Helpful resource.......2007-10-10

I'm using the book in my class on Working with English Language Learners. It is an informative book for someone who has not experienced that in their classroom. I will say though that the author makes her opinions well known on the US government policies around immigration and it is not a conservative opinion. Her call to teachers for activism is a bit much for my taste.

The book is an excellent source to study for the CTEL exam in California. It includes examples which are required items on the test. The chapters are vert organized.

Pleasurable Read...........2007-06-29

Lynne T. Diaz-Rico keeps readers turning pages with her well-written prose and plentiful point-of-interest boxes. In every chapter, there are tidbits to share and discuss with other teachers. My husband (who is not a teacher) and I have also shared some lively conversations based on the information in this book.

This book has been like a bible for my role as an English Language Literacy Coach in the professional development of teachers. The concepts presented are all research based and up to date and the authors give very specific examples of strategies that can be implemented in classrooms right away. We did a chapter study (Chapter Four on Oral Language Development) as a grade level team, right after receiving the book. We were very impressed with the activities that were suggested and the connections we made with things we were already doing. We also loved the companion website that goes with this book that gives resources and activities relating to each chapter. This book is highly recommended for K-12 teachers who have English Language Learners in their classrooms.

I use this as the text for a university level ESL Methods course. I've especially liked the authors use of specific classroom examples, as well as suggestions for learning activities that students can utilize. It is also full of suggestions for effective teaching strategies to use with ELLs.

As more and more English language learners (ELLs) are included in mainstream classrooms, what can we do to ensure that they understand academic content and develop their English language skills? To answer this question, authors Jane Hill and Kathleen Flynn have examined decades of research, interviewed mainstream teachers with ELLs in their classrooms, and reviewed the classroom recommendations from Marzano, Pickering, and Pollock's seminal Classroom Instruction That Works (2001) through an ELL lens. The result is Classroom Instruction That Works with English Language Learners—a comprehensive guide to helping elementary school students at all levels of English language acquisition succeed.

The strategies discussed in the book include homework and practice, summarization and note taking, and use of nonlinguistic representations, among many others. For each strategy, the authors provide a summary of the research, detailed examples of how to modify the strategy for use with ELLs in mainstream classrooms, and teacher accounts of implementation. Because ELLs face cultural hurdles as well as linguistic ones, this book also shows teachers how to glean insight into students' backgrounds and address the cultural biases inherent in many classroom practices.

Accommodating English language learners is one of the greatest challenges educators face today. Just as different levels of fluency require different approaches, so too do different backgrounds and languages. This practical, research-based book gives elementary school teachers the guidance they need to help ELLs of all nationalities thrive alongside their English-dominant peers.

I thought this book was very good for classroom teachers who want clear information on how to include English Language Learners in their classrooms. It is very difficult to explain to classroom teachers how to include students who are learning English in short sound bites. This book helps clarify information and teachers can read it at their leisure.
I personally don't like the term English Language Learners because it denies the fact that the students have their own languages and those languages shouldn't be ignored. In fact, using the student's native language helps students learn English.

this was a required book for my master's program and let me say this is a HARD book to read. The language is difficult to understand and it is just plain drab to read. It lacks creative examples and activites. The information is good, just not presented in an interesting manner.

This book is required reading in a graduate class I am taking and is an excellent resource. It gives a comprehensive look at Bilingual Education. It begins with an overview of bilingual education, then moves into specific programs and policies which include important court cases that shaped the face of education today. The historical view was particularly interesting! After chapters on language and culture, Ovando does a great job of explaining how to teach in different content areas. Anyone in the field of education will benefit from reading this book. It is well researched and written by someone with a deep understanding of bilingual education.

This book is not amazing or spectaculat but it's a must have. It has lots of essential information for school psychologists. My one complaint is that it focuses on language, especially Spanish. It does not focus on other cultures, just other languages.

I Highly Recommend This Book.......2006-03-19

I attended a conference in Corpus Christi, Texas and had the pleasure of hearing Dr. Samuel Ortiz, and Dr. Hector Ochoa present on culturally and linguistically diverse students. I purchased the book when I returned home. It is an excellent resource that is clearly written, and has several tables and charts that can be adapted for use with school psychologists. I am coordinator of psychological services with a school district and this is a resource I rely on frequently. I highly recommend the text.

CLAD Text.......2003-12-31

A well written text essential for acquiring CLAD credentialing. Myths are perpetuated which greatly reduces the credibility - there is only one "race", humans or Homo sapiens. Very few of us were born or came from the Caucasus Mountains of eastern Europe, yet 17th century artificial constructs of "race" and "Caucasian" are used. There is no discussion of how skin pigmentation is an ecotype adaptation, not a "race." Science, Scientific American, Discovery and other peer-reviewed journals have corrected "race" misconceptions repeatedly - yet the authors, with education backgrounds, appear to have not completed a review of current literature.

There is no discussion of critical thinking (www.criticalthinking.org). Children of "color" are discussed, but there is no discussion of children of "pallor". The 3rd edition can be greatly improved by being current, i.e., people of pallor (so-called "white") are now the "minority" in many communities; a CD-ROM or DVD and online video streaming resources; correct use of the term "race."

Inquiry is discussed under Science, but only the Natl Science Education Standards are acknowleged - TIMSS, Geography, Project 2061 (AAAS), GLOBE (www.globe.gov) 15,000+ schools in 100 countries on 7 continents and multiple other standards are ignored.

The authors get it wrong regarding the language of Science, many students with nonEnglish backgrounds have an advantage over English speakers because of the Latin and Greek roots. Effective teaching uses "hands-on, minds-on" not "familiarize, memorize, regurgitate and forget." Effective K-12 and university instructors minimize lecturing and maximize opportunities to internalize knowledge across curricula.

A wealth of current critical thinking, classroom management and teaching techniques will go a long way toward helping make this a credible, rather than a required text.

Golden resource.......2002-08-06

I almost felt like I was cheating on the CLAD test. This handbook was a wonderful resource and the only one I used to pass the test .... the FIRST time!!

Chapters 1 & 2 seemed very dry but I'm not big on theory. The remaining chapters were much more interesting. I highly recommend reading it before taking the CLAD test.
