Book Description
Nicholson's Microeconomic Theory: Basic Principles and Extensions, 9th edition is a tried-and-true, well-known and respected market-leading text. Applauded for providing the most clear and accurate presentation of advanced microeconomic concepts, it offers an ideal level of mathematical rigor for upper level undergraduate students and beginning graduate students. It gives students the opportunity to work directly with theoretical tools, real-world applications, and cutting edge developments in the study of microeconomics. This book is solid, rigorous, comprehensive, and is sensibly challenging for students, best serving students with a mathematics background.
Customer Reviews:
Good intermediate micro.......2007-04-24
This book is very well structured and makes your troubled economist life easier. You definitely need math knowledge but Nicholson explains difficult concepts in a masterful and understandable manner, so the ideas are easier to understand. I would say it is between Varian and Mas Colell. The first part is abundant in relevant examples (it somehow dwindles after) and the questions at the end of the chapters are quite useful.
Very good intermediate book.......2006-12-21
It is very good textbook to learn microeconomics with intuitions and methodology. But, some people are comparing this book with Mas Colell. Nonsense! Mas Colell is a PhD level, pretty technical, "heavy duty" book. This book is an intermediate level book for senior undergrads or master students. On the other hand, Binger&Hofmann's Microeconomics with Calculus book is better then this, in my opinion. It has less story more information. This book spends lots of lines to explain some small points which is boring for someone who should know these stories before starting graduate studies. But it is more comprehensive than baby Varian. Some departments are using Pyndick's book, but I didn't use it. I believe that Binger&Hofmann is the best in this category if you wanna learn Microeconomics using mathematical tools.
Pretty good book........2006-11-10
the shipping was alright.. the book is new and pretty good. happy with it overall..=)
Very Good Overview of Micro Theory.......2006-11-10
After using this book for a math-intensive micro theory course, I would heartily recommend Nicholson's text, which is written clearly with relevant examples and straightforward, useful problems at the end of each chapter. The book is very math-intense and requires a good knowlege of multivariable calculus, but since the reader is probably buying this book for a class, he or she most likely already has the mathematics background necessary. Thumbs up.
Not such an easy read.......2006-10-18
Okay book, not the best read, but better than the Mas-Collel green books. This book gives a lot of info on theory but I thought it lacked wrt practical (applied examples). Used for a graduate level course in Micro Econ. My particular course is very hard (this class serves both graduate and PhD Finance students) so needless to say, I am ordering the workbook to help me survive!

Book Description

Customer Reviews:
Essential reading for entrepreneurs and sales people.......2007-10-20
I am not a marketer, but getting marketing right is critical. If an entrepreneur or sales person reads only one book on marketing, this would be it.
Trout and Ries write the laws on marketing.......2007-09-27
Using actual examples and sharp analysis, Al Ries and Jack Trout offer 22 "laws" that amount to a basic, concise distillation of their marketing experience and wisdom. Their examples are pithy enough to keep the most jaded marketing person engaged. And their lessons are embedded verities that would be hard to dispute. The only drawback is that this classic may be a bit dated, so it is interesting to see how surprisingly well some of their original observations have fared over the years. We recommend this classic to anyone seriously interested in marketing. After all, you can't ignore the law.
Timeless laws.......2007-07-14
Although this book is rather old, and was written before the online era, these marketing laws are timeless and should be etched in to the mind of every marketer. Highly recommended, even in 2007.
Still A Great Book.......2007-05-20
Although it was written in 1994, this book holds strong as an good resource for marketing professionals. It is a fun and fast read that will get you focused on what you need to be doing to be a successful marketer.
"Great Place to start for the beginner"........2007-05-11
This book was fun to read. It is straight to the point, a quick read, easy to follow and written for the novice or expert with lots of meaningful contents, great ideas and examples. It is not a book that will leave you confused, it will leave you with a full understanding of what it takes to be successful in marketing. This book is not going to turn you into a marketing guru over night. "Marketing situations are subject to a zillion of circumstances" as Alexander Repiev puts it. This is just a primer on the subject. However, this book's concept is very faddish. It is very contradictory and deceptive as some of the laws depict, but by the time most people realize it they would have already spent their money on the book.

Book Description
As the former Chief People Officer at PepsiCo, and now a management professor at the Columbia University School of Business, Feiner shares his solutions from his years of handling unexpected crises, mediating between warring corporate factions, and taking care of all the people problems that pop up on a routine basis in companies all over the world. Feiners approach is based on common sense and practicality, and his book is full of examples that managers everywhere will identify with and relate to. Along the way, Feiner doles out his pragmatic laws of how those in supervisory roles can resolve these vexing situations. Interactive and entertaining, THE FEINER POINTS OF LEADERSHIP will be mandatory reading for anyone in a managerial position.
Download Description
THE FEINER POINTS OF LEADERSHIP offers fifty insightful laws covering everything from managing tough bosses and difficult subordinates, to dealing with uncooperative colleagues, to overcoming resistance to corporate change. Based on Feiner's experiences as an aspiring executive, senior leader, and management consultant, THE FEINER POINTS shows you that leadership has little to do with grand strategies or personal charisma. And the author's tales from the trenches will make you smile as you discover:. The Law of Building a Cathedral: Leaders convince their people that they're building a cathedral, not cutting stone. The Law of Class vs. Style: Never...ever...ever...ever treat your boss like a bumbling old fool (even if he or she is one). The Law of Winning Championships: No matter how talented the team, team members have different agendas-and leaders know what they are. The Law of the Silent Sinner: If you can't tell anyone what you're doing, don't do it!. The Law of the Onion: High-Performance Leaders look beneath the surface-and never assume anything. The Law of the Tombstone: Remember what's really important-and that your net worth won't be noted on your final resting place. With an easy-to-access appendix that lists typical office problems and points you to the laws that can solve them, THE FEINER POINTS OF LEADERSHIP will help you right away-with dramatic and measurable results that ensure the long-term success of both your career and your organization.
Customer Reviews:
Spectacular book on leadership.......2007-07-15
I bought this book on the recommendation of students who had taken the class with Feiner. It has surpassed all my expectations. Its the most clearly-written and practical book on leadership that I have ever come across. Most books and articles only say "what" to do - and that horse been beaten plenty. Feiner gets into "why" and "how" these ideas should be implemented, e.g., why resenting, stonewalling or badmouthing an incompetent boss is a recipe for disaster. And his genius is in describing simple ways to put lofty ideas into play. This book is SO GOOD that I plan to read it AGAIN after a few months on the job to reflect on issues that have come up.
Practical!.......2007-04-17
On the first page, Michael Feiner disputes the traditional "heroic individual" picture of a leader. This thinking, referred to as "Myth of the Great Man", holds that leadership is an inherently individual phenomenon consisting of solitary heroics, epitomized by Patton, Napoleon, etc... But Feiner states that 90% of leadership is invisible - "the aggregation of hundreds upon hundreds of small interactions - most of which take place out our sight - projected across layer upon layer of relationships, day in and day out". He spends the remaining 250+ pages explaining this, through a series of eponymous Feiner laws of leadership.
Feiner pulls liberally from his experiences at Pepsi. He peppers his high opinion of his own accomplishments with self-deprecating humor, and he shares his mistakes and regrets. His text is very readable and delivered in a conversational style. I found a good many quotable sound bytes I liked, some original and some from other authors.
At times, there seemed to be a repetitive effort to fill pages - laws identified by smug little titles supported by anecdotes from the author's career, then summarized at the end of each chapter and summarized again at the book's end. And occasionally I questioned the logic of the organization of the chapters. However, by the time I finished the book, it all seemed to work.
Feiner offers some really powerful practical insights on treating people right, sticking to your values, and being politically correct where at all possible. No faddish management theory here, just timeless advice and applicable tools that apply to all levels of organizational leadership and interaction. My copy of "The Feiner Points" is full of highlights and notes and I suspect I will be referring to it frequently.
A readable practical book.......2005-12-05
I bought this book few months ago and it was interesting to go through it step by step. As a leader the first thing one must learn is how to deal with subordinates. After going through the 8 laws mentioned in Chapter 3: Leading Subordinates, one can imagine how less we focus on the people who are our main assets. A leader's success depends upon the success of his subordinates and these 8 laws are the basis for that success. One need to read each law multiple times so that it gets engrossed in one's heart. The "Performance contract" is a must for everyone to set clear expectations.
The examples provided in the books are mostly based on author's experience and I found Feiner very sincere in putting them straight. Overall a must for anyone who wants to build lasting relationship with their people.
The Principles that Enable Success in Leadership and Life..........2004-12-07
With clarity, courage and conviction, this book delivers a message conveying the "whats" and, more importantly, the "hows" to successful leadership that enable individual, team, and company performance to grow and succeed. In short, Feiner guides leaders to put the heart and humanity back into business and in doing so, awakens the soul of business - yielding an environment that is embraced mutually and faithfully by peers, subordinates, bosses, and the total organization.
"The Feiner Points of Leadership" is the story of a man's extraordinary career, where past failures have in turn drawn enlightenment, as he builds a leadership model that all leaders and managers "must" understand, follow and instill throughout their organization to obtain competitive advantage.
Feiner guides the reader into becoming a "High Performance Leader," which will drive unprecedented and unlimited success in business - and in life! A must read.
Great Toolbox!.......2004-11-12
I have several leadership books, mostly social/psychological theory stuff; Feiner makes sense! Every new supervisor should have this on his/her desk, as well as "And Dignity for All" by Despain. Put it to work immediately.

Basic Skills for the New Arbitrator, Second Edition
ASIN: 0967097339 |
Book Description
BASIC SKILLS FOR THE NEW MEDIATOR provides a detailed overview of mediation, from the premediation conference through all stages of the mediation session. It guides the new mediator through the mediation process by answering the one hundred questions most frequently asked by new mediators. BASIC SKILLS FOR THE NEW MEDIATOR has been used successfully for self-instruction and as a training manual. Experienced mediators and attorneys who represent clients in mediation will also find this book extremely useful. The Appendix "Everything You Never Wanted to Know About the Rules of Evidence" is especially valuable for the non-attorney mediator, who must often deal with the evidentiary vocabulary of the legal profession. You will learn to establish your authority as a mediator, schedule the mediation session, deliver the mediator's opening statement, prioritize issues, preside during joint sessions, conduct private caucuses, overcome impasses, identify "hidden agenda" and "throwaway" items, deal with parties who lack settlement authority, and aid parties to achieve a viable settlement.
Customer Reviews:
Indispensable.......2006-12-08
If you want to be a mediator, you will have to take an exhausting training in just about any jurisdiction. You will be required to take at least 40 hours of training. In fact, before beginning the training, my best advice for you is to get a copy of this book, which can be read in four hours or less, and I am positively sure that you will have a considerable edge over your training classmates. They will all wonder if you came to the training with prior experience. Not only you will feel more confident in knowing the process, but you will also get good suggestions from the author as to how to conduct particular matters. I think that when you want to try something new, whatever it may be, e.g., table chess, judo, dog breeding, etc., you need a beginners guide and lots of advice from knowledgeable people. This is precisely what this book does with respect to mediation.
Great resource.......2002-05-02
I am a construction lawyer in the Washington, D.C. area and found Judge Goodman's book to be just the thing in giving me a primer on mediation approaches. It is organized extremely well, is easy to read, and gave me lots of help as I prepared for my first mediation. The format of questions and answers is perfect for this subject. The only thing I would like to see is a second volume for advanced mediation, since Judge Goodman has much to offer.
A MUST READ for anyone involved in any of the ADR processes........1999-07-27
Both of Allan Goodman's books, BASIC SKILLS FOR THE NEW MEDIATOR and BASIC SKILLS FOR THE NEW ARBITRATOR, deserve to be read and re-read by every ADR professional and every advisor to parties in dispute before he or she enters the session. As a practicing mediator, arbitrator and ADR trainer, I know I do, and it gives me the presence to relax and "enjoy" the session, because I know I will be giving the best process skills of ADR to the parties and their representatives.
Concise, readily assimilated answers to some of the most perplexing problems faced by ADR neutrals are presented at each stage of the mediation and arbitration process. I would further recommend the appropriate book be given to the disputing parties to assist them in knowledgeable decision-making and a successful resolution.
Just What I was Looking For!.......1999-07-17
As a new mediator, I was looking for a book that would describe mediation skills in clear, non-legal language. This book is it! The question-and-answer format is a very effective teaching tool that walks you through the mediation process. When I think of a question that I would want to ask, it seems that the author has anticipated it and there it is. Mr. Goodman is obviously someone with extensive experience, both as a trainer and a mediator. I am a retired teacher and I found particularly valuable the appendix "Everything You Never Wanted to Know About the Rules of Evidence." The author offers an interesting explanation for including this information - that a mediator should have a basic knowledge of the concepts of evidence because we all (not just lawyers) apply these principles in every day life. This appendix alone is worth the price of the book.
I also purchased the companion volume, Basic Skills for the New Arbitrator, so I could gain an understanding of arbitration and broaden my knowledge of the increasingly popular field of alternative dispute resolution. I found that book equally easy to understand and very valuable.
Basic Skills for Advocates, Not Just Mediators.......1999-06-30
Thirty years ago I began the practice of law by serving as a Law Clerk to a federal judge. In retrospect, after three decades as a civil litigator, the most important lesson that I learned back then was to think like a Judge when acting as an Advocate...to get inside the Judge's head, gameplan a winning scenario, and present my case accordingly.
Allan Goodman's seminal work ostensibly is a handbook for novice Mediators, providing checklists, advice and guidance for the newly minted specialist in Alternative Disputes Resolution. As a practical matter, it is an indispensible tool for any advocate - lawyer or lay - in planning a successful Mediation and avoiding an expensive, lengthy courtroom battle. Judge Goodman provides the requisite virtual roadmap through any Mediator's head.
