Book Description

Identify, mitigate, and respond to network attacks

Achieving maximum network security is a challenge for most organizations. Cisco® ASA, a new unified security device that combines firewall, network antivirus, intrusion prevention, and virtual private network (VPN) capabilities, provides proactive threat defense that stops attacks before they spread through the network.

This new family of adaptive security appliances also controls network activity and application traffic and delivers flexible VPN connectivity. The result is a powerful multifunction network security device that provides the security breadth and depth for protecting your entire network, while reducing the high deployment and operations costs and complexities associated with managing multiple point products.

Cisco ASA: All-in-One Firewall, IPS, and VPN Adaptive Security Appliance is a practitioner’s guide to planning, deploying, and troubleshooting a comprehensive security plan with Cisco ASA. The book provides valuable insight and deployment examples and demonstrates how adaptive identification and mitigation services on Cisco ASA provide a sophisticated security solution for both large and small network environments.

The book contains many useful sample configurations, proven design scenarios, and discussions of debugs that help you understand how to get the most out of Cisco ASA in your own network.

“I have found this book really highlights the practical aspects needed for building real-world security. It offers the insider’s guidance needed to plan, implement, configure, and troubleshoot the Cisco ASA in customer environments and demonstrates the potential and power of Self-Defending Networks.”

–Jayshree Ullal, Sr. Vice President, Security Technologies Group, Cisco Systems®

This security book is part of the Cisco Press® Networking Technology Series. Security titles from Cisco Press help networking professionals secure critical data and resources, prevent and mitigate network attacks, and build end-to-end self-defending networks.

5 out of 5 stars Very Helpful.......2007-07-03

Excellent reference book. I wouldn't want to curl up with a cup of hot cocoa and read it from beginning to end, but it was an essential tool in a recent firewall migration at my workplace. It also seems to be just about the only book about the relatively new asa platform.

4 out of 5 stars Great book........2007-05-08

This book has been very helpful for me. The only issue that I ran into was that the VPN section was a little outdated.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2006-11-03

This manual was excellent! Definitely something to keep at your desk as a reference.

5 out of 5 stars Good reference.......2006-01-27

This book helped me a lot. I recently deployed over 250 ASAs and was running into a lot of problems with the IPS SSM and VPN features. I got most of my answers from this book.

1 out of 5 stars Very Amatuer.......2006-01-19

What a waste of time it was reading this book. If you are not very familiar with FW/IPS or VPN then this may be helpful, but if you have been working with this technology and Cisco's products that address these technologies (ASA, PIX, IPS, VPN3k) then please don't refer to this joke. Go online to cisco.com and do the research. Sometimes it felt as if whitepapers were copied and pasted.

Very dissapointed.

Book Description

A thorough revision to the Visual Studio 2005 All-In-One Desk Reference For Dummies makes this the ideal book for new programmers or Java programmers looking to get up and running with Visual Studio. The book will be a comprehensive, value-priced reference for the entire Visual Studio 2005.  Microsoft’s catch-phrase for Visual Studio 2005 is personal productivity. The goal of personal productivity is to allow the developer to work at a higher level of abstraction. The goal of this book is to show the reader how to build applications using these productivity features of VS. As a result, language syntax and programming constructs are de-emphasized in favor of showing the user how to let VS generate the code.

This book takes a layered approach similar to how most applications are architected. When developing a new application, developers often divide up the work for the user interface, service layer (data access), and domain classes (coding). Whether there is one developer playing all three roles, or three developers doing each, this approach allows the reader to easily reference the layer they are constructing. Minibooks include:

Book I: Visual Studio 2005 Overview.

Book II: Getting Started with Visual Studio.

Book III: Building Applications with Visual Studio 2005.

Book IV: Getting Acquainted with Data Access.

Book V: Coding.

Book VI: Going the Extra Mile.

Book VII: Extending the Family.

3 out of 5 stars easy to learn, but with mistakes........2007-10-24

Helps you to know some of the visual studio, if you want to do a project, this book will not help. it has only an introduction for each part of the studio.

2 out of 5 stars lots of rubbish.......2007-10-01

This book is big and full of rubbish. The examples are not useful and you have to read lots of pages to get a little bit of explanation which it could have been done with few lines. I would not recommended to anybody

5 out of 5 stars Very good book for anyone wanting to learn VS 2005.......2007-02-23

This book gets to the point without speaking in another language so it's easy to understand. Even for the complete beginner or advanced user. It has great referrences and is easy to navigate. A must for your bookshelf.

5 out of 5 stars Great value.......2007-01-18

Well written and packed with useful info. I'm a Delphi programmer (trying to learn C# using VS) and this is my first VS 2005 book. You get a lot for your money with this book and the author's writing style is clear, concise and often entertaining. I highly recommend it.

3 out of 5 stars Beginners book.......2006-02-24

This book is really good if you absolutely don't know anything. It doesn't really tell you how to use the software beyond simple one page websites, which really doesn't help if you are trying to do something more involved. The data disk does however have some good software trail versions on it.

5 out of 5 stars Above and Beyond.......2004-05-04

Get this book, read it, and Boom! You're up to speed on website design and implementation.

Unlike many "For Dummies" books, Creating Web Pages is an in-depth look at the entire process, which begins at the entry level and quickly advances. The book claims to be 9 books in 1, and although 8 of these so-called books are not complete books in themselves, the information provided is detailed enough to allow a thorough analysis of several web creation programs, and includes a CD which provides a good look at: HTML, Frontpage, Dreamweaver, JavaScript, Flash MX, E-Commerce, and XML.

Wild Bill recommends this book for any beginner to intermediate level web creator out there. Don't be fooled by the for dummies format. This book is over 700 pages long and includes a usuable (for once) CD.

4 out of 5 stars Great, as long as you know a little bit before hand.......2002-01-27

This is a great book. I love it. But there is one thing that some people may be looking for in it that isnt there. This book will not tell you everything that you want to know about making a web page. It is exactly what the title says, it is a desk reference. I would not recommend it to a person that has no experience with web pages (mainly HTML), but if you know the basics behind a web page, and want to know how to improve your web page, buy this book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent ALL-IN-ONE reference...........2007-03-03

I work a lot with various businesses and part of my work includes web design. In the past, I was also a Director of Education for PeopleSoft and I have served in similar capacities for a variety of companies in Silicon Valley. As such, I am well-qualified to judge the merit of this materail and I must say it is a real bargain for the 800+ one stop shopping reference for DreamWeaver 8.

The book is well-organized and it could be used as either a text or an "as needed" reference manual. The descriptions are clear, to the point and easy to find. It also deals with topics such as inserting Flash video and has a lot of meaty content in addition to simple instructions.

This book is truly a "must have" reference for any web developer!

4 out of 5 stars helpful.......2007-02-14

very helpful, but there is nothing like having someone show you how to use a program. I got pretty far though just with the book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent reference.......2006-11-18

I run two websites and know Dreamweaver, but only enough to keep my sites running. I needed a reference for those occasions when I do something new, and this book filled the niche perfectly. The chatty, easy to follow descriptions of various functions in Dreamweaver make it easy for me to add functionality when I need them. Two thumbs up!

5 out of 5 stars Even experienced sellers will learn something.......2007-07-08

I have bought and sold stuff online for years and this book still had useful information in it. It gives useful, specific sources for many different categories of eCommerce.
I have paid much more for courses and books from so called marketing experts that didn't have near as much information.
So often you will read or hear that you need to do this or that, but they never tell you the specific places that you can go to get it done.
The many different categories of selling advice would at first make you think that it just glosses over them but once you start to read you see that they are one of the strengths of this book... you just keep finding good advice to tweak and improve your online business.
From web site design and boosting traffic to credit card acceptance to keeping your customers happy or even legal advice for people just starting out, it's hard to name just one part that would be considered the best part of this book. Site security to even the basics of chosing a business name are covered.
It doesn't matter if you are only thinking about starting an online business or if you have various web sites and are an experienced eBay user, there will be something in here that will make you glad you bought it.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent- From Basic info to More Advanced all in One!.......2007-06-18

This book was a real surprise. I fully expected to use it as a resource for new Ebay/Web commerce users that we help teach but found it excelled not only in the basics but in pretty much the whole plan of where you would want to be online in the long run. I am particulary fond of books that discuss legal and accounting set up and this one covers a lot of good info like type of organization, record keeping, copyrights and trademarks, a tax overview etc. A great foundation for the new online business. There is a lot of information regarding web site design, internet security and boosting your sales. Usually many books would leave off in this area but not this one. It has information on taking your retail business online , selling from a storefront and covers some important ideas like affiliate marketing and finding a niche. Whether deciding to operate on Ebay or with your own website this book is jam packed with information. Even as an experienced online user I found myself making notes from many of the sections in the book including those with suggestions on what to do to expand sales, deal with changes and other customer issues. Just as a note this is one huge book. Over 800 pages including the index and for the price a bargain. For Ebayers I would recommend this book and a general Ebay book as a package to buy. If working directly on your own e-commerce site I would recommend this book with with a web 2.0 or social marketing book.

4 out of 5 stars Good comprehensive starting point for the prospective eBay-er.......2007-03-28

This author is one of the current gurus in the area of making a ton by selling stuff on eBay. I've been registered there for almost a decade myself, buying books and stamps at first, and then selling them. I was never out to amass a fortune, the way Collier and so many others seems to be, but I've made a slow and steady income and I've been happy with that. Since I taught myself how to do all that stuff back when eBay was still a relatively site, I've never felt the need of a how-to book, but a colleague recommended this one so I decided to take a look at it. Not bad, not bad at all. While enthusiastic (because it's required by the publisher of this series), Collier manages not to get carried away too often. For instance, she will suggest good online business practices, then confess that she seldom follows this one or that one herself. I didn't find anything I didn't already know in the "Basics" section (which was kind of a relief), but she has some interesting things to say about researching goods on the Web, whether you're buying or selling, and some subtle points about the way PayPal works which I hadn't really thought about, and so on. The author also has a strong background in marketing and sales and what she has a number of thoughtful things to say regarding the application of that experience to eBay, things that us humanities majors have never had to learn. So, while I won't follow her advice on using QuickBooks, and I don't expect to open an eBay Store, I certainly put a lot of bookmarks in this fat volume for future reference and rereading.

    5 out of 5 stars Very informative!.......2007-03-13

Although you will find yourself needing a lot of time to read it, I think this book has all what you need to know about ebay. either to buy or sell. It is very informative and easy to read. I recomend it.

    5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Resource.......2007-02-14

If you're on a tight budget, much of what she tells you is actually explained on eBay in the "Site Map", but you can't spend ALL your time online! For example: I wanted to have my own domain outside eBay. Marsha provided a springboard saving me hours of research time. I ended up with one of her suggestions. That tip alone has saved me beaucoup $$. Ideal for beginning to intermediate sellers.

CON: this deals only with eBay. I find selling on Amazon often to be the better choice. Also no mention of Overstock nor Yahoo.

Very well organized book for starter.

Reason giving only 4 stars is while the first few chapters has both C# and VB source codes, when it gets to later advanced topics, only VB codes are available.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good All in one Reference.......2007-01-29

I have to say I'm rating this product without completly reading the whole thing, that said... I can say the book is a real useful tool to introduce you into the basics of dotNET programing.

I've programming in VBscript (ASP) pages for years, and I've been meaning to start with the dotNET stuff for quite a bit now. This book is writen in the same way as all for dummies books, very easy to follow, and very straight forward, however it's exactly about what the title says: a reference.

To actually learn dotNET programming from zero, you have to learn a hell of a lot of stuff! Thats why this book is so good. If you have never programmed before and want to jump in to the dotNET world, this book provides you with the basics of almost everything you need. BUT this is the thing: You will be a bit confused if you don't know any programming at all and you start reading from the beggining, for its been perfect so far, but for newbies I guess it would be confussing so you will find your self skipping to later chapters to get some introduction into HTML or Visual basic.net or C#. The book will save you a lot of time and money if you have some basic knowledge of HTML and server side programming, but if you none at all I would start with the Visual Basic or C# part, or even HTML if you need it.

So the conclusion is It's a very useful compilation of 8 books that you would normally buy separatly if you had NOOO IDEA at all of developping websites with programming languajes. If you have some basic knowledge you will probably not read all of it, but hey! its a reference book for dummies! So as I said, pretty good buy and very complete. Of course you will need to get other docummentation in order to get a higher knowledge of decent dotNET programming.

One thing i noticed is that the main code examples are in both languajes C# and VB.net but sometimes it only mentions the C# cases, so it seems its more focused to this languaje.

My company throws different projects in my lap and I have to scramble to learn new technology in order to meet the deadline.
I was very impressed on how this book helped set up things I needed in Asp.net.
Easy to find things and very easy to follow with plain explanations.
ANd, with C++ and VB reference, I was very pleased.
It might not have ALL the answers, but no book ever does.
As a beginner, I was very pleased.

    4 out of 5 stars good compilation.......2006-11-05

Saved me some money combining several books. Easy to read and understand.

5 out of 5 stars Can't ask for better book: "The Everyday Internet All-in-One Desk Reference For Dummies (For Dummies)".......2007-08-29

I've first checked this book out from the Chicago Public Library three times and once kept it two months after the book check out expired. The I purchased the book myself. I can not offer enough praise for this well researched and written book on the Internet. This is definitely the "Book" for pros and "dummies" alike.

I have been working in technology for eighteen years with the U.S. Navy and using the Internet for nine years now and admittedly I only possessed about less 10% of the available resources that was presented in this book. Just visiting and bookmarking all those interesting link to various useful Web sites was good enough for me (100+ useful bookmarks from this book alone).

My college textbooks and other "big computer books" weren't as valuable as this one. With this new gained knowledge, I've referred this book to my instructor for the "Basic Internet Class" that I took at the one of the City Colleges of Chicago (Truman College) and my fellow classmates agreed that this book "The Everyday Internet All-in-One Desk Reference For Dummies" was more informative than our classroom resources and textbook. Buy this book if you want to REALLY learn something about this subject.

One final thought, read Mr. Peter Weverka's "The Internet Giga Book for Dummies". You won't be disappointed in my recommendation on this wonderful read. Peace out and take care.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent!!.......2007-02-12

You'll learn more practical information about "everything internet" within the pages of this book than 7 years of online meandering. Seriously, just buy this sucker cause it provides clear answers to questions you don't even know you have yet, or should have. Excellent book. Truly a horizon broadener.

Pardon me for being immodest and giving this book a 5-star rating, since I'm the author, but I believe this is the best book going about the latest incarnation of the Internet.

These are exciting times for the Internet. Peer-to-peer file sharing, news aggregators, and other advances in technology have inspired a new generation of Web sites and services. Never before has the Internet offered so many ways to conduct research, entertain yourself, or learn new things.

The motive behind this book is to present everything on the Internet that's worth doing because it's useful, it's a lot of fun, or it's innovative and therefore worth checking out. Close to a thousand different Web sites are described in this book, but this book isn't a directory of Web sites. The focus is on doing things -- researching, online banking, communicating, making new friends, playing games, talking over the Internet telephone, online shopping, online selling, and blogging.

In the course of describing these and other activities -- everyday activities that can be part of your Internet repertoire -- I introduce you to the best and brightest of the Internet.

For those who are interested, this book looks at the technical aspects of the Internet. It tells you how to select an ISP and gives you instructions for connecting your computer to the Internet. The book explains how to protect your privacy and security, and keep viruses and spyware at bay, as well as how to use the different plug-ins (Flash, Acrobat Reader, and others). You will find advice for making the Internet a safe and rewarding experience for children, many Web sites for children and parents, and instructions for using America Online.

Find out how to use a Web browser and how to be an Internet researcher, or better yet, an Internet detective from this book. It explains search techniques for reaching into all corners of the Internet to quickly find the information you need. You discover how to get the latest news and how to stay on top of late-breaking news with aggregators, as well as how to use different e-mail programs (some free and some not). You get definitive instructions in this book for preventing your inbox from being inundated with spam.

Look to this book to refine instant messenger programs, create a blog, and find mailing lists and message boards where you can exercise your obsessions. You find out how to conduct research in newsgroups and subscribe to newsgroups, as well as how to join or create your own Yahoo! group and chat on the IRC.

For budding Web site developers, this book demonstrates how to create a Web site on the cheap and how to submit a Web site to search engines so the site gets more hits. You also explore the social networking phenomenon and learn about Web sites and services where you can make new friends and reunite with old ones. The book has detailed instructions for setting up your computer so you can make free long-distance telephone calls over the Internet.

I devote part of the book to online finances -- how to research investments and get the latest financial news, maintain an online investment portfolio, and do your banking chores online.

You will find many shopping search engines and Web sites that specialize in comparison-shopping, as well as online catalogs, stores for bargain hunters, consumer-report Web sites, and an "online shopping bazaar" with hundreds of off-beat online shops worth visiting. I take you to a number of online auction houses, including eBay, and you discover how to search for, bid on, and buy items at bargain prices, as well as how to pay for items with the excellent PayPal service.

You find out how to be the first on your block to be an online seller and how you can make money by selling or conducting a business over the Internet.

Finally, the book looks into different Internet pastimes and pursuits. I'm warning you: Some of these activities are addictive. You discover the many excellent genealogical research Web sites and how to conduct genealogical research for free over the Internet. The book also looks at games sites, including novel games such as Geocaching. For travelers and armchair-adventurers, I direct you to Web sites where you can get travel advice, plan vacations, purchase tickets, and book hotel rooms and rental cars. You discover how to turn your lowly computer into an entertainment console by purchasing music online or sharing music files.

I am intrigued by the idea that a Web site is a creative endeavor in and of itself -- that a Web site is a clickable piece of artwork. For this book, I chose not only Web sites that are useful for finding information or buying things but also Web sites that I consider intriguing, wonderful, astonishing, bizarre, or entertaining.

Some people are calling this latest incarnation of the Internet "the Web 2.0." This book is your guide to the next incarnation of the Internet. It was written to show you how to make the Internet fun and useful again.
