Customer Reviews:
An Outstanding Read!.......2007-10-09
I admit, I like to read. However, in my busy schedule, it seems that I find less and less time to sit down and read a book from cover to cover. It was hard to put this book down, but DeMoss breaks up the book into small 5-10 minute chunks that you can handle easily.
He has practical, right-on advice that you can use at work and at home. He uses stories to remind you to use time wisely, to tackle that hard project, to be a person of integrity and how you should relate to the opposite sex (just a few of the subjects mentioned in the 24 short chapters of this book).
There is a lot of knowledge in our world today but much less wisdom. This book takes you on a spiritual journey without you even realizing it. I can't say enough good about this book!
Book for Life!.......2007-09-05
The Little Red Book of Wisdom by Mark Demoss is one of the most influencial books on "life" that I have ever read. It is a short read, but one that you will reference repeatedly. I purchased a few of these books to give to those I care about.
The Little Red Book of Wisdom.......2007-09-05
This book is a must read if you are searching or seeking to add unto your wisdom. Don't hesitate to purchase it...because it's worth the money you'll purchase it for.
A great read.......2007-09-01
Also good for a gift or for leaving on the coffee table / magazine rack for visitors.
Models and inspires integrity in business and family.......2007-08-28
You don't find many books that you honestly can't bear to put down. The Little Red Book of Wisdom is sincerely one of them. It is a testimonial book of sorts that models and inspires Christian integrity for business, family, and relationships in general.
The author runs a public relations business, and leads his company using Godly wisdom and sound priorities (family over business, people over $, and Godly integrity over everything).
Mark DeMoss attributes much of his ethos to his father who passed away when the author was only 17 years old. He says that his father was the wisest man he has ever known. I think it is astounding how much DeMoss' father impacted his life, and so many others vicariously through his son, when he invested only 17 short years with his boy. This teaches us to invest our time intently, and on the right things.

Pearls from The LITTLE BOOK OF BUSINESS WISDOM
"The man who starts out simply with the idea of getting rich won't succeed; you must have a larger ambition."-JOHN D. ROCKEFELLER
"Think about the customer, not the competition: Competitors represent your industry's past, as, over the years, collective habits become ingrained. Customers are your future, representing new opportunities, ideas, and avenues for growth."-MICHAEL S. DELL
"You've got to be out in front of crowds, repeating yourself over and over again, never changing your message no matter how much it bores you." -JACK WELCH
"Always break orders to save owners. There never was a great character who did not sometimes smash the routine regulations and make new ones for himself." -ANDREW CARNEGIE
"Don't speak up at a meeting until you have something meaningful to contribute. Talking to attract attention may call attention to your blank spots." -JO FOXWORTH
"Make 'em feel guilty when they do nothing. One thing I can't stand is people who don't act on a situation. I'd rather that people make mistakes than sit around and not do something."-DAVE THOMAS
Customer Reviews:
A good read and very thought provoking.......2001-09-29
I gave this book 4 stars because, while it was refreshing to read and I definitely learned quite a bit, it wasn't a paradigm-shifting book, which is what I am increasingly moving towards for my 5 star books.
I personally love the art of business. Yeah, you read that right........business is an art...
The Little Book of Business Wisdom has tons of useful information (over 50 different short stories/essays) that you could apply to your business or to understand what differentiates average companies from great companies. I underlined more than average when reading this book. I read this book hoping to learn some insightful comments and business practices to apply to my business once I get it up and running. I am trying to plan for the future and all of these business leaders have experienced phenomenal success and growth or trained those business leaders. This book is definitely worth picking up and is a KEEPER! If you are interested in a comparable book worth picking up you may want to look at Every Mistake in the Book by F.J. Lennon as I found this book to be a very straight book from a guy that ran his own company.
Another "Classic" Resource from Krass.......2000-11-17
I really admire the talents of Peter Krass who has brilliantly edited a number of "Wisdom" books, this being the most recent. Once again, he has assembled a collection of more than 50 essays written by what are correctly referred to as "business legends." Here is how the material is organized:
Part I: Management Principles (eg Lee Iacocca and John Erik Jonsson)
Part II: Leadership Secrets (eg John F. Welch, Jr. and Robert Townsend)
Part III: Qualities for Personal Management (eg David Ogilvy and Andrew S. Grove)
Part IV: Wall Street Wizards (eg Sir John M. Templeton and Peter Lynch)
Part V: Gunslingers and the Entrepreneurial Drive (eg P.T. Barnum and Lillian Vernon)
Part VI: The Gurus (eg Warren Bennis and Peter F. Drucker)
Part VII: Builders of Culture (eg Howard M. Schultz and Mary Kay Ash)
Part VIII: Maxims for Life (eg Carley Fiorina and Benjamin Franklin)
You get the idea. I should add that some of the specific titles are probably not readily available anywhere else. For example, J.C. Penney's "Six Principles for Winning", Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield's "Our Aspirations", and Al Neuharth's "An S.O.B.'s Ten Secrets to Success." This would make a terrific holiday gift for your business associates, customers, etc. but also (especially) for recent or imminent graduates who are committed to a career in business.
Please do not ignore Krass's Introduction. As always, he offers excellent insights of his own as well as remarks which help to create an appropriate context for the essays which follow.

The Beardstown Ladies Little book of Investment Wisdom.......2006-11-27
Well, here is your polar oposite view of the other comment on this book. I found it wonderful! These are not Wall Street MBA's giving you advise. These are everyday people trying to figure out how to invest their money. Over time, the Ladies have done pretty well! If you find them a bit brash, okay! A small price to pay to get their wisdom. Buy the book!
Investment Wisdom at 9.1% returns??? Gimme a break!.......1998-09-27
Irrelevant one-liners and drawings from a bunch of underperforming pseudoinvestors with a superiority complex, written in a condescending grandmotherly tone. It was hard to keep a straight face while reading it. Save the wear and tear on your nerves by not reading this book. I didn't buy it, neither should you.

Customer Reviews:
Don't Buy.......2006-11-04
Just a quick note, the essay is interesting, but it is in the public domain, and a complete text of the essay can be found with a quick google search. Don't waste your money.
don't buy - don't buy -.......2006-09-17
"the gospel of wealth, by Andrew Carnegie" - sounds interesting, but it wasn't. This is the text of a magazine article he wrote. The theme is transfering wealth to future generations by inheritance, foundations, or spending it yourself before you die.
If you buy this book, you will get a razor thin book that is just a few thousand words.
A greedy oppressor of the working man.......2006-01-29
Carnegie gained his wealth by ruthlessly crushing the working man--crushing trade unions, cutting wages in the interest of profit. Yes, he built many libraries, etc. but he still died wealthy, with wealth obtained at the cost of the lives and health of tens of thousands of his employees. This is what American capitalism is built on, and we accept it as gospel truth now, without ever taking a real look at this man!
Inspires the best.......2005-07-20
John D. Rockefeller said this book inspired him. A previous reviewer said he read that it inspired Bill Gates too. It is no coincidence that Rockefeller, Gates, and Carnegie were the three greatest philanthropists in American history. These men have contributed more to America than 10,000 average people could. The following are just some of the contributions of the above three men: Carnegie Mellon, U of Chicago, Spellman College, Rockefeller University, medical advancements, public libraries, medical aid, art donations to museums, etc. They could have been like J. Paul Getty and hoarded the money, but they chose (or choose) to be great men.
The book talks about the responsibilities of wealthy people. Wealthy people have the opportunity to help people who don't have much opportunity and Carnegie writes about the responsibility wealthy people have to them.
Almost wasteful.......2001-12-06
Though this essay has good points, there are also things you must look at; greed. Greed can ultimately leed to things that harm and hurt people.
I agree with the fact that richer people help the economy but I also would like to add that they are very influencial... these rich people get outplayed and others follow. It always matter what kind of person.
Keeping money within your pocket doesn't help at all... and so does this say that. Circulate through the economy, but also circulate through the poor.
--Actually, I havn't read most of it, i'm just blabling on. YEY!

The single most important essay about law ever written. The perfect gift for anyone who ever entered law school, this essay defines the responsibilities of the legal profession from one of lawis greatest practitioners.
Download Description
I take it for granted that no hearer of mine will misinterpret what I have to say as the language of cynicism. The law is the witness and external deposit of our moral life. Its history is the history of the moral development of the race. The practice of it, in spite of popular jests, tends to make good citizens and good men. When I emphasize the difference between law and morals I do so with reference to a single end, that of learning and understanding the law.

The information is incorrect! You can't print this thing out! Had I known that, I would've dropped the $8 on a paper copy!
Great, short book.......1999-12-21
I believe this book is transcribed from a speech given by Holmes to a group of lawyers, judges, scholars at HLS. It is Holmes' prediciton for the future of the law and it is extremely prescient. For anyone interested in the law it is a must read, and at about 34 pages a very quick and enjoyable one.

Elbert Hubbard wrote this literary trifle in one hour after supper. Its management advice is both timeless and provocative. In the 102 years since it was written, more than 40 million copies have been distributed.
Download Description
This literary trifle, A Message To Garcia, was written one evening after supper, in a single hour. It was on the 22nd of February, 1899, Washington's Birthday. And on an order of the Mikado, a copy was given to every man in the employ of the Japanese Government, soldier or civilian. Over forty million copies of A Message To Garcia have been printed. This is said to be a larger circulation than any other literary venture has ever attained during the lifetime of an author, in all history. Please Note: This book has been reformatted to be easy to read in true text, not scanned images that can sometimes be difficult to decipher. The Microsoft eBook has a contents page linked to the chapter headings for easy navigation. The Adobe eBook has bookmarks at chapter headings and is printable up to two full copies per year. Both versions are text searchable.

A Message to Garcia is "A RIP OFF".......2007-09-21
The book is totally worthless. It is exerpts from Lord knows where. The book is 18 5"X8" pages of whatever followed by 28 blank pages. I cannot believe an honest dealer would even carry it!A Message to Garcia
An essay is not a bedtime story.......2007-08-08
Some of the comments in here are glaring examples of what's missing in American thought--a study of one's own history, of the evolution of American culture, and an appreciation for concise, grammatically correct, well-turned English.
Elbert Hubbard's little article reached more than 40 million readers worldwide in his own time, by the efforts of others. For anyone to play it down as obscure is to display one's own ignorance. The booklet was deemed worthy for decades after his death in 1915. Should you bother to read his introduction, which is available all over the web, you might learn as much from the man himself.
You might also discover Lieutenant Rowan's own account, which, if you suspend your 21st Century yen for sensationalism, is an earnest tale of perseverance and dedication. Rowan's account is informative, but his deed is merely the example Hubbard uses to make a broader point. There was a time when Americans could simply honor integrity and accomplishment without the compulsion to ridicule. You will not find value in this small piece by applying a contemporary context to it. Rather, take it as an excellent essay that has stood the test of time far longer than any of us have lived.
It's not about you, it's not about me, it's about a man who lived a hundred years ago and, like the men and women of our armed forces today, performed. Too many civilians have never learned how to deliver, how to do something simply because it needs doing, rather than talk about it. And that is what Hubbard's piece shows--that the weak in spirit are still among us and probably always will be. Unfortunately, several reviewers here fail the man's test in the most embarrassing way.
If you can, look up more of Hubbard's writings. He's clever and adroit and unapologetic. If you prefer political correctness, don't bother, because he lived and wrote before that insipid notion ever took hold. A Message To Garcia is but the most famous of Hubbard' works. Try his "Little Journeys" series for a flavor of America as we embarked on the 20th Century. There's more to the man than this "message" tells.
waste of money.......2007-08-03
To be quite frank, this book is an utter waste of money. More than half of the pages are blank - wasted paper and space. And on the pages that actually have print, the formatting is simply horrific.
An inspirational essay about reliability & tenacity.......2007-05-31
A Message to Garcia was written by Elbert Hubbard in an hour and published on the March, 1899 issue of the Philistine magazine, of which he was the publisher and editor. The essay was originally intended as filler for the magazine and it didn't even have a title. After the magazine was published, requests started coming in for that particular issue and the demand for the essay grew and grew. The essay ended up selling over 40 million copies and has been translated into several languages.
Calixto Iñiguez Garcia was a leader of the Cuban insurgency and was a key person during the Spanish-American war. A message needed to be delivered to him so that the United States could coordinate their strategy with him. Mr. Garcia was hidden in the mountains of Cuba and the US had no means of communicating with him, it was suggested to the President that there was a man by the name of Andrew Summers Rowan that could find Garcia and deliver the message. Mr Rowan, a West Point graduate, was given his marching orders and without questions he placed the letter in a pouch and reached the coast of Cuba a few days later and a few weeks later delivered the message to Garcia.
Hubbard uses the message of the story to illustrate the need for us to be like Rowan: A person that can deliver the goods with no questions, hesitations, excuses or complaints. He goes on to deliver an impactful message of reliability, persistence and tenacity. We all crave to be surrounded by people that can deliver A MESSAGE TO GARCIA.
Two separate messages and one is, sadly, based on a lie.......2007-05-19
There are two messages in this little book and different reviewers pay attention to different ones. The first message is the capability of Rowan who successfully delivers the message showing courage, self-reliance, and initiative--all admirable qualities. The other message is that managers value employees who ask no questions and do what they're told with a minimum of directions. Asking no questions only works with managers who are infallible and leads to employees who can claim "I was only following orders".
Unfortunately, the story that the author provides about Rowan is, at best, a fable and, at worst, a self-serving lie (given that the author is a manager). What actually happened was that (from Wikipedia) Rowan was hidden by Cuban rebels in Jamaica before his being taken to Cuba and was met by 200 cavalry and delivered to Garcia. The reward for his "unquestioning" behavior was that he was held by the British quarantine in the Bahamas for ten days and was given combat command of a company of African American troops assumed to be immune to jungle diseases and who died as quickly as any troops once infected. The war itself killed more U.S. personnel by malaria than by bullets.
While the Rowan of the fable is admirable in all ways, perhaps the manager, and the country, would have been better served if some one had asked some questions about what was being done.
