5 out of 5 stars E-Learning and the Science of Instruction.......2007-01-03

(My first language is Spanish, so excuse any misspells) I have been working on delivery management, and now development, of online courses ind Guatemala since 1999, for a private university, international training organizations and government. Among all my research to learn about the topic and improve my work, this piece of literature is among the very best. It bases its conclussions on research results, it places the human being (who is the target of e-learning programs) in the center of the process and, based on that, and other aspects, it provides valuable information on what works and what doesn't, concerning teaching methodologies for online teaching and/or training programs. Though, it does not concentrate or cover management systems for e-learning program delivery, another very important issue for successful distance programs. The book is great, simple and clear. Bright!!

5 out of 5 stars Valuable resource........2006-11-11

Ruth Colvin Clark continues to put out valuable resouces for those interested in multimedia education. This would be a valuable addition to any library.

5 out of 5 stars Great for eLearning Designers and Reviewers.......2006-08-01

With many years of experience in building eLearning and educational software I was looking for a reference to back up my "I know it when I see it" thoughts on good and bad courseware. This book met or exceeded my expectations. I like that the chapters are shorter and that the observations are backed up with study results. The References section is a valuable collection of eLearning studies in itself. There are also useful checklists included with the book.

There are some newer technologies such as Wikis and Blogs that are not covered in the book, but since the authors focus on proven techniques with studies to back them up it's unlikely such technologies would receive a lot of coverage at this point.

If you're responsible for designing or reviewing courseware this is a very good nuts-and-bolts reference.

5 out of 5 stars A book that every person in this field need to use.......2005-06-04

e-Learning and the Science of Instruction is a must have for anybody that is already a pro, or just starting out at designing web-based instruction. The authors give outstanding guidance for every step of the way, from explaining theories to the best way to set up your web site. It shows excellent illustrations of what to do, as well as what NOT to do. This book is a tool that every one in the business shouldn't be without.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent practical book for practitioners.......2005-05-16

I have been designing and developing e-Learning for 6 years and this book has been wonderful to help remind me of some basics, teach me a few things, and give excellent practical advice as I continue developing. I am not one to read textbooks or non-fiction but I find this writing style very easy to read and I am able to easily apply the concepts. If you have never developed e-Learning but are studying the topic in school, this book may come across as dry and hard to read. Hold on to it and pick it up after you've been developing for a year or so and I'm sure you'll find it as useful as I have.

5 out of 5 stars If you have only one training book to keep...........2003-05-28

I found Eitington's The Winning Trainer the best of the category. If you were to have only one training book for limited space available for your suitcase, I recommend this. Actually, when I leave my office for an overseas assignment, The Winning Trainer is always my companion. It is comprehensive and practical. Yes, it is the reference for active trainers.

5 out of 5 stars A Trainer's Bible.......2001-08-16

No one in the training field or doing anything even close (teachers take note!) should be without this book. I started workshops for high school students and have done exhaustive research, and spent a great deal of money. This book is by far one of the most outstanding resources anyone could have. I have covered mine to keep it from tattering, since I use it constantly in planning. It is so comprehensive...you can start with just a subject/topic...and find dozens of ways to present it. You can be a novice, or an experienced professional and benefit from this book. I simply don't have the words to express how valuable it has been to me. It is a gold mine of information about the teaching and learning processes.

5 out of 5 stars The best overall resource for the training professional........1999-05-10

This is an encyclopedia in one volume for the training professional -- one you can't do without. In clear, concise language the Eitington provides the concepts and ideas to prepare the learning environment, involve the participants, deliver content, and evaluate the learning experience. You won't find another book like it anywhere!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent design resource!!.......1998-12-21

This is an excellent resource for new and experienced designers and trainers. The book contains HUNDREDS of ideas for active, interesting, meaningful learning. EVERYONE in the learning field should own this book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent! The Bible of Training - Old and New Testament!.......1998-09-22

For a new trainer, this tome has proven to be an invaluable source of ideas, inspiration, examples, watch-outs, suggestions, and additional resources. Without this book, my first training sessions would have been lackluster meanderings into unfamiliar (and dangerous) territory. Mr Eitington's suggestions, guidelines and examples served to help me structure and flesh-out my seminar to be a strong success. The book is clearly organized with both a Table of Contents and an Index, and every chapter is broken down into relevant, digestible chunks. This guide focuses only a little on actually setting up and starting a training, in favor of creating a great deal of detail on training techniques, scenarios, and tools. The copiable sheets (for everything from pre-work to team games to feedback) 1included at the end of the book also provide much creative fodder, as well as saving a great deal of time. Of the five training guides I have, this is the one I use more than 80% of the time.

4 out of 5 stars Great resource for Instructional designers.......2007-08-23

An an instructional designer, I know how difficult it can be to find good written resources on the subject, and it is next to impossible to find resources that don't waste too much time on ID history and theory.

I wanted a practical resource, and that is exactly what this book is. It explains ID procedure in great detail and stays away from uneccessary theoretical mumbo jumbo. My only criticism is that it can get wordy and repetitive at times.
This is not a book for ID students, it's a book for actual instructional designers. I learned more from this book than any other book on ID.

4 out of 5 stars Very down to earth..........2007-07-06

I bough this text for a graduate course that I am taking. I really like how the author is down to earth and speaks on an understandable level. He also explains items very clearly.

5 out of 5 stars Everything you need to develop instructional material.......2007-03-16

This book has more than some instructors will need, but I think all of it has potential for being very useful. For example, I am using part of it to help me improve the layout of a book, another part to help me teach trainers how to write better instructional objectives, and the rest to refresh my learning in every area.

There is still the matter of teaching in an effective way, and this book was not developed for that purpose. But having a well organized block of instruction in which each part has a purpose, and having good printed material and plenty of participant interaction, will make teaching easier. This book provides all of that in abundance. I believe it should be a standard reference for committed trainers.

3 out of 5 stars Don't do it like this.......2005-10-08

For an instructional designer the author spent a lot of time going over what not to do versus what to do. I found his condescending attitude put me off. The info however is helpful, but I'm sure there is another book that can more effectively convey the information.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and applicable.......2005-09-30

This book has been a wonderful addition to my library. I am using it to train a couple of non-instructional designers on how to design and develop quality training. It has provided an easy to read comprehensive guide. The icons throughout the book guide those that are infrequent designers in the most applicable sections of the book vs. those that a professional ID person would need to know. I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Ideal student text for professional continuing education.......2000-09-10

I have adoped the field book for use in the Corporate Trainer Certification program being offered here at San Antonio College Continuing Education. The text is up to date. It combines a very well written text with review exercises, case studies, and personal actions through out. The students love it! But, what I like best about the book is my instructors' USE IT! They use the music CD as well. Their coments to me are that "it's user friendly." Thank you very much for this great teaching tool.

5 out of 5 stars Crtical Chain/Theory of Constraints Learning Facilitator.......2000-02-05

Outstanding presentation on the theory and practical tools to enahnce any learning experience. I found that the book answered many questions I had, and solved many dilemmas I face facilitating behvior change in organizaitons. Lour orgainied the material very well, and ends each chapter with a personal plan place. Her work exemplifies the methods she illuminates.

5 out of 5 stars Fast Fun and Flexible ways to learn and teach.......2000-01-12

This is the most useful training book I have ever read. The format is easy to read and it is easy to learn the concepts. I have been doing training and psychotherapy for twenty-two years and I am an NLP practitioner. I learned many valuable new things. Especially the importance of teaching all the types of intelligence's. I now realize that when I get all excellent evaluations except for one or two I may not be hitting that persons intelligence. The marketing ideas are a very welcomed addition. This book has helped my training and business immensely.

5 out of 5 stars Everything you wanted to know about training..........1999-12-18

and didn't know who to ask!

As a seasoned practitioner of brain-based learning techniques, NLP, and accelerated learning, I was intrigued by this book - it was the book I always thought I'd write!

I'd recommend it to my friends who've decided they want a cool job like mine.

It covers the A-to-Z of learning - business reasons, contract for learning, learning styles, memory, you as trainer, environment, music, development of learning events and marketing. It even provides usable examples and activities.

The best thing - Lou models what she's writing with the use of illustrations, tables, etc. If you want to be a trainer who does more than lecture, this book is a must for your briefcase...it may never make its way to your bookshelf!

      Book Description

Work and Integrity is a timely resource that examines the crisis as well as the promise of professionalism in contemporary society. This vital book argues for the importance of a new civic professionalism that reflects the ideals of democracy and public service in our ever more complex economic environment. A publication of The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, Work and Integrity explores the most current thinking on the various (and often conflicting) ways in which the concept of professional work is understood. Using examples from the United States and Europe, the author describes how the professions evolved from a limited kind of genteel occupation into one of the most widely emulated and sought-after models of work. The book also explores the rise of complex institutions of industrial and postindustrial society, especially the university and the bureaucratic structures of business, government, health care, and education.

      Book Description

Simulations and the Future of Learning offers trainers and educators the information and perspective they need to understand, design, build, and deploy computer simulations for this generation. Looking back on his recent first-hand experience as lead designer for an advanced leadership development simulation, author Clark Aldrich has created a detailed case study of the creation and deployment of an e-learning simulation that had the development cycle of a modern computer game. With this book Aldrich, a leader in the e-learning field, has created an intriguing roadmap for the future of learning while taking us along on an entertaining rollercoaster ride of trial and error, success and failure. Simulations and the Future of Learning outlines the design principles and critical decisions around any simulation's components— the interface, the physics and animation systems, the artificial intelligence, and sets and figures. Using this accessible resource, readers will learn how to create and evaluate successful simulations that have the following characteristics: authentic and relevant scenarios; applied pressure situations that tap user's emotion and force them to act; a sense of unrestricted options; and replayability.

      Customer Reviews:

Aldrich knows what he is talking about and it reads like a novel. Before you know it you have read most of it and you can reproduce it because of the catchy examples and arguments.

4 out of 5 stars what it takes.......2005-08-03

This book is really a case study of creating developing and working through the giant project of making a true simulation game where the gamer can be in control of who things go. In the business leadership scenarios mentioned one can learn a great deal

3 out of 5 stars Infotainment and Evangelism.......2004-10-26

High profile e-learning industry analyst Clark Aldrich became disenchanted with the yawning gap between the promise of e-learning and the reality. Attracted by the potential application of computer gaming techniques for training simulation purposes, he quit his job with the Gartner Group and joined a project team attempting to design a computer-based leadership development simulation. The result was Simulearn's Virtual Leader. Aldrich's book recounts the experience in this book.

Despite the promise of the title, the book is a curious mix of speculation, case study, and product promotion. Aldrich provides accessible frameworks for thinking about the underlying design considerations for the development of simulations, and some useful insights into the analysis of content and development of simulation architecture. Yet the book is not a tool kit or primer for would-be designers - the advice is rarely actionable - nor is it a deep study of the concepts and application of simulation models. As such its greatest value is as an introductory case study into aspects of simulation design. The case in question is the development of Simulearn's Virtual Leader product, and the book gives little insight into other forms of electronic or other simulations. The author is a Vice President of Simulearn, so his views are not impartial.

Aldrich makes some refreshingly provocative assertions: e-learning has failed to deliver because it's not sufficiently user-focused - it has been sold to senior managers as means of lowering the cost of training, rather than enriching the value of learning. Aldrich believes that education and vocational training are too "linear", emphasizing the acquisition of facts in a sequential, guided way rather than "open-ended", allowing the development of decision-making, interpersonal communication and creative capabilities required for success in work. In contrast, simulations offer rich combinations of linear, cyclical and open-ended learning, with the freedom to make mistakes, try new approaches and hone skills in a secure environment.

The book is often entertaining. Aldrich's account of the analysis of the leadership content in order to arrive at an underlying simulation model and architecture is amusing - framed as a quest to find the meaning of leadership and render it into electronic simulation, with himself as hero. It is slightly clouded by digressions on the nature of leadership - Aldrich seems to approach the subject with little background, and is suprised to find that (to paraphrase Warren Bennis) so much been written by so many to so little effect.

A number of glaring issues go unexamined: the leadership model and the simulation design of Virtual Leader require a standard of behaviour and ethics that are possibly more ideology than reality. Success in Virual Leader requires a degree of conventional virtue that most organizations espouse but is not always practiced by those in power. A fundamentally Machiavellian approach apparently won't work in Virtual Leader, but it is arguably an effective means of gaining and retaining power in most organisations. The player's experience of Virtual Leader is not evident from the descriptions -despite extensive descriptions of the design process and interface, the book gives little insight into how the player interacts with the game.

Aldrich is evangelical, which gives his writing energy and persuasive power, but like many evangelists, he is strong on belief and short on evidence for his views. While he is right to question the validity of conventional models of education and learning, his opinions are largely speculation, or based on the anecdotal evidence of others or his own experience.

And despite the evangelism, if Aldrich's predictions hold true, most organisations will never design a simulation using his approach. They are prohibitively expensive, costing many millions of dollars. At best, they may purchase an off-the-shelf simulation, and customise it to some extent, which is possibly one of the promotional intentions of the book.

5 out of 5 stars An easy read that will have you thinking for a long time........2004-09-20

This book has a great casual style that makes it accessible to anyone, yet the ideas are significant.
It's pretty cool - he describes the process he went through to create a game to help people learn leadership skills. What I found interesting is how he came to define leadership, since he had to do it in a way that would permit 'quantization' and definition as a simulation. He admits that the ideas are not new, but I think his perspective is a fresh one. The way he has put them together is definitely new. The result is a visualization of leadership that plays on in your mind - great stuff.
It is also an interesting account of the process he went through when designing his simulation/game. When organized and well written, accounts of groups solving complex problems can be very illuminating, and this one certainly succeeds there too.
I'd recommend this book to anyone interested in leadership; e-Learning; and problem-solving.

5 out of 5 stars Timely, Needed, and Important.......2004-07-12

Every person who has played a modern-day simulation game has had to wonder how that level of interaction can be used to teach and train. Simulation and the Future of Learning doesn't just explain that it's possible, it proves it.

Aldrich's extensive background in e-learning products gives him a very qualified view of what needs to improve in the future of learning. The answer is simulations. Real-time, engaging and realistic simulations. He explains in detail the hurdles, headaches, and horrors of developing what has become one of the best leadership training tools on the market--Virtual Leader.

While there is little explanation of instructional theory and methods, this book is HIGHLY recommended to any organization looking to get into the educational simulation business. It provides a realistic picture of the decisions designers will face when building the next generation of learning products.

      Book Description

What if you weren't planning to become a trainer . . . but now you have to train someone? Or what if you are planning to become a trainer . . . but you have no idea where to start? How can you effectively communicate your expertise to your audience? This book has the answers.

A training workshop can be frightening for both neophytes and old pros. You know you have the knowledge. But just having knowledge is not enough. You need to match your training to your audience. You need to establish the learning objectives of your audience. You need to explain yourself clearly, to ask and answer the right questions, to relate to your audience. You need to determine how you will evaluate the effectiveness of your training. Basically, you need a plan, and you want it fast.

"This book is designed to answer the questions that I have been asked over and over again by students. Each key concept is linked to one of Aesop's Fables to make it easy to remember. The writing is deliberately simple and practical. I'm convinced that if you apply the concepts, you'll do a good job."
      --Eileen K. Van Kavelaar, Author

You have the road map in your hands: follow this book. Fill in the worksheets as you progress. And when you are finished, you will have prepared a flawless program. Van Kavelaar takes what can be an overwhelming event--a training workshop--and divides it, chapter by chapter, into simple components. Breeze through these easy steps and you will find that your enormous event, your training workshop, is perfectly planned.

Each chapter begins with a fable. Each fable becomes an illustration of a key component of training workshop success. Van Kavelaar's engaging style moves you quickly through the essentials of workshop design, enabling you effortlessly to assemble a precise, effective plan. This book is excellent for accidental trainers, individuals who never identified themselves as trainers but find that they must share their know-how with others. And even experienced trainers will benefit from Van Kavelaar's back-to-basics approach to workshop planning.

Maybe you have never trained before. Maybe you have trained many times before. Maybe you are a manager who must give the subject-matter experts the tools they need to present their knowledge to their coworkers. Anywhere you need a training workshop . . . you need Conducting Training Workshops.

Before this book, I was at a loss as to how to effectively present training sessions on technical information. This excellent guide takes novice trainers step-by-step through the process. Handy fill-in worksheets at the end of each chapter provide a journal to use later. Each chapter begins with a guiding principle from one of Aesop's Fables that make the concepts easy to apply. I wish I had had this book years ago!

5 out of 5 stars Valuable Resource for Employers.......2003-03-09

Employers in all fields are challenged to find, develop, and retain top talent. Their people are their most valuable strategic resource, though many executives don't realize the importance of having highly competent people on their team. Too often employers allow themselves to be satisfied with less that adequate capacity.

As we have warned in our book, "Impending Crisis: Too Many Jobs, Too Few People," this decade will see the most severe shortage of skilled workers in history. A major strategic advantage in this highly competitive environment will be the opportunity for training and education. Workers, dedicated to managing their own careers, will be increasingly hungry for training to build their skills so they can stay marketable. Sharp employers will invest huge amounts of resources to enhance the capacity of current employees to avoid the need to spend heavily to recruit qualified people from the outside.

No longer can employers just throw training at employees, like spaghetti, watching to see how much sticks. Now the focus must be on understanding exactly what is needed-to meet the needs of the individual employees as well as the current and future needs of the employer. This book is filled with powerful information that will enable wise employers to accurately assess training needs to those needs can be met in whatever ways are appropriate.

Note: this book is very focused. Do not expect to wander into topics like how to convince the boss to pay for more training or how to use computer-based training to teach skills. The power of this book is the tight focus on assessing training needs and your organization's effectiveness in meeting those needs. Using the methodologies presented in easy-to-understand practical fashion, the reader will be able to avoid the course-of-the-week training mentality. No more stress training just because it's Tuesday. No more customer service training because it's a nice thing to do. Focus now on true needs that, once met well, will influence the organization's bottom line.

Using this book will enable you to evaluate the effectiveness of your training function, assess various tools to determine the prioritized needs of your constituencies, and how to apply the information gathered to design a training program that will make a real difference for the organization. Resources are tight, so the better you are able to assess before you act, the more efficient you will be.

The text is supported by graphics showing forms to use, checklists to follow, and a book design that makes even this thick a book comfortable to use. The book is accompanied by a CD-ROM with the forms and a step-by-step approach to this vital information gathering and assessment-before-implementation process.

While this book will be most useful for corporate training and human resource professionals, it will also be helpful for senior executives striving to understand the power of effective training. Owners of mid-sized and many smaller companies that don't have training directors will find this book to be a tool they can use to build and maintain a strong work team. Work methodically with this tool; take your time in reading and application. There's a lot here.

4 out of 5 stars Good Book On The Subject.......2003-02-27

For many trainers or HR professionals out there, it can be difficult to discover what the organization's true training needs are. This book is designed to tell you exactly how to get the information you need to make the best decisions when determining what coursework to offer your employees. The book lays out, systematically, how determine how well your training department is meeting the needs of the organization and how to improve that.

My only complaints are that he gives you a copy of all the forms he shows in the book, but they are all mashed together in one long pdf format, which makes it harder to work with individual documents. In addition, the writing style can be slightly dry and confusing from time to time.

That said, I would still recommend the book for all training professionals looking to do need analysis.

5 out of 5 stars Old, but GOOD.......2005-03-16

This is a great resource for anyone who conducts training sessions, seminars, conferences, or informal meetings of any sort. No frills, just lots and lots of ideas...some to use as is, some you will want to adapt. I've used dozens of these games and every one made the point I wanted to teach. A true classic.

      4 out of 5 stars Good Resource.......2003-01-28

This really is an excellent book for finding activities to add to your training sessions. There are a lot of great games in this resource. The games are listed by subject matter to make it easy to get right to where you want to go and the games are just as relevant as they ever were.

The only reason that I didn't give it a five is that I don't care for the typeset and overall presentation of the book, but these things are easily overlooked when you find a great new activity.

      5 out of 5 stars STILL A GREAT CHOICE.......2000-06-24

Don't be put off by this book's 1983 publication date. It is still one of the best sources of icebreakers and other training exercises. It's value?--the book's not just for professional trainers. It can be used by just about anyone who needs some ideas about what to do when you get up in front of a group--any group. It's not cluttered by lectures or lengthy explanations. You just jump right in and flip through the samples. It's even fun just to browse. This is the second in a series of training game books by Scannell and Newstrom. Look at one and you'll probably want all three!
