I PASSED the CSET using this book!.......2007-08-22
I just passed the CSET using this book as my study guide. I gave it only 4 stars because I found the way that some of the information was presented (history and science) was very dry and hard to remember. I used the Everything You Need to Know About ______ Homework series by Zeman and Kelly as additional resources. They came in handy for the material I found a bit harder to study for (history and science). It does provide 2 practice tests which are beneficial to take to get an idea of how the test is laid out and how fast you need to move to get through the test to finish in time. You can take all 3 subtests at the same time and pass if you use this book and study hard.
Only book you need..........2007-05-26
for the CSET. This is all I looked at to prepare for the CSET and I have been out of school for 8 years. Scored 4/4 on all sections except math. Use it.
Very Weak Study Guide.......2007-01-30
I have been advised by those who help others prepare for the CSET that this is not a good study guide. So much information and so overwhelming and not all the answers are accurate.
I studied the books What your 6-8th grader needs to know.....I did that for math, geography, ca history etc etc and passed the CSET on the first try. I am not young..almost 50.
Good starting point........2006-12-08
Just received the good news. I passed all 3 subsets of the CSET the first time. Must say studying for and taking the test was one of the hardest things I've ever done. The volume of material (7 subjects) was overwhelming at times. Here's how I prepared. Hope it helps you. I started with Cliffs and the Hirsch series (4th, 5th, 6th grades). I then took an online practice test from the CSET website and failed all but the PE questions. It was very unsettling and discouraging. With one week left before the test (I started studying one month before it), I purchased and read the Boosalis book. After not doing very well on another online practice test, I went back and reviewed the history and science sections (my weaknesses) of Hirsch. One day before the test I reviewed test taking strategies. Although I'm glad I was scared by the practice tests and they forced me to study more than I thought would be necessary, know that the real test isn't quite as hard. Do not rely on Cliffs alone. They are a good starting point. Hirsch and Boosalis go deeper. Part of the challenge of the real thing is time management. I finished it with only 10 minutes to spare. It's a 5 hour test that seems to fly by. Be sure to manage your time wisely if you are taking all 3 subsets on the same day. The good news is it is possible to pass it all at once. I'm 25 years out of college and admittedly was a bit rusty. Had I known how difficult the test would be, I might have taken it in parts. Good luck everyone!
Is This Best They Can Do To Prepare You for the CSET?.......2006-10-29
This is a good book overall, but so much text about so much potential CSET content. These things are killing my brain and pockets. And they have nothing to do with your teaching ability. ~exhale~ sorry, had to vent. I also used a program by CA teachers which provides a concise and brief cross-section of real CSET content at cateachingsolutions.com. This stuff at Teaching Solutions was more to the point and closely reflected what I saw on the CSET. I would also recommend the CSET classes if you have a few weekends of free time.

Use at your own risk.......2007-07-16
Did Henry Ford actually invent the automobile? Were there actually only 4,000 slaves in the South? Like other reviewers, I've gleaned a lot of very useful information from this test guide, but there are so many errors -- dozens and dozens of them -- that I find myself repeatedly having to seek out other reference sources to verify the facts I am suspicious of. Use this test guide at your own risk.
Not worth the risk!.......2007-07-14
The innumerable grammar and spelling errors are irritating, but it is the content errors that prompted my first review of a book. This book claims that Isaac, son of Abraham, experienced two name changes: the first from Isaac to Jacob, the second from Jacob to Israel. It goes on to state that Isaac's 12 sons became the 12 tribes of Israel. Any 1st grade Sunday Schooler could tell you how wrong this is. Such a major error makes me suspect the rest of the content. My biggest regret is that I've spent so much time using it as a review guide only to now have to wonder if what I've learned is true.
Most Excellent Resource!.......2007-04-27
Overall, I feel this book is the best way to prepare for the CSET. I purchased the online study program and the Cliffs Test Prep and they were okay. Beating the CSET has an entire chapter devoted to stategies on taking the tests, as well as comprehensive outlines for the essay sections. There aren't any practice tests in this book, but memorizing practice tests is NOT a good method to study anyway. Besides, there are practice tests available online for free, if that's your thing. The only other advice I can give for passing the CSET is to take each subtest separately, unless you are exceptionally bright and/or live for stress. Best of luck to you!
Very Informative Text.......2007-04-22
This book is definitley informative with lots of information to know. I haven't taken the CSET yet, but hope to pass by studying from this book and other supplements.
I found the book to contain errors that are minor, but then became irritating. The errors sometimes confused me and it got to be very frustrating b/c you weren't sure what was right. Overall, a great book to study from, but have other supplemental books handy as well.
Best Prep Out There!.......2007-02-21
I purchased 4 books to prepare for the CSET and this one was by far the most comprehensive. If you know the info in this book, you will ACE the test. That is one of the problems, however. This book is SOOOOOO detailed that sometimes it's frustrating. However this book, in my opinion was KEY to me passing the test. The other books helped with practice tests, but I mainly studied from this one. Took all 3 tests the same day and passed them all on the first try. Good luck!!

I Wish I Hadn't ..........2007-02-24
...ordered this book. It was less than nonhelpful for studying for the Middle School Reading Language Arts Praxis II (1049). The content of the sample tests actually made me feel that I was in no way going to be able to pass this test. In addition, the provided no information that could help me learn what I apparently did not know. Get the Cliffs Test Prep. Just in time, I realized that it was a comprehensive, stand-alone study guide that will continue to be useful as a classroom reference tool. P.S. I passed with flying colors.
Outdated Information .......2006-10-29
Despite the 2005 copyright, this book has outdated test information, particularly for the subtest. It refers to a no-longer included section and has other inconsistencies with the current test. If you use this book, make very sure to read the test bulletin provided online very carefully to make sure you are studying for the test you will actually take. I found this book to be no help at all studying for the test. I had to get another study guide and luckily I did. Because of this other Praxis II study guide at [...](and prayer), I was able to pass the exam!! I really liked the answer key, not only did they explain WHY the answer is what it is, but why the other answers were incorrect. I found this very helpful in the areas I needed to strenghten. If you get no other study book, THIS is the one. I only had a total of about 8 hours study time with the Praxis II mentoring I received and I passed with flying colors.
Weak on Content.......2006-07-11
I was looking for help on one specific topic. There were 20 questions total. The real test will have 6 times that. In all, it didn't give me any idea the kinds of topics to expect or the difficulty of questions I'm looking at. And there's no explination for the answer key. Save your money. Buy a book that's specific to the test you're taking. Out of this entire book, I used 5 pages (counting the answer key).
REVIEW for ARCO Preparation for the Praxis II Exam, 18th edition .......2006-02-16
I bought the ARCO Preparation for the Parxis II Exam because it had material for several tests I needed to take without all the Praxis I content that I didn't need anymore. The book covers the Principles of Learning and Teaching tests at different grade levels and also has practice question sets for 21 subject assessments. I couldn't find another Praxis II book that had such broad coverage. The problem was that, with so many subject tests covered, there weren't as many questions as I would have liked for each of the tests I needed. But even so, I thought the book showed me what to expect on the tests so I wasn't surprised on test day. I didn't find any typos in my book so maybe they've all been fixed in later printings of the book.
not that happy.......2005-09-23
I was not that impressed with the book. It only gave one practice exam in each field. It also didn't mention areas that should be reviewed before taking the exam. I took the general science exam and it was hard, hopefully I passed so I won't have to take it again.

An excellent resource.......2006-07-14
My son used this book to prepare for the Praxis 1. He passed on the first try while many of his classmates did not.
Hey, I passed.......2006-07-08
I left graduate school 11 years ago. I haven't touched a book since. Now, I want to change careers and teach.
So, I have to take Praxis to teach in PA. I bought this book to help me prepare.
I found the summary sections on math and english very detailed. I skimmed over most, but for people who are on less familiar ground, I believe this is a great review. There are also several practice tests to take.
I skimmed the reviews for about a week, took one practice exam, and was prepared enough to ace the praxis I.
I do not like the specific tests section, however. They summarize what a test might cover, but don't give enough sample questions.

Okay, but Utilize More Resources.......2006-07-09
I bought a few different Praxis exam prep books and this book did an excellent job for both the Reading and Math sections for the Praxis I, but the Writing practice was way off and too simplistic compared to the actual Praxis I exam. Praxis II is not very useful for subject tests.
I completed this book about 2 weeks prior to taking the Praxis I exam series. I had a perfect score for the reading section, which I finished 20 minutes early. The math, which I was totally scared about (and studied the least), I scored a 186 (out of 190) and I didn't even make it to the end of that exam, which means the problems I completed must have been correct (phew!). Both the reading and math portions of the Kaplan review were very representative of the actual test. The Writing (multiple choice only), was not well represented in the Kaplan review and much too simplistic. The actual exam had passages written so terribly, it was hard to even decipher what each passage was trying to convey (a trap I fell into). Just look for the subject, etc. and approach each passage the same way. I passed the Writing portion with a 177, but my score was way under what I had expected from myself. I used the entire writing time for both sections. The essay portion was fairly well represented and I received a 10/12 score. Keep your essay to the point. I made sure to list my subject and three key points on my scrap paper. Then, I listed 2-3 sentences under each key point. It is easy to stray and lose track of time and by taking the first 5 minutes to get my acute thoughts down on paper, the intro and conclusion were easy. Get another writing guide to study so you can have more exposure to the multiple choice questions
I am preparing for the Praxis II and was excited to use this book, but I am using it for the Biology endorsement and it's way too easy. The practice test has only a few questions, which I answered all correctly in about 10 minutes. That makes me wonder what I'm missing...if the Biology Praxis II is two hours in length, I need to find some more study guides!
I hope my comments help other people do well on their Praxis exams. There is so much information in this book, I am sure every teacher or future teacher will find something useful. In regards to the Praxis II, I think the subject endorsements need to be in a book of their own.
PRAXIS II: Elementary Education Practice Tests.......2006-01-22
I bought this book to prepare for the PRAXIS II 0011 test. There was only one test provided in the book. The solution section offered detailed explanations, which I thought would be useful on the actual test and I studied the information carefully. It ends up it wasn't helpful at all on the test - the actual test I took stressed reading and writing diagnosis more than anything on the practice test. I don't know if I just so happened to have the bad luck of getting a version of the test which had very little of the material covered in the practice test, or if the book just doesn't really give you a realistic expectation of what is going to be covered on the real test. My advice is don't waste your time and money on this book if you are going to take the 0011 test, study your textbooks from your child development classes and teaching language arts classes, it would be a better use of your time. I can't speak for the other practice tests and the book does contain a lot of general test taking strategies.
Praxis Help, Secrets Revealed Here.......2004-10-23
I throughly enjoyed this book and found it did me some good on the Praxis. Teaching Solutions was closer to the real exam at praxis-test-coaching.com. The practice question in the Kaplan book presents a good variety questions you'll see. You don't get test coaching and the software, but I still rate it a 4 based on amount of information.

Emblematic of modern education's shortcomings.......2005-08-16
On page 340, they tell us about "theory": They tell us what it applies to; what it attempts to explain; what happens when it is tested and established; and what is its purpose. Nowhere do they tell us what a "theory" IS. Worse, even this "talk around the subject" approach is fuzzy. We are told that theory "applies to a BROAD range of phenomena and is applied to a SMALL aspect of nature" (my caps). In the process of describing theory, they diverge into the requirements for a hypothesis to be considered scientific. However, they don't define hypothesis either. Perhaps they define it elsewhere (I doubt it), but the reader has no way of determining this, because there is no index. The rest of the book's sections are similarly vaguely written. Like so much of education today, this book seems unable to directly define and elucidate the subjects; it only "covers" them.
The best test preparation for the MSAT.......2003-02-16
This is a great book. I was so nervouse to take MSAT,since so many people said that it is difficult. But I passed it in one shot.I migrated USA 1 1/2 years ago and I am not a native English speaker. But this book helped me to get 14 out of 18 raw score in Language Arts section of Content area exercise. What matters is how you study using the book. This book gives you an idea of what is expected. If you need more clarification on some concepts, better you do it with other sources eg: internet. Beleive me, there can't be one single book that matches with different study/learning patterns of people. But I spend one month carefully studying each section while using other sources for clarification (I am a full time student in a university, married with two kids going to school, do a part time job). Don't expect everything from this book or dont be scared of MSAT or CSET.
PASSED ON THE 1ST SHOT.......2003-02-10
I KEEP HEARING HOW DIFFICULT THE MSAT IS! ITS NOT DIFFICULT. THE TRICK IS TO ACTUALLY STUDY. THIS BOOK HAS AN 8 WEEK STUDY PROGRAM. THE CONTENT ON THE MSAT IS ELEMENTARY, MIDLE SCHOOL AT BEST, BUT WE ALL LEARNED THIS STUFF SO LONG AGO THAT WE ALL FORGOT IT. IF YOU REALLY WANT TO PASS, GET THIS BOOK, AND FOLLOW THE STUDY GUIDE. PUT IN THE TIME, BELIEVE ME, THE SACRIFICE IS WORTH IT!!!
So - So.......2002-01-02
The practice tests are nothing like the real tests. That is the main problem. The informational sections were well done. A lot more information is presented than other MSAT books. There is much more detail than other books. But the practice tests make me wonder what they were thinking. For example, almost all the questions in the science section are part of a passage that relates to the questions. Most of the Literature questions are the same way.
Book Description
This test preparation book includes two full-length practice exams based upon the most recently administered MSAT. Comprehensive review sections cover every aspect of this diverse and challenging test, and detailed explanations accompany every answer to simplify the preparation process.

Not Helpful.......2005-01-11
I really wanted this book to be useful in preparing for the MSAT exam, but I was thoroughly disappointed. The information in each section is very unorganized, which makes the book very difficult to even read, let alone absorb information from. The content covered is also problematic. Especially in the history section, some content (such as British rulers) is covered in way more detail than the test requires you to know, while other topics (such as Native American and Asian history) are barely mentioned or completely ignored. Even the kind of information in the book is not useful. Instead of giving the most important and useful information on a person or topic in a concise and organized way, this book meanders through subjects, mentioning an anectode about one person here, commenting on another topic there. I often felt as though I were talking to someone who was trying to prove how much they knew about a particular topic by throwing out random and often obscure facts to impress me. I also bought the practice exam with detailed answers produced by ETS, and found that much more useful. Although this test does not contain any review of the subjects covered by the MSAT, the detailed answers to multiple choice and essay questions give suggestions about what content to study. For me, making a topic list from the practice exams then looking up that information in subject-specific textbooks worked the best. I ended up setting aside the REA book in frustration, and hardly using it at all.
Don't be fooled.......2004-04-28
Don't be fooled by the thickness, or the breadth of the information in the table of contents. The content of this 'preparation' book is extremely weak, and does not offer adequate information on the MSAT, nor the CSET. It looks as though the publishers have submitted several reviews here--the consistency is highly suspect, and an obvious marker to the fraud of these illegitimate reviews. The book is heavy on fact--although arbitrary at that--and light on theory, and the latter is what you're tested on all subjects for the new CSET. In particular, the language and linguistic section of this book is astonishingly poor:
"'The meaning of a word,' wrote Ludwig Wittgenstein in his Philosophical Investigations, 'is its use in the language'; and by so writing, he revolutionized the study of language and linguistics."
Anecdotal as this may be, it's completely insignificant to the topic you'll be tested on. I suggest you read other text books and primary sources to master the exam. Waste your money on this and rely on it solely to prepare for the exam and you'll find yourself without a passing score. You will have, however, a fine door stop, if you choose not to burn it in protest.
a good history and social sciences review source.......2003-05-23
While the MSAT is no longer being offered, I feel that those who will be taking the CSET will still benefit from the information contained in this book. If you struggle the most in history, this is the book for you. Half of the book (excluding the practice exams)is a detailed review of American and World History. It covers anything you could imagine would be asked on the exam in this section. The book also has a good math and literature section. The book's weak points are the other sections: science, art, and human development. I passed the MSAT on my first try using this book along with other books which I highly reccomend. Get the Cliffs Notes MSAT book which goes into less detail but is good to skim through as an outline to accompany the REA book. Finally, get the 4th, 5th, and 6th grade "What Your --- Grader Needs To Know" books for some more facts. The combination of these 5 books will help you succeed as long as you study hard and don't give up. I did it, and so can you. Good luck on the CSET!
Good General preparation.......2003-02-26
This book was helpful in terms of preparing me for the format of the exam. I, like so many others, recommend the Hirsch books (What your xxx grader needs to know) for detail on subject matter. I took the test on 1/11//03 and passed! If you are getting your credential in California, the MSAT is being phased out. Hopefully there will be study guides for the CSET (MSAT's sucessor) soon. CSET is a different test, not just a name change from MSAT.
Good General preparation.......2003-02-22
I used this book as part of my study stategy and am happy to say that I passed my MSAT on the first try. What you have to bear in mind is the huge scope of information that MSAT potentially covers, makes it impossible for any review book to hit on questions that may actually appear on your exam. The Hirsch books(What every 4th, 5th 6th grader needs to know) were very helpful in focusing on specifics, in terms of facts. California is changing exams for teacher credentialing and will now require the CSET instead of the MSAT. I understand the form is different, fewer essays and more emphasis on California history, but the rest is not too much different than MSAT. Have confidence in yourself, eat a good breakfast, bring a snack and don't psyche yourself out. I am in my mid-40's and am working on my Master's as well as a credential after being away from school since 1977. You can do it!

I am a fairly bright, soon to be, graduate student and I just failed the MSAT because I used only THIS study guide to prepare... not only are there TONS of mistakes... the practice tests in this book do not even come CLOSE to what the real test is like... I was blown away by how hard it is... buy something else to study if you want to pass...
Buy another book to prepare for the MSAT.......2002-11-22
I took the MSAT this past September, and missed the essay portion by 3 points! So, I'm taking it again this Saturday.
I used this book to study for the MSAT the first time around and overall it is just okay. There are errors here and there and although they included 2 sample exams, they do not even go over the answer for the essays. Instead, they tell you to take it to a teacher to grade! Which I think is lame - like you have time to do that. You get what you pay for.
"The Best Test Preparation for the MSAT" by the Research & Education Association is much more thorough and seems very accurate. This book was recommended by university professors. I'm using it as I write this...
Disgusted.......2001-09-12
I stopped using this review after I got to the science section. I found three very bad errors, all biology related. After that, I figured if they could make that many mistakes in just one section, there were probably a number of others. It looks like they were in a rush to get the thing published and only did a very cursory editing job. It's a good thing I bought another Prep guide when I bought this one. And hey, it gave the biology professors I showed it to a good laugh. I just wish I would have read the other reviews before I spent my money and time on this piece of junk.

Think carefully before you buy.......2000-01-29
Let me say that this is the cheapest of the MSAT books. And you get what you pay for.
ALthough this book helped me understand the structure of each component of the test, it did not provide any additional help in terms of content.
There are so many errors in this book, it makes me envious of the author and the publisher who just republish this book every so often. Why they don't find someone to professionally clean up the book is beyond me. I am sure the author is laughing all the way to the bank.
I would have given this book 1 star but it does provide a practice test with answers (suggested responses on essays).
Finally, just be prepared to be overwhelmed at the MSAT if you use only this book to study.

Little You Need to Know.......2001-06-23
I bought this book to prepare for the school psychology speciality exam. It was useless for this purpose. The mock school psychology exam provided no explanations for the answers, nor did it mimic the actual exam offered by ETS in length or content. I ended returning the book to Amazon.com; it contained nothing that helped me prepare for exam that I had not already garnered from the ETS materials available for free.
This book is not everything it claims to be........1999-06-01
The book does give explanations of its answers, however it does not have any PLT exams in it. Therefore, it does not have "everything you need to know."
This book only contains sample tests........1999-02-13
This book only contains sample tests, with NO explanations of the answers. It is very misleading to say that this book helps "prepare" you for the tests. The "cassette" that "comes with the book" is actually a coupon that you mail in with $7.95 to get the cassette. The title "Everything you need to score high on Praxis II" and the publishers' description of the book (parroted by Amazon.com) are fraudent. I felt that I was ripped off when I bought this book. One would be better off getting the sample test booklet sold by ETS.
