An April 2007 Significant 7 Editors' Pick: Funny, engaging, and oh-so-practical, Send is the ultimate etiquette handbook for email, making David Shipley and Will Schwalbe the "Miss Manners" resource for the digital age. Full of practical insights, Send is an invaluable resource for anyone who uses email, and is guaranteed to help you "think before you click." We are not the only fans of this important book. We asked psychologist, science journalist, and bestselling author Daniel Goleman to read Send and give us his take. Check out his exclusive guest review below. --Daphne Durham

Guest Reviewer: Daniel Goleman

Daniel Goleman is an internationally known psychologist who lectures frequently to professional groups, business audiences, and on college campuses, and is the author of many bestselling books, including Emotional Intelligence and most recently, Social Intelligence.

Poor Michael Brown. During the darkest days of the Hurricane Katrina debacle, Brown, then director of FEMA, the agency that so badly bungled the rescue efforts, sent this email: "Are you proud of me? Can I quit now? Can I go home?"

Emails can come back to haunt us--any of us. Few among us have mastered this medium, and only slowly are we realizing its dangers.

From the earliest days of email people "flamed", sending off irritating or otherwise annoying messages. One explanation for the failure to inhibit our more unruly impulses online is a mismatch between the screen we stare at as we email, and the cues the social circuits of the brain use to navigate us through an interaction effectively: on email there is no tone of voice, no facial expression. When we talk to someone on the phone or face-to-face these circuits would ordinarily squelch impulses that will seem "off." Lacking these crucial cues, flaming occurs.

It's not just flaming--I've sent my fair share of emails that were, in retrospect, embarrassing, too familiar or formal, or otherwise wrong in tone. Email invites these lapses in social intelligence in part because the social brain flies blind. In the absence of the other person's real-time emotional signals we need to take a moment to shift from focusing on our own feelings and thoughts, and intentionally focus on the other person, even in absentia, and consider, How might this message come across?

The peril of being off-key is amplified by the temptation to hit SEND prematurely: before we've thought it over and had a chance to ease up on that too-stiff tone, drop that bit of sarcasm, and remember to ask about the kids.

In the old days of letter writing--a dying art--we had plenty of time to rewrite before sealing the envelope, and so flaming letters were far more rare than red-hot emails. And so the brave new world of email could benefit from a civilizing force, a voice that articulates the ground rules online.

Enter Send: The Essential Guide to Email for Office and Home, a new book by David Shipley (an old friend of mine) and Will Schwalbe. Send not only articulates the way to win--or keep--friends online, but offers practical tips on both email etiquette and on the writing style most suitable.

In this witty and wise book Shipley and Schwalbe give essential guidance on vital matters like the politics of using Cc (nobody likes to be left out); when to just reply and when to "Reply All"; the danger of the URGENT subject (too many and you cry wolf); fine-tuning your greetings to fit the relationship (if you use the wrong one, you can lose them at hello); how best to apologize online (put the word 'sorry' in the subject or else the email may never be read).

But Send is far more than Miss Manners for the Web; it's brimming with fascinating insights. For example, now that email has become the way we talk, showing up in person has added impact as the ultimate compliment, signifying that the person, meeting or project has special importance for you.

Years ago a slim volume by Strunk and White, The Elements of Style, laid out the ground rules for good writing; the book became a bible for authors, widely known just as "Strunk and White." Send should make Shipley and Schwalbe the "Strunk and White" for the Web. --Daniel Goleman (www.danielgoleman.info)

Book Description

When should you email, and when should you call, fax, or just show up?

What is the crucial—and most often overlooked—line in an email?

What is the best strategy when you send (in anger or error) a potentially career-ending electronic bombshell?

Enter Send. Whether you email just a little or never stop, use a desktop or a handheld, here, at last, is an authoritative and delightful book that shows how to write the perfect email—at work, at school, or anywhere. Send also points out the numerous (but not always obvious) times when email can be the worst option and might land you in hot water (or even jail!).

The secret is, of course, to think before you click. Send is nothing short of a survival guide for the digital age—wise, brimming with good humor, and filled with helpful lessons from the authors’ own email experiences (and mistakes). In short: absolutely e-ssential.

If you enjoyed the arched-brow humor of Eats, Shoots & Leaves: The Zero Tolerance Approach to Punctuation, then you'll enjoy "Send." It's an elegant, fun guide to something that seems so simple, but is actually pretty complicated: using email effectively.

5 out of 5 stars Help for today's communicator.......2007-09-30

Hello reader

I have found the help I need at last.

In my workplace people write an email rather than picking up the phone or turning around and talking to the person at the next desk.

Is this the same for you?

And do you find it leads to confusion and endless chains of communication on simple matters?

Here is your solution.

Read it and keep it for reference.

No need to reply.

Regards
David

4 out of 5 stars Send: The Essential Guide to Email for Home and Office.......2007-09-29

Easy to understand even if you are not too computer literate. Would have been helpful to be able to read a paragraph or two before purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Learned what I didn't know I didn't know.......2007-09-26

This is an easy read with lots of great info packed into a small volume. The authors' credentials are hard to beat, and the info is laid out in categories making it easy to go back and reread. I learned many things I didn't know about email etiquette (not just no caps!) and the reasoning behind it. They talk about overuse of attachments (I'm guilty!) and other problems I never thought of as a problem. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars EVERYONE, and I mean EVERYONE should read this book.......2007-09-25

Some of the reviews below are correct, this book is simplistic. But unfortunately, most people have lost all sense of etiquette when it comes to email as the book suggests.

Email has become a disgraced form of communication that few people know how navigate properly, and those that do, could certainly stand to become better.

I am buying this for all of my coworkers, family, and friends for Christmas...if only for selfish reasons that it will make my work and home life more productive.

4 out of 5 stars Powerful Business Guide for Network Success.......2004-06-21

Finally someone has written a book on computer networking for the man/woman who signs the check rather than the network technician.

While there are hundreds of books for executives about management style, organization, profit/loss, people selection and marketing. This is the first easy-to-read, easy-to-understand book we've read that tells you how to use technology to streamline your business processes and use the dizzying array of previously mysterious technologies to monitor and control business processes, product/service development and reaching the right customers profitably.

Ms Aber has balanced her technical background at 3Com and Cisco with her practical SMB experience gained involved in a struggling start-up - OneWorld Systems - and modestly successful mid-sized firm - Novartis.

Power-Up Your Small-Medium Business is divided into four logical sections - the value of networking, network basics, advanced technologies and implementation considerations. The network basics section is probably very intriguing to people who tinker and tweak technology, for most business owners and managers we thought it was a lot like reading a book on how your car engine works - interesting but more than we wanted to know.

Because most SMB owners/mangers are more focused on results rather than the how-to, the first section - value of networking - is a good primer on the strategic aspects of the technologies. Forget about having to take a computer science course on how network technologies do whatever they do. Whether you sit at the desk where the buck stops or have to make recommendations that will help your area of responsibility - engineering, manufacturing, logistics, marketing or sales - Ms Aber explores why business people need to use the technology in dollar and cents as well as real business terms.

Since we know enough about the technologies to be dangerous, we skipped to the fourth implementation section because this is where most sales and technical people seem to throw up all the smokes and mirrors as to what they are going to do for you. Again using words that real people can understand she lays out a variety of application scenarios that small - medium business managers can consider.

Her approach is to give you a set of basic to full-blown technology recommendations you can use depending upon your budget. More importantly, unlike most technologists who fall in love with and design/implement a closed-loop solution for you she outlines some technology growth plans you can use.

As a result you don't have to commit to solution A, B, C, D or E but can buy off on solution A/B and have a plan on how you can get to E as your company grows. In addition and equally important she gives the reader an insight into the technologies you may want to consider - wireless everywhere, video-enablement and electronic business-to-business or business-to-consumer - that firms may possibly use to give them a competitive edge in their markets.

Just by reading these two sections a business manager or unit manager has the tools he or she needs to hire someone - internally or externally - to carry out the company's network-powered program.

The reader is well armed with information to know what questions to ask, what to expect, and how to use the technologies once the company has them in place.

The middle sections are really reference chapters. Want to know networking basics? Ms. Aber lays out the areas - computer networks, switching/routing, security, intranet/extranet and virtual networks - so you can understand the concepts. Again she delivers enough information you can actually understand so you know when people are making recommendations that will benefit your company or their profit.

The advanced technology or "gee whiz" section is fun to read. She actually makes it easy for you to understand what is here now and on the horizon that can be used to give you an edge over the guy down the street, across the country or half-way around the globe. It is pretty obvious that Ms Aber thoroughly understands her technologies because she explains them so well that whether you have an accounting, marketing or MBA degree you can do a little dreaming and imagine how the technologies can be used in your organization or by others in your marketplace.

Ms Aber's writing makes dry and dull disarmingly easy to understand.

Whether you head a small-medium size company or are a business unit manager, Power Up Your Small-Medium Business is a good primer and working tool to understand what is out there and available to you as well as what it can do for your company's bottomline.

If you are in one of the ten million 100-1,000 employee firms that have an IT department the book will help you understand what your people are recommending to you, and whether you believe the recommendations will help you reach your goals.

If you are like us and in the majority of American business - 20 - 100 employees - where a network manager has to wear two or three hats, the book becomes even more valuable. Most of us outsource the network technology implementation and have a service person on call...just in case. Ms. Aber gives the business owner the power to understand what the technologies are, what they are going to be and how we can use them to our advantage.

Finally the biggest segment of American business has a roadmap they can read - and understand - about the mysterious field of network technologies that focus on discussing them in business terms, not techie terms.

      Book Description

This book is designed to provide individuals interested in the field of technical customer support a guide to the "soft skills" and the "self-management skills" needed to deliver excellent customer support at the help desk.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent advice on the basics.......2001-04-12

This book addresses the essence of support - people skills. State-of-the-art tools and technology, and the most efficient processes ever devised will not guarantee a successful help desk or technical support organization if the human interaction techniques provided in this book are not used.

Ms. Knapp provides every essential skill in a systematic order. She starts with an excellent, astute discussion on the key elements of achieving customer satisfaction, then begins the systematic process of describing how to develop and use the necessary skills for achieving this goal. This starting point is the most basic skill that is as important to our everyday life as it is to customer satisfaction: listening. This is also a skill that, regrettably, most of us need to continually work on. She gives excellent advice on how to be an active and empathetic listener, and also how to effectively communicate back to the speaker. This skill is reinforced with another that is essential to providing top notch customer support: telephone skills. A telephone, even with the growing trend toward e-support and electronic mail, is still a help desk (and call center) professional's primary tool. Because we cannot depend on facial expression or body language it is of the utmost importance to not only have good phone skills, but to also use these skills in conjunction with listening skills to "read" the customer's mood and adjust our approach accordingly.

Writing skills, the next basic skill that Ms. Knapp addresses, has always been important. This is because documenting issues and actions conveying this to other support professionals who may also work on an incident of case cuts down on unnecessary follow-ups that poorly written documentation causes. Also, this skill is rapidly growing in importance because of the increasing use of e-mail as a customer communications vehicle. The tips on writing given are excellent.

Difficult customers are a way of life. Someone who is frustrated enough to pick up a phone or who feels resentment towards the organization whose products or services you are supporting is going to want to take it out on the first person who answers the phone. Defusing these situations and refocusing angry customers on the issues instead of emotions requires real skills and the ability to subordinate your own emotions. Ms. Knapp gives excellent advice on how to handle irritated customers and, believe it or not, turn the experience into one in which the customer comes away not only satisfied, but a good reference for your product or service. This is one of the most valuable parts of the book and my personal favorite.

The remainder of this book covers problem solving (and prevention) techniques, team building and some great advice on how to relieve stress and keep from burning out. All in all, this is an excellent book that should be read by help desk and call center professionals (as well as tier-2 support analysts), and can be effectively used as a training outline by help desk and call center managers.

Author and consultant Bradley D. Hiquet puts a new and much-needed shine on the old technology-reference-book model in SAP R/3 Implementation Guide: A Manager's Guide to Understanding SAP. Instead of forcing readers down the tedious but often necessary path of configuration commands, Hiquet chronicles the fictional journey of ElectroTech, a manufacturer of industrial electrical components and factory automation products, through its SAP R/3 implementation and rollout. Except for the book's first section, which deftly handles the requisite company, target market, and application overview, the rest is dedicated to this gigantic composite case study.

Assisted by real-life consultants at Conley, Canitano, and Associates, Inc., Hiquet has constructed the book to first address the myriad tribulations of ElectroTech's various departments, followed by an explanation of how implementing the cross-departmental SAP R/3 application can theoretically solve the problems. This approach is extremely effective. First, it provides specific examples of how antiquated and disjointed computing systems can adversely affect productivity and profitability. And second, it puts a human face on the issues. The book wraps up with a brief but informative chapter that outlines pragmatic, time-tested methods to help companies prepare for and successfully complete a SAP R/3 implementation. Sarah L. Roberts-Witt

5 out of 5 stars Excellent final user manual.......2000-07-28

In few words: If you are not a SAP consultant (and you are not expected to be so) and you need to take up working on SAP as a final user next monday: read this book. On monday, this easy to read book, will allow you to show off as an experienced SAP user. The explantions "on the screen" showed by the book let you directly to the outcome you are looking for: to easily perform usual tasks in order entering, price updating, production planning, and so on.

      5 out of 5 stars Pow-Wow!.......1999-08-08

By the time I finished CHAPTER 6 (no worries, they are all very short chapters), I feel as if I have used SAP! It's amazingly simple (yet comprehensive) in its explanation and you don't need to be a technological buff to understand SAP/ this book! Highly recommends this INCREDIBLE book to all out there who have always wanted to know about SAP but have no experience with it!

Also provides very precise step-to-step guide with pictures of the SAP dialogue box. Whoa!

4 out of 5 stars Simple enough for the basics of SAP.......1999-07-08

This book is excellent as an introductory guide that covers most of the modules with graphic illustration. It is useful if you are a new user to SAP or an experience consultant to prepare your training materials. Since the books covers version 3.x, I am expecting a new edition for version 4.x. As usual, this book is weak in IMG (Implementation Guide).

      4 out of 5 stars It's good for beginners........1999-01-20

I loved the contents of this book and the way in which it is presented. Its a good book that starts from the easiest part and increases the level upto implementation. The examples given in the book about business are self-explainetary.

5 out of 5 stars Concise guidence in executing business processes.......1998-12-25

One of the best books in the market that clearly describes execution of the step by step business processes in very simple language using a real life-like scenario. The book also provides an excellent overview of IMG. I would strongly urge the auther to consider writing books for individual functionalities, i.e., MM, QM, etc. with greater detail.

3 out of 5 stars Orgastic read 4 computer nerds, intelectuals, and theorists.......2004-04-16

I accidentally purchased this book on an Amazon review, and was sorely duped.

This is not the book for a beginner or intermidiate looking to set up his home network with step by step practical instructions. This book is better suited for the IT guy in training for a company with about 250-500 employees.

If you have formal computer training, don't mind being inundated with terms like WINS, DHCP, PSTN, CCITT, LSA, NVRAM, NWLINK, and enjoy reading dictionaries in your spare time just for fun, I highly recommend this book.

I guess my strong negative reaction came because I thought I was purchasing a "guide to installing a small office / home office network."

Instead of practical and sensible solutions, I got the extremes in spectrum: Simple explanations like this: "Sometimes the NIC drivers are out of date or they perform poorly, causing windows errors. In this case the most current upgraded drivers for the NIC should be installed." (Wow! Upgrade drivers? Who knew?! Thanks for telling me! I never would have known that!) while the majority of the time I felt like this author couldn't get out of "professor" mode, and is talking to a class that already has months of his lectures already under the belt. ( I'm just glad I'm not the woman married to the man.)

For those that need practical and sensible solutions to building a home network, I found Windows XP home networking by Paul Thurrott much more concrete and even sensually pleasurable to read by comparison. AND GET THIS: I was actually able to build a home / small office network with the Thurrott book.

For those of you on the LQT and don't mind a little PROVO while working your NICNT, I wish you a big UNATKO, and hope you find a little YCORLL on your Xray 818 Charlie Foxtrot.

That's a Roger big 10-4 over and out- cuz' he's got you covered.

        Peace - Out

3 out of 5 stars Not too impressed.......2004-03-22

A decent enough book if you're a beginner Windows user looking to set up a LAN. Otherwise too superficial and Windows-oriented.

5 out of 5 stars Necessary for certification students.......2003-11-24

This book is a necessary addition to your library if you are studying for certifications such as MCSE, MCSA, MCDBA, ORACLE, SUN JAVA 2, CIW, MCAD, MCSD, and so on. These certifications generally test your ability operate (writing programs, installing OS, creating and managing Websites and databases, etc) in a corporate environment with Server machines and Server software such as Windows 2003 Server or Linux. Use this book to build a small but cheap test network to approximate a real corporate network - the principles are the same. Then purchase the Microsoft certification books from amazon - MS PRESS books usually have trial editions of the enterprise level software that would be quite expensive for a poor student. Then study your heart out and be free to experiment as you wish. And yes, I did get my MCSA this way. Good luck!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Networking Text.......2003-07-06

I looked at many networking books when trying to setup my home network. The books aimed at home networking were all too simple, but the corporate networking books were a bit over my head. SOHO Networking addressed everything I needed, including how to use a server on my home network -- most home networking books only consider peer-to-peer networking. I now have a mixed wired and wireless home network running a file server and 5 computers, plus a Tivo Series 2. This book explains everything well in an easy-to-understand style that does not oversimplify.

5 out of 5 stars Today's LAN & Broadband Technology with Eye to Future:.......2002-10-30

This text is a must for anyone who wants to understand, plan or build a SOHO [small office home office] LAN [local area netword] with Broadband Internet access. It will save the reader many times the cost of the book in obtaining the system the first time around, whether he/she builds it him(her)self or contracts a vendor to do the work. The reader will not longer be force to rely solely on salespersons.
Text explains Client/Server LANS and Peer-to-Peer LANS. Various means to interconnecting PCs, hardwired Ethernet Cat 5/Cat 6 cabling to be the connectivity of choice where one can make holes in walls.
Separate and distinct in the Broadband/DSL Connection. And the security issues resulting from 24 & 7 connection to the Internet Provider.
Finally, the text gives a flash view of where all this technology is going.

        1 out of 5 stars Total disappointment........2006-05-26

Very badly organised, error-ridden book. I wasted my money on this. Buy any other Solaris book.

        2 out of 5 stars Crappy.......2003-10-01

What a waste of $40. This book was really basic and did not actually help me administer anything...don't buy it. You can't return the download either....total crap!

3 out of 5 stars not laid out well..........2002-04-27

There is a lot of excellent information in this book, worded well for most people that are unfamiliar with *nix or Solaris. However, in my opinion, the information was not layed out in a logical manner. In the tech world, there are two styles of book - a Read through cover-to-cover book, and a reference book. This book fits neither category - be prepared to jump around a bit to find the info you are looking for.

1 out of 5 stars Save you money.......2002-03-31

This book is very poorly written. The author jumps from subject to subject with no logic. He introduces examples with commands that are not defined and leaves it to the reader to decipher the intent. Subjects are introduced assuming that knowledge that you are looking for is understood.

        4 out of 5 stars Pleasantly suprising.......2002-01-17

I am a Windows network admin trying to learn more about Solaris, and this book suited me just fine. Maybe some of the presentation was too simple if you are a UNIX guru - but this book is definitely for admins new to Solaris. I'm really surprised by some of the reviews here about lack of content - I found each chapter well laid out and easy to read with examples.
