3 out of 5 stars not enough.......2007-01-23

First of all, be careful, this is not a text book. It has a good presentation for problem solution. First, there are a some solved problems, then supplementary problems are coming. The answers of supplementary problems are at the end of the book.

This book might be useful for beginners. For every topic, there are easy problems, not specific problems similar to case studies. If you are over beginner degree, this book will not be useful for you. Especially, integer programming sections are not satisfactory. For instance, there isn't any facility location problem solution.

To sum-up this book may be useful for a beginner as a workbook.

5 out of 5 stars Doubles as inexpensive textbook on operations research.......2006-04-15

Some of the primary tools used by operations researchers are statistics, optimization, stochastics, queueing theory, game theory, graph theory, and simulation. Because of the computational nature of these fields operations research also has ties to computer science, and thus this outline is useful to people from both fields. OR is concerned with optimization problems in which one seeks to maximize or minimize a specific quantity. The first part of this book is on optimization via linear, integer, and nonlinear programming. Next, network analysis is covered. Network analysis is the general name given to certain specific techniques which can be used for the planning, management and control of projects. Two different techniques for network analysis were developed independently in the late 1950's - PERT (Program Evaluation and Review Technique) and CPM (Critical Path Management). These techniques are also covered in the outline. The next subject tackled is that of inventory models - allowing shortages, allowing price discounts, risk conditions, etc., and their mathematical modeling. Game theory, decision theory, and dynamic programming are all explained in the context of inventory models and forecasting. Finally, there is coverage of Markov chains and queueing theory. Queuing Theory arises from the use of mathematical analysis to theoretically describe production processes along with statistical/probabilistic techniques to account for varying dynamic patterns within the stages of a productive process. The problem to be met is simply entitled "congestion", what happens when a system does not operate smoothly or efficiently.
I really liked this Schaum's outline, and I used it to teach myself most of the mathematical processes covered without the need for any additional resources. The theory is given in small doses along with very illustrative examples. The mathematics starts with simple algebra and works up to nothing more complex than probability and statistics. I highly recommend it for anybody enrolled in an operations research class as well as computer scientists and mathematics students that are studying any subset of the topics covered in this book.

3 out of 5 stars Solved problems book.......2001-06-13

Originally the book of Richard Bronson(1982) was very useful for the solution of simple problems, then a difficult one, but it is always required a text book accompany this. The students of my classes need all the time solved problems to practice.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An invaluable, practical guide for students & practitioners.......2002-07-08

Organisational Research Methods is an invaluable, practical guide for both students and practitioners in the social sciences. This book is particularly unique as it provides the theoretical/academic bases for research yet translates these into practical steps for how to undertake best practice research. The authors highlight a plethora of issues that researchers themselves may not have considered, and provide constructive advice for addressing each possible problem that may arise during the course of a research project. Based on their expertise and experience as both practitioners and academics, the authors provide helpful examples throughout the book that assist the reader in applying the knowledge directly to their own project.

Taking the reader step-by-step through all stages of conducting a research project, the book begins with an introduction to organizational research, followed by steps for applying social science to the `real world'. Readers are taken chronologically through the stages involved in a research problem, including: starting the project, project design, data collection and data analysis. The book is particularly valuable for students and practitioners as it goes beyond the traditional themes addressed in research books, and provides advice on practical issues that are rarely discussed. Such issues include: obtaining organizational access, sampling considerations, assessing performance in organizations and, of particular use to researchers relatively new to the field, how to report research findings for both academic publications and for clients. Each section is concluded with a number of key references for readers, and an extensive glossary ensures all terms are fully explicated.

Organizational Research Methods discusses both qualitative and quantitative research methodologies. Each method is addressed in terms of its appropriateness and usefulness for particular research questions. The ongoing question of `What is best practice qualitative research?' is addressed through discussion of both reliability and validity measures for different qualitative techniques, with guidelines for `how to' and `how not to' conduct qualitative research. Discussion of quantitative techniques is clear and systematic enough to be accessible to beginners, yet sophisticated and thorough to the extent that it additionally provides valuable advice for experienced quantitative researchers and statisticians.

This book is an invaluable resource to all students and practitioners in the social sciences. Addressing each of the core areas of organizational research, the authors successfully integrate the approaches adopted in both academic research and applied organizational study. With such a comprehensive picture of research methods, readers are immediately able to adopt this knowledge and expertise to conduct best practice organizational research.

5 out of 5 stars Statistics 001: For Educators. .......2006-09-19

I taught a section on statistics to educators back in 2001 and the textbook we used was a "statistics without the statistics" coursepack which failed to satisfy anyone. I am certain, however, that if I had Dr. Creighton's Schools and Data, my students would have felt more comfortable and learned a great deal more. With its specific examples for the schools and lack of jargon this volume definitely fills a need in regards to ubiquitous Ed School quantitative research syllabi. It not only explains statistics like t tests, z scores, and correlation coefficients, but it also provides excellent rationale for where and how they should be used in our schools. Such illumination is most welcome as many teachers-to-be think statistical measurement is a waste of time. Dr. Creighton shows readers exactly how to use the SPSS and GB-STAT programs--down to the exact functions to enable and click--which will make performing calculations and determinations far easier than most people expect. We live in a time wherein the public is gradually starting to discover the importance of the phrase "research based" so a book like this is invaluable as a means to bettering the education of children as it helps to separate the good from the trendy when it comes to instructional method (not to mention all the other ways in which statistical analysis could improve the functioning of the schools as well). It was an excellent buy.

"This book is an essential tool in the effort to construct teaching on a foundation of thought and care. Rejecting the simple, connect-the-dots view of teaching so prevalent today, Nancy Dana and Diane Yendol-Silva invite us into a world of teaching that is deeply intellectual and fundamentally ethical. They show us how to achieve this, offering practical, concrete steps any teacher or group of teachers can decide to take as they work to transform what they already do informally and privately into something intentional, systematic, and public."

        Book Description

How do you start a research project? What are the hallmarks of a successful research project? These questions are answered in this practical step by step guide to doing a successful research project. This book systematically explains, in a clear and structured way, the theory of and approaches to research while at the same time helping the student//practitioner to develop the topic of their research and acquire the necessary research skills to undertake the successful completion of a research project. It encourages the formation of critical analysis, rigour and independence of thought, fostering individual judgement and skill in the application of research theory and methods. It also develops the crucial skills required in writing research proposals, reports and theses. The particular strength of this book are the way it combines the explanation of practical and theoretical aspects of research directly with the progressive development of the reader's ideas about their individual research topic. It always refers to the researcher's subject of study - no dry theorising which is difficult to relate to individual research interests. The book is divided into chapters with explicit objectives, requiring the researcher to apply the aspects of research they have learned in each chapter to the next stage in developing the proposal. It uses a direct approach leading the reader step-by-step through the book with engaging self assessment exercises to reinforce and develop understanding.

        Book Description

This book provides a concise source of information on effective and practical methods for constructing simulation exercises for the assessment of psychological characteristics relevant to effectiveness in work organizations. Simulation exercises present the examinee with descriptions of complex situations that stimulate aspects of real-world settings and problems. Examinees are required to demonstrate overt behavior in handling the problems presented. The process and/or products of this behavior are observed by trained assessors who observe behavior, classify behaviors into relevant dimensions, and evaluate effectiveness. Simulations can provide assessments of abilities, skills, and competencies not readily measured by other testing techniques.

Developing Organizational Simulations provides practical guidance for defining the attributes to be assessed, constructing the stimulus material, and designing methods for administration and scoring. Several different situational exercises are presented, including business games, leaderless group discussions, in-baskets, one-on-one interaction simulations, and case studies/presentations. Steps to ensure the reliability, validity, and legal defensibility of assessments from simulations are described. In addition, the book presents the use of simulation exercises for the purposes of personnel selection, training, development, and certification. Professional standards and guidelines relevant to the construction of simulation exercises are also covered.
