Customer Reviews:
Excellent!.......2007-05-18
This book deserves a "10" not a "5". This is one of those rare "self-help" books that is down to earth, easy to read and you can put into practice what you learned immediately. There is no psychobabble fluff here. It does not spend 200 pages discussing the core of the problem then only 1 chapter dedicated to resolving it. Mr. Khan did an excellent job condensing all his knowledge into small concise chapters about all aspects of life - from self, attitude, work & relationships; every bit of advise is useable and instantly doable. This book presents common human problems and effective/practical ways to deal with them now. How it works is you find the chapter that addresses your problem and it tells you how to effectively begin to deal with it. I cannot recommend this book more. If you have to buy only one self-help book, make it this one. It is that good.
It DOES really help.......2007-05-13
Great advises, very easy to read. You can refer back to it over and over again. The author talks about: Attitude, Work and People. Format: articles.
Brilliant.......2007-01-10
This book is everything it says it is and more !!.
Thanks Adam...you make lifes problems into a way i can understand and change !.
Everything you (really!) need to know........2006-12-08
Suppose you are an intelligent human being that until now has been thinking: all these self help-books ... can they be really working? There are so many of them! I'm sure all these books repeat the same old tired cliches! And all these screaming covers look so tasteless!
Ten years ago I was thinking that. As I am a very curious journalist and writer (in Amsterdam, the Netherlands), I started to read self help-books. I thought: there are so many!, I'm sure all these books repeat the same old tired cliches!, all these screaming covers look so tasteless!
After my ten years of reading these books I know: there are indeed lots and lots of these tasteless, screaming cliche-books. But don't let that scare you. You are doing yourself a disfavor if you abandon the whole genre. As in every genre there are brilliant exceptions.
One of these is the extremely practical and sensible book "Self-Help Stuff that Works - How to become more effective with your actions and feel good more often" by Adam Khan. It specters the whole genre of self-help. Mr Khan read all these (scientific, serious and not so serious) books, thought about them all, selected the worthy thoughts and theories and wrote in 117 chapters and 368 pages everything there is to know, everything you need to know. It's easy to read (because it's well written), it tells great stories and it is concise. It made my life better.
It makes promises and delivers. The 117 chapters are divided in three parts: Attitude, Work and People. It tells you THE thing to know (and to do!) about, for example: how to be a sensible optimist, the best way to criticize, what to do with failure, when you are too polite, how to improve your self-esteem, how to find a lifemate and 100 more necessary things to know. This book tells you things that are not a luxury to know. In a modest, intelligent, moving, funny and easy to read-way.
Indeed, no bull, no frills, no hype.
really helpful stuff.......2006-08-09
Not everyone has had a happy childhood or has been educated by appropiate parents. If ever wonder how to deal with bad feelings, depression, anger, or just impossibility to "fit" in this world in an effective way, this book contains logical advise, wisdom in every of the chapters it presents. A must buy.

Commitment, Character, Competence.......2007-07-31
The advice in this book extends beyond the professional world and echoes in everyday life. This makes sense; we don't live double-lives, and there exists no magic, secret formula for success in business, medicine, or raising kids. It comes down to basic human virtues.
Commitment. Character. Competence. These attributes fuel the engines of success in life.
It boggles the mind how many books or programs offer axiomatic platitudes such as "it's not what you know but who you know" or "success is what makes you happy, so be true to yourself."
None such wasteful advice finds its way into this book. Rather, Dr. Irwin points out the objective, observable standards that exist in life, and our need to continually evaluate ourselves and measure our choices against those standards.
As the book says; it's simple, but it isn't easy. I highly recommend this book.
Run with the Bulls Without Getting Trampled.......2007-07-08
Tim Irwin's book, "Run with the Bulls," is by far the most insightful business book I have read this year. It causes you to take a look beneath the surface and determine how you can lead a life of significance and find meaning in your work. There are very few business books that take you to this level of personal reflection. "Run with the Bulls" is one of them.
run with the bulls.......2007-04-19
"Run with the Bulls" offers a practical approach to finding meaning and fulfillment in our careers. Tim Irwin uses straightforward language to express complex ideas. He has an engaging way with personal anecdotes that serve both to clarify his themes and share aspects of his family life. One of the book's many pleasures is its frequent use of cultural references. Dr Irwin's interests range from "New Yorker" cartoons to TS Eliot to popular movies like "Groundhog Day." His experience as a psychologist has given him unique insight into the complex issues that so often derail our attempts to pursue excellence.
If you are running your career you need this book.......2007-03-08
The best complete compilation and illustration of the keys to a great life and career.
Great Stories with a Powerful Message.......2007-01-31
"Run with the Bulls" is hard book to put down. I savored each chapter. The author tells real life stories as the foundation for a powerful message on principles of leadership. After reading the book I passed it on to my 18 year-old son who read it in a week. I wish I had known the principles which Irwin sets forth so clearly when I began my career! The stampeding bulls will trample the energy and enthusiasm out of many young professionals. I ordered six copies for my family members to help them avoid that fate.

Instant gratification junkies seeking self-awareness are bound to find the title of Ariel and Shya Kane's book extremely attractive. And seductive it is: who wouldn't like to discover enlightenment in a moment? The key, explain the Kanes, is getting to the moment: being fully present in the here and now without trying to manipulate or change what you see. According to the Kanes, "all problems are a projection towards the future of possible realities based on the past." Consequently, inhibitors to living life directly include the inability to let go of one's history--to forgive people and events from the past--as well as resistance to the circumstances of one's life, and repetitive, mechanical thoughts and behaviors. The essence of transformation is "a non-judgmental witnessing, viewing, or seeing of yourself and how you interact with your life," which stands in direct opposition to therapy's approach of working on one's history to bring about change. Here, awareness of a prejudice or pattern of behavior is--simply and immediately--enough to transform it.
Principles of awareness, self-realization, and enlightenment, of course, are nothing new, and the Kanes are careful to point this out. Some readers may wonder, then, why the Kanes refer to themselves as pioneers of a "revolutionary new technology," and whether Instantaneous Transformation(R) really requires a trademark. Nevertheless, Working on Yourself Doesn't Work is warm, anecdotal, and conversationally written, and includes general suggestions and pointers for the reader rather than rules to memorize. All in all, it is a gentle and potentially powerful invitation to enter a new and liberating state of mind. --Svenja Soldovieri
Book Description
Working On Yourself Doesn't Work reveals a revolutionary new approach that will allow you to reach a state of awareness and "centeredness" that in the past was rarely, if ever, achieved. This book contains the keys to transform your life. It is a radical departure from the concept of working on yourself to bring about change. There are no gimmicks to learn, no rules to live by, or preset paths to follow. The Kanes' Instantaneous Transformation technology is about a change of states, a shifting of realities -- which will produce a quantum shift in your life. By reading this book, you will discover-- How to remain centered in stressful or challenging circumstances, A more honest, true and natural way of being that will allow you to be increasingly effective and satisfied in all aspects of your life, How to have relationships that are more loving, exciting and supportive, How to dissolve mechanical habits that rob you of spontaneity, joy and creativity.
"The clarity and focus I have attained by being exposed to the Kanes and their way of seeing makes the difference between life and death when leading my men down a smoke-filled hallway, searching for people trapped by fire. I feel extremely fortunate to have met them."
Lieutenant Mike Donlon
New York City Fire Department."
"What the Kanes have to offer is so very simple and yet so very profound. In the garden of all the flowers for personal transformation, and I have sampled many, this is the Rose. With great love and respect, the Kanes offer keys to awareness like no one else I have ever met. Their work is truly remarkable." Johnnie M. Jackson, Jr.Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary

Customer Reviews:
Life really can be this simple. WOW!!!!!! YEN Florida.......2007-03-27
I am a professional female that has felt out of place since I was 13. I have seen therapists and searched for something to fix myself my whole life. I have read many self help books and done The Landmark Forum. In 1998 I landed in an AA room and was taught the 12 Steps of recovery. I read the BIG BOOK and thought the stories were exaggerated since I couldn't relate to them. I stopped drinking and took the suggested steps; taking a "fearless moral inventory" of myself by identifying my so called defects of character. As I grew in recovery, I was to take a daily inventory of myself which constantly reinforced that there was always something wrong with me that needed fixing. I now have 7 years of uninterrupted sobriety and recently I had the pleasure of reading the book "Working on Yourself Doesn't Work" and WOW!!! Did I get it...
See in AA we strive to live a day at a time but to be able to live a moment at a time was not something I had ever considered (I mean who can live in the moment there is so much to plan for?). It wasn't by doing the 12 steps that I learned I was living my life based on exaggerated truths made up as a child. These ideas ranged from "don't let anyone ever tell you what to do "to" don't ever depend on any man". These ideas never supported me in my life. They in fact have hindered every relationship I ever had whereby I never married or had children.
Now that I am aware of those ideas thru reading this book, I have never looked back or thought about them again. I have quit trying to work on myself. I have accepted my life and everything about it.
My life is so easy today. I have actually been able to save a relationship that I unconsciously have been sabotaging for the last 3 years. I saw clearly why I was afraid of success. Since I now have the insights, I choose not to go back to the past and judge myself or others for anything that happened. I also choose not to spend time in a place that doesn't exist yet. I can just concentrate on the fabulous moment and how it feels to be here right now. Talk about freedom from the bondage of self. My shackles have been taken off permanently. Thank you to Ariel and Shya for sharing their incredible experiences with the world and most importantly for the ease in which they do it.
disappointing.......2007-03-12
I orded this too quickly and should have looked closer at the inside, and the reviews. Its just another of many "God is who you want him to be, find your own way..nirvana, happy place yada yada written to sell, not to help books..I have to say that if God is who you want him to be?? then how could HE be God? Must be YOU thats God..anyway the book was disgustingly typical.
Classic guide book to living in the moment.......2007-03-09
There have been many insightful and helpful books written over time on the subject of living in the moment and only one that stands out for me as the best...and this book is it. It's the best in my opinion because the tools and ideas presented truly work in creating a life where lasting satisfaction and fulfillment can happen. It is definitely possible to live in the moment, day in day out, where the bumps on your life's road do not need to throw you off your path. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in living a life they dream of...it's possible for you because it's happened and continues to happen for me in my own life.
The Best Book I Know.......2006-11-15
The title of this book may seem enigmatic, but it is the foundation of having a wonderful life. The reader may wonder, If I don't work on myself, won't I become complacent? Not at all! The reason that working on yourself doesn't work, the Kanes explain, is that it presupposes that there is something wrong with you. But, as their second principle states, you can only be exactly as you are in any given moment. As long as you imagine you are messed up and in need of repair you resist the way that your life is showing up. This leads to the first principle: anything that you resist persists and grows stronger. If you want to see a behavior stick around, resistance - the adding of oppositional energy - will do the trick.
Although working on yourself doesn't work, there is much you can discover about your mechanical ways of operating that can improve the quality of your life. Through awareness - defined by the Kanes as the non-judgmental seeing of anything - your experience of living can shift without your having to do anything else. This is encompassed by the Kanes' third principle: anything you see exactly as it is will complete itself.
Does it sound all too simple? It is, and it works. This is why I recommend this book, more than any other, to the people in my life. After years of searching for well being - attending workshops, reading numerous books, and even staying on a farm to find a better way of living - Working on Yourself Doesn't Work is the only thing that I have found that does work. Read again and again, the book makes life easy, magical, and effortless.
Internal Light!.......2006-10-29
"Working on yourself doesn't work"- I have read this book over and over again for nearly two years. The interesting title initially got my attention, but ten minutes into reading it, I knew I had found a treasure!
There are many books out there that lift your spirits, but not often have I found something written with such clarity and wisdom. Beauty and simplicity shine through the core concept - Transformation. In reading this book I came to realize nothing produces happiness like the deep satisfication which comes from within: If I am true to myself, and not judging what I see, I can simply be me and be there for others. Powerful!I highly recommend anyone who is interesed in having a great life to read this book!

Customer Reviews:
Communication Book not Effective.......2007-03-28
I purchased this book for my staff to read as part of improving the communication in our group. It was pretty basic; nothing in there we didn't already know. Even thought the author wrote it for adults in mind, it seemed like it was more on a child's level. It was not helpful at all. The group didn't finish the last two chapters: "Getting a Letter to Its Destination" and "Communicating Using Technology" - not worth the money.
Mastering Communication.......2007-01-02
The book discusses skills that are invaluable tools to interacting with people. Effective communication skills are essential for success in business and personal lives.
What the author writes sounds obvious but we tend to forget, communicate badly, and often make a bad situation worse by the way we communicate. Those wishing to learn the basics of communication or just want to refresh their expertise in this field will find the book useful and helpful.
The book will help the reader to understand effective communication, and it explains how to communicate your message in the best possible way. After reading the book, you should have a better understanding of how to communicate effectively, to people and groups, through spoken, written and non verbal communications.
This is a practical book that I return to often. This is a valuable book for anyone who is having problems in communications.
Book Description
The Power of Positive Confrontation is for everyone who was never taught, or never realized, that between “bully” and “wimp” is a range of behavior that is positive, dignified, and effective for dealing with life’s bothersome situations. The skills it teaches will not only improve your ability to confront others, but will also help you to live a more conflict-free life. Filled with hundreds of often entertaining real-life examples drawn from Barbara Pachter’s many years of teaching assertiveness and business etiquette, The Power of Positive Confrontation is as perceptive about people and their behavior as it is clear-headed about the strategies you need to handle yourself confidently and effectively in all confrontational situations.
Customer Reviews:
good information.......2007-05-07
this book has common sense tips for clearer, more effective communication. I recommend it.
Good constructive advice, without being too touch-feely and abstract.......2005-08-20
I like the tone of the book. Its not about self esteem etc. It provides valuable concrete techniques for dealing with conflict effectively and constructively.
Perhaps three chapter's worth of usable content.......2001-02-25
It's only natural for a popular self-help speaker with a truly great message to want to put it into book form. The Power of Positive Confrontation teaches a truly great technique for confronting others that will help everyone who has trouble standing up for him or herself. Too bad there's only about three chapter's worth of actual content in its sixteen chapters. Instead the author gets into telling us how to dress for success, how to convey the information that a friend or loved one is in the hospital, do's and don'ts of International Travel along with several chapters of warm-up before finally getting to her actual WAC technique. Don't get me wrong, I still recommend this book highly but an abridged cassette version would be a lot less painful.
Why Win-Win" Is So Much More Effective Than "Zero-Sum".......2001-01-05
With Susan Magee, Barbara Pachter carefully analyzes all of the skills anyone needs to resolve conflicts at work, home, and in life. Confrontation is inevitable. Think about it: What REALLY upsets you? How about "road rage" when someone else cuts you off, tailgates, deliberately forces you to the side of the road, etc.? Or how about "office politicians" who lie both to your face and behind your back, thrive on hurtful gossip, and in countless other ways try to advance themselves at the cost of others? Make no mistake about it: Negative Confrontation also has power.
Pachter has a specific objective in mind: To enable those to read the book to master the skills needed to resolve confrontation is positive, constructive, and beneficial ways. As indicated in the Preface, she wants each reader to be able to say "I don't feel frustrated any more..." or "In the past I would have sulked or complained until the person got the hint, now I can just say something..." or "Annoying things don't bother me as much because I know I can say something now."
The book consists of 16 chapters, ranging from "Positive Confrontation -- What It Is and How It Can Make Your Life Better" to "International Etiquette", with Chapter 16 followed by a "Final 12-Step Pep Talk." Over the course of the book, Pachter covers just about every conceivable situation in which conflict can occur at work, home, and in life. I think this book will be invaluable to individual readers as well as to senior-level executives who can use much of the material to help those whom they supervise to master the same skills.
What A Life Saver!.......1999-12-24
I've never been very good at confrontation; I always feel like I've said or done the right thing in the wrong way. This book changed that for good. Positive confrontation is something we all aspire to but rarely achieve. I've used what I learned in this book to deal with issues at work and at home -- and it works! Now I handle confrontation in the "right" way, and things work out much better both for me and for the person on the other side of the issue. This is a great book!

The Kanes reveal how to recognize and bypass the pitfalls to having a happy and satisfying relationship. This book provides a road map to realizing a love relationship to its fullest and it is also a guide to self-discovery and well-being, since the ability to create a magical relationship starts with one's relationship to oneself.

The Wisdom of the Ages.......2007-09-16
Some people might think that it is impossible to create successful relationships immediately, but the Shyas' discuss the concepts that will allow you to do just that. Combining Eastern and Western philosophies, this book deserves a its devoted following and its high, customer ratings. The concepts in this book are timeless and infinitely valuable. I'd also suggest a separately produced, newly-released DVD that is complementary to this book and provides very specific techniques for applying these Shya insights: see the web site of www.tcap.us (the DVD is about building confidence, but it it much more than that).
Pure relationship gold!.......2007-09-10
The golden cover is appropriate, because what's inside is pure gold! In this book, Ariel and Shya Kane share three timeless principles and many real-life examples that will help you to have satisfying relationships with everyone, from the most important people in your life, to the people that you meet each day. Whether you're looking to connect with new people, to reconnect with your loved ones, or are just intrigued by the possibility of "Magical" relationships, this book is for you. It transformed my life - give it a shot!
Brilliant for Friendships and Work, As Well As Marriage!.......2007-08-22
How to Create A Magical Relationship is deceptively simple, yet brilliant. At first, I felt one of its major ideas--that seeing a behavioral pattern, without fixing it, is enough to complete it-- was too simple. Then I began to see how it applied to my own life in ways I couldn't have imagined.
An example: I decided a long time ago that my mother should have learned to speak my father's first language, Spanish. I was embarrassed that she couldn't speak it well, and thought that she should work harder to learn it. As a result, I decided that when I grew up, I would study languages. Well, I did, but because I learned in a very competitive way, I was overly-sensitive to criticism, and I frequently got burned out. I even destroyed a couple of friendships by insisting that bilingual friends divide languages equally- in other words, if I had a Korean friend, I wanted us to spend half of our time speaking Korean, even if the friend was fluent in English. If they didn't agree to this, I'd feel they were cheating me.
This book helped me to recognize that pattern and even see small ways I competed in my own marriage! I still study languages, and I have a great relationship with my husband, but when my competitive side shows up, I recognize it, and in the seeing, I am able to avoid it. As a result, I'm able to listen better, take correction, and have more fun. My marriage AND friendships AND my work life are easier, and yes, more magical.
Incredible new possibilities.......2007-06-05
"How to Create a Magical Relationship" is a perfect guideline for possibilities. It touches on all aspects of relationships: the one with
yourself, your partner, parents, friends, colleagues - just every relationship! Easy and fun to read, Ariel and Shya Kane explain the principles of transformation and living in the moment. How awareness and not working on yourself open up doors. A whole new approach that makes all the difference! I highly recommend it.
A phenomenal and groundbreaking book! .......2007-06-01
This book is incredible and inspiring. The authors approach relationships (both to ourselves and to each other) from a very pragmatic angle. They put the onus of the relationship on the individual: "It takes two to fight and one to end the fight" is something that I really can see now. I recognize myself and my patterns of behavior in my relationships more clearly than ever before. For example, how my unexamined, mechanical behaviors can trigger unwanted reactions and patterns from other people (especially people who are close to me like my parents). I see how I can cause a chain reaction to occur and I now have the ability to either 'go there' or take a brand-new road. I don't have to be a victim anymore and can instead take 100% responsibility for my life. To the spiritual seeker, a book like this is a blessing!

Customer Reviews:
Excellent for couples and couples' therapists.......2007-09-14
This is my favorite couples' therapy book. Not only do I use it constantly when I work with couples, but I've recommended and shared it with my interns and with psychiatric residents who are working with couples for the first time. Practical and down-to-earth, it provides useful examples and exercises for couples, both new and long-term. I highly recommend it.
A very practical book!.......2003-04-18
I use this book when I do therapy with couples. It is very practical and it has really helped.
Excellent book for improving communication with your partner.......2002-05-07
"Sigmund told his longtime girlfriend Robin that he was willing to marry her if she would do 135 sit-ups a day to tighten her stomach muscles, allow him to buy her a more stylish wardrobe, read fewer novels so she could pay more attention to him...." Not all relationships start off this precariously. The authors state "Relationships can gradually run down. Early pleasures become commonplace and boring. Minor flaws become major flaws. Charming eccentricities become irritating."
Couple Skills is an excellent source for learning essential communication skills. If you can sidestep some erroneous theoretical explanations (e.g., behaviorist or systems theory explanations and occasional moral relativism), you can gain lifetime skills from this book. It includes realistic examples and useful exercises in each of its four sections: basic communication skills, advanced skills, managing anger and conflict, and understanding and changing what goes wrong.
You will learn to identify barriers to active listening (e.g., sparring, derailing, placating, mindreading, selective attention, rehearsing your response). You will also learn to give feedback that is immediate, honest and supportive rather than brutal (or camouflaged). You will learn how to identify and express your needs. Did your parents prohibit the expression of anger? ...or of pride? Learn how to overcome ingrained repression of your genuine feelings.
The authors emphasize "clean communication" (i.e., how to give whole messages, not half-truths or disguised messages). They cover negotiation skills including seven classic methods of compromise. The section on anger and conflict helps you identify aversive strategies such as threatening to leave, guilt-tripping, derailing the conversation, belittling or blaming. The authors offer an alternative "key attitude" to help you deal with inevitable conflicts. They cover methods of assertively responding to criticism. As stated in this excellent book, "...(A)ssertive behavior allows you to stand up for your rights, express personal likes and dislikes, accept compliments comfortably, disagree with someone openly, and say no." Couple Skills can help strengthen, improve or rescue your relationship.
Great book for all couples!.......2000-11-20
This book offers suggestions and advice from a "panel" of authors. They have insightful techniques and point out how many times so many problems that can result in divorce or breakups can be attributed to a lack of communication. I highly recommend reading this book if you are single or involved, it's useful for everyone.

Amazing.......2006-02-24
I am a writer. I have written many letters for all sorts of reasons, so I thought, "How could someone write letters for me?" And then I opened the book. It was as if I had written the words on the pages. Amazing, truly amazing. I now have in my library a book that will save me hours in thinking up my own original version, and because letters now require much less time, I will be more likely to the send one that may otherwise have been put off. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Buy Dianna's book. Letters get action far more than phone calls or emails.
Terrific resource.......2006-01-28
Dianna Booher has compiled an exhaustive collection of sample letters. From the busy person who just needs some help getting started, to those who find themselves in a situation where they know something in writing is warranted but just can't seem to find the right words, this book is a tremendous help; the letters are long, detailed, and anticipate many different possible situations you might be facing. Even if you think you are already a good letter writer, you will find good ideas galore. A very good reference book for anyone's bookshelf.
