5 out of 5 stars Best Book I've Seen on the Subject.......2004-06-29

I am currently a third-grade teacher, and I have taught many levels of students, from kindergarten to high school. I read this whole book in two days, and it is the best book I have seen on the subject, as a resource for teachers (and for parents).

The book is divided into three major parts: Creating a Positive Classroom, Helping Victims, and helping Bullies. Each section of the book was equally good. Every section is filled with very specific ideas which would work in almost any school situation, of any level. 95% of the ideas and suggestions would be appropriate for Grade 3, without any modification. The book is also filled with reproducable pages which ARE REALLY USEFUL, unlike most reproducables which I have seen for teachers. Not one paragraph of the entire book wasted my time. Every single page is packed with hard-hitting practical ideas. I also liked the many, many suggestions which can be used for journaling ideas. Some examples: "How would you feel--if you were the most popular student, or the least popular student; if you were the new kid in school; if you wore glasses." Also: "When was the last time someone did something really nice for you? What did the person do? How did it make you feel?" Also: "What do you like about yourself? What are you best at? What makes you proud of yourself?" These are just a few of the 200 or so ideas JUST for writing about, which are scattered throughout the book.

On a personal note, in the part dealing with Helping Bullies, I recognized a family member who is a verbal and emotional bully. This book also gave me some excellent ideas for dealing with this adult.

I just wish I had come across this remarkable and helpful book years ago! I can recommend it to teachers of all ages of children (and parents, too).

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous Resource!!.......2002-11-10

I really can't say enough good things about this book! It is absolutely chock-full of really useful, practical activities to use in your classroom. A must-have!!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful book that all should read.......2002-06-16

This is one of the best books out there that addresses the school bully issue. This book is full of lists and charts that you can use. Although it is targeted for elementary and middle school aged kids, any parent, teacher, or other school official can benefit from this book. Dr. Beane has done some great research, all of which has been put into the writing of this book. He is one of the leading experts in this field, and has a lot of good information. I strongly recommend this book...thanks for everything Dr. Beane, I know the knowledge I've gained from you will be helpful in all of my educational endeavours.

5 out of 5 stars Very helpful guide for dealing with school violence.......2001-11-25

If you are researching the subject of school violence as a teacher or a parent, this book is a good place to start. The author, Allan L. Beane, Ph.D., is a professor in the Department of Special Education at Murray State University in Kentucky. He specializes in developing violence-prevention programs for public schools and teaches workshops on this subject.

After so many years of increasing violence in the public schools, most of us need no convincing to believe this is a vital issue that =must= be dealt with. Though this well-laid-out guide is written with the school teacher mostly in mind, I would not just recommend it for teachers. No anti-bullying program can begin in any school without the administration, teachers and parents working together. So it is important, whichever of these categories you fall into, to know what is in this book.

In the context of the current books that are out there on this subject, this one is excellent and makes a very useful contribution. However, since there are, sadly, so relatively few books out on this subject, to anyone seriously researching this subject, it is highly recommended that you read not just this book, but all the other books currently available (most of which are for sale here on Amazon).

5 out of 5 stars Basic Bullying.......2000-07-25

I am an elementary school teacher and this book covers the basics of bullying in the classroom and on the playground and what the class and the teacher can do to prevent it and deal with it. It also gives ideas on how to cope with bullies in life outside of the school. The book is well organized and easy to read. It has a lot of rules/ideas in graphic organizers for easy transfer to posters. There are a lot of pages to copy for the kids to use to discuss and understand bullying. This is a good book to read to make school a safe place to be.

    Product Description

Periodic, high-profile incidents of school violence both in the United States and around the world have understandably resulted in public demand for increased school safety. This demand has, in turn, led to school safety policies and practices that have raced ahead of empirical research. This situation is now changing. In both the United States and across the world a continuing flow of government-funded research studies now make it possible for schools and communities to implement school safety programs that are founded on sound scientific research. This 41-chapter handbook is the first attempt to comprehensively profile (on a worldwide basis) the emerging field of school violence and safety research and practice. It covers the full range of school violence from harassment and bullying to serious physical assault. It also examines existing school safety programs and the research and theories that guide them. Examinations of current issues and projections of future research and practice are embedded within the discussions. In short, it helps map the boundaries of this rapidly growing, multidisciplinary field of study. Key features of this important new book include: • Balance of Breadth and Depth–Coverage includes 41 chapters that provide an in-depth profile of the following aspects of school violence and school safety: 1. foundations 2. assessment and measurement 3. prevention and intervention, and 4. implementation. • Evidence-based Practice–Avoiding a one-size-fits-all approach to prevention and intervention, the focus throughout is on the application of evidence-based practice to those factors most commonly associated with school violence and safety. • Implications for Practice–A critical component of each chapter is a summary table delineating the implications for practice of the foregoing research. The Handbook of School Violence and School Safety is an indispensable reference volume for scholars, college administration faculty and graduate students, in-service school administrators and safety officers, policymakers, and academic libraries serving these groups. It is also appropriate for graduate level courses wholly or partly devoted to the study of school violence and school safety.

A step-by-step guidebook for advance preparation and early response to school crises

This Second Edition of Preparing for Crises in the Schools arrives at a critical moment. With several recent dramatic examples of school violence and other tragedies afflicting communities nationwide, the need for school districts to take proactive measures-rather than merely react to a crisis-is critical.

This completely updated edition offers practical plans for laying the important groundwork to ensure that crisis response will be both immediate and thorough in the wake of tragedy. Authored by three school crisis response planning experts, it offers advice on early detection of trouble, developing plans and procedures to intervene with youths quickly and successfully, and conducting a school in-service workshop on crisis response planning and intervention.

Essential for counselors, school psychologists, teachers, and administrators alike, this book helps ensure that schools are not caught by surprise when a crisis occurs.

        Book Description

Your school must be prepared to face problems that range from name calling and bullying to extortion, rape, and homicide. Decrease the chances of tragedy and learn how to respond most effectively!

This essential handbook explores the causes of school violence, presents state-of-the-art information on preventing school violence, and arms you with practical interventions to use when violent incidents occur. You'll also learn about the best Internet sites on school violence issues. This book—prepared by the editor of the Journal of School Violence—can help you decrease the chances of tragedy. It will also show you how to respond effectively when violence does occur.

Part I: Causes of School Violence focuses on the ways that connectedness and identification with academics influence school violence. This section presents a framework for creating developmental interventions as well as a chapter examining the concept of "bonding to school," with two interesting scenarios to consider.

Part II: Prevention of School Violence examines the effectiveness of interventions in use today and brings you important information on threat assessment, peer mediation, and weapons reduction. You'll also find an insightful chapter on the value of developing empathy and good communication with youth who are gang members.

Part III: Interventions in Cases of School Violence provides you with effective strategies to address the consequences of crisis events and takes an incisive look at crisis events themselves, what they are, how they progress, and what you may encounter in their aftermath. In addition, you get an invaluable inside look at crisis intervention and support services in the aftermath of the 2001 Santana High School shootings in San Diego, California.

With your purchase of this essential handbook, you'll also be kept up to date by the author's new Internet forum—a space where scholars and practitioners from around the world come together to create new strategies for school violence prevention and intervention and develop new online and print publications that address school violence.

"When I was like 11, I was hanging out. I used to go to a middle school. It was for bad people, only bad people go there. It's a school just for bad people that had gotten kicked out of school. And I had got kicked out of my school cause they found me with a gun."

The Handbook of School Violence brings together many voices—those of violent youngsters and the helpers who provide the care they need—those of students who feel no connection with their families or with their work at school—those of the professionals who strive to prevent these students from acting on their feelings of alienation in violent ways—and those of scholars who create theory and research, laying the foundation for prevention and intervention. Add this book to your collection, and you'll benefit from the contributions of this rich chorus of voices. And through the Internet forum, the chorus can add a new voice—yours.

                Book Description

A handbook for parents, students, educators, and citizens: a clear-eyed collection that takes aim at the replacement of teaching with punishment in America's schools. "Zero tolerance" began as a prohibition against guns, but it has quickly expanded into a frenzy of punishment and tougher disciplinary measures in American schools. Ironically, as this timely collection makes clear, recent research indicates that as schools adopt more zero tolerance policies they in fact become less safe, in part because the first casualties of these measures are the central, critical relationships between teacher and student and between school and community. Zero Tolerance assembles prominent educators and intellectuals, including the Rev. Jesse L. Jackson, Sr., Michelle Fine, and Patricia Williams, along with teachers, students, and community activists, to show that the vast majority of students expelled from schools under new disciplinary measures are sent home for nonviolent violations; that the rush to judge and punish disproportionately affects black and Latino children; and that the new disciplinary ethos is eroding constitutional protections of privacy, free speech, and due process. Sure to become the focus of controversy, Zero Tolerance presents a passionate, multifaceted argument against the militarization of our schools.

                Topics include:
                • Media and anti-youth policies
                • Race, civil rights, and school discipline
                • Student writing on zero tolerance
                • Community agencies dealing with rehabilitation
                • Zero tolerance and mentally ill students

5 out of 5 stars Everyone should read this!.......2004-01-14

Teachers, administrators, parents, and taxpayers should read this book. As a criminal justice student, this was not my first encounter with studies that show corporal punishment, humiliation-based punishments and exclusionary tactics work against rather than for the safety policy makers, board members and principals hope to achieve. Zero Tolerance polices grew largely out of fears of violence associated with gangs, drugs, and school shootings. While none of these things are desirable in schools, none are prevented by zero tolerance policies. School shooters, in particular, tend to be suicidal and thus not deterred by the prospect of exclusion from educational opportunities. Gangs offer family, support, and protection to children who often feel they cannot get such things elsewhere.

What we really are creating with zero tolerance polices is an increased need for prisons, racial and socioeconomic disparities, and a future without hope for a great many students. This book offers alternatives that have been tried and proven, accounts of misuse of zero tolerance policies, study findings showing disparities along race and class lines, legal ramifications and oppositional options.

                4 out of 5 stars School Counselor.......2006-03-15

I'm pleased with the book for use as a School Counselor. I find it best with "higher" functioning students, who have some basic social skills, but even with other students, it's a great resource for lesson ideas. Some of the lessons just need to be adjusted a bit.

5 out of 5 stars Avoid Conflicts Before They Occur!.......2002-09-22

This is a great resource for anyone with children! There are always situations in our lives which can cause conflict. After purchasing this book, I found it to be a wonderful resource to help my children cope with these occasions. Day by day, with over 100 activites and projects, it teaches them (and adults) to recognize a conflict before it occurs, then shows them how to deal with it in a healthy manner. I feel that it will also help them learn the properties of management of their feelings, and their surroundings. Therefore, actually getting them ready to be in management positions later in life. This is a must have for any parent or teacher!
