CLA Review Manual: A Practical Guide to CLA Exam Preparation.......2007-05-22
Good and comprehensive. I have no problem with the substantive value, however, the finish of the pages was raged and not trimmed properly. One part was extended way beyond the cover. Is this because Amazon gives a discount? Not something I appreciate in a book I will keep in my library for life. The prior issue was a better-quality product.
A great review manual and reference book.......2000-06-07
This book was my primary source when I was preparing for the CLA exam. Coherent, organized and thoughtful, it is a "must buy" for CLA candidates. Until my book was borrowed (and not returned) by another legal assistant, the manual served as a handy reference manual in my practice.

The book is a perfect solution for administrative assistants mainly.
Do not hesitate to buy this product
Good Reminder Handbook.......2007-10-19
This book was a good reminder of some things I learned, and it's good for those who want to learn more about administrative duties.
Administrative Assistant's and Secretary's Handbook (Second Edition).......2007-06-24
This book is spectacular. It is up to date on everything. It defined exactly what my role will be in a job, the methods of being a savvy assistant and the explanations of duties is detailed and easy to follow. I have vowed to have this book in my desk at every assignment I work at.
It's like the Administrative Assistant's Bible!
Administrative Assistant & Secretary Handbook.......2007-05-28
Overall not bad. I ordered the book because I discovered general clerical tasks such as envelope & letter formats, answering phones, taking messages were not common knowledge to highschool graduates. This book gave our receptionist who had no office/clerical training good guidlines to follow. The computer section is outdated.
Administrative Assistant's and Secretary's Handbook.......2007-01-09
We (group of secretary's)work in a school and let me tell you that this book has helped us to understand the importance of an assistant. How we are the leading role of our bosses, we need to be well informed about everything around us and our bosses so that business can run smoothly and not look bad when someone ask something and not have the correct answer. The book has become our inseparable partner, it helps us in everything we do.

Customer Reviews:
For beginners.......2007-05-12
I purchased this book for a class (legal technology) which turned out to be as remedial as this book. While I believe it could be very useful for someone who is not used to navigating a computer, it really insults the intelligence of those of us who have grown up with technology. This book does have a few useful tips that clarify certain aspects of Concordance and other legal programs, but I find it easier to explore an unfamiliar program on my own without the tedious step-by-step process Roper uses in his lessons.
Informative, but............2006-11-07
I purchaed this book for a Paralegal class. I had two very bad experiences with the book. First, the first copy I received had no Appendix in it, so I had to send it back. It was unfortunate, as I needed the Appendix to do an assignment. Secondly, the software that was provided was expired when I tried to load it into my laptop to do homework. I called the publishing company and they promised to send me a new disk; two weeks later and I still have not received it.
I will keep it as a reference source, but I hope that another book will be written for future students. If you do not need it for a class, PLEASE look for another book.
Great learning tool.......2005-03-24
I bought this book for a legal assistant class and I enjoyed it. I learned a lot. It's hard to learn computers from a book - but not this one. The book comes with software and has tutorials and exercises that accompany the software. My class also liked the fact that there are tons of practical applications for how computers are actually used by practicing paralegals and legal secretaries in the book. Also, when it comes to litigation support - one of the most difficult legal computer applications to master - it was fantastic. It comes with three different litigation support programs, including Summation. Summation is fairly involved to learn and the book, tutorials, exercises and software did a good job of teaching this to me. I am confident now in my ability to do basic litigation support. The chapter on using the Internet to do legal and factual research was also excellent.
I would definately buy this again!.......2005-03-18
This book is essential for anyone working in a law office. Computers are used in nearly every aspect of working in a law firm. The book is huge - nearly 700 pages - and it covers every main type of program used in a law office. It comes with software, and lots of exercises and I thought it was very easy to read and straight forward. It covers hard topics like litigation support and Access databases in a way that I could understand without totally going over my head. The book covers both entry level and advanced topics. For example in the word processing chapter the Word tutorial had 7 lessons that got progressively more difficult, starting with basic word processing and ending with mail merges and creating tables of authorities.
Highly Recommended.......2005-03-14
I think this is a fabulous book. It comes with demonstration versions of 5 legal software programs including three litigation support programs, a time and billing program and a case management program. There were a number of in-depth, hands-on exercises for each program, so I really got to learn about each type of program by using it. Also, although I have used Access, Word, Excel and Powerpoint before, I liked the fact that there were in-depth exercises for learning legal applications for each of these programs. This is a very practical book.
Book Description
This book is designed to serve as a quick reference guide for working legal assistants, as a textbook for paralegal programs and to assist legal assistants in preparing for the Certified Legal Assistant examination. Experienced legal assistants and attorneys prepared this manual. It is a collection of proven techniques and procedures used by legal assistants nationwide. The techniques described are examples of past successful solutions to actual assignments accomplished by working legal assistants. They may be used as starting points from which legal assistants may make changes, adaptations, and modifications in similar situations.
Customer Reviews:
legal review .......2007-09-21
The book's last publication was 1992...it's soooo far behind the times as far as the technology part is concerned. She did not even mention Legal Software that a lot of lawyers use now-a-days...called PRO DOC. SO it's a sort of good reference book if you overlook the date of it and it also being behind the times.
This book is great for LA's learning the ropes........2006-08-26
I really love this book. I've been a Legal Assistant for only 2 years and I find that this book gives a clear understanding as to the how and why legal documents are prepared. Especially when preparing documents with 3rd party defendents/plaintiffs and also headings for Infant Compromise cases. I've added it to my Legal Reference Library and sit's on my desk with my CPLR. I'm currently in school working on my associates degree in Paralegal Studies and at the ripe "young" age of 48...I think I've found my niche.
What a Great Helpful Book.......2005-08-27
This book is so wonderful and helpful. I just started working in a law firm doing litigation and I knew nothing. This was a total foreign language to me. The book is laid out so easy to read and is so interesting it keeps your attention. I highly recommend this book to everybody. Even just to keep as a reference book. It is very helpful. I hope one day they make a Strictly New York book.
reply to: Not completely satisfied but a good reference.......2004-08-24
... the reason it wouldn't show specific court documents is because each state has VERY different rules for how documents must be presented. Your local legal secretaries association should have a more explicit reference guide showing exactly how pleadings, etc. should look for your state. I think you're missing the point of the book if you're expecting that kind of information.
Very Good Beginner or Refresher Source.......2004-01-19
This comprehensive guide to the legal office offers much to those who are just starting their careers as legal secretaries or for those who have been away from the field for a few years and need a refresher. In addition, secretaries in general law offices may find the specialty sections helpful when preparing documents for unusual situations. The information is more current than not and is clearly presented, including short glossaries of Latin and English legal terms. However, Ms. DeVries omitted criminal law practice from her areas of specialty section and neglected to discuss the various legal-specific software programs available.
Recommended as a general source.
Book Description
This new title provides nurses with specific, practical advice on documenting a wide range of situations -- from caring for a patient with a myocardial infarction to witnessing a patient sign his will. In clear, concise language, the book gives detailed explanations of how, what, and when to document in nearly 100 of the most common, most important situations nurses face in practice. Each entry tells exactly what to consider and what to document so that the nurse can ensure quality patient care, continuity of care, and legal protection for the nurse and the institution.

Surefire Documentation.......2005-09-25
Found this to be very helpful and insightful. Would highly recomend for staff education.
"Surefire Documentation" Review.......2000-09-01
This is a wonderful book. It was given to me to review by one of the charge nurses where I work--a long term care facility in a small town in Iowa. This text not only gives very good instruction on documentation, it is organized well. Each cover includes a quick reference guide to assist with finding specific areas of concern. It is well written and includes text boxes with more specifics and concrete examples. I have recommended it to my Director of Nursing Services as a resource that could be used in the other 2 nursing facilities in the corporation. An excellent reference text with easy to find entries! I would highly recommend it to anyone who wants a ready reference.

Merriam-Webster's Secretarial Handbook (Third Edition.......2007-01-11
this is a great book i used this book at home and in my office.
Excellent Office Reference.......2006-08-08
If you need to know the correct format for an office document or the correct way to address an official, it is in this book. This book covers the traditional means of communication as well as the electronic arena. It is well organized and very easy to use.
Excellent desktop reference for secretaries and assistants.......2005-11-13
A superb one-stop reference volume covering topics highly relevant to the duties of secretaries and personal/admininstrative assistants, this handbook has withstood the test of time. The third edition dates from the early 1990s, but most of the many tasks treated comprehensively in this handbook have changed very little over the years: forms of address, basic grammar and punctuation rules, formal business correspondence, organization of meetings and travel, postal mail procedures, telephone etiquette and procedures, and so on. A few chapters that are very technology-sensitive (computers and word-processing equipment, desktop publishing, etc.) have dated considerably, but the handbook overall is so useful that it's worth having within arm's reach in just about any office-for both secretaries and their managers.
In an increasingly global business environment, this handbook is also very useful for assistants and secretaries outside the U.K. and U.S. who must deal with English-speaking colleagues on a regular basis by phone, e-mail, or mail.
I bought it flowers for Secretaries Day !!.......2003-06-26
We are a small firm, and I am a licensed professional who types his own correspondence, contracts for clients, transmittals, etc.. Because the styles and forms of business letters have changed since I was in college, I decided I needed a good reference to help me with the tricky stuff that comes along occassionally.
This book did the job. Whether I need to know how to address a letter to an elected official, or pressure someone to pay an invoice, the Secretarial Handbook covers it. From punctuation to collation, this is the best single office reference I have ever used.
If you do your own administrative tasks, buy one for yourself for National Secretaries (Administrative Professionals) Day.
