Book Description

"My hat’s off to Jay Bonstingl and his third edition of Schools of Quality for pointing out that quality in schools is a process of working in teams, self-assessment, improvement of systems, and having students actively engaged in their learning through problem-solving tools and the use of data for continuous improvement."
Mick McNiel, Director
National Quality Network of the American Association of School Administrators

Successful schools are built on a strong foundation of Quality. In this book, Bonstingl outlines the blueprints for creating such a foundation and provides practical tools and examples for putting the Quality Philosophy to work at every level. By applying these principles, administrators can have more collaborative and trusting relationships with their colleagues and staff. Teachers can develop their students’ potential to the fullest, enabling each one to succeed. Students get more involved in their work and take greater pride and joy in doing their work well. Parents become avid supporters of the school and are pleased by their children’s improved sense of responsibility.

Bonstingl explains how educators have used the Quality Philosophy to guide strategic planning, communicate more effectively with parents, improve students’ learning strategies, and build a community of learners based on mutual respect and clearly defined aims. The many practical Quality strategies in this book are designed to help educators establish processes that foster continuous improvement for everyone involved in schooling.

This third edition of Schools of Quality includes a new prologue by the author, which not only provides a clear overview of the text, but also highlights the fundamental benefits of enacting the Quality Philosophy in today’s educational environment. In addition, Bonstingl has enriched the contents by incorporating suggestions from readers of the first and second editions throughout the book.

John Jay Bonstingl is an international education consultant specializing in the application of Quality Philosophy concepts and practices to the continuous improvement of schools, businesses, and governments as learning organizations.

Like The Goal, Why ERP? is a short novel about a manager in a furniture manufacturing business who is charged with learning about and implementing a new ERP system, SAP R/3. 5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Introduction to the Enterprise Software Concept.......2005-09-07

I am a Professor in the Management Information Systems area and I use this book as a quick and relatively painless introduction for students who know absolutely nothing about the software that supports Integrated Business Systems. It is an excellent read for that purpose. It focuses on why Enterprise Systems are valuable for some companies, the dangers of blind adoption, the value and power of systems integration, and some of the costs associated with implementing these systems. Just as important, it does this in an interesting way. At least more interesting to my students, who are either dual majors in business administration and information systems or straight majors in some area of business administration. While the other reviewers are correct in their blistering reviews of the book from a technologist's perspective, the book is not written for technologists. As the title suggests, it is a primer and primers are written at the most elementary level.

I have not come across a better book for someone with no knowledge of Integrated Business Systems to learn quickly in 119 pages what Enterprise Systems are about.

3 out of 5 stars REVIEW FOR STUDENTS.......2005-04-21

I read this book as a requirement for my Management Informations Systems class. While it is a dry read, I acknowlege that it was a noble effort to present the information in the form of a novel. Do not read this book if you are an expert on SAP or very familiar with ERP systems. This is little more than a text book put in the form of one large example. Keep your expectations low and you'll be fine.

1 out of 5 stars Why ask why?.......2004-10-28

I picked up this little jewel hoping to learn something about SAP's R/3 product and believe me, it took some serious effort to plow my way through this loathsome tale. The Goal has been done to death by everyone, including Goldratt, and this book is a pale imitation of that classic novel. If you know absolutely nothing about MRP or ERP, then this book might be helpful. It does motivate the need for such systems and production controls in general. The book also has some screen shots of SAP's product, so at least you'll have some basic familiarity with that system before you see it on a workstation. I think I'd rather read the User's Guide to R/3 (or to my VCR) than read this book.

1 out of 5 stars Why ERP? No, really, why ERP?.......2003-11-13

I wouldn't even make paper airplanes with this book - because they would suck too. When millions of books were burned in WWII, why did they miss this one?

Not a good read, pick up The Goal or Better Together instead.

1 out of 5 stars This Book Sucks.......2003-11-13

Why ERP? Because I didn't have a choice as to read it or not. I'd rather take a bath in gasoline and light myself on fire than read this thing again.

Book Description

"This should be required reading by every school administator, every teacher, every board member and all university faculty involved in the training of teachers. There is no doubt that we need to squeeze all blame, all coerion and all criticism out of any people-related business. Not until we realize that schools are in a people business will we ever be able to make meaningful changes."

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Change is hard to do. .......2007-05-20

As I see many of the reviewers here question and doubt the idea of quality schools and choice theory. It has been a few years since I read Choice Theory and Reality Therapy, but I have put the theories into practice in my own life. It is very difficult to let go of the old external control psychology, but it is very possible to make Choice Theory a new habit. Changing the school systems seems like such an enormous task, an almost impossible one. But I think most parents would agree that we need to do something new. There is a reason why Dr. Glasser doesn't go into deep explaination as to how to bring about a Quality School in his book, because he wants teachers and principles to take his classes to learn the theory.

This book is an introduction to the theory not a course in how to practice it. And the one reason I don't think he has a lot of statistical information in his book is because at the time of writing it, there wasn't much to give. I believe it is hard for people to admit what they are doing now might not be the best way to do it, thus they resist anything that might suggest to them change. But if you are looking for some way to change your outlook on life, your happiness level, or you child's schools this book and his others are good investments. These books are unlike any other book you will read in the field of psychology.

4 out of 5 stars Great theory on educational reform.......2007-05-15

An educational consultant recommended this book for me as I was looking at some ideas for changing processes at my school. I think Glasser presents some great ideas, however, I found that one fundamental piece was missing, parental responsibility. Schools can not be solely responsible for the rearing and education of children. While I think Glasser's ideas are excellent for working with motivated children, I'm not convinced that behavioral suggestions would work with children from all backgrounds.

2 out of 5 stars It's All Theory, So.....Who Knows........2006-07-04

For many decades now, Dr. William Glasser has been espousing both choice theory (his theory of human motivations) and the "quality school" (the education model based on choice theory). This book goes a long way in not only describing the "quality school" education model, but in showing how it ties to choice theory.

The basic premise behind choice theory that applies to the "quality school" is the idea that people inherently desire control over their lives. Glasser criticizes "tradidional" schooling for failing to give kids any sense of control over their education or lives. They are given work that they cannot see the relevance to for their lives, told to do it, and given grades as rewards or penalties.

Glasser's solution? The "quality school" is designed as a more cooperative, rather than adversarial, venture between teacher and student. Teachers ask students how they want to learn a particular subject, deadlines become somewhat obscelete (the student turns in her work when she feels it is "quality"), etc.

Now, while it may be a truism that students learn best when working at their pace on their terms - that's what makes this a 'feel good' book - the astute reader will want to see evidence that such a model of education works. It is no exageration to say that these readers will be disappointed when they find absolutely no statistical evidence of the kind in this or any other of Glasser's books.

In the end, that is what makes this book, and so many of Glasser's books, diappointing. First, he adoptes the tone of a salesman througout. He is certainly trying to "sell" us a product. And, like a good salesman, he sways by rhetoric rather than statistics and numbers. Most strangely, he even "feigns" figures. At certain points in the bookk, he will say, "80% of students..." or "20% of teachers..."; surely this beckons a citation. After quoting these "figures" thouugh, Glasser offers no statistics. (The few times he does cite sources to back his claims, he is prone to citing New York Times articles and such - hardly peer-reviewed journals.)

While it may be interesting to read this book and entertain the ideas - I still think there may be something to them - the reader should be reminding herself that all of Glasser's salesmanship amounts to gross speculation and nothing more. This book has a "feel good" approach that (whether consciously or not) was likely designed to have us forget or overlook this dearth of factual analysis. Read the book, yes. But do not forget that Glasser still owes us some numbers.

3 out of 5 stars The Quality School.......2006-06-20

Good overall concept. Rather redundant and begins to feel like overkill after awhile. This book doesn't offer much in the way of example - has it really been put into practice with success? Not sure because it's more preaching than showing.

2 out of 5 stars Lacks Evidence.......2005-10-06

Glasser takes an idea that has some merit and then keeps pushing it long after it becomes unhelpful. Glasser would have teachers quit using rewards and punishments to motivate students. He tries to justify this warm and fuzzy theory by pointing out misuses of rewards and punishments but its hard to understand how he could be blind to productive and fair uses of rewards and punishments that many teachers use. I know a poor teacher that use Glasser's model and a teacher that is good despite using it. If you want more objective research on schooling check out Stevenson and Stigler's the Learning Gap.

        Book Description

A bloody and apparently senseless murder had been committed at Carne School, one of the oldest and most glittering ornaments in the British public school system. George Smiley, whose connections with Carne were complicated by sentiment, had had a curious forewarning of the crime and, in a private capacity, pursued its investigation. Without his espionage-trained insight into the workings of the human mind, Smiley might never have solved the case. But logic and insight were hardly enough to spare him the emotional aftermath of a conclusion he did not want to face.

3 out of 5 stars Hmm, Not What I Was Hoping For..........2007-01-14

Having first read Absolute Friends, by John LeCarre, I decided to go back to the beginning and read all of the author's works in chronological order. The first in the Smiley series was Call for the Dead. In that novel, we learn much about Smiley and get a glimpse into the world of spycraft. In the second Smiley novel, A Murder of Quality, spycraft takes a backseat to an average murder mystery. I look forward to reading the 3rd Smiley novel, The Spy Who Came In From The Cold, because I expect that it will be continue in the same manner as Call for the Dead. I rated this book 3 stars as it is not a bad read. It is simply a read. Not great, not bad, but just a touch above average. This is not a knock on the author's style, as he is clearly gifted. This is more so a knock on a novel that lacks much suspense and intrigue. In a genre (the British Murder mystery) clearly dominated by the likes of Agatha Christie, Dorothy Sayers, P.D. James, Martha Grimes, and the like... this story pales in comparison. I would certainly suggest reading the book if you, like me, are interested in reading the entire Smiley series; however, I would temper your expectations if you are looking for an enthralling read.

        A solid 3 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Smiley is the new Holmes.......2006-08-30

Its a wonderful read! This George Smiley book is of the classic mystery genre. Although the mystery and story itself are quite subdued, there is a lot more to the book than the plot itself. Le Carre is severly critical of the English private school organization and to me it read more as a diagnostic of problems with the organization with a very finely crafted story as the veneer.

If you end up liking this one "Smiley's People" is one you will enjoy even more...perhaps his best work.

The major sports units include traditional activities: badminton, basketball, dance, flag football, soccer, softball, tennis, and volleyball. For each you'll find 10 or 11 developmentally appropriate lessons that progress from beginning to more advanced skills.

The minor units include more innovative activities: bowling, floor hockey, golf, jumping rope, orienteering, pickle-ball, speedball, team handball, and ultimate frisbee. Four to seven lessons for each unit give students a solid introduction to each sport or activity.

The single-day activities include 18 lessons perfect for rainy days or as breaks between the major and minor units. Fun and challenging activities such as bocce ball, cricket, tinikling, and folk dances give students a change of pace and a brief look at alternative physical activities.

          Each lesson includes information on

          • the purpose of the lesson,

          • equipment and facilities needed,

          • appropriate warm-ups,

          • skill cues for students,

          • teaching cues (where appropriate),

          • main activities, and

          • closure.

          Book Description

This book is the follow-up to its immediate predecessor, The Quality School. Based on the work of W. Edwards Deming and on Dr. Glasser's own choice theory, it is written for teachers who are trying to abandon the old system of boss-managing, which is effective for less than half of all students. William Glasser, M.D., explains that only through lead-management can teachers create classrooms in which all students not only do competent work but begin to do quality work. These classrooms are the core of a quality school. The book begins by explaining that to persuade students to do quality schoolwork, teachers must first establish warm, totally noncoercive relationships with their students; teach only useful material, which means stressing skills rather than asking students to memorize information; and move from teacher evaluation to student self-evaluation. There are no generalities in this book: It provides the specifics that classroom teachers seek as they begin the move to quality schools.

5 out of 5 stars Idealistic AND practical.......2006-03-08

I read this and Glasser's prequel, The Quality School. While the first book makes many good points, it is not very useful to the teacher. Glasser appeared to use that book to explain how principles of the quality workplace can be applied to the classroom. This book, The Quality School Teacher, is much more hands-on and gives practical advice on how to get students to achieve quality work. This goes against many traditional methods...some may accuse it of being idealistic and impractical. I believe it is idealistic and very practical. This is one of those books you'll want to keep around and refer to from time to time to be inspired when things aren't working in your class.

I don't understand why the other reviewer gave this only two stars but had only good things to say about it.

          2 out of 5 stars Good reading. . . ........1999-09-23

This book was very interesting. As a student at Byron Center High School, in Byron Center, Michigan, I was required to read this book in a class. Our class engaged in very heated discussions and debates over the ideas presented in this book. I would recommend this book to any school interested in incorporating the Choice Theory into their school!

          Book Description

With places at nursery school promised for every child above the age of four, this book raises the stakes by looking at the quality of what is provided, and how that compares to what should be provided.
Beyond Quality In Early Childhood Education and Care challenges received wisdom and the tendency to reduce philosophical issues of value to purely technical issues of measurement and management. In its place, it offers alternative ways of understanding early childhood, early childhood institutions and pedagogical work. The book places issues of early childhood into a global context and relates them to writers from many fields. Drawing on work with aboriginal peoples in Canada, on the experience of Reggio-Emilia in Italy and on a project in Stockholm inspired by Reggio, the book considers the implications of these alternative ways of understanding, for practice and a reconceptualization of early childhood education and care.

4 out of 5 stars A must for early childhood educators!.......2000-06-15

Dahlberg, Moss and Pence have written this scholarly book to call attention to a crisis of thought in early childhood education. The book is meant to provoke critical thinking of all we know about early childhood education and to rally concerned citizens--parents, educators, policitians and community--to critical discussion.

This book explores early childhood philosophies, constructivist thinking, and cites early childhood "experiments" such as Reggio Emilia and the Stockholm Project. It challenges and inspires on a global level.

I read this book first as a graduate school text, then again as a refresher for my own views on early childhood education. It will be read again and again!
