4 out of 5 stars A mixed blessing.......2001-04-13

This is the most useful Training book I've come across in a long time. I find myself referring to it often. However, it is in desperate need of editing. It could easily be cut down by 1/3 - and that would make it much better.

3 out of 5 stars Did anyone edit this book?.......2001-01-06

It is tragic to find wonderful research compiled into a book wrought with spelling, grammatical, and sentence structure errors. Unnecessary comments by the author makes reading even more tedious. A new edition with a good editor would make this book priceless.

"Ultimate" and "comprehensive" are the key words in the title that set this handbook apart from the others. They say it all - over 600 pages of checklists, diagrams, models, and examples covering every topic of the workshop business. And you are given permission to copy pages for personal workshop use! When paging through the book I began to play a game - he must have missed something! Well, whatever it is, I'm still looking...

Book Description

Adult development and learning have always existed as two separate fields of study, with development falling under psychology and learning under education. Recent advances in theory, research, and practice, however, have made it clear that an important reciprocal relationship exists between them: advances in development frequently lead to learning, and conversely, learning quite often fuels development. The synchronicity between development and learning is responsible for positive changes in many capacities, including insight, intelligence, reflective and meta-cognition, personality expression, interpersonal competence, and self-efficacy. This synchronicity is also leading to the growth of a new discipline at the borders of adult development and learning. The Handbook of Adult Development and Learning is the first to bring together the leading scholars from both adult development and learning to explore what will form the foundation for this new discipline--the latest research at the intersection of these fields. It examines six major aspects of their intersection: foundations, key areas of integration, the self system, higher reaches of development and learning, essential contexts, and specific applications. An introductory chapter explains why it is so important to recognize and fuel the growth of this new discipline. Subsequent chapters review the latest theoretical and empirical literature and provide a rich itinerary for future research. This handbook is a must-read for all who promote optimal aging. It will be an invaluable reference for scholars in development and education, as well as rich resource for policy makers and practitioners, such as corporate executives and human-resource personnel.

5 out of 5 stars Ground breaking work that lays the foundation for a new discipline .......2006-04-16

Dr. Carol Hoare is to be commended for having the vision and passion needed to generate The Handbook for Adult Development and Learning. The impetus for the Handbook came from her 15-year experience teaching two separate courses (Adult Development and Adult Learning) at the University level. Based on her experiences within the classroom, Dr. Hoare astutely recognized that adult development and adult learning are symbiotic and needed to be examined and studied in an integrated fashion. The Handbook is a tour de force that comprehensively reviews and synthesizes the research literature, presents state-of-the-art data and autobiographical cases, and skillfully applies theory to practice to enhance the reader's experience. Throughout the Handbook, each chapter illustrates how adult development influences learning and how adult learning can fuel development. The Handbook also provides a healthy and positive viewpoint to the aging process in that development and learning are considered to dynamically evolve over one's lifespan. This is well illustrated in Hoare's chapter 16: Work as the catalyst of adult development and learning. This chapter poignantly discusses the importance of work in our culture and to our identity, and how work can influence and enhance our life long development and learning. The Handbook is a must read and an outstanding resource for educators, administrators, students, practitioners, and others interested in learning more about the integral connections between adult development and the adult learner.

    Book Description

Sponsored by the American Association of Adult & Continuing Education "This monumental work is a testimony to the science of adult education and the skills of Wilson and Hayes. It is a veritable feast for nourishing our understanding of the current field of adult education. The editors and their well-chosen colleagues consistently question how we know and upon what grounds we act. They invite us to consider not only how we can design effective adult education, but also why we practice in a particular socio-economic context."
--Jane Vella, author of Taking Learning to Task and Learning to Listen, Learning to Teach

"This new handbook captures the exciting intellectual and professional development of our field in the last decade. It is an indispensable resource for faculty, students, and professionals."
--Jack Mezirow, emeritus professor, Adult and Continuing Education, Teachers College, Columbia University

For nearly seventy years, the handbooks of adult and continuing education have been definitive references on the best practices, programs, and institutions in the field. In this new edition, over sixty leading authorities share their diverse perspectives in a single volume--exploring a wealth of topics, including: learning from experience, adult learning for self-development, race and culture in adult learning, technology and distance learning, learning in the workplace, adult education for community action and development, and much more. Much more than a catalogue of theory and historical facts, this handbook strongly reflects the values of adult educators and instructors who are dedicated to promoting social and educational opportunity for learners and to sustaining fair and ethical practices.

This is a book for a student who just finished HIgh school at 20 yrs. old like I did or have gotten a GED. My mom says it's never too late to learn and go to college. YOu could be young or old and still earn a diploma late in HIgh School and a GED.

This was featured in the Boston Globe in a section for adults going back to school. I found it very concise and useful!

5 out of 5 stars The best guide for adult college students.......2004-05-12

This book is an excellent resource for adults, especially full-time working adults, preparing to return to or start higher education programs. The author does a wonderful job of helping potential students "shop around" for the schools and programs that will meet specific goals of each student. Admissions recruiters' job is to sell the school they work for, this book helps shoppers look at options available in a non-bias way.
Explaining the difference in accreditation, in degrees, certificates, continuing education, and training programs, traditional and non-traditional, format and delivery of courses, etc. is extremely helpful for individuals to discern the differences between the countless options available to adult learners.

In some ways, the adult returning to college will find the experience much easier than it would have been in his or her youth, to the extent that the "mature student" will wonder why everyone doesn't wait till adolescence is long gone before engaging with lectures and majors and essays and exams. But while the distractions of youth may be fewer, your certainty about the goal greater and pursuit of it more dedicated, there are complications to adult education, and every bit of preparation helps. In fact, thinking it through, reading a book, and working out some of the conflicts in advance is precisely the sorts of things you probably wouldn't have done at age 18.

Going Back to School covers the admissions process and student-support services, how to deal with math anxiety and term-paper phobia, and how to handle the fears involved in public speaking and exams, as well as other relevant issues, such as organizing your time, juggling your probably complicated responsibilities, and coping with family while you pursue this new goal. Supportive and soothing, in that it's tailored to the concerns of the adult student, this back-to-school guide offers practical suggestions as well as a reinforcement of the notion that you can succeed as an adult in academe. --Stephanie Gold

5 out of 5 stars Great Book !.......2007-10-02

As an older returning non-traditional student, for me, this book really answered the questions you don't even think to ask but should. It really helps overcome a lot of anxiety for returning students, especially on Math.

It also gives you an excellent game plan to follow on studying, and life management for those married students or single parents returning to school. It's worth the small investment. It is well written by someone thats been there.

          4 out of 5 stars I lived this.......2007-05-05

I read this book last summer before taking the plunge and returning to college after almost 30 years. It was invaluable and I definitely recommend it!

3 out of 5 stars Preparing for an education.......2003-07-22

The intended audience for this book is an older student who is going to college to earn some kind of undergraduate degree. It's probably unnecessary for those seeking higher degrees, but some younger students might benefit from reading it. The author is a Psychology professor and much of the book draws from theories of learning. You'll also see some psychoanalysis in the discussions of anecdotal stories. If you're not into that, it may be a problem. The author is best at discussing the broader issues concerning school such as motivation and knowing your support systems, while the details about writing a term paper, or overcoming math anxiety were thin and almost useless.

If you're an adult, and you're anxious about going back to school, then I recommend the book. It'll soothe your anxiety and you'll be better able to evaluate your readiness for school. Otherwise, I'm not so sure you'll find it worth your while. If you want a book on how to study well, better ones exist.

5 out of 5 stars Some stuff I knew already, but some really great study info!.......2002-11-20

I picked this book up with the intension of just skimming it but I read every page! I also recommended this book to several of my friends that are going back to college. The author gives you some really interesting and effective strategies for studying(I've tried them - and got 104% on the next test I took), writing papers, scheduling your time. It was really helpful and I would recommend it to any college student not only older ones!

            Book Description

Plan, conduct, and evaluate effective internship experiences!

School administration internships are a central ingredient in any preservice program, and they can be very effective if they are well-organized and well-designed. Capasso and Daresh have created a blueprint for an effective internship program that can turn preservice administrators into transformational leaders, not simply organizational survivors.

The School Administrator Internship Handbook is written for the intern, to both understand the internship program and the roles of all of the participants in the program. The book helps the intern self-assess leadership ability, challenge one’s commitment to the field, become a reflective practitioner, and collaborate with the field mentor and the university faculty member to make the internship a rich and valuable experience.

Internship directors will find that the handbook addresses them as well, providing opportunities to assess students’ abilities to take theory to practice, develop community outreach programs, and assess the effectiveness of the entire preservice program. And mentors will get a clear understanding of their role in facilitating the intern’s experience.

            Other key topics include:

Finally, an effective blueprint for preservice programs! This practical guide is designed for everyone involved in the school administrator internship, especially the men and women who will be stepping into assistant principalships, principalships, and other administrative roles.

He has also served as a consultant and speaker for the U.S. Office of Education, the New Jersey State Department of Education, and various government agencies and school districts.

John C. Daresh has spent more than 20 years in higher education, having served as a faculty member and administrator at the University of Texas at El Paso, the University of Northern Colorado, Ohio State University, and the University of Cincinnati. Book Description

Technical Rescue Operations, Volume II: Common Emergencies is the second in a three-volume series by Larry Collins. Volume II covers responding to, managing, and conducting rescues in the “daily” setting of fire/rescue agencies. This includes the kind of technical rescues that confront firefighters and rescuers on practically a daily basis. This volume also explains how to handle more complex and large-scale rescue operations that challenge responders to apply solid rescue principals for longer periods of time, with the assistance required of additional resources and under more strict command and control because of the scope of the incident, its newsworthiness, crowds of people arriving on the scene, and getting the immediate attention of local or regional elected officials.

            Features & Benefits:

Learn from the author's repeated “once in a career” incidents that are commonplace for busy fire/rescue units such as the L.A. County Fire Department's USAR task force/USAR Company

Maximize the base of knowledge developed by leading international rescuers and fire/rescue agencies, taught by a current practitioner assigned as an officer of one of the most experienced and battle-hardened fire department rescue units in the nation

Contains “best practices” from fire/rescue agencies from around the world, showing how technical rescues and disasters can be managed better, faster, and safer

            Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars An Absolute Waste of Money.......2006-11-22

Judging from the book's title (and its price), you would expect to find a tight, well-written, authoritative work on technical rescue operations. Instead, you get newspaper clippings about Southern California disasters that you could get free over the Internet, some murky photographs that look like like rejects from an amateur's scrapbook, and WAY too many of the author's own "war stories". Here's what you DON'T get: a single detailed procedure, a single technical diagram, or anything that even remotely resembles a standard authoritative strategy for handling ANY type of disaster. I don't believe that the author wrote the book with any intent to defraud, but this volume has got to be the most audacious rip-off in the history of Search-and-Rescue education. Save your money, and do your staff a favor: buy ANYTHING besides this book.
