Customer Reviews:
Theatre Teachers: This Is What You Need.......2006-11-10
This book is formatted so easily, it took me MUCH less time than I thought it would to prepare a unit on reader's theatre for my class. I used it for my high school theatre class so they wouldn't have to concentrate on large vocabularies, but rather to deliver the story in a simple, easy way. It was a HUGE success of a project and this book made it possible. It tells you how long each story is, what cast you'll need, and what reading level it is!! Yay!!!
The stories themselves are entertaining (even for high school!!!), compelling, and really fun to work with. I am SO grateful I ordered this!
A Great Resource.......2006-01-11
Aaron Shepard is a generous contributor to the field of Reader's Theatre. This book is no exception. It's well-laid out and chock-full of interesting scripts. I've recommended to several folks interested in RT.
Clear and Helpful.......2006-01-11
This book was written in clear language. It was helpful to me as a novice.

Book Description
Miss Small, the gym teacher, is teaching A.J., Andrea, and the gang to juggle scarves, balance feathers, and do the Chicken Dance! Is this any way to stay in shape? Whatever happened to good old dodgeball?
In fact, all the grown-ups at A.J.'s school seem to have something wrong with them. What's going on here? What are A.J. and the kids in his class going to do? They've got to convince Miss Small to act her age before the end of the year! Never before has school been this mixed up -- or this much fun. Popular author Dan Gutman pulls out all the stops for this right-on second-grade hilarity.

Book Description
Marian called it Roxaboxen. (She always knew the name of everything.) There across the road, it looked like any rocky hill -- nothing but sand and rocks, some old wooden boxes, cactus and greasewood and thorny ocotillo -- but it was a special place: a sparkling world of jeweled homes, streets edged with the whitest stones, and two ice cream shops. Come with us there, where all you need to gallop fast and free is a long stick and a soaring imagination.
In glowing desert hues, artist Barbara Cooney has caught the magic of Alice McLerran's treasured land of Roxaboxen -- a place that really was, and, once you've been there, always is.
Customer Reviews:
Truly a good story.......2006-11-10
This is a great true story about a bunch of children with wonderful imaginations. My kids loved the fact that the story was true and that they got a glimpse of how much fun the children in the story had without expensive toys.
Warmly Haunting.......2006-05-04
Haunting in the sense that it's unforgettable, from a time and place long ago and far away. I agree with the one reviewer who said it's good for adults, but I also think it's good for children. Adults will zero in on the deeper aspects, of course. Who doesn't have a Roxaboxen in their past? Many of today's children, I'm afraid, have been hurried indoors to safety and will never know a magical place like it.
Roxaboxen.......2006-03-25
This is a great read aloud for a text to self connection lesson. Children can relate to the imaginary town created by children from old crates and rocks.
It makes you want to play........2005-06-01
This wonderful, masterful story celebrates and honors child's play. The quiet music of McLerran's text tells of a hill where neighbor kids made, out of colored glass and round stones, a pretend town with houses and stores. I remember me and the neighbor kids outlining floorplans with swaths of cut grass after the mowers cut the field behind oru houses, which was the grounds of our elementary school. Like that play, Roxaboxen lacks a conventional storyline. Instead, the book is just about playing, about meeting with 6 or 7 of your friends and creating a place and obeying only the streams of imagination.
Cooney's illustrations for this book are among my favorite in any children's book, and they are certainly my favorite of hers, which is saying a lot. Alternately dusky and vivid, full of glossy shade, glittering flashes, autumnal contrasts, her paintings gleam with the magic of this kid-made place and its serendipidous doings.
Plus, the kids are from an earlier age, all elderly now but remembering it as part of their childhood, so the book really reaches across generations, revealing to your child that your own mother and father, your child's grandparents, were once giddy with play, too. The fun of these retold capers and gatherings makes me want to stake out a new field and carouse like I'm 7 again, and what better treat--and honor--can you imagine than reading your child this grinning, melancholy commemoration of their own manner of joy.
An incredible world for kids.......2004-07-13
This was my absolute favorite book as a child: I loved imagining the world of Roxaboxen as the children who 'lived' there did and I loved creating my own Roxaboxens in my world. Alice McLerran's kids taught me how to make my own places and times and adventures in my own universe. The entire book was so beautiful that I still smile whenever I see kid's books and remember my favorite or when someone asks me what my favorite book from childhood was.

Book Description
Lola and her classmates are putting on a play about the seasons, and for Lola there is absolutely only one role for her: the sun, of course! But when Lola is cast as a simple leaf, it's up to Charlie to show his little sister that with the right spirit and plenty of pluck (and a scenestealing costume), even a little leaf can be very extremely special.
Customer Reviews:
Bravo!.......2007-07-12
Another hit from Charlie and Lola! This is one of our favorites from the sticker collection. I only wish that there were more books (without the stickers) because my 2 year old is a bit young to fully appreciate the stickers. We read it like a regular book, and have taped the stickers in place (to keep her from curiously tearing them off again, which undoubtedly leaves her in tears). A good value for the money if you are looking for more Charlie and Lola to satisfy a little one who adores them, like mine does.
Fun Activity Book.......2007-03-29
My daughter 3.5 years loves the Charlie and Lola TV show and books so it wasn't a huge gamble that she would enjoy this sticker book. She spent several hours coloring and sticking the stickers. I would definitely recommend this as a road trip activity.
If you have a Lola in your life........2006-08-10
If you like the Charlie and Lola series then you won't be disappointed in this book. The book is based on the episode "I am the Sun" in which Lola wants to be the sun in the school play and ends up as a leaf and through Charlie's help learns to love being the best leaf. It's a wonderful read along and the stickers make the story more interactive. My only complaint would be is that the story is a more condensed version of the show and certain things my daugther remembers from the show are not in the book. It's still a great story and the illustrations and writing style are hard to beat. It's a true find for $5.00, you get the story and the stickers and a lot of fun time with your child.

Customer Reviews:
Recess Mess.......2006-06-10
The title and the cross-legged kid on the cover make the "mess" seem like an "accident". In reality, I think mess was chosen for the title just because it rhymed! The title confusion aside... nice book for very young, just learning, readers. The text is very simple and is matched by the basic illustrations, so children can learn words like "jumps" by relating the word to the picture - just like Sam!
During recess, Sam has to go and finds his way to the bathroom doors - side by side, with "Boys" and "Girls" written on them... only he can't read! He finds a solution to his problem and learns to spell his first couple of words.
One reviewer mentioned that the amount of text on the last few pages might be a little discouraging to young readers, and that may be but I think there's an up-side to that as well - the rhymes on a few pages are so far apart that young ones lose track of them! With more words on one page, the rhymes are more obvious. Well worth the price to get your preschooler hooked on reading!
First Grade Friends: Recess Mess.......2006-03-15
My grandson enjoyed this book because it went along with his first grade
reading lessons. It's exciting at 7 yrs to find a book that you can really read.
The illustrations were excellent.
Easy to read book about school events........2000-05-18
This is good book for emerging readers. A lot of the simple words are repeated, making it easier for kids who are learning to read. Rhyming text also helps early readers. Most of the pages have just one or two sentences, but the last few pages suddenly have more text. It can be a bit discouraging for kids who were doing great reading on their own to suddenly have more trouble on the last few pages, when they are so close to the end! Kids enjoy reading about common school dilemmas- in this case, all the kids are out on the playground when a boy has to use the restroom- but he isn't sure which is the boy's room. There is nice mix of races in the illustrations and one child in a wheel chair.

This is such a cute book! It has so many of those rhyming double words that we use everyday. It's a very fun read aloud. I teach second grade and my students just love it. The words are in a bigger print, so they love to try and read along. Sure to bring smiles and giggles to everyone!
Kids love it!!.......2007-07-24
My children (ages 4-9) love this book. They have me read it over and over to them and they enjoy it the lastest time as much as the first! Make sure you are up for a verbal workout on this one! You will be reading in circles (literally). I recommend this book to families who enjoy a silly book.
Kids Love This Book.......2007-06-09
I just read Double Trouble in Walla Walla to a class of third graders last week and they loved the play on words, especially the page where the words go around in a circle. Also, the illustrations are fun and add to the word play. I highly recommend this book for children from preschool to third grade.
Double Trouble in Walla Walla.......2007-02-13
I purchased this book after my child brought it home from the school library. It mentions just about all the silly words that we use in our everyday use, such as: chit-chat, nitty- gritty, etc. I was astonished at just how many we use. The story has you reading them together and its fun to try and read them fast. Any child of any age would love it. I got two extra for my sister and brother's kids. enjoy!

Book Description
How do you keep a crowd of energetic young penguins entertained? Put on a play, perhaps? But will they pay attention through an entire performance? If Tacky's center stage, they might. Even in his flowing blond wig and little red "skipping shoes," everyone's favorite misfit penguin imbues the character of Goldilocks with his own indomitable personality and style. So what if the set is in shambles? This is one performance Mrs. Beakly's students won't soon forget.

A goofy and very silly book.......2004-08-11
It's time for the penguins to put on a play for Mrs. Beakly's School; Goodly, Lovely, Angel, Neatly and Perfect are all ready, but they're all worried about Tacky (he's the penguin in the Hawaiian shirt). With no practice or preparation, on the day of the play Tacky dons the Goldilocks outfit and flounces onto the stage. It's an absolute disaster...and the best play the rambunctious young penguins have ever seen!
I had this book in reserve, waiting until my baby got old enough to read to, but when my little nephew needed entertaining I dug it out. Well, he loved it! Yes, this is not a nice, uplifting story with a moral. Instead, it's a goofy and very silly book, one that is sure to please a little one with a sense of humor.
Could be better.......2004-04-12
Not funny or interesting enough. Kind of cute but could be cuter and not a wordy.

Cam Jansen & the School Play Mystery.......2007-05-22
The book I read was about a detective girl named Cam Jansen. There was a play called Honest Abe Lincoln. It was about Abe Lincoln. Emily and Shawn were selling tickets in the cafeteria. They went to get a soda from a boy selling foods and drinks. When they came back there was only two dollars in the shoe box, so they told the director of the show. After they told the director, they asked Cam to solve the problem. She called the police to come and help her. They all met under a big tree on the playground. They asked a boy under the tree if he knew who stole the money but he said he did not know. He said to ask the basketball players if they knew. They all said they did not know who stole the money. There was one more person left on the playground it had to be him. They asked him if he stole the money he said yes and that he was sorry for taking it. I did not like this book a lot because it was very boring.
