Book Description

Some children learn easily, while others struggle. How can teachers make sure that every child has opportunities to develop his or her talents? The answer is differentiation: changing the pace, level, or kind of instruction in response to learners' needs, styles, and/or interests. In this timely, practical guide, Diane Heacox presents a menu of strategies for any teacher faced with a spectrum of student needs and styles. Some are quick and easy-differentiating discussions, creating tiered assignments. Others are more comprehensive-matrix plans for designing curriculum units, "one-sentence lesson plans" that encompass content, process skills, and evidence of learning. Individual chapters focus on evaluation in a differentiated classroom and how to manage both behavior and work tasks. Diane describes ways to get to know your students and recognize that all have strengths and limitations. Not every gifted student is always ready for higher-level thinking; not every child with learning differences is always incapable of succeeding in a "higher group." Any curriculum can be differentiated-even a standard or mandated curriculum. Drawing on Bloom's Taxonomy, Gardner's Multiple Intelligences, other experts in the field, and her own experience in the classroom, Diane explains how to differentiate instruction in a wide variety of scenarios to provide variety and challenge in how teachers teach and in how students learn. Templates and forms simplify planning; examples illustrate differentiation in many content areas. Recommended for all teachers committed to reaching and teaching all learners. Includes reproducibles.

4 out of 5 stars Great for teachers "new" to differentiation.......2007-07-27

Yes, differentiation is the latest and greatest buzzword. But do people really know how to differentiate and why?

I have found this book to be helpful. I am a new teacher and found myself immersed in a classroom my first year with an inner city mixed age-group class (4th and 5th graders). I had children in my room performing as low as 2nd grade and as high as 7th grade. All in one room. This isn't uncommon nowadays and Diane Heacox's book has shown me how to set up for a successful differentiated classroom environment from the beginning of the year. Yes, almost all teachers differentiate -- but having true and useful strategies to implement from the start makes it easier to accomplish.

Heacox advises, several times, to start slowly and only do what works at first. She also says it may be necessary to differentiate only one subject this year and do another next year and so on to keep yourself from getting overwhelmed. I thought the pace was good and her examples really helped a visual person like myself to see the "big picture". I am excited to use the Learning Styles and Multiple Intelligences information she includes in the book with my next class. Best of all, she provides examples of how to explain differentiation to parents and administrators.

5 out of 5 stars New to differentiation?.......2007-06-27

I found this book to be terrific! It answered all of my questions. I used the student survey with my 9th grade students and they loved it! I even use the matrix plans for every unit I teach. This book covers it all - placing students in groups (how to place students in groups using differentiation), tiering assignments, grading (is differentiation fair), classroom management (how do I manage 30 students doing 30 different activities), and special populations (exceptional, gifted, and regular education). I have read other books on differentiation put out by ASCD, but this one you can really apply to your classoom!

5 out of 5 stars Necessity for Differentiation.......2007-06-05

I attended a workshop by Ms. Heacox. Since I can't have her come help me in my classroom, I got this book instead. It's excellent for all grade levels. A great resource for the basics of how to differentiate and why.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Place to Start.......2006-12-01

Differentiation is one of the current buzzwords, and lots of people talk about it...in theory. It's really difficult to find ANYONE who talks about it in PRACTICE. Heacox, while still heavy in theory, goes farther than any other authors I've read so far on the subject in actually giving teachers usuable tools for curriculum writing and developing. Could there be more immediately applicable things? Of course. Still, it's come the closest to giving teachers some tangible strategies and activities that I've found.

4 out of 5 stars Great Resources!.......2006-09-23

This is a great resource for planning and coming up with projects for a wide range of students. Every time I refer to it, it opens my eyes to something more.

4 out of 5 stars Great Book and Easy to Follow.......2007-10-23

I really enjoyed reading this book. I even brought it to the beach with me. I found it helpful and easy to read. It gave me ideas and tips for starting the year right. I found myself able to integrate what I learned from this book with other courses I've taken. I read it and felt invigorated and excited about beginning the year. I look forward to applying more of what I've learned as the year continues. I definitely recommend this book!

4 out of 5 stars a wonderful book.......2006-09-02

If you are interested in differentiation, and meeting the needs of individual students, then this book is for you. It focuses more than the other differentiation books by Carol on the affective component of the classroom. How do we meet students where they are and understand where they are coming from?
This book emphasizes both teaching students and especially learning from them.
Whether this matches your philosophy or challenges your ideas, you will find this book helps you in your teaching career. Carol is my adviser, and if you get the chance to see her speak, definitely do it. You should read The Differentiated Classroom for more about academic curriculum.

5 out of 5 stars A Firm Foundation.......2005-05-11

This book provides a comprehensive view into the workings of the differentiated classroom. Dr. Tomlinson presents the vital theoretical underpinnings of differentiation, but pairs them with real world vignettes and strategies. This combination helps the reader understand the importance of tailoring instruction to meet students' needs, but also empowers the reader with a sense of "being equipped" with real-school-world tools to help them begin the reconstruction process.

5 out of 5 stars Nice book. A little pricey........2007-09-30

I needed this book for a master's class I am taking. It came and was everything I expected. It came quickly and in good condition. I was a little perterbed by the cost of this book in relation to it's size. A little book at a big price.

3 out of 5 stars Repeated Information.......2006-01-29

this book had a lot of information, but nothing that required an entire book to cover. there were a lot of "methods" and ideas to incorporate in the classroom, but the organization of the book made it cumbersome to follow the examples. If you are the type of learner who appreciates a ton of examples this would be a great reference.

Book Description

In this 2nd edition of a book that has provided inspiration to countless teachers, Carol Ann Tomlinson offers three new chapters, extended examples and information in every chapter, and field-tested strategies that teachers can use in today's increasingly diverse classrooms. Tomlinson shows how to use students' readiness levels, interests, and learning profiles to address student diversity.

In addition, the author shows teachers how to differentiate, or structure, lessons at every grade level and content area to provide "scaffolds"--as well as high-speed elevators--for

$ The content of lessons, $ The processes used in learning, and $ The products of learning.

Teachers can draw on the book's practical examples as they begin to differentiate instruction in their own classrooms. Strategies include curriculum compacting, "sidebar" investigations, entry points, graphic organizers, contracts, and portfolios. As Tomlinson says, "Differentiation challenges us to draw on our best knowledge of teaching and learning. It suggests that there is room for both equity and excellence in our classrooms.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource and easy to read and apply..........2007-08-13

Tomlinson presents the material in an easy to read and use format. The book is easy for the teacher to use immediately, either read one chapter at a time or all the way through. A great resource. Now if we could just get the regular education teachers to give it a try!!

5 out of 5 stars Pedagogy Made Plain.......2007-08-11

Carol Tomlinson is a master at making sense out of pedagogy, making what is complex, clear, and making the principles inspirational. She is excellent at weaving together all the best practices in education to give 21st century teachers what we've been dying to hear -- that all approaches we've been taught have some merit, somewhere, for some child. The art is in the weaving it all together, which is what differentiated instruction is all about. This book is essential. Read also Understanding By Design Expanded 2nd Edition and then search for any book that differentiates specifically for your content area. Amy Benjamin is wonderful at not only English instruction and Social Studies but sampling other subjects (see Differentiated Instruction: A Guide for Middle and High School Teachersand then there's Tomlinson's and Strickland's Differentiation in Practice: A Resource Guide for Differentiating Curriculum, Grades 9-12. If you have these on your shelf, you have great foundational principles plus great specific models to work from. NCTE has also just released the first book of differentiated lessons that I've found on Shakespeare, Teaching Romeo and Juliet: A Differentiated Approach. We've still got a long way to go as a profession to providing ready-made models that teachers don't have to invent on their own, but we're getting there. If you're in English, Benjamin and the NCTE book should get you started.

5 out of 5 stars a perfect match with constructivist theory!.......2007-01-18

How to differentiate instruction in mixed-ability classrooms is essentially a very watered down version of constructivism. This is not a bad thing, in fact constructivist theorists knew others would catch on as the accountability movement grew. The book talks specifically about student centered learning and authentic assessment as well as disposes myths about what differentiated learning is and is not.

As the accountability movement matures, I believe we will see that Tomlinson and others who discuss differentiation are really part of the larger strain of constructivist theorists who are rooted in the idea of making learning meaningful through authentic class explorations of knowledge as well as authentic assessment.

5 out of 5 stars A Good Place to Start for DI.......2006-12-16

Meeting all students' needs is more than a conversation and Carol Tomlinson shows the way with this book. As a staff developer for the largest county in Michigan, I use many books and resources that I keep listed on storywind. This book is great for those new to Differentiated Instruction (DI) and are seeking both a basic understanding, what DI looks like, and strategies to begin.

I must include that if you want a deeper understanding of how DI fits into curriculum, pedagogy, what DI looks like for students and teachers, and strategies with examples--get the book, Fulfilling the Promise of Differentiation. I sue it when facilitating staff in professional learning groups. It's good for doing independent research for a department, grade level team, and school implementation.

How to Differentiate Instruction in Mixed-Ability Classrooms is a quick read that you'll want to reread with a highlighter and pen. Carol Tomlinson is a great communicator and teacher. She provides in this book a beginning understanding of how DI is good for students, and varied ways that teachers can implement into curriculum. I especially recommend chapter two which makes the case of DI for struggling and advanced learners, and address the areas teachers teach: content, process, and product, and how students respond for successor failure: readiness, interest, and learning profile. The appendices contain strategies described in a page for each.

This book should be in every school's professional library. Its information is essential for getting a basic understanding of Differentiated Instruction and examples. Also consider Fulfilling the Promise of Differentiated Instruction.

5 out of 5 stars A must for every good teacher.......2006-11-05

I first was shown this book in a graduate class on Effective Teaching and used it for an assignment. I couldn't get over how many useful strategies were laid out in front of me to apply in my classroom. The strategies offered are realistic and useful in any subject - I teach high school French and apply many. The tools offered are applicable to all and any student in your class.
This book should be part of every good teacher's professional toolbox; it is highly recommended.

If this is how you feel about differentiated instruction (DI), you are not alone. Although research shows that DI maximizes learning and neural development, teachers still struggle with its challenges, especially in the high school classroom. Applying her unique expertise as a researcher, teacher, trainer, and parent, Kathie F. Nunley provides practical and supportive solutions to the real obstacles teachers face in mixed ability high school classrooms.

Each chapter lists an obstacle-"I have too much content to cover," or "I can’t grade all those different assignments," or "I thought I was differentiating"-and then provides:

Written with common sense, wisdom, and humor, this easy-to-navigate guide is a must-have resource for all high school teachers and instructional leaders committed to the benefits of differentiated instruction for high school learners.

    Book Description

It's an age-old challenge: How can teachers divide their time, resources, and efforts to effectively instruct students of diverse backgrounds and interests, as well as skill and readiness levels? The Differentiated Classroom: Responding to the Needs of All Learners offers a powerful, practical solution.

Drawing on nearly three decades of experience, author Carol Ann Tomlinson describes a way of thinking about teaching and learning that will change all aspects of how you approach students and your classroom. She looks to the latest research on learning, education, and change for the theoretical basis of differentiated instruction and why it's so important to today's children. Yet she offers much more than theory, filling the pages with real-life examples of teachers and students using-and benefitting from-differentiated instruction.

At the core of the book, three chapters describe actual lessons, units, and classrooms with differentiated instruction in action. Tomlinson looks at elementary and secondary classrooms in nearly all subject areas to show how real teachers turn the challenge of differentiation into a reality. Her insightful analysis of how, what, and why teachers differentiate lays the groundwork for you to bring differentiation to your own classroom.

Tomlinson's commonsense, classroom-tested advice speaks to experienced and novice teachers as well as educational leaders who want to foster differentiation in their schools. Using a "think versus sink approach," Tomlinson guides all readers through small changes, then even larger ones, until differentiation becomes a way of life that enriches both teachers and students.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Resource!.......2007-07-30

I read this book through as soon as I received it. Tomlinson is well-respected in her field. Most everything I have read concerns gifted students. This is an excellent resource for ALL students. Differentiation is absolutely necessary in today's classrooms. If all students are to reach their full potential, we must meet them where they are -- and they are all over the place! With so many learners requiring different strategies, finding a way to reach every child is a daunting task. This book gives you the strategies in clear, concise language. The information can be adapted to any subject area or age group. I wish every teacher in my school would read this book!

5 out of 5 stars The Differentiated Classroom: Responding to the Needs of All Learners.......2007-07-29

This book is excellent for anyone who wants to know the basics of Differentiation. I would recommend it to any teacher who is interested in individualized instruction for students. Also, this book gives some very important insights on curriculum objectives.

5 out of 5 stars Should be part of every teacher's library..........2006-10-22

Carol Ann Tomlinson's book shows teachers how to meet the needs of the wide range of abilities found in most classrooms through effective instructional grouping strategies. Differentiating curriculum is one of the most, if not the most, important skills for teachers to master in order to help all kids reach their full potential. Ms. Tomilson's techniques show teachers how to reach all levels of students - from those needing remediation - to the more advanced learner who needs a faster pace, more independence, and a more in- depth curriculum to thrive. Practical and clearly written... highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Help for the Classroom.......2006-04-09

I am a classroom teacher. I read this book in a course as part of my Masters in Education program. It has a lot of practical advice for busy classroom teachers. It is easy to read and to apply the ideas into your own classroom. I highly recommend it!

    4 out of 5 stars m.casey.......2000-11-28

I chose this book to read for my education class for the simple reason that I did not know what a differentiated classroom was. I have had ideas for a long time of how I would like to teach, I just never realized there was a name for it. This book explained in detail many examples that could be used in any classroom. This book was very easy to read because it was written in simple terms taken from stories of teachers all around the country. The only thing that I did not like was that a lot of the examples were aimed more at teachers who have been practicing for a while. This is definately a book that I will hold on to and refer to throughout my teaching career.

There are some good ideas in this book. However, I thought it was very unrealistic that the key to the author's approach is an immense amount of research on every child. This could certainly work at the elementary level, but at high school, with the enormous number of different kids we see each day, it doesn't seem at all realistic.

4 out of 5 stars Changing view on assessment.......2006-01-29

this book really worked to broaden my definition, view and understanding of assessment. as with another book by this author, the information did become repetitive, but remained helpful. I really enjoyed the variety of examples on how to formally and informally incorporate assessment in the classroom.
