The Ultimate Training Workshop.......2007-01-26
This book has everything one needs to lead successful workshops and training programs, from agendas to evaluations. It gives strategies for designing workshops to meet the needs of the learners. It reviews models and theories of best practices. If you are in the business of providng workshops or training this book is an excellent resource. It has everything you need.
A mixed blessing.......2001-04-13
This is the most useful Training book I've come across in a long time. I find myself referring to it often. However, it is in desperate need of editing. It could easily be cut down by 1/3 - and that would make it much better.
Did anyone edit this book?.......2001-01-06
It is tragic to find wonderful research compiled into a book wrought with spelling, grammatical, and sentence structure errors. Unnecessary comments by the author makes reading even more tedious. A new edition with a good editor would make this book priceless.

A must for people in the workshop business!.......1999-03-05
"Ultimate" and "comprehensive" are the key words in the title that set this handbook apart from the others. They say it all - over 600 pages of checklists, diagrams, models, and examples covering every topic of the workshop business. And you are given permission to copy pages for personal workshop use! When paging through the book I began to play a game - he must have missed something! Well, whatever it is, I'm still looking...

A little skeptical .......2007-07-16
I almost put this book in my shopping cart but I decided to read the reviews first. What I find odd is that ALL but 1 of the reviewers is "A READER" and each of these review entries lacks a designation of a state or any other identifiers. Now, I am having second thoughts because it seems the ratings might have been inflated by the author or other affiliates. Not good.
Energize your teaching style!.......2002-04-28
This book is full of exciting ideas to help pep up your classroom and teaching style!:) I found so many ways to make learning meaningful to all my students. It is a great book for new teachers as well as seasoned teachers who are looking for ways to help motivate all types of students (as well as yourself). Even though I have read the book through once I still find new things to try each time I flip through the pages. This would be a great graduation gift for a new teacher!:)
"A Must-Have Book".......1999-11-30
Motivation and Learning is one of the very best books we have ever put in the hands of teachers! The strategies are useful for any classroom, but specifically useful to teachers who develop lessons under a block schedule!
This book should be must reading for the new teacher........1998-12-22
"Motivation and Learning" is loaded with motivational strategies and tips that work for all grade levels. Spence Roger's research based strategies and tips not only make teaching easier through increased motivation but also increases student achievement. This book should be must reading for the new teacher as well as the seasoned veteran. Try "Class Commitments", "Carousel Graffiti", "Vanity Plates", and "Quality Assignmrnts". These are a few of the strategies that I have used from this book at the beginning of the school year. The difference in the quality of student work was obvious. Having taught for thirty years, I thought I knew it all. This book has raised student achievement to a new level in my classes. Hats off to Spence Rogers for hitting the nail on the head with "Motivation and Learning".
one of the books I keep only an arm's length away!.......1998-12-18
This book offers a plethora of strategies and tips on increasing motivation and quality. Ideas are applicable to students Pre-K to adult. An outstanding resource--one that we provide each new teacher with!

Book Description
Why can't middle-grade students answer open-ended comprehension questions in writing as well as they do out loud?
No question about it: writing high-quality responses to comprehension questions based on narrative and expository text isn't an easy skill for middle-grade students to master. Teaching Written Response to Text gives you tools to move all your students toward independence and mastery.
With Teaching Written Response to Text, students gain independence in written response to both narrative and expository text wtih 25 open-ended questions organized around three increasingly independent student-support scaffolds.
Practical and easy to read, Teaching Written Response to Text:
shows you how to teach written response as a form of expository writing using essential strategies associated with proficient reading and effective questioning.
focuses on incorporating the principles of explicit instruction to ensure quality student performance.
provides scores of narrative and expository models that can be used as practice.
Promote reading engagement in both narrative and expository literature. Build analytic thinking skills and student independence for standardized assessments. Teaching Written Response to Text uses many elements of Best Practice to support and extend the reading process for all students, including those with reading difficulties.
Customer Reviews:
A definite "go-to" resource.......2007-08-12
After working with Nancy Boyles in a staff development workshop, I purchased this book to keep in the classroom. Open-ended response is one of the weakest areas of test performance for most students, and this book gives helpful hints, worksheets and tools to improve student responses. Highly recommended!
The Answer to Open-ended Questions is Here!.......2006-06-26
This is the perfect way for teachers to break down open-ended questions. So many states are asking students to write open-ended answers and teachers don't always know how to teach this. This book allows teachers to include open-ended questions as a part of their everyday teaching; it doesn't teach to the test. In fact, it teaches students to become more critical thinkers.
I would suggest this book as the companion to Nancy's other book entitled Constructing Meaning Through Kid-Friendly Comprehension Strategy Instruction. It focuses on the comprehension strategies.
Nancy's work is teacher and kid-friendly. Her books include reproducible pages that are the "right size." No need to enlarge and waste time. You could also print from the included CD.
This is too easy to pass on. Teachers of elementary and middle grade levels need this book!

Book Description
Make teaching easier and more effective with Quality Lesson Plans for Secondary Physical Education! This cookbook-style guide contains more than 150 ready-to-use lesson plans--enough for every day of the school year.
These classroom-tested lessons with developmentally appropriate activities enable middle school, junior high school, and high school physical educators to greatly reduce their planning time. Undergraduate students in professional practice will also benefit--reduced planning time means they can concentrate on refining their teaching skills.
You'll find four sections in Quality Lesson Plans for Secondary Physical Education: physical fitness, major sports, minor sports and activities, and single-day lessons.
The fitness unit gives you a progression of lessons designed to improve cardiorespiratory endurance, muscular strength and endurance, and flexibility. It includes protocols for AAHPERD's Physical Best and the Prudential Fitnessgram youth fitness tests. These 12 lessons can be used as a several-week unit emphasizing fitness or can be used periodically throughout the year to maintain an ongoing commitment to fitness.
The major sports units include traditional activities: badminton, basketball, dance, flag football, soccer, softball, tennis, and volleyball. For each you'll find 10 or 11 developmentally appropriate lessons that progress from beginning to more advanced skills.
The minor units include more innovative activities: bowling, floor hockey, golf, jumping rope, orienteering, pickle-ball, speedball, team handball, and ultimate frisbee. Four to seven lessons for each unit give students a solid introduction to each sport or activity.
The single-day activities include 18 lessons perfect for rainy days or as breaks between the major and minor units. Fun and challenging activities such as bocce ball, cricket, tinikling, and folk dances give students a change of pace and a brief look at alternative physical activities.
Each lesson includes information on
the purpose of the lesson,
equipment and facilities needed,
appropriate warm-ups,
skill cues for students,
teaching cues (where appropriate),
main activities, and
closure.
All the activities in Quality Lesson Plans for Secondary Physical Education are designed to maximize students' time on task and cut down on waiting. All have been tested in actual programs to ensure that they'll work well as is--no extra planning time needed! And the wide range of activities helps keep students interested and motivated throughout the school year. Even veteran teachers will find many new activities and ideas that they can put to use immediately. Use your valuable time for teaching instead of planning! Let the ready-made lessons in this indispensable reference help you make the most of your physical education classes--both you and your students will enjoy it.

The Language of Choice Theory
ASIN: 0060952857 |
Book Description
This book is the follow-up to its immediate predecessor, The Quality School. Based on the work of W. Edwards Deming and on Dr. Glasser's own choice theory, it is written for teachers who are trying to abandon the old system of boss-managing, which is effective for less than half of all students. William Glasser, M.D., explains that only through lead-management can teachers create classrooms in which all students not only do competent work but begin to do quality work. These classrooms are the core of a quality school. The book begins by explaining that to persuade students to do quality schoolwork, teachers must first establish warm, totally noncoercive relationships with their students; teach only useful material, which means stressing skills rather than asking students to memorize information; and move from teacher evaluation to student self-evaluation. There are no generalities in this book: It provides the specifics that classroom teachers seek as they begin the move to quality schools.
Customer Reviews:
Idealistic AND practical.......2006-03-08
I read this and Glasser's prequel, The Quality School. While the first book makes many good points, it is not very useful to the teacher. Glasser appeared to use that book to explain how principles of the quality workplace can be applied to the classroom. This book, The Quality School Teacher, is much more hands-on and gives practical advice on how to get students to achieve quality work. This goes against many traditional methods...some may accuse it of being idealistic and impractical. I believe it is idealistic and very practical. This is one of those books you'll want to keep around and refer to from time to time to be inspired when things aren't working in your class.
I don't understand why the other reviewer gave this only two stars but had only good things to say about it.
Good reading. . . ........1999-09-23
This book was very interesting. As a student at Byron Center High School, in Byron Center, Michigan, I was required to read this book in a class. Our class engaged in very heated discussions and debates over the ideas presented in this book. I would recommend this book to any school interested in incorporating the Choice Theory into their school!

Teaching and Learning at a Distance: Foundations of Distance Education (3rd Edition)
ASIN: 0415254817 |
Book Description
This book is for those who are thinking of setting up, or just starting to run, open and distance learning (ODL) courses. It is a practical guide to all aspects of setting up this type of course. It offers practical advice on how to find your students, expand your audience and become cost-effective without compromising quality.
Customer Reviews:
Enlightening.......2006-04-17
Distance education has been recently transformed by the introduction of the internet. However, the fundamentals of education remain the same, and all too often, teachers blinded by the promise of technology forget this. This book serves as a good primer on how to design and put into action a distance taught course. It covers the basic needs of students, and how to design the program to meet these needs. It doesn't go into detail on how to set up computer networks, or internet applications, and I think this is one of its strengths, since it won't go out of date like some other books in the genre.
I recommend this to not only to those who are planning or directing distance courses, but also to students who are thinking of or are taking distance courses. It will provide an insightful look into what goes behind such a program.

Book Description
The competence-based perspective on strategy and management emerged in the 1990s as a new approach to developing strategy and management theory and practice. In the past decade, the focus on organizational competences -- and the resources, capabilities, and processes that create competences -- has provided a highly productive "broad church" for theory development, research, and practice in both strategic and general management.
Authored by a multidisciplinary group of scholars and practitioners working within the competence perspective, the papers in this volume contribute to developing a better theoretical and practical understanding of
internal processes that significantly affect an organization's competences by exploring the dynamic, systemic, cognitive, and holistic aspects of internal processes. The papers present both theoretical developments and empirical research based on a variety of case studies and other research in diverse industrial and geographical contexts.
The papers in this volume develop four themes. Part I includes papers that address the key issues of defining and communicating the
strategic logic that directs and guides an organization's competence building and leveraging. The papers in Part II investigate the need to develop
strategic flexibilities that enable a firm to respond effectively to a range of future environmental uncertainties. Part III includes papers that focus on ways to
identify and operationalize an organization's competences -- the ultimate source of an organization's ability to compete effectively in its environment. Part IV presents several papers that investigate the
systemic interdependencies of an organization's competence building and leveraging activities.
