Great reference/cheat sheet.......2007-07-26
I have used this book on all my performance reviews, it is so good, that I could not stop picking phrases from it, and my boss had to tell me to be "less verbose" in my self assessment!
Book for new managers.......2007-07-15
This book was recommended in one of my management classes. I was able view it during one of the class breaks. Immediately, I knew it will save me time and effort. Many useful phrases to help and prompt thoughts for reviewing team members.
A good guide .......2007-07-05
I purchased this guide for the supervisors on my team because it gives phrases to use when appraising employees. Its also gives phrases to use when writing awards or other evaulations of performance. The guide is organized into different areas-teamwork, communication skills, productivity, etc. which helps find helpful phrases to use. This guide is simple but elegant in its usefulness.
Who needs this? .......2007-06-12
If I sat on a toilet all day thinking of sycophantic half-sentences, this is probably what I'd come up with. I hate to think about what the brain-dead, incompetent boob who needs a book like this looks like.
It's management speak like this crap that inspired movies like Office Space and television shows such as The Office and Just Shoot Me. On that note, maybe I should give this book five stars.
One thing's for certain, anyone in your office who orders this book should be fired immediately.
Helpful Tool.......2007-05-16
Very helpful tool in writing performance reviews and avoiding redundancy when writing performance reviews.

Customer Reviews:
Not for beginners and not for professionals.......2007-05-03
It is hard to tell who this book is geared towards. A novice should not take on any event that is as over their head; as most of the event situations that are listed in the book are. A professional would know from experience the answers to most of the questions or they would have the common sense to take care of any odd situation that arose. The book may be helpful to assistant managers or banquet captains, but most houses have their own way of doing things. Interesting read and a good refresher, buy used.
Very useful Hand Book.......2007-03-10
It was very useful to me as I used it to brak into the wedding/event business. It presents a very corporate approach, yet it seems to uncover all kinds of secrets of the event world that are hidden to the public eye.
This Book is Alright.......2006-08-09
Being an avid reader of Event Planning literature, I must say that this book is alright.
Packed with Knowledge!.......2005-10-14
Details, details, details. That's really what successful event planning is all about, and that's the key to this very successful event-planning manual. Author Judy Allen notes, lists, copes with and gives an example of virtually every detail in planning anything from a sedate corporate event in a major city to a huge celebration on a remote island. She provides examples galore plus tips, questions and answers, sample cost sheets and schedules. How much floor space does a person need to be comfortable in a tent? Answer: 20 square feet. How many bathrooms should be available for a party? Answer: One per 75 guests. And don't forget to ask about the stemware, adequate parking and even the photographer's back-up camera battery. This author seems to have thought every contingency, as the book's ambitious title promises. Her one glaring omission is that she does not include the party planner's fee - our guess is that she'd be worth it. We highly recommend this well-organized, very practical book to all event planners. Don't send out press releases for your party without consulting Judy Allen.
Great book.......2005-10-01
This is a great book for anyone interested in working in the event planning field.

Step-by-step guide to creating compelling, memorable presentations

Then, this presentation guru shows you how to combine those tips with today's hottest technologies for sharper, stronger visuals. * How to prepare different types of charts -- pie, bar, column, line, or dot -- and when to use each
* Lettering size, color choice, appropriate chart types, and more
* Techniques for producing dramatic eVisuals using animation, scanned images, sound, video, and links to pertinent websites
Customer Reviews:
Say It with charts.......2007-08-27
Very good as a quick guide for building presentations based on data and charts, but a little more information about when to use it type of chart would be very usefull
Getting the point across.......2006-03-02
As an equity analyst, consultant, and communication specialist, I saw - and made - dozens of colorful presentations with the best charts that excel can draw that simply didn't work.
After the failed presentation, a consultant or analyst who knows how to get his point across will draw a simple diagram or chart on a white board that will be far more convincing and effective than the entire PowerPoint presentation.
This book is for the person who wants to get point across.
Consider it part of a broad business education.......2005-10-25
When one considers the amount of time/money they spend on improving their job skills, it would seem obvious that a high-value read like 'Say it with Charts' would be worth some consideration. It provides a framework for using charts to your advantage- and not just within oral presentations. If anything, this book will increase your willingness to use charts to your advantage when selling an opinion. It forces the user to think about exactly what it is they are trying to say - and then produce a professional looking chart to relay that message.
Any edition will do - the content will not change with the times. The underlying principles can be quite powerful and can be the difference between a simple presentation and one which elicites praise.
Say It With Charts: The Executive's Guide to Visual Communication .......2005-10-24
The book is tremendous for anybody who wants to a make a presentation effective by making it easy to understand.
helpful - nothing more need be said.......2004-05-04
Full disclosure - I used to work at IBM and as an entry level consultant with an MBA there the first thing you are is the .ppt whipping post. That being said, the IBM training program covers many of the concepts from this book. Why?? Simple, they work. Is it the be all and end all? No. The only thing that can help you assemble good content is practice, practice, practice - with a healthy dose of constructive criticism from someone that knows what they are talking about. I just got through a days worth of presentations last Friday to one of the most senior technology people at a major government agency. All I can say is that I really, really, really wish that the people presenting before and after me had taken 5 mintues to review this book before getting in front of that crowd - it would have prevented some spectacular flamouts.

Well-known author and consultant Howard Shenson shows consultants, educators and trainers how to enter and flourish in the lucrative and fast-growing seminar business--an estimated 3-to-4 billion industry. Provides practical details on selecting facilities, writing brochures, advertising, using direct mail, add-on materials and much more. Features checklists, tables and sample forms that help make planning easy and efficient.
Customer Reviews:
Very dated.......2007-07-30
While this book gives a good starting point for a seminar newbie, it is quite hampered by its dated material. All statistics and pricing examples are from the late 1980's. There is no recognition anywhere in the book that the Internet exists, PowerPoint can be used in presentations, etc. For instance, you are warned against using carbon copy paper. Hello? Good in 1990, but needs a serious and thorough updating to reflect current trends and technologies.
Dated but very good.......2006-06-26
This is a good introductory book for those that need to develop and promote successful seminars and workshops. The book covers what one needs to know about developing a program, market testing, setting the right fees, marketing, promotion, advertising and publicity. The reader is provided with useful practical tips and advice that I have used to good effect.
The book is well written in simple English that is easy to follow and understand. Despite the book being a bit dated, the advice it provides is still relevant and very useful and practical. Even the veteran has something to learn from this excellent book.
Those who wish to capitalize on the growing business of seminars, workshops, conferences and training classes are recommended to read this book for guidance and directions.
Very good service........2005-09-17
Book was sent in a timely manner and I received it in good shape. Thanks.
Great information.......2004-06-23
This book is one of the important books on this topic. I have included this book in my personal library and have referred many people to this book.
Early in my business I provided "public" seminars and this book provided some great advice and tips.

Practical pre-sales demo advise.......2007-03-06
This is an excellent how-to book for improving your discovery and demo skills for enterprise software sales.
Chapter 4 (Demo Crime Files) and Chapter 5 (Discovery Process) more that justify the price of the book.
I sincerely wish that all presales engineers would read this book before presenting to customers.
Just what my sales force needed.......2007-02-20
I read Demo2Win and fell in love with the concept. After years of demonstrating software, I always felt like I could have done better if I had more tools. Robert's book gave me those tools. The tools I remember from the book were simple. Just be a little different than the other person or company. The Discovery Phase in the long run will save you and your customer time. You will find out if you can supply what the customer needs or leave it to someone else to fulfill their needs. Why waste time. The Demo Crimes made me cringe because I know I've committed a few of them over and over. Now I won't commit those crimes because it's been brought to my attention by Robert.
After I read the book I asked my boss to read it. He read it and ordered about 30 copies for all of our salesforce to read. Each and every person that read it then praised it. It was kind of like the lights went on in everybody's head.
I'd recommend this book to any salesperson. I've already read it more than three times. I take it on each flight I make and read at least a few pages each time.
Thanks, Robert.
realistic demo experiences.......2006-01-03
Excellent Book!!!
Since 1988, I have conducted many system software demonstrations!!
Demonstrating to Win touches all of my experiences from small client engagements to some one pulling out the plug of a mini AS/400!
By reading this book, I felt like you were a spider on the wall recording my many demo successes and failures.
Good Job.

Showware - Showing Them Your Soft Wares.......2005-01-24
Demonstrating To Win is an exhaustive book on the topic of demonstrating software by experienced hand Robert Riefstahl. The author delves into the subject at hand with precision and detail through chapters like Demonstrating Is Not An Art!, Important Demonstration Concepts, The Demo Crime Files! and Your Demonstration Setting. There can hardly be a better resource than Demonstrating To Win for professionals in the industry. The book covers the obvious, mundane and elementary to the detailed nuances and tricks of the trade and aims to articulate the author's main thrust that in order to win the day the presenter has to build a bridge that the prospect wants to cross in order to reach you (and your software product).
Each chapter is augmented by a brief summary which offers a synopsis of the topic covered and the author practices what he preaches by offering his experience in plain language. There certainly are a couple of instances where the reader will notice the book's age and its year 2000 publication date, most notably during the technical discussions, but Riefstahl's guide is comprehensive and advantageous all the way through and still relevant to those demonstrating software to potential customers.
Good advice on demos, but methodology is dated .......2004-12-01
Riefstahl 's book is all about doing demos; what works and what doesn't for doing software demos in front of prospects. You won't find a lot about the overall sales process found in so many other books, just giving good demos and closely related information.
The author is analytic, but is able to explain ideas in plain language. The compelling value behind this book is Riefstahl 's real world experience giving lots of demos, in different settings, with a few different products he's sold. He urges us to not think of great software demos as a mysterious art, but rather as the result of good preparation and smart tactics.
A recurring theme, and indeed the unwritten theme of the book, is to build a "bridge" for your prospect to cross over from their world of comfort (usually no change) to the one you are presenting. Things seeming trivial or obvious to us as demonstrators can be confusing or offensive to a prospect. The author fills the book with practical ways to put yourself in the clients' place, then design and execute a demo to show why the customer should trust you across the bridge they are so uncertain about. It's all about the prospects' needs, not just features the sales person likes to show.
The chapter called "Demo Crime Files" is about 20% of the book. This detailed list of 28 "what not to do's" such as bad PowerPoint slides, arguing with the prospect, how to make a boring/irrelevant demo, etc. helps make the book well worth the price.
Another 20% of the book is on "Discovery". Throughout the book, Riefstahl stresses the need to perform a deep and thorough discovery of your prospects' business, personnel, etc. before designing and presenting the demo for the buyers. He has successfully used this approach, but this is a topic where I have to get off his bandwagon somewhat. I don't disagree that at least some discovery is necessary, but my limited experience has been that the Discovery methodology of this book may not be feasible. I just don't think many customers today will give as much access to key personnel (and especially not executives) as the author assumes. Prospects will invest some personnel time (with a vendor they don't know very well) on the phone and some in person, but not a lot in either case. Riefstahl offers some good guidelines on how to get the most out of discovery and how to pitch it so it won't seem like an imposition. It's very important to him, so I should probably be more open-minded, but I am skeptical. What he advocates as a sunk cost Discovery could otherwise be billable as pre-sales professional consulting - it's that detailed. I think Riefstahl is tech savvy and experienced enough to pull this off for his deals, but I'm not sure it's a feasible approach for most of us.
One other assumption made is that the demo is very important to the prospect so they will give it a lot of their time. One and two day demonstrations just don't seem to happen anymore as far as I can tell, but the book is written as if they are common. In fairness to the author, I think the business climate has changed for software evaluation since this book was written. Today, the demo (especially an initial one) is just one more meeting in a process the prospects' key personnel have to work through (with multiple vendors) while trying to get their regular job done at the same time. My goal is for a product demo to be compelling enough to get a lot more of their time after they've first seen it; I can't assume this before they have.
I like the book and being relatively new to the sales field (as a tech sales engineer doing demos), I got quite a bit from it. There are several take-aways I can definitely improve upon. The book is an easy read and has a good index. I'm tempted to give it a higher rating, but I can't because of the assumptions about the initial demo being so long and important to the prospect (it's often not the case) and the access/skill required to do the full Discovery Riefstahl insists is vital. These assumptions are woven throughout the book and its method. Nevertheless, I have benefited from the book.

Book Description
Open Space Technology: A User's Guide is just what the name implies: a hands-on, detailed description of facilitating Open Space Technology (OST). Written by the originator of the method - an effective, economical, fast, and easily-repeatable strategy for organizing meetings of between 5 and 1,000 participants - this is the first book to document the rationale, procedures, and requirements of OST. OST enables self-organizing groups of all sizes to deal with hugely complex issues in a very short period of time. This practical, step-by-step user's guide details what needs to be done before, during, and after an Open Space event.
Customer Reviews:
Useful handbook of a counterintuitive approach.......2007-03-02
Open Space Technology is nearly identical to the "unconference" approach to workshop and event planning that's currently fashionable (see "Foo Camp" or "Bar Camp" or many other geek-oriented "camps). Basically, abandon a traditional agenda and force the workshop participants to self-organize a schedule, goals, and work. It's profoundly counter-intuitive, everyone assumes that a strict plan is necessary...but it turns out to work. People really enjoy participating in an event where their opinions matter, and where everyone's responsible for raising issues they find important.
This book can come across as annoyingly new agey and dippy at times (I see someone's tagged it "embracing group genius" here on Amazon...your mileage may vary a bit from that). It's probably more helpful in getting you the facilitator into the right mindset, and encouraging you not to fall back on the crutches of detailed schedules or keynote speakers. It's pretty dated when it talks about using computers in your event, but that doesn't really matter.
Bible of Open Space.......2006-07-12
This is a very good hand-book for open space newcomers.Easy to understand and easy to read.I strongly suggest this book for anybody who want to start learning open space technology
One of the most valuable books in the world.......2003-12-26
As Brookings revealed in 2000, most of the world's 10000 biggest organisations don't yet have the measures to govern the vast majority of value now produced in services and knowledge businesses because as our networking age blossoms value dynamics are mainly intangible, deeply woven into the human relationships we self-organise, not for precise planning and overpowering command and control from the top. Value multiplication is a core gravity which should be embedded in everyone's right to work, learn , behave openly.
Whilst some of those of the transparency communities interlinking at http://www.valuetrue.com open source the simplest maths of intangible systems, others have much more fun voting on what are the safest methods to protect your system from doing an Andersen or a NASA self-destruction of its greatest purpose. Open Space is voted as the number 1 method uniting transparency communities, and because of its simplicity I predict it will always be the gateway to anyone who prizes self-organising, a term which actually means making the most of everyone's time, learning and passions to make a diffeernce to our overall purpose. A very valuable book, which in my dreams would start any MBA course or any professional's training.
Open Space is now 21 years young and over 100000 experiences mature and networked by people who are both most open with their knowlhow and conscious that you learn something subly more about human relationship trust from every Open Space you particpate in. It is as near as organisations (seen as human relationship infrastructures) can get to a modern day miracle, and long may Harrison light up the open world. See his latest deep concerns with conflict resolution applications at http://www.practiceofpeace.com
a "How to" book.......2001-06-18
I recommend using open space tehcnology and/or other large scale intervention techniques to mine the collective emotional intelligence of a group of people (this may be your company, or people from an acadamic field you belong to).
This book gives you the details on HOW to organize and facilitate an open space meeting - (what kind of location you need, how to organize the room, how to use break up rooms, how to facilitate, ...). You'll also get imporatnt rules and lessons for making this technology work. In short, it's pretty good at doing this "HOW TO" part.
WARNING: If you want to know WHY it works and if you want some examples, there are 2 other books to take a look at:
- tales from Open space (Harrison Owen, Editor, 1995)
- Expanding our now (Harrison Owen, 1997)
Good luck!
Patrick E.C. Merlevede, MSc -- author of "7 Steps to Emotional Intelligence"
A Good Read!.......2001-04-24
Harrison Owen presents a hands-on, step-by-step manual for putting on an open space technology workshop. In OST workshops, participants basically set and facilitate the agenda with some guidance from a facilitator. Here, the book's examples are particularly handy. Owen suggests conference duration, agenda and techniques including how to set up a meeting, invite participants, prepare the logistics and meeting site, facilitate activities and more. While these workshops generally involve hundreds of people, you can also put on an OST event with as few as five. If you want to read gripping business philosophy, look elsewhere - this is a practical how-to manual, a task it accomplishes quite well. We [...] recommend this informative guided tour of the OST process to those who want to know how, because they already know why

Reference book.......2007-06-10
Great resource for anyone wanting to learn more about running meetings in an organizational setting. Seems to me lots of meeting attendees think they know how to make motions and take actions but in my experence most meeting attendees do not know the basic rules of order. I use this small easy to understand book monthly as a reference at my Chamber of Commerce. A must have if you serve as a member of any Board of Directors or formal meeting group.
It's a practical guide to Robert's Rules.......2007-03-12
This is a nice book for the money. It's easy to read. It has a good layout.
Roberts Rules made easy.......2005-10-24
I found the book as represented and easy to read and it has all the simple answers that you might need quickly. Reading the full Roberts Rules of Order revised can take time this makes it easy to pick out the simple explanation and answers. Nice to take to the meetings for quick reference.
Roberts Rules in Plain English.......2005-10-21
The book is a decent primer and is certainly more readable than Robert's original book. Of course the original and all of its editions remain an example of very incomprehensible and convoluted language even for its era. However, I have to handle large meetings of very strong-willed, intelligent people, so I found the "Plain English" book not very useful. I need to know the details and complexities of handling important meetings so that I make the right decisions. I will stick with the more sophisticated texts.
Robert's Rules in Plain English.......2005-09-16
Was very disappointed. I thought the book would have contained the entire book of Robert's Rules written in language easily understood by all who read it. The book I received was very brief in dealing with situations that arise during a meeting. It dealt with very few situations.

SMART Facilitation - A very good read.......2007-07-24
Well written -- brief and to the point. Valuable even if you only read the first and last chapters. If you think you want to work on Facilitation skills -- get this book!
Good book to teach facilitation techniques.......2007-05-25
This book starts with good real time situations to describe the common problems in facilitation and how to overcome them. It helps both beginners and serious facilitators. Through a series of real life examples it teaches the best practices for effective facilitation.
An Excellent Resource!.......2007-02-13
I am the Principal of Cohesion Inc, a marketing & business consulting organization, and also a part-time course director in the marketing faculty of the Schulich School of Business, York University in Toronto, Canada.
Facilitation is an important part of my work and teaching, and as such I regularly review literature on this subject to discover new insights and techniques with which to experiment.
Whether you are new to facilitation or already an experienced practitioner, this book will serve as an excellent resource to build your skills in this area.
Best book on facilitation I've read.......2006-01-29
This is a wonderful, practical, well-written book, with 60 facilitation secrets that are worth far, far more than the price of the pages. In fact, I learned more from this book than I did from a nationally recognized Advanced Facilitation course for $1700.
The chapter on consensus-building, which introduces 4 common techniques for building consensus (Delineation, Strengths and weaknesses, Merge and Weighted Scoring) I found particularly useful. The 6 high-level agendas for common facilitated sessions (among them process improvement and issue resolution) are a must for every facilitator.
I would recommend this book most highly for facilitators who want to build on their existing skills rather than as an introduction to the field, as some of the secrets (those related to dealing with dysfunctional behavior, for example) assume some foundational facilitation skills. However, anyone interested in the field would benefit greatly from the secrets in this book. A truly great addition to the facilitator's library!
Great Book For The Executive Suite.......2005-06-02
The Secrets of Facilitation is a great book for facilitators, from those about to facilitate their first session to those of us who have been practicing for over 25 years. I counted over 200 Post-Its and notes in my copy. Beyond what we facilitators gain, the "secret" of The Secrets is the value this book will have to those in Executive Suites and serving on Boards.
All leadership teams are searching for new leaps in productivity. They are lean as can be, yet uncomfortably aware that the majority of ideas delivered by consultants (60%, 75%%, 90%+?) come from their own people. They need an alternative. Their answer lies in the first secret revealed by Michael Wilkinson, "You can achieve more effective results when solutions are created, understood, and accepted by the people impacted." The rest of the book reveals how to do so. Now executives can choose to use in-house facilitators and their own people to develop and deliver the majority of solutions, and outside facilitators and top talent consultants only when truly needed.
Most executives I meet have experienced a session of the caliber delivered by a true Master Facilitator like Michael. Many can recall exciting, highly successful sessions facilitated by a real professional. What they've lacked is confidence that similar successes can be repeated consistently. The Secrets of Facilitation reveals a set of skills that can be learned and can permeate any organization. Michael's efforts in researching, teaching, and now writing this book will accelerate the adoption of facilitation as a core approach for leaders in any organization.
I only know Michael from participating in sessions he's facilitated, my recent association with the International Association of Facilitators, and through reputation of even some of my own favorite clients who recommend him as "The Best". Even so, yes, I do have a bias for recommending Michael's book. First, with the success of his book there will be more business for all facilitators. Second, our own firm's focus is turning more towards facilitating virtual teams, where getting our clients to understand The Secrets becomes even more important!
Certainly if you can schedule Michael to facilitate a session, grab the opportunity, he is that good. Better yet, buy copies of his book, give them out to your full leadership team, and embrace facilitation as a way of doing business.

Meeting the Press.......2005-04-23
When being interviewed by media, it is tempting to do a `brain dump,' and give them as much information as you can. This can backfire, though. Faced with an information overload, the journalist has to pick-and-choose through all the data to construct her story. She probably has room only for a few of your points, and she may not choose the ones that you would like.
Politicians understand this. When they do interviews, they focus on `talking points.' The politician prepares by selecting three or four points they want to get across during the interview. The preparation allows them to get their message across clearly and succinctly.
You should do something similar to this to prepare for your encounters with the media. In 'Media Training 101,' Sally Stewart recommends that you have five focused and concise Key Message Points.
Key Message Point #1 is a general statement about your company. It might include facts such as how long you have been in business, what you sell, or where you are located.
Key Message Point #2 gives financial information. For example, revenues, growth percentage or number of units sold. Don't overload on statistics. Choose something easy to understand.
Key Message Point #3 identifies your target market. What characteristics do your customers share? Are they consumers or businesses? Are they in a specific industry? Are they located in the same geographic area? What need do they have that your product or service fills? You might also mention your share of the market, if it is impressive.
Key Message Point #4 addresses the company's future growth. Are you expanding into foreign markets, creating new products (or identifying new uses for existing products) to appeal to new types of customers, opening a new location or adding more employees?
Key Message Point #5 can be anything not covered in the other four points. It is a way to point out the uniqueness of your company. You might mention awards or other recognition your company has received, the specialized training or experience of your staff, or whatever you would want customers and the public to know about your business and what makes it special.
Once you have your Key Message Points, you are prepared for an interview at any time. This is important, because you won't always have a lot of advance notice of an interview. In some cases, you will have only minutes (if that) to prepare. With your Key Message Points you will know what to say-and when to stop talking.

Must read for emerging companies.......2005-03-22
PR can be the most effective guerilla marketing available to companies that are trying to capture a bigger piece of the pie in their niche. Ms. Stewart has taken away the fear any executive may feel in dealing with the media and PR by writing a logical step by step book. I can definitely testify that her professionalism and realism in how to deal with the media has had a major effect on our company.
Excellent.......2004-11-26
Media Training 101 gives strong fundamentals for anyone new in dealing with the news media. This book should be a part of any PR pro's library.
Packed with Knowledge!.......2004-03-02
This book gives you the essentials about dealing with the media, starting with interviews and calls from reporters. Sally Stewart, former journalist and PR practitioner, delivers the nitty-gritty. Her advice to recognize reporters' financial and emotional pressures is particularly useful. Reporters have two clear priorities, she says, to write good stories and to go home. If you want their good will, try a little respect, she suggests, although she displays considerable cynicism and negativity about them. Her lessons include getting reporters to pay attention and which reporters to contact and how, be it by phone, e-mail or fax. Stewart tells you how to deal with unexpected calls from the press, and how to decide whether or not you want to be part of a story. If you do, here's how to make the most of it. And if you don't, this book tells you how to extricate yourself, if possible. Along the way Stewart explains how to dress for a television appearance. If this paragraph mentions any core skill you don't already have, we have a newsflash for you: get the book.
Don't meet the media until you have read this book.......2003-12-05
I highly recommend Media Training 101. Every one needs media training- and this book is a great place to start. Wonderful tips and guidlines for the beginner and the pro. I urge you to buy this book before you even start your PR campaign.
