5 out of 5 stars Happy with this text.......2007-10-13

The book is easy to read and follow. I recommend this book to any student or nurse who wants a precise picture of clinical ethical issues. My only complaint is I would have liked more detail in the discussion of each issue. Overall the book is very useful and relevant for healthcare workers. I am most satisfied with it.

3 out of 5 stars Buddhist theme presents ethical dilema for Judea-Christian Belief System.......2007-09-09

The kaleidoscope descipture for this text should include a content warning. The author is really highlighting her doctornal thesis on Buddhist influences on Aristoles work and Nursing. This is presented but not critiqued for it's place in the Judea-Christian Belief System prevalent in Western Civilizaton.

5 out of 5 stars Nursing Ethics - Good Book.......2005-08-25

After reading this book in my nursing practice issues class I learned a lot about ethics in nursing. Being a nursing student, I can use this valuable information in my clinicals and when I start working in the hospital. The ethical concerns are discussed comprehensively. Nurses need to read this book. Very good book, read it.

      Book Description

This long awaited revision has been designed for both undergraduate and graduate readers. This book's treatment of the full spectrum of curriculum design and practice has set the standard for completeness for nearly two decades. The latest issues are addressed, especially national testing, curriculum fragmentation, and the quest for "core" curriculum in a multicultural society. For masters or doctoral level readers.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars More readable than most textbooks.......2007-01-02

This book is excellent - complete, thorough, accurate and concise, and as a bonus it is pleasantly written for pleasant reading. Textbook reading is not often enjoyable, however interesting it might be. Tanner makes good progress toward enjoyable, while remaining serious, well researched, and well organized.
The only drawback is its age; much has happened in education in the intervening years between its publication and the present time. This doesn't change the accuracy and completness of Tanner's information about history, curriculum writing and curriculum implementation, but the section on the future of curriculum is rather dated. Nonetheless, Tanner anticipates much of the change that has occurred. I hope there is a 4th edition (with the last section updated) in the works.

With its focus on the application of theory to actual classroom practice, this book's treatment of the full spectrum of curriculum design and practice has set the standard for completeness for nearly two decades. Part I explores the historical roots of current curriculum issues and practices, emphasizing the assessment of leading efforts at reform. Part II offers a critique of changing concepts of curriculum, conflicting curriculum and educational rationales, and influences for and against change. In Part III, major crosscurrents in reform and reconstruction are discussed, including social crises, the “knowledge explosion”, curriculum articulation, and emerging designs. Part IV focuses on curriculum research and improvement, paying particular attention to the roles of teachers, supervisors, administrators, and curriculum specialists in the process.

        Book Description

This interesting, innovative guide's basic idea is that behavior management plans can be as effective in preventing problem behavior as they are in correcting it. The book offers easy-to-use, research-based plans for addressing problem behavior in two key areas: on-task time/assignment completion and disruption/rule violation. The author introduces a dozen behavior management plans in non-technical language that eliminates the need for extensive training in behavior therapy or learning theory. Even a novice can translate the book's concepts quickly, and effectively use the strategies in this helpful book. Topics covered in this helpful and highly original book are covered in an easy-to-read yet comprehensive manner. These topics include: introduction to classroom management, plans for keeping on task and completing assignments, and plans for reducing or eliminating disruptive and rule-violation behavior. The book doesn't leave the reader hanging; the step-by-step guidelines for effective classroom management really work. The techniques discussed include: the beeper system, break cards, response cards, beat-the-clock games, the good behavior game, behavioral contracting, the disruptive incident barometer, time-outs, and relaxation training. An exciting and appropriate resource for teachers in all situations; this book can also be useful for parents as a tool at home.

        Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars if teachers only knew.......2007-04-10

If every teacher kept this book in their room AND USED IT!, there would substantially less referrals for behavior support from outside sources. This book is easy to read and to the point. I've read numerous behavior management books and this has the least amount of unecessary jargon that I've come across. If the terms are too technical for someone perhaps they dont have the capacity to be in any kind of post-baccalaureate training.

5 out of 5 stars loaded with good ideas.......2005-02-11

I found this book to be very useful. It provided many ideas to assist in the management of classrooms and kids. I was able to use the forms and ideas to combine them into effective approaches that saved me time overall since I was spending time focused on things other than correcting behavior. If you are a classroom teacher you should get this book.

        2 out of 5 stars Not a practical book.......2004-07-05

I did not feel that this book was practical for a classroom teacher. The ideas given were too time consuming for me. After reading this book, I guessed that the author could not have been a classroom teacher, and I was right. He's a psychologist. He talks about "baseline data" and measuring progress of students' behavior using percentiles, etc. I do not have time for this! I don't have time to keep all of the records he suggests. The book was full of too many psychological terms and theories and not enough practical ideas for the classroom. I have read better classroom management books with strategies that take less time to employ in the classroom.

4 out of 5 stars A useful resource & creative approach to language teaching!.......2000-05-24

It is surprising how often newspapers are overlooked as a valuable teaching tool. For one, newspapers provide immediate relevancy so as to spark student interest in current events around them. Besides, as newspapers are often written in plain, simple English, students will find them less daunting to read. This book gives teachers of English practical and creative ways to teach the language through the use of newspapers. For instance, the activities are created out of different sections of the newspapers -- from cartoons to editorials -- so that they provide a collection of challenging yet engaging activities to cater to different learners. The sample materials, combined with clear procedures and guidelines, make it a handy tool for the teacher. Definitely recommended for those teachers keen to explore new ways to enhance language teaching and learning!

            Adopter's Comments

`I use this book as an essential course text for a module on curriculum theory. It is an excellent text for the whole course'

`Vic Kelly's writing is always concise and informative, but also at times challenging'

`A most comprehensive text that takes the reader beyond content/balance issues values, beliefs and assumptions on the curriculum'

This book has been regularly revised and updated since it was first published in the mid-1970s. A V Kelly's classic work on curriculum focuses on the philosophical and political dimensions of curriculum; and especially on the implications for schools and societies of various forms of curriculum.

The book outlines what form a curriculum should take if it is concerned to promote a genuine form of education for a genuinely democratic society. The author summarizes and explains the main aspects of curriculum theory, and shows how these can and should be translated into practice, in order to create an educational and democratic curriculum for all schools at all levels.

The book also seeks to show that the politicization of the school curriculum has led to the establishment of policies and practices which demonstrate a failure to understand these principles of curriculum theory and practice. As a result, policies and practices have been implemented which fall short of being adequate for education in a democratic society.

In view of the rapid pace of educational change imposed by various governments over the last 35 years, this is a book which is more relevant than ever.
