or have studied Hebrew). The words'numeric values are sometimes surprising.

Also, if you are working with the "Tree of Life", you will want to decide which tradition you want to follow. They differ!

Aleister Crowley's "Sepher Sephiroth" (which I prefere to call "Sepher Qlippoth") is full of mistakes (!!!) - especially the Prefaces, and not only the Hebrew. Godwin may well be advised to leave it out in the 4th. Edition.

3 out of 5 stars it's a skimmer.......2006-06-13

okay, i usually enjoy reading body/mind texts, but this one was a bit dry. there is usefull and thought-proviking information within it, although i had to skip around and skim to find it. sometimes long-winded, sometimes self-reighteous, it is worth the read, but buy it used.

3 out of 5 stars A Mixed Bag.......2006-05-24

This book contains great insight and a very helpful, refreshing perspective of the human condition. However, it is also unintentionally humorous--and quite unhelpful--from the perspective that Alexander Lowen's primary aim is to be famous. He says so in a direct quote at the beginning of the book, and underscores his aim by citing his own work in footnote after footnote.

Half of the focus of this book is on delivering information. The other half is on delivering Alexander Lowen. That didn't work for me.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2001-03-09

Lowen's book does what they all do -- it gets us back in touch with our genuine, inner selves by making the emotional expression of oneself through the body the vehicle for authentic self-expression and spontaneity. It liberated me to feel more spontaneously without self-judgment and self-criticism, and to express my feelings without fear of judgment by others. If you're having trouble feeling or being fully conscious of yourself and your feelings, read Lowen's books and give some thought to Bioenergetic psychotherapy -- both will help tremendously.

This reference book has much to offer many. Indispensable for the novelist, with gore-filled chapters and multiple car crashes spewing limbs and guts, Dr. David Page's opus will also be treasured by medical enthusiasts, hypochondriacs, and those who like lively bathroom reading. From trench foot to crunched legs, massive hemothorax to flail chests, Body Trauma is educational, comprehensive, and a jolly good time.

Book Description

From murder/mystery to medical fiction - from trauma, mass casualties, or blunt trauma, surgeon and trauma expert Dr. David W. Page is a writer's best friend. Whether a writer's fictional character is a detective investigating a crime or a doctor racing down the hallways toward an emergency - it's a given that someone is hurt. Credible storytelling is the key to plausibility, and Dr. Page offers the perfect prescription.

Body Trauma explains what happens to body organs and bones maimed by accident or intent and the small window of opportunity for emergency treatment. Learn about what goes on in a hospital operating room and the personnel who initiate treatment. Use these facts and bring a new realism to stories and novels.

Here you'll find graphic explorations of serious bodily damage. You'll be able to work backward, deciding how severe a character's wounds should be and then writing the action that causes the pain. You'll put your characters in harm's way and mistreat them-believability-to within an inch of their fictional lives.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Anecdotes, please.......2006-09-05

Anecdotes from this author's experience would be more valuable than general statements. What does the injured person feel--what has the doctor heard people say about their injuries? What could other characters see?

For example if a person is choked, what happens first? Skin colour? Do the veins pop? How long does it take to die of asphyxiation? Skin colour at death?
If a person has frost bite what does s/he feel? What does someone else observe? How do these symptoms change?
How long can a shipwrecked person float in the sea before dying?

The Glasgow Coma Scale can be used by any writer describing levels of unconsciousness.

The feelings and reactions of the characters are the stuff of fiction. This book read like a basic text for an emergency room physician. Fine if your character is a doctor. Not so good if your story takes place elsewhere.

4 out of 5 stars A handy, quick reference.......2005-03-09

...for writers of murder mysteries and dark fiction, Body Trauma is concise in its detailing of injuries. While not a complete reference for all bodily harm, it is still a great reference for those emergency "I need to know how to describe this wound" moments which can occur in writing.

Page's book is a great filler for forensic and basic medical information, but it does have a few draw backs. One of these being the fact that shock and its effects are not taken into consideration. Another draw back is that some medical terminology is not very well defined and may require the reader to seek a medical dictionary.

Overall, Body Trauma is good as a quick reference but if you are in need of a more detailed account for your writing then seek it elsewhere.

3 out of 5 stars Unshocking!.......2002-05-06

Amazing -- a book about traumatic injuries that neglects any discussion of shock. I've had to borrow my partner's anatomy & physiology text for that part. There's some good basic info here, but I'll need to look elsewhere (& you will too) for detailed information on the kinds of wounds a character might sustain in sword fights or the treatments your characters might receive before the advent of modern Western medical techniques. Better news if your story takes place in the contemporary urban industrial world, with a modern emergency room or trauma center. But when it comes down to it, for most situations, this book isn't going to replace every good writer's necessary tool: research, research, research.

3 out of 5 stars Wanted more crunchy bits.......2001-12-17

There is a lot of good information in this book, but there were several lacks that made it less useful than I would have liked. Number one, it's not that useful if you're writing period fiction. I understand if this was beyond the scope of the author's undertaking, but some historical information would've helped me a lot.

Worse yet, especially as the book goes on, sometimes it begins to seem conventional, or to describe common scenarios, where fiction is concerned with the uncommon. For example, at one point it says "It takes an impressive hit to break the flat part of the shoulder blade." Like what? A blow with a club from a particularly strong person? A gunshot? I don't know. Worse yet, I was considering a scenario in which a character suffered a hip fracture in a fall. If the book had a section about falls (it doesn't), my questions would probably be answered, but as it is, information on hip fractures is really only given for fractures in the elderly---the common scenario. Plus, most of the information on battery/domestic violence is probably already known to anyone who has taken an introductory psychology course in college.

Especially in the last chapters (domestic violence, torture, etc)., the book is pretty thick with "flavor text" that doesn't do a whole lot to impart the technical information I bought the book for. I would prefer the author had zapped all the Hemingway quotes if it would have let me have a section on falls and other massive impacts, or even just known what, if anything, could break the shoulder blade or hip of a young, healthy person.

This book has helped me at times. The chapters on head, chest, and abdominal injuries, and the one on temperature injuries are particularly good. I only wish it had been more dense with information and considered more of the unusual viewpoints common in fiction.

4 out of 5 stars Generally very useful.......2000-10-24

Like most of the "Howdunit" series, this is a useful volume that every aspiring mystery writer should own. It's full of helpful, often detailed descriptions of various types of wounds and injuries, how they're treated, and, if they're not immediately fatal, whether they could lead to death or long-term disability. The chapter on torso injuries was especially good: it's not intuitively obvious to a non-medical person (like me) what the consequences of a particular type of wound or blow would be, and this made it much clearer. I liked the author's use of quotations from mystery and adventure writers to illustrate his points. And, although the tone is fairly dry, I found this volume easier going than others in the series, mostly because he used comparisons effectively and included easy-to-understand graphics.
Some quibbles:
1. The book is very uneven. Some chapters are detailed and comprehensive, while I found others sketchy: for example, the description of types of gunshot wounds was a good general overview, but it didn't give enough specific information to answer the question I had. A chapter-by-chapter list of references, or suggestions for further reading, would have been useful too.
2. The author occasionally veers off into "Here's a nifty idea for your mystery novel." Some of them ARE indeed nifty ideas, but I'd never use them, because I'm sure the first person to read this book already has! I think the book would have been more useful to more writers if he'd just stuck to providing the facts.

Book Description

Making the Gods Work for You presents internationally renowned author Caroline W. Casey's remarkable doctrine of Visionary Activist Astrology. In this reverently irreverent mystery school disguised as a book (in which each of the planetary gods is a professor), we are invited to think of our lives as spiritual detective novels. For example, Venus teaches us that our affinities and quirks are clues to our unique mission and contribution to the world. The astrological language of the psyche is a tool for deciphering and revitalizing this sense of mission. Casey teaches you how to expand your range of intimacy with the ten parts of yourself represented by the planets, here called gods. You will learn how to use this language to reverence and feed the forces of your psyche that connect you to very real external forces. This book intends to catalyze a movement to engage the imagination of all people with a sense of humor and a desire to do collaborative good in the world.

Expanding on the ideas first presented in her popular audiotape series, Inner and Outer Space, Casey explores the archetypes at the heart of human relationships, aspirations, and spiritual quests. In an engaging narrative enlivened by stories, fables, exercises, and meditations developed through her work as an astrological counselor, she provides a practical system of personal and collective liberation. Making the Gods Work for You provides us with innovative principles to live by and rituals inviting us to become active, dynamic participants in the dance of life. We can then become increasingly conscious players on the team of creation, capable of sharing our gifts with the world at this crucial historical time.

Amazing book. Offers a very elevated and intelligent way of integrating astrology into one's physical/spiriual/emotional life in a proactive way. Astrology is the weather and we are the sailors.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorites.......2006-01-16

Caroline Casey's book is not a technical read! And yet... she conveys the intricate pattern of planetary influence with a depth that keeps me coming back to this book. She has stories that include ways of honoring particularly intense transits. For so many, learning astrology is not what they want to do. They want to understand their chart. If you have been told that you are going through a transit and you want more practical information for what that might look like... this is your book. If you are an astrologer... this book brings it back to the fine patterns in the sand that you just do not see in the other - very fine - books designed to break it down by study. What you will not get is a cooking recipe for planet in sign to house.... etc. I find myself coming back, frequently to this book to regain the respect that can be lost in too much study!

1 out of 5 stars Great introduction to subject matter, no follow through.......2004-06-15

This is a terrible book! There, I've said it. Very bold words to say in light of all the other rave reviews. I hope I can explain myself...

"Making the Gods Work for You" tries tackle more than your basic sun-sign astrology book. It covers your birth chart, which is comprised of all the planets positions relative to your birth time and location.

To me this means covering three items:
1) The role and psychology associated with each of the eight other planets, the sun and the moon.

2) The types of astrological interplay. This is a neat way of saying it means something special when three planets align in a triangle, or four planets in a square, or two planets "crossing" each other, and so on.
3) How to determine your own birth chart.

As you can guess the book falls down in at least one of these categories for me.

The good news is the book excels at the basic explanation of the planets; associated personality types, inner strengths and struggles, etc. Very well written and a quite enjoyable read.

The book provides a reference to a website where a free, basic birth chart can be obtained online.

However, the book fails utterly at connecting the two. There is no explanation of the meaning behind the planets' relative positions. None. Nada.
Maybe all nine planets were aligned at my birth time. Or they form two perfect squares. Who knows what that means? Not you from reading this book.

Of course you _could_ pay money on the website to get this explained... ;-)

5 out of 5 stars Don't loan this book to anyone!!!.......2003-12-21

A very intelligent, practical friend of mine makes astrology part of her life. (How did she know i'd find my dream job in June?) Well, to understand astrologicial thinking better, i bought this book. Very lively writing, clear, with quality humor. The author writes many things i've heard previously only from my friend, not from other astrology books. I read bits of it over the phone to my friend, later brought it to her. Now she's having a great time reading it, and i'm still waiting to get it back....THAT's a sign of a good book!

5 out of 5 stars Suitable for beginners but good for any level astrologer.......2002-08-26

This book is a delight. Caroline Casey has a degree in semiotics and a marvelous wit, describing planetary energies through anecdotes, myths, and sacred wisdom, all with a light heart, and a reverent irreverence.

Perhaps it's best to share a quote. I take this from the section on Uranus:

"To grow shiitake mushrooms, one plants the spores in a stick and lets it sit for a year. Then you must strenuously pound the stick to awaken the dormant life within. For the same reason, during midlife and Uranus transits, we get pounded. Like the spores, we are comfortably snoozing when suddenly, "What the...?!" Thump! Thump! Thump!

We invoke Uranus by posing the question, "If I feel agitated, restless, or on the brink of a discovery, where in my life do I want lightning to strike?...."

If you've got your basics down and want to know more about the planets, or about your transits, this book is such a good choice.

Book Description

Itchy palms...cold feet...a pain in the neck. Not a day goes by that our bodies don't "speak" to us through tickles and tingles, belches and bellyaches -- and psychiatrist Martin Rush takes us on an entertaining, enlightening exploration as he teaches us how to decode these secret signs and signals.

Rush reasons that many of the twitches and twinges we experience may have psychological roots, rather than physical ones. The runny nose, lower backache, and cough signify some underlying wants or needs that the body is trying to convey. Because we aren't always aware of our feelings, the sudden symptom may be a physiological way of drawing our attention to an unnoticed emotion. By recognizing these signals, and then deciphering them, we can better understand the meanings in our aches, pains, and other symptoms.

So, if you're itching to know why you have sudden chronic sneezing attacks, or why your eyelid occasionally twitches uncontrollably, or what is behind that unexplainable rash, then perhaps it's time for a visit with Dr. Rush. The quintessential example of the mind-body connection, Decoding The Secret Language of Your Body makes everyone aware of even the most subtle interaction between feelings and body responses.

An interesting down to earth way to discover why we do the things we do and how we can change.

5 out of 5 stars the body doesn't lie, listen to it........2006-08-11

We've all heard the saying: "it's all in your head" many times before. But as much as we try to calm ourselves over certain matters, it does no good in relieving us of physical symptoms. This does not in any way mean that no illnesses aren't psychosomatic in origin though. The body is so complex that we are simply not aware of the exact origin of our illnesses.

After reading this book as well as "Molecules of Emotion" by Candice Pert, I'm thoroughly convinced that most of peoples illnesses have a psychosomatic origin. Martin Rush makes no hard and fast claims and does not claim to have all of the answers. In fact, he put a disclaimer in the front of the book. What he does however is explain what he has learned over the years as a practicing physician and Psychiatrist. He makes a good case that many of the things that ail people have a mental origin. Everything from the common cold, asthma and kidney stones to appendicitis often have mental origins. He discusses how asthma is a crying out for love and affection from one's mother (at least that's how it starts). Personally, I've suffered (sometimes still suffer) from asthma and was split away from my mother at a young age. I can remember within a reasonable degree when I had my first asthma attack and it happened to be the same time I was split from my mother. Rush has a similar example in the book where he was able to cause the patients asthma to flair up via hypnosis and then stop it.

One of the most intriguing aspects of this book is the first part "whispers from the body" where he discusses things such as blushing, yawning, sneezing, twitching eyes, cold hands and feet. The origins of these "whispers" are consistent with what I've read in books on body language such as "I Know What Your Thinking" by Lillian Glass. Also, from personal observations and being mindful of how my body reacts to different things lends a lot of credibility to mind-body connection. I've also been able to come up with my own theories based on my own observations. Consequently, I've become much better at reading what other people are thinking. It seems almost magical how one can learn how to read people by being mindful of physical signals we all give off. The more we try to supress these signals, the more they will manefest themselves in ways in which we would never imagine.

From reading Pert's book, ("Molecules of Emotion") I well know that our emotions are tied to the flow of peptides in the human body and when we supress emotions it restricts the flow of peptides, leading to illness and even disease which is the gist of this fascinating book. It's not our emotions which cause us problems, it's our suppression of emotions which leads to problems.

      5 out of 5 stars Elegant simplicity.......2006-12-20

I have had my copy of Rumi for some time. I have just recently picked it up again. While I had several old favorites, my dog-eared pages marking them, I found some new ones that now captivate.

The elegant simplicity--spare verse, carefully crafted structure--of these poems is mesmerizing. Enigmatic and ecstatic they will lift your spirit.

5 out of 5 stars Solid Sufi (ecstatic religious) poetry.......2000-08-18

Birdsong contains 53 short poems that are reworkings of the translation by A. J. Arberry, a major scholar of Sufism.

Not all of the poems have any direct relationship to birds, rather the birdsong of the title refers to a common metaphor in mystic traditions e.g. The Conference of the Birds, a major Sufi work.

Barks, as usual, provides excellent translations; he truly makes the poetry of Rumi accessible to the average reader (as compared to some scholarly translations that are precise but no longer poetry or that require technical vocabulary).

His selection of poems is also excellent; they are poems that encourage meditative thought. An example: "Stars burn clear / all night till dawn. / Do that yourself, and a spring / will rise in the dark with water / your deepest thirst is for. "

5 out of 5 stars All I want now to do or hear is poetry!.......1999-11-11

Rumi is brilliant in his acuteness. Birdsong only makes me want to learn and read more about this impressionable thinker. His words truly hold the essence of life. Recommneded to all who adore poetry.

      2 out of 5 stars Where's Rumi?.......1999-05-04

Persian period of that time is complex and formal. Mowlana is a master of poetry as well as a master of Sufi. His depth, artistry, and complexity is missing. I also find it a little deceptive to call oneself a "translator" when one does not read or speak the language from which he is supposedly translating.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction to a medieval master........1998-09-01

Although any work this short is going to have shortcomings, this is an excellent introduction to the precision, wisdom and wit of Rumi. A great gift and a great read.
