The first and only Praxis II guide devoted exclusively to the PLT a must for aspiring teachers who need to pass any of the four PLT tests Praxis II Principles of Learning and Teaching tests (PLT) are a requirement for teaching licenses in 20 states, and between September 2001 and July 2004, approximately 128,000 people took the four PLT tests. This one-of-a-kind, PLT-specific book includes test-prep materials for all four PLT tests Early Childhood, Grades K-6, Grades 5-9, and Grades 7-12. Materials for each of the four tests include a self-assessment test, subject reviews, and two practice tests, for a total of 12 tests in this guide that fills a void in review materials for professional licensure examinations. Diane E. Kern, PhD (Wakefield, RI), is Assistant Professor of Education at the University of Rhode Island, and a member of the School of Education's ad hoc committee on licensure tests.

Wonderful Preparation Tool!.......2007-08-05
This book was a very thorough study guide. The practice tests were very valuable, as was the extensive information regarding theorists and other information that was on the test. I just took my Praxis today, and I left feeling very confident, thanks to this book!
Very Helpful.......2007-06-14
This book was much easier to use than the one from ETS. Information for each category on the test were easily accessible and clearly stated. The format for the case studies and multiple choice questions were exactly like the actual test. If you are looking for a book that is going to truly help you prepare for the PLT, this is it!
Worked for me!.......2007-04-07
I am pursuing an alternate licensure track in Ohio and needed to take the PLT 7-12 as part of the process. Although I finished a MA Ed degree in 2004, I didn't have the background in this material like current undergrads might. So I needed a sound text for not only review but also with important topics fleshed out for study. I read this book cover to cover twice and made review lists with major points to study starting one month prior to the test. I did all the multiple choice questions and reviewed the free response for all the age groups.
I just got my score and passed with a 179. Ohio's passing score is 165. This book works!
Helpful!.......2007-02-08
I used this book to study for the 0041 and 0042 exams. I found the guide more accurate in predicting what types of questions would be on the 0042 exam than on the 0041. I found the 0041 exam questions to be more difficult than the sample questions in the book, but the book served as a good starting point for studying. If you're taking the 0041 exam, study the time periods religiously! This is probably the best guide out there that is not more expensive than the exam itself.
I ended up passing both exams with excellent scores!
Great test review book for content summary.......2007-01-10
I bought this book to prepare for the Praxis PLT 7-12 and found it extremely helpful. The content review section is extremely thorough and covers all of the material you need to know for the exam in a concise and organized manner. It made it easy and accessible to find info about different educational theorist rather than searching through a psych of teaching textbook. The review questions are also helpful and good for praxis. Definately, worth the buy if you need a review book!

This Book is Terrible!!!.......2005-10-25
In studying for the Praxis I test, I have found many typos in this book as well as numerous incorrect answers. I have spent a great deal of my "study time" researching answers that are incorrect in the book.
I was told that these test prep books are all the same and that one book is just as good as any other. I sure hope not. I definitely would not recommend this study guide to anyone.
Not a good study guide for Praxis II.......2005-01-18
I bought this book because of the rave reviews as a great study guide for the Praxis II. In reality, it only prepares you for the type of information on the Praxis I, and there is very little info on the Praxis II. Although I know the book is titled Praxis I and II, I was disappointed with the uneven coverage of BOTH tests. I would buy the books from ETS instead of this one, and I have and they are MUCH more helpful.

good book.......2007-10-05
good book, i pass ATSW in one try after i study this book, provide almost everything you need for the ATSW.
Comprehensive but readable.......2007-09-17
This book was required reading for a seminar. It is very easy to read, but it also contains a lot of good information. I was particularly taken with the Practitioner's Corner at the end of each chapter with suggestions for using the information provided within the chapter inside the classroom.
Excellent Work.......2007-02-22
This book is invaluable in its clarification of current brain research and its impact on learning. Excellent book for teachers.
Practical & Informative.......2006-02-07
The title of this book pretty much spells it out: Dr. Sousa explains how brains learn. Considering the subject, the text is very readable--enough to recommend this book to anyone who wants an understanding of how we are able to retain information. It covers the entire gamut, from the basics of biology to the subtler aspects of the active mind.
Still, this is really a book for educators. At the end of each chapter are a number of "Practitioner's Corners" where Dr. Sousa describes methods of applying this information in the classroom. Most of these are quite clever and very practical. This book should be on the reading list of all teachers, would-be teachers, and parents.
Educator-friendly.......2005-10-25
This book is an excellent resource for educators. It is easily adapted to classroom use no matter what level is being taught. Great insights to hemisphere preference, transfer, critical thinking, teaching strategies. Even the biology and physiology is palatable. This book would lend itself well as a resource for inservicing teachers with its many practioner's corner activities. I recently read Jensen's Teaching With the Brain in Mind and, while I found that book to be a good one, this book if FAR more useful. Every teacher will find easily adapted activities to put to immediate use. Highly recommended.
Book Description
The difficulties experienced by children with autism and related conditions in inferring the thoughts, beliefs, desires and intentions of others are well documented in numerous studies. It now seems that these deficits underlie many of the social and communication problems that are characteristic of autism. Teaching Children with Autism to Mind-Read explores the relationship of "theory of mind" deficits to other areas of children's functioning and describes existing experimental work that has attempted to enhance the skills associated with understanding others' minds.
Drawing on their own intervention programme, and providing detailed information about the teaching materials and strategies they use, the authors provide practical guidelines for helping children with autism spectrum conditions to improve their understanding of beliefs, emotions and pretence. The authors tackle specific problematic issues including:
- how to interpret facial expressions
- how to recognise feelings of anger, sadness, fear and happiness
- how feelings are affected by what happens and what is expected to happen
- how to see things from another person's perspective
- how to understand another person's knowledge and beliefs
This easy-to-follow graded teaching guide is of particular relevance to special needs teachers, educational and clinical psychologists, speech and language therapists, and carers of children with autism spectrum conditions.
Customer Reviews:
Can use illustrations beyond given exercises.......2007-07-24
This book has good simple illustrations that can be used for purposes above and beyond the 'situations'/emotions they represent. Parents and therapists can first ask the beginner child, 'What's happening' 'How did you know' 'What is he/she thinking' 'What could he/say?' 'What might happen next?' 'What is the problem?' 'Name 1, 2, 3 solutions' 'Where are they' 'What is he/she looking at?' 'Why is he/she sad/happy/mad/etc.?'
Essentially, the guide could be used for more than just identifying appropriate emotions and perspective taking. The situations are common and appropriate for young children/preschoolers, egs. afraid of dogs, the dark, injury, spiders; happy to get cake, toys, see a clown; sad if toy breaks, parent leaves; mad if playmate pushes, ruins toy, takes away possession.
It would have been nice if the guide had a clear normal/typical achievement age range for each level in the three categories of mental state teaching (emotion, belief, pretend play) ie, by what age a normal child would achieve each level of levels 1-5 in the three areas.
4 stars because my child is a preschooler, if older I would have wanted more sophisticated situations. Maybe the guide book could be developed for teaching children of different ages/experiences.
Autism.......2007-01-06
I would recommend this book to individuals who wish more information regarding children with autistic spectrum disorder. There are many issues discussed within the book and ideas to assist children in progressing successfully. I believe this book is geared more toward educators who really want to know, or toward parents and caregivers who want to help teachers learn more effective ways of dealing with autistic idiosyncrosies. Our 8 year old son's teacher have loved the information and found it helpful to meet the needs of many children in their classes, not just those of our son.
Great Book.......2001-08-12
I have applied the principles of "A.B.A." for approximately 10 years. I have worked with numerous families and children who have been afflicted with Autism. I also try to stay up to date on the newest techniques and reading materials. I found this book facsinating and have begun to apply many of these techniques with the children I am currently working with. I work with preschool and school aged children. When these principles are applied correctly I have seen amazing results. I have found this book extremely helpful and only wish I could have found it sooner.
Great part of a program for young children with autism.......2000-07-30
This book contains a great program for teaching young children with autism how to interpret facial expressions and other social cues. It is aimed at young children.
If you have a teenager with autism, you may need more help, since the typical teen's social environment is much more complex than that of a younger child. This of course begs the question of why anyone would wait until their child was a teenager to start addressing his/her autism. One should instead start as early as possible, preferably well before 3 years of age, and definitely before 5 years of age. The longer you wait, the more difficult it gets, and the less promising the prognosis.
Is this book the only resource you will need to address your child's autism? Most definitely not! You should read "Let Me Hear Your Voice" by Catherine Maurice, and you should find a parent support group near you (check www.feat.org for a list by region). ABA treatment is a must, and some children also benefit from changes in diet, megavitamin therapy, and other treatments. ABA (especially), diet, and vitamins helped several children in my community go from a diagnosis of autism to testing in the normal range. But they all started very aggressive treatment early: before the age of 4.
So, read this book, but also gather information in the area of ABA, diet, and vitamins. Find other parents who are aggressively addressing their child's autism--you will need the mutual support. Above all, hit your child's autism with everything you can as early as you possibly can! There is not yet a guaranteed cure, but you can give your child a fighting chance of attaining a normal level of functioning.
Good for mild autistic young kid.......2000-07-11
I am father of a mild autistic 4 years old kid. My son drops away a lot of autistic features now after diagnosis at 2 yrs old. He is OK for a lot of things. Now verbal at nearly same age, behaviour OK without any hyper or strange things, however, social and temper are the areas need to be improved. With the recommendation of his doctor, I bought this book here. The aim of the book is to teach the kid to know what is proper feeling with diffeerent environment or situations. The book gives me hints how to tell him what are expressions, how to react with strange things or environments,.. etc...
In particular that we live in Hong Kong, some illustrations and drawings are not appropriate to our urban city. ( e.g. what is your feeling when you see a snake in the grass ? ((( sorry we cannot see any snake in HK )) ) It is still OK with most of the situations given.
It is good for young mild autistic, I have shared my book with other families with same "problem" I am also a vice chaiman of an association of autistic kids parents in Hong Kong.
I am very appreciated that the publisher will send you another "book" of worksheets that you do not need to write on the orginal book. You can use that worksheets to teach your kid or class. the publisher gives you right to photocopy the worksheets as long as you entitled the original book! These worksheets sent to me or any buyer free of charge via airmail ( all free of charge when you request, and I got it after three weeks when I requested via email.. given by the book.
Worth a try but not cheap though. All autism books are expensive!
Book Description
In this profoundly significant book, author Michael Gurian synthesizes this current knowledge and clearly demonstrates how this distinction in hard-wiring and socialized gender differences affects how boys and girls learn. Gurian presents a new way to educate our children based on brain science, neurological development, and chemical and hormonal disparities.
Customer Reviews:
Thank you!.......2007-09-11
We need to stop worrying about offending people with talk of the differences of the genders and embrace what we are seeing and (what studies are showing). If we wonder why kids are having so much trouble we need to look at what we are doing to them and embrace the reality rather than deny the fact that we are wired differently. This is filled with critical information and ways to help our kids. I want to do the best for my son and daughter and I thank Michael Gurian for this book.
REFRESHING INFO.......2007-01-13
Raising our grandson now 10 years old is a challenge anyway but as a gifted child is even more demanding. The book information helps us undestand the heightened behavior displayed because he is a boy - an athletic and smart boy that at age 10 has a good handle on the real world.
Thanks for the book!
Return of the Native.......2006-08-14
I am an educator at a school that separates the genders beginning at the 4th grade level. I have always know instinctively that girls and boys learn differently, and I strongly believe after working at this school for over 3 years that it is the way education should be. Many years ago these kinds of schools were common, but for whatever reason we have gotten away from that structure. The book points out many important biological difference that explains a lot to me about why both genders act the way they do in the classroom.
I would highly recommend this book to any educator who is interested in tapping into the potential that each gender has to offer, or even to answer the age old question of why men and women are so different! I would also recommend "Why Gender Matters" by Sax. It is just as enlightening!
A teacher's review.......2006-07-28
I found 'Boys and Girls Learn Differently" to be a useful and fascinating introduction to the general strengths and weaknesses of males and females in the classroom.
Some reviewers may laugh or poke fun at the relatively old ideas that he is presenting as new in the areas of male/female brain differences. These may be old ideas in the biology lab, but someone needs to walk over to the schools of education across the country because the 'tabla rasa' theory (the mind is a blank slate and gender differences are entirely a product of culture, not nature) is alive and still kicking hard.
The only complaint I have is that Gurian refers a lot to seminars and ongoing experiments in school designs that will be helpful in teaching to the strengths and weaknesses of girls and boys. However, he comes up a bit short in providing concrete examples of how to help both boys and girls.
The danger from within is Gurian .......2005-01-15
Many of my friends and I have read the same book.We come to the same conclusion of this book having an agenda to dogmatize our
country with meaningless gender bias.In my opinion there is nothing more dangerous to a country and the world as to limit
our children's ability to wether the child is male or female.
Gurian does not offer any proof as others have stated in the
reviews as to how these differences come about. He says it's the
hormones, the brain structure.I have read other matierial which has disclosed findings which condradict his so called research.
If he were correct in assuming hormones then I would be much more drenched with testostrone than my half brother since I excell at math and he at lanuage.Brain structure varies from person to person, something I doubt he would like you to know.
Instill independence and individuality in all your children
by seeing them as people rather than sexes.
I cannot think of anything worse than leading your child down the wrong "learning style" road, simply because of their sex.
People tend to want to agree with anything they read and be
a good follower. It's better to think for yourself and be a
good leader and helper in your child's life by giving them room to grow the way they want to and without trying to controll
their interests or believing they will only show talent in small sterotyped boxes.Terrible book written by someone
who is trying to distort your child's life to make $$$$$$.
Customer Reviews:
A little skeptical .......2007-07-16
I almost put this book in my shopping cart but I decided to read the reviews first. What I find odd is that ALL but 1 of the reviewers is "A READER" and each of these review entries lacks a designation of a state or any other identifiers. Now, I am having second thoughts because it seems the ratings might have been inflated by the author or other affiliates. Not good.
Energize your teaching style!.......2002-04-28
This book is full of exciting ideas to help pep up your classroom and teaching style!:) I found so many ways to make learning meaningful to all my students. It is a great book for new teachers as well as seasoned teachers who are looking for ways to help motivate all types of students (as well as yourself). Even though I have read the book through once I still find new things to try each time I flip through the pages. This would be a great graduation gift for a new teacher!:)
"A Must-Have Book".......1999-11-30
Motivation and Learning is one of the very best books we have ever put in the hands of teachers! The strategies are useful for any classroom, but specifically useful to teachers who develop lessons under a block schedule!
This book should be must reading for the new teacher........1998-12-22
"Motivation and Learning" is loaded with motivational strategies and tips that work for all grade levels. Spence Roger's research based strategies and tips not only make teaching easier through increased motivation but also increases student achievement. This book should be must reading for the new teacher as well as the seasoned veteran. Try "Class Commitments", "Carousel Graffiti", "Vanity Plates", and "Quality Assignmrnts". These are a few of the strategies that I have used from this book at the beginning of the school year. The difference in the quality of student work was obvious. Having taught for thirty years, I thought I knew it all. This book has raised student achievement to a new level in my classes. Hats off to Spence Rogers for hitting the nail on the head with "Motivation and Learning".
one of the books I keep only an arm's length away!.......1998-12-18
This book offers a plethora of strategies and tips on increasing motivation and quality. Ideas are applicable to students Pre-K to adult. An outstanding resource--one that we provide each new teacher with!
Book Description
In this lively book, Carolyn Mamchur provides a practical explanation of cognitive type theory and learning style that will help teachers meet the needs of others while also discovering their own strengths as teachers and colleagues.
In Part I, Mamchur introduces the theory of psychological type preferences developed by Carl Jung and discusses the importance of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator in identifying people's preferences for extraversion, introversion, sensing, intuition, thinking, feeling, judging, and perceiving. By looking at the eight preferences in the context of teaching and learning, she makes it easy for teachers to apply the theory in their own classrooms. A case sutdy accompanying the explanation of each preference shows how that preference typically influences classroom practice.
Part II takes a more intimate look at issues arising from the study and use of type theory, including the dangers of labeling. And the Appendix includes both a glossary and OPTIONS, an instrument for determining type preferences in adolescents.
Mamchur approaches her subject with humor, skill, and honesty. For teachers who want to better understand their students and their colleagues, this book is essential reading.

MBTI and more.......2000-09-14
This book has an interesting combination of the MBTI learning theory(N) and the author's practical experience (S). The "highlighted(T)/quick start parts"(SJ) are from the MBTI. The personal application sections are the authors personal experience(F) are for the most part true to the MBTI theory. It is nice to have practical experiences included(SJ) and it keeps one shifting learning style in the middle of a chapter. However, she does try and cover both the theory(N) and practical (S) and the facts(T) and human feeling(F) side of learning style. She does a nice job of making the Thinkers(T) relate to the Feelers(F) and iNtutive(N) with the Sensors(S) and handled the (SP) nicely. But as a Thinker(T), the amount of Feeling(F) was almost too much, but may be fine for a stronger (F) than me. Have already sent as a gift for a new teacher. Nice organization(J), nice instruments to evaluate. Good and practical (SJ). Quick read. Nice general knowledge. Background in MBTI is helpful but not necessary.

not as good as expected.......2007-01-27
I love brain research and how children learn best. This book had some good information, but was disappointing in the practical application. The ideas were nothing new and nothing those teaching for a few years wouldn't already know.
