2 out of 5 stars overpriced textbook.......2007-09-18

The paper of this book is of mediocre quality. I splashed some water on a corner of a page and wiped it immediately; yet the page shriveled and the print faded nearly to illegibility.

The content itself is reasonably organized, but doesn't break any new ground.

5 out of 5 stars Classroom Management for Middle and High School Teachers (7th Edition).......2007-06-11

I found this book to help a lot in preparing a behavior management plan. This was an area I felt school was weak in my studies at Georgia State. State has a great program, but this was an area I needed more help at. This book is filled with great examples of how other teachers have handled problem situations. Was worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars Great.......2007-01-10

This book contains a lot of information that is particularly useful for new teachers. It also provides useful examples of how to best set up and maintain your classroom and students. Great book.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for all entry level teachers.......2007-01-03

This book is written in a common sense manner. The authors take the reader from the planning stage to implementing then they show you how to maintain management in the classroom so that the teacher will have a successful year. The authors also included nice case studies and checklists to better prepare you for the upcoming school year. I definitely recommend this book to all teachers or education majors.

5 out of 5 stars Nice tool for new teachers........2006-03-28

This book is a practical resource for new secondary teachers. The authors discuss classroom set-up, student resources, and behavior problems. There are many ideas ready for application in your own classroom and no boring or unnecessary narratives that most classroom management books have.

4 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Classroom Management.......2006-02-26

I had to buy and read this book for a classroom management class. It is a great book for comparing the most recent research available. However, you usually need to read five to ten pages of what could have been stated in a paragraph. I do feel that I really understand the material by the time I finish reading the book. I have also used many of the ideas in my classroom to try and improve my classroom management in my student teaching experience.

1 out of 5 stars required class reading.......2005-02-22

I was required to purchase this book for a class I am currently taking. While the content of the book could be useful, the manner in which it is written is laden with ridiculous run-on ideas that could be communicated much more clearly. Here is an example from page 28:

"Regardless of the extent to which teachers decide to adapt to the norms and parenting styles of their student's culture or systematically assists students in learning to adapt while maintaining their cultural values, the point is that as educators we are willing to examine our own beliefs and way of working with students in light of the contextual variables existing in the classroom, school and community."

To students who may be required to read this text: Good luck. Perhaps you can change classes before it is too late.

To professors who may add this book to their required reading list: Please, please, please pass on this text and choose something more relevant and tangible for your students.

To educators who may choose this book to answer questions or add to their professional library: choose something else. This book is useless. My advice is your time will be better spent going to talk to teachers who have been in the field rather than reading this book.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Foundations of Business Coaching.......2007-02-12

This book is an excellent expose of one of the primary sources, and the development of principles and techniques of business coaching from that starting point. He refers frequently to the work of Tim Gallwey and his inner game books. I was familiar with Gallwey's work, and appreciated the excellent organization, content and style of the book.

I found the book also to be of significant value to anyone who wishes to contribute to other people's success, be it in family, social, or other relationships. Parents should find the content valuable in moving from the control stage of parenting to the empowering stage of parenting.

4 out of 5 stars Valuable coaching classic.......2007-01-10

Whitmore has provided a very good secular overview and guide to coaching in Coaching for Performance (I am a Christian coach). It is easy to read and gives lots of examples of using coaching technique in everyday life and work. It appeals to me as a classic as Whitmore came in at the early days of coaching and writes with clarity and enthusiasm. In this edition outlines its development. I purchased this book as it was often quoted in the Life Caoching couse I studied as part of a theology degree.

As someone with a sporting background I find his many references to sports coaching quite natural, however I can see this as an irritation to anyone who has never experienced coaching in the sporting arena. These references however do add to the readers' understanding of coaching technique and practice. I would recommend this book to anyone new to coaching, but would suggest further study and supervised practice if you want to do more than simply use a few coaching techniques in your worlplace and everyday life.

4 out of 5 stars Good all round resource.......2007-01-10

I found this book very good as it gives a good general background to coaching as well as an introduction to coaching in the corporate environment. There were some parts that I did not agree with as I felt they contradicted the basic coaching principle of always working in clients agenda, but, that said, it is a good overall resource.

4 out of 5 stars Really Excellent Book for Coaching Introduction.......2006-11-07

If you are new to the coaching topic, this book helps give you a general understanding to coaching using the GROW model. Very helpful!

4 out of 5 stars great original book on coaching - still work a read!.......2006-03-18

This book was outstanding when it first came out - and it has truly stood the test of time. Sir John provides a welcome breath of reach air from the often all too frequent US-based and over-hyped coaching genre. Along with Thomas Lenard, Sir John Whitmore is one of the real pioneers of life coaching and workplace coaching. A great book.

Find Me: How Psychic Detectives from Around the World Have Banded Together to Find Missing People

I teach spiritual development classes and i use ths book for some of the beginnings of classes and workshops, to help people get to know each other. It has lots of great exercises.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2006-07-26

I work in a school and this book has already helped me plan several fun activities for teachers, directors, and students. I highly recommend it!

4 out of 5 stars Well written and has good variety........2006-07-14

While many of the activities might suit a business, I was able to find quite a few for small groups in our church. The instructions are thorough and handouts are well done. My only suggestion for the publisher would be to make the book so the pages could be torn out and put in a three ring binder.

5 out of 5 stars Great for Residence Life staff.......2000-07-03

There are few books on icebreakers/teambuilders that I've found to be useful with college students ( I work in Student Affairs). This book, however, offered many activities that were useful not only for just 'breaking the ice' but also for applying them to the many educational workshops we do in this field. There was also a very helpful section called "Icebreakers for the Non-Icebreaker types" that was both interesting and practical. Because I work with such a diverse range of students, I struggle to find icebreakers that are not geared solely to the extroverted-types. This collection gives a number of activities that are beneficial to teambuilding while respecting the different learning/interaction styles we see in our students. Out of the 201 offered in the book, I have found at least 180 of them that I will use as integral parts of the next staff training. This book also offers activities for groups ranging from 8 participants (good for small staffs) to 400 participants (good for all-hall activities)!

3 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2000-06-29

It was disappointing to find so few ideas for a group of 100 business people who don't know each other. Most of the activities are far too personal for such a group, involving sharing personal information or touching. In addition, many of the activities have no "closure": they simply end, leaving us to wonder, what was the purpose of THAT? Many of the activities would be fine for very informal gatherings where being silly (marching in a parade, charades, making a human octopus) and getting personal are appropriate. But business people--even my lighthearted group--expect some degree of professionalism and purpose associated with such activities.

I already used it with young people. And it's easy to use, has nice games, and I like the debriefing questions.

What I was looking for.

A very valuable resource. It teaches while keeping people in a very good mood.

5 out of 5 stars Well worth the money.......2006-02-19

I especially like the section on Assertiveness which teaches assertiveness without fear and the section on Working with Difficult peers in the workplace. Very appropriate and hard hitting.

3 out of 5 stars Humorous Training Games.......2005-08-18

These games are helpful but not as "quality" as most trainers seek. Good for a springboard but not enough meat.

4 out of 5 stars The Big Book of Humorous Training Games.......2005-07-21

This is a good book in where the humor combined with the training technics help the consultant work many curriculums more easy and with more effectiveness.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars First steps to the world of management.......2006-02-28

I work for a book summary company. One of the books selected for summary is this book.

Author Morey Stettner handles a relatively new subject of initiating those who have ascended the Managerial throne. While there are many management books that outlines theories and principles by the dozens, inducting new managers into the process for acquiring Managerial proficiency through practical steps will indeed be of great help to `upstarts' and `novice'. What makes this book valuable is that it covers some of the most crucial areas of managerial effectiveness, viz., speaking listening, responding and disciplining. Using illustrative examples the author guides us through the basic managerial elements that one can immediately identify with and implement. The book rings true more so for the insightful approach to the topics and the clarity with which the points are espoused. You would be motivated to apply the various steps outlined as you will find them highly realistic and feasible to adopt. This is where the book rules high I feel. For those executives `waiting in the wings' or `wannabes' or even Management students, this book should really be a boon to read and execute. Indeed this book is like a blueprint for ushering us through the first steps into the world of management. Even top managers who are ever willing to learn can draw useful lessons and widen their horizon of knowledge. No doubt it is a useful book for any reader laying his/her hands on it.

5 out of 5 stars A great book any manager.......2005-08-25

This is a must have book for any one just promoted to a manager or even an effective team member who wishes to go to managerial or people management jobs. This book can also be a good resource for those who are managers for long time but never had good mentor or training.

5 out of 5 stars Packed With Knowledge!.......2001-03-30

Most of us developed our management skills, or lack thereof, in the same way: through trial and error. But Morey Stettner's new book will give anyone freshly promoted to the ranks of management a valuable head start by spelling out practical steps that new managers can take to be effective. For all of you old-timers, reading this book will induce a near constant mental stream of "I wish someone had told me that when I was starting out." For example, Stettner's first step, writing out a basic plan of how you want to manage your subordinates, might at first seem a bit naïve to veterans. But consider this point: How much time did you spend thinking about the techniques you would use in managing people before taking over your first managerial assignment? The probable answer is not much. In a clear voice laced with illustrative examples, Stettner covers the critical skills managers rely on every day: speaking, listening, criticizing and disciplining. For his insightful treatment of these topics, we [...] recommend this book to managers new and old, employees and students of management - But then again, aren't we all?

4 out of 5 stars Very Complete....Almost.......2000-07-14

This book is well written and nearly perfect for those transitioning to a management position with little time to spare. I found it to be well organized and concise, highlighting good common sense principles to remember when you take the helm of your new position. It addresses many of the common stereotypes and pitfalls new and experienced managers encounter. The book does fall short of one of the back covers claims about hiring. Nowhere within it's pages does it discuss hiring strategies or interviewing skills. This was disappointing and a critical piece missed by the author.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars For beginners.......2007-05-12

I purchased this book for a class (legal technology) which turned out to be as remedial as this book. While I believe it could be very useful for someone who is not used to navigating a computer, it really insults the intelligence of those of us who have grown up with technology. This book does have a few useful tips that clarify certain aspects of Concordance and other legal programs, but I find it easier to explore an unfamiliar program on my own without the tedious step-by-step process Roper uses in his lessons.

2 out of 5 stars Informative, but............2006-11-07

I purchaed this book for a Paralegal class. I had two very bad experiences with the book. First, the first copy I received had no Appendix in it, so I had to send it back. It was unfortunate, as I needed the Appendix to do an assignment. Secondly, the software that was provided was expired when I tried to load it into my laptop to do homework. I called the publishing company and they promised to send me a new disk; two weeks later and I still have not received it.
I will keep it as a reference source, but I hope that another book will be written for future students. If you do not need it for a class, PLEASE look for another book.

5 out of 5 stars Great learning tool.......2005-03-24

I bought this book for a legal assistant class and I enjoyed it. I learned a lot. It's hard to learn computers from a book - but not this one. The book comes with software and has tutorials and exercises that accompany the software. My class also liked the fact that there are tons of practical applications for how computers are actually used by practicing paralegals and legal secretaries in the book. Also, when it comes to litigation support - one of the most difficult legal computer applications to master - it was fantastic. It comes with three different litigation support programs, including Summation. Summation is fairly involved to learn and the book, tutorials, exercises and software did a good job of teaching this to me. I am confident now in my ability to do basic litigation support. The chapter on using the Internet to do legal and factual research was also excellent.

4 out of 5 stars I would definately buy this again!.......2005-03-18

This book is essential for anyone working in a law office. Computers are used in nearly every aspect of working in a law firm. The book is huge - nearly 700 pages - and it covers every main type of program used in a law office. It comes with software, and lots of exercises and I thought it was very easy to read and straight forward. It covers hard topics like litigation support and Access databases in a way that I could understand without totally going over my head. The book covers both entry level and advanced topics. For example in the word processing chapter the Word tutorial had 7 lessons that got progressively more difficult, starting with basic word processing and ending with mail merges and creating tables of authorities.

5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended.......2005-03-14

I think this is a fabulous book. It comes with demonstration versions of 5 legal software programs including three litigation support programs, a time and billing program and a case management program. There were a number of in-depth, hands-on exercises for each program, so I really got to learn about each type of program by using it. Also, although I have used Access, Word, Excel and Powerpoint before, I liked the fact that there were in-depth exercises for learning legal applications for each of these programs. This is a very practical book.

    Book Description

“This is a well-written book. Quite simple and precise . . . The authors should be commended. This book deals with leadership from a very contemporary perspective that reflects the importance of multiculturalism.”
–Guo-Ming Chen, University of Rhode Island

No matter how culturally different the person or group, there will be common-ground similarities and no matter how similar the person or group, there will be significant differences. Culture influences our thoughts, words, and actions in ways that are often unrecognized, leading to misunderstandings. Each misunderstanding can become very expensive, both in terms of missed opportunities and less effective business outcomes.  Leadership in a Diverse and Multicultural Environment provides leaders with the tools necessary to effectively interact with all individuals.

Although much of the research related to multiculturalism has focused on expatriates and international assignments, Leadership in a Diverse and Multicultural Environment also focuses on leaders in domestic organizations, as they can benefit from developing their own multicultural awareness, knowledge, and skills. Effective leaders can shape the culture of their organization to be accepting of individuals from all races, ethnicities, religions, and genders with a minimum of misunderstandings.

Leadership in a Diverse and Multicultural Environment
is well grounded in solid research, but written in an easy-to-comprehend style that:

Leadership in a Diverse and Multicultural Environment is an ideal supplemental text for undergraduate- or graduate-level international management, leadership, or diversity-related courses taught in the business curriculum.  It could also be used in leadership courses taught in education and communication departments.

4 out of 5 stars Practical guide to eLearning.......2007-01-15

I purchased this book as I was beginning to design an eLearning curriculum for my company. The book was a great jumpstart to helping me structure the program, consider ways to involve the learners in eLearning, and remember to find ways to make the course material memorable. I found the accompanying online and CD-based demos to be good stimulators, too. Although I won't be using an authoring tool like the one Michael Allen invented, it was easy to take and apply several of Allen's ideas to my project.

5 out of 5 stars Emphasizing the essentials.......2003-11-28

This book takes e-learning to its core mandate, that of engaging and involving the learners, so that they learn the key skills and knowledge required.

An excellent and easy read, with lots of good examples and non-examples, nicely compared side by side.

5 out of 5 stars Must have for new designers.......2003-05-01

This book is a must have for the aspiring e-Learning developer. It reviews enough theory to make the point and directs the reader quickly through the logic and science of good e-Learning design.

5 out of 5 stars This book directly applies to your work!.......2003-03-04

Dr. Allen is a champion of learner-centric design - and has written a refreshingly reader-centric book about the topic. He understands that learning is an "internal, personal, and ultimately individual act." His words reveal his passions and opinions in such an authentic manner that you can quickly understand his perspective, and extract points of meaning that can directly apply to your work. As a producer and designer of interactive media, I continually find his insights an inspiration.

5 out of 5 stars Guidance from the Master.......2003-01-28

This book is subtitled, "Building Interactive, Fun and Effective Learning Programs for Any Company" and I think that says it all. I've spoken on the topic of where's the fun in eLearning and know that most of what I've seen is "deadly boring."

I have known Mike Allen since I worked for Authorware in the 1980's. One of the things I always regretted was not working in the MN office, as he, along with the rest of the Authorware team, conducted critiques of the work in progress being developed for customers. The few I did attend were always insightful and thought provoking. Along with being pretty scary if your work was on the agenda, because you might have to listen to bad along with good feedback. Mike Allen is a kind person, but not one to mince words when it comes to what makes up good and bad eLearning. I've also had the opportunity to attend several lectures by Mike on eLearning.

This book shares his insight on what makes good elearning, particularly from the viewpoints of motivation and interactivity. I am starting a new project with a lot of possible impact and reading his book has helped me immensely. Also, it contains several little history lessons on eLearning and Authorware that I really enjoyed. Lots of examples of good projects are discussed and included on a CD-ROM that unfortunately is not included in the book, but available for free from his website. If you are really interested in learning more on what makes good eLearning, I would definitely order it soon.

    2 out of 5 stars For Beginners..........2007-03-08

...and not really suitable for experienced Work-Shop leaders. I tried this book to get a sense of the quality of the books in this series. Personally I consider this book as too basic, and I must say that the quality of the provided material, such as for instance the slides, is not the standard I would expect. I would recommend this book for not so experienced trainers or people that would want to run an inhouse workshop for their own team.

5 out of 5 stars easy to follow.......2005-04-26

I think the CD included with this book is a marvelous tool for the facilitator. The powerpoint and overhead slide presentations on the CD give you training programs for two days, one day, half day or one hour. The book itself walks you through step by step on how to design an effective training program. This is simple enough to follow for even the novice trainer, yet it is comprehensive enough to meet a seasoned trainers needs. I plan on incorporating many of the learning activities in our training program.
