Book Description

With its balanced approach to reading instruction, Reading and Learning to Read, 5/e, remains a comprehensive, active learning tool that encourages students to teach reading in ways that are both meaningful and reflective. Rather than emphasizing a traditional skills-based approach, this book focuses on teaching skills within a meaning-centered approach. This includes an emphasis on literature-based reading instruction, the integration of technology into the teaching of reading, and the integration of reading and writing instruction. This book continues to promote a contemporary, balanced approach to teaching reading and writing with a renewed emphasis on integrating technology, accommodating the needs of diverse learners, and teaching the middle school young adolescent. Given the increasingly focused interest on literacy standards in the teaching of reading world-wide, this edition also highlights practical examples and references that exemplify the International Reading Associations Standards for Reading Professionals. User friendly marginal icons highlight each of these new features, making them easy to locate for classroom discussion. Additionally, this updated edition features a new section in each chapter that discusses pertinent issues regarding struggling with readers, a recurring concern of classroom teachers. Web sites are also included at the end of each chapter that direct the reader to online practical resources on a variety topics. Designed for anyone interested in elementary reading methods, reading in the elementary school, and developmental reading.

4 out of 5 stars Reading and Learning to Read.......2007-09-09

A concise text explaining everything an educator needs to know to develop and expand a literacy program.

4 out of 5 stars refreshing and up to date.......2006-06-29

I found this book very useful. It helped me make the transition from teaching English as L1 to English as a Second Language. The text contains many strategies and activities that have proven effective and can be applied to ESL and is also useful for teachers reviewing for their certification exams.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Reading Instruction Beginners Book.......2003-10-24

This is one of the most comprehensive and interesting books I had ever come across in my educational career. The authors not only teach the basics of reading instruction, but put forth a plethora of differing strategies/methods for application in the elementary and middle grade classrooms.

4 out of 5 stars Great resource for future teachers or parents!.......2000-06-03

This book is written very well and is very informative. I found this book to be a great tool for teachers. I read this book for a class and I felt that it kept my interest and made for easy reading material. This book provides parents and/or teachers with insight on how to help children learn to read. This book also includes many great activities and strategies to use to strengthen and encourage literacy (no matter what age the student is). I have tested many of the activities on students myself, and found that it made teaching and learning to read more enjoyable for everyone involved. Overall, I thought this book was great. I plan on keeping it as a resource in my classroom or even in my own home.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-10-22

This book is a fantastic way to teach a child to read. My daughter was having a difficult time understanding phonics and had no interest in educational computer games (like Starfalls) I was worried she would never read. She is currently on lesson 50 in the book and is already reading so many words. We do 4 lessons a week from this book and then do one or two of the Bob books on the off nights. Every 20 lessons I have written a message in the book for a special treat which helps motivate her to do her lessons when she is tired from a long day. I will say the lessons do take longer when the children begin reading paragraphs. . .sometimes we will take 40 minutes on one lesson. However, in the beginning, the lessons did take only 10-15 minutes! I can't recommend this book enough, it is fantastic!!!

5 out of 5 stars working wonders!.......2007-10-20

I was told about this book by a friend of mine who raved that it had helped her oldest daughter learn to read and excel at the tests given in the first grade. I bought it so that I could begin to teach my 4-year old. I am a stay-at-home-Mom and my daughter is not in pre-school. After only 28 lessons she is starting to really get the hang of the process, and can sound out all of the words presented to her in each lesson. I am really impressed with the program that this book presents. My daughter looks forward to doing her daily lesson, and has begun to read and recognize words outside of the workbook. What a great way to spend time with your child and teach them a new skill at the same time!

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Resource.......2007-10-05

I am now teaching my third son to read using this book. The process is so easy and effective.

5 out of 5 stars Intensive phonics -- worked for us!.......2007-09-12

I use this book with my homeschooled daughter, age 5. Despite the cheesy title, it has worked well for us. They say that once a child is done with all 100 lessons, they should be reading at a solid second-grade level. I believe that is accurate. We completed lesson 95 today. The lessons take anywhere from 10-30 minutes.

I strongly believe that a strictly phonics-based method makes sense. Teach Read is based on the SRA phonics method that I remember using as a first grader.

The introductory material for the teacher was incredibly helpful. I believe it is important to read these instructions and follow them carefully. I wonder if some who did not think the program worked for them skipped this.

It is an entirely scripted program which I thought would be overkill, but it was helpful. Once I learned to use it I made my own adjustments as needed.

It does not assume the child knows anything to start, not even the alphabet. Of course if the child does know letters and sounds, he or she can progress more easily.

What I like most is that it painlessly took us through some phonics rules, without either of us ever realizing we were learning "rules." I've seen some programs say, "OK, now we're going to learn that when two vowels are together, the first one makes the sound." That makes it sound harder than it is. This just demonstrates it, so it's much easier.

It starts with basic letter sounds, then progresses to blends, digraphs, etc. (again, without ever telling the child they're about to learn blends and digraphs). It goes through the entire process of sounding out words without it ever seeming like work. Children are rewarded at the end of most lessons with a story they can read themselves, very early on. I've read in reviews some people complaining that the stories are silly, but it has appealed to Addy. They're better than the "Pat the rat sat on a mat" type. Once they read the story, they get to see a picture illustrating the story. For Addy, that seems like a neat surprise at the end of each lesson so she looks forward to the next. I will say that the lessons can seem tedious at the end, but we have taken what works for us and ignored parts that were tedious. For example, the program teaches reading comprehension along with the mechanics of reading. Once I was convinced that Addy did fully comprehend the story, I found no need to pepper her with questions to test her understanding.

Teach Read also teaches handwriting as part of every lesson. We use something else for that, so we have skipped that part since about lesson 15. If she weren't a lefty with a specific issue I was attempting to correct, I probably would have stuck with the Teach Read handwriting.

Others have mentioned the invented orthography in this book. I, too, was concerned until I gave the program a chance. It introduces it for good reason, then gently and seamlessly weans the child from it. I would not recommend starting this book and quitting partway through. That would indeed be confusing. However, once it is followed through the system works.

My 5-year-old is reading as a result of this book and our homeschooling efforts. As we finish the book, we're moving on to the next step suggested in Teach Read. Addy is reading real, good-quality books. A list of 20 titles is suggested as a start.

HELPFUL HINT: I took this book to my local copy shop and had them trim off the spine and put a spiral binding on it. It cost just a few books and made the book lay nicely while using.

4 out of 5 stars How I learned.......2007-09-11

I learned to read with this book when I was four, almost five. Excellent. I didn't find it too boring at all. I had already tried other systems and I had been feeling really frustrated. This book took the frustration away. After practicing with some intermediate material for a few months after finishing this book, I was reading chapter books (as a five-year-old) at a fifth grade level. So I went from struggling and not really reading much, and hating it, to reading chapter books with relish, within about 7 months all in all.

I do remember my mom found some typos and mistakes in the book but it wasn't a big deal at all. We followed the book at our own pace, sometimes doing a few lessons at a time, sometimes skipping it for a while. Whatever you do, don't force it on your child before they're ready.

I am now purchasing this book for my own son who is three. Is he ready to read yet? I don't know, but he says he wants to learn to read, so we'll see. I'll be back later to share how that goes. :)

5 out of 5 stars A Trait Above the Rest.......2007-06-27

This book will definitely aid in developing your 6 + 1 writing classroom. It is filled with classroom ideas and great picture books to use to enhance each lesson.

5 out of 5 stars Must Have Writing Assessment Tool!.......2007-03-17

This is a fantastic tool for lower elementary teachers. This is how writing should be assessed. This book is a practical tool. It includes practice assessments and lots of student example papers to help you better understand each trait and how to evaluate it. It also includes many wonderful teaching ideas and picture book examples!

5 out of 5 stars Primary Teachers Rejoice!.......2007-01-04

We asked. We pleaded. We begged, "Pretty pleeease." Ruth Culham responded to our request with great enthusiasm with 6+1 Traits of Writing: The Complete Guide for the Primary Grades. And teachers across the globe cheered, "Wahoo!" Finally, a resource book for primary educators who have been searching for child tested ideas that tackle instructional strategies and assessment techniques in one comprehensive book. Thank you, Ruth, for doing a wonderful job of explaining each trait, equipping us with developmentally appropriate focus lessons, and reminding us that teaching writing to young authors is a process in which they need plenty of practice and opportunities, and an extra helping of patience on our part doesn't hurt. This must have book for all teachers - novice and experienced alike - won't be another resource that is shelved after a quick glance. It will be close at hand as it is used throughout the year to help develop the talents of young writers.

4 out of 5 stars caution? .......2007-01-04

I agree with the positive reviews. The concepts and lessons are great. However, this book must be "all the rage" because when I went online to purchase the trade book from the first lesson plan, I could not find it for less than $50! Of course, you can substitute in your own book selections, but if you want to rely on the lessons as written you MAY not be able to find every book. [...]

5 out of 5 stars 6 + 1 = 7.......2006-04-13

I'm sorry, but 6+1 equals 7. Just kidding- I understand why she called her book that. This is the best writing book I have come across for primary grades. Easy to use lesson plans, examples of student work, and book title suggestions all make this the perfect writing resource. If you want to purchase the titles referenced in the book, there is a website that I found that sells them in a set, plus a lot of other stuff: www.whoossmart.com. Check them out!

The author/editor does not follow his own basic rules about an easily read size of type for a READING text. Seems fundamental to me!

The author/editor does not follow basic rules about using different colors/fonts/sizes as a way of denoting major headings, headings, and details.

There's FAR too much information in one chapter for any one student to digest in a week.

It may be quality information, but it's NOT quality page readability.

Restaurants will tell you--presentation matters.

4 out of 5 stars Practical for Secondary Teachers.......2007-06-27

This book was worth the money. It is appropriate for secondary teachers (and many things out there are geared more toward elementary). It has a brief introduction to the theory behind the text in the beginning and then the rest is pratctical, skill-based lessons/activites for English Language Learners. As a language arts teacher, my only minor disappointment was that some of the lessons are geared more toward general content areas like social studies and science, but there is still plenty of good stuff for me to use.

5 out of 5 stars actually helpful for teachers.......2007-03-29

As an ESL teacher, I find this book actually to be useful for my grad school class and my own practice. Pretty happy with the purchase.

    4 out of 5 stars intellsabby.......2007-03-11

This book is a step by step technique just as the title states. Great for any student teacher that needs a clear visual explanation on how to help ell's. For already teachers in the field it is a good refence book to help them focus on how other techniques can be applicable to thier lesson planning.

5 out of 5 stars every esl teacher need this.......2007-01-19

This book is well organized and coordinated with tesol objectives. Very user friendly, this is a must have resource for all ages.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for ELL in Elementary.......2006-06-15

I found this book had great strategies to apply in an elementary setting for all my students.

    Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

5 out of 5 stars Has history been tampered with?.......2007-10-23

Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/RAZQNMXM4M9CL Has history been tampered with? Yes, it has! Did events and eras such as the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, the Roman Empire , the Dark Ages, and the Renaissance, actually occur within a very different chronology from what we've been told? Yes, they certainly did!

The history of humankind is both drastically shorter and dramatically different than generally presumed.

Why is it so? On one hand, it was usual custom to justify the claims to title and land by age and ancestry, and on the other the court historians knew only too well how to please their masters. The so called universal classic world history is a pack of intricate lies for all events prior to the 16th century. World history as we learn it today was entirely fabricated in the 16th-18th centuries. It's likely that nobody told you before, but

there is not a single piece of firm written evidence or artefact that is reliably and independently dated prior to the 11th century.

Naturally, after what you've learned in school and university, you will not easily believe that the classical history of ancient Rome, Greece, Asia, Egypt, China, Japan, India, etc., is manifestly false.

You will point accusing finger to the pyramids in Egypt, to the Coliseum in Rome and Great Wall of China etc., and claim, aren't they really ancient, thousands of years ancient? Well, there is no valid scientific proof that they are older than 1000 years!

The oldest original written document that can be reliably dated belongs to the 11th century!

New research asserts that Homo sapiens invented writing (including hieroglyphics) only 1000 years ago. Once invented, writing skills were immediately and irreversibly put to the use of ruling powers and science.

The consensual chronology we live with was essentially crafted in the 16th century by the Jesuits.

The world history was compiled from contradictory mix of innumerable copies of ancient Latin and Greek manuscripts and other irrefutable proofs delivered by late mediaeval astronomers that were cemented by the authority of writings of the Church Fathers.

Early in life, we learn about ancient history. Children love the magical lessons of history - they are like fairy tales. Teachers recite breathtaking stories; very soon We learn by heart the names and deeds of brave warriors, wise philosophers, fabulous pharaohs, cunning high priests and greedy scribes.

We learn of gigantic pyramids and sinister castles, kings and queens, dukes and barons, powerful heroes and beautiful ladies, emaciated saints and low-life traitors.

Ancient history is based documents, manuscripts, printed books, paintings, monuments and artefacts - called primary sources.

The problem is that neither these ancient documents, nor events described therein can be irrefutably dated, moreover they contradict each other for the most part.

When a school textbook tells us that Genghis Khan in year X or Alexander in year Y, have each conquered half of the world, it means only that it is so said in some of the written sources.

There are no answers to simple questions:

When were these primary sources written?

Where and by whom were these sources found?

It is wrongly presumed that ancient and medieval chronicles, written by Genghis Khan's or Alexander the Great contemporaries and eyewitnesses, are readily available. Actually, only sources written hundreds or even thousands of years after the events are there, compiled mostly in the 16th 18th centuries, or even later.

As a rule, these sources suffered considerable multiple manipulations, falsifications and distortions by editing. At the same time,

innumerable originals of ancient documents under various pretexts were destroyed in Europe under various pretexts.

The names of persons and geographical sites often changed meaning and location during the course of the centuries.

Geographical locations became clearly defined on maps only with the advent of printing.

This made possible the circulation of identical copies of the same map for purposes of the military, navigation, education and governance tasks.

Historians from Oxford say: "hey, everybody knows that Julius Caesar lived in the first century B.C.

`Julius Caesar' statement is only a point of view as

there is simply no irrefutable documentary proof that Julius Caesar or any other great name of antiquity ever existed.

Better than that - extremely rare sources that can be reliably dated back to the 10th-14th centuries A D, do not show the polished picture of classical history.

They show a picture both contradictory and confusing.

All methods of dating of ancient sources and artefacts are erroneous:

Radio-carbon C14 method produces dating with exactitude of plus minus 1500 years, therefore it is too crude for dating of events in historical timeframe!

The Almagest tractate, which lies as corner stone contemporary chronology, compiled in the 2nd century A D by Ptolemy, the founding father of astronomy, contains astronomical data of 9th to 16th century!

The Bronze Age,that has supposedly began 5000 years ago. Bronze is made of 90% copper and 10% tin, but the technology for tin extraction dates back to 14th century A D!.

All eclipses contained in manuscripts, like Thucydides one, relating 'ancient' events have exclusively medieval dating. All horoscopes cut in stone or painted in Egyptian temples, like Dendera have exclusively early medieval dating solutions.

Not quite what you have learned in school? Open your eyes, and, you will find sufficient proof to reach step by step the inevitable conclusion that the classical chronology is false and therefore, that the history of ancient and medieval world universally accepted today, is also false. Have a fresh outlook on everything said or printed about "ancient" and "enigmatic" Roman, Greek and Egyptian, medieval as well as all other "lost and found" civilizations.

Antiquity and Dark Ages are phantoms invented in the 16th 18th and polished in 19th 20thcenturies. Human civilization is in fact barely 1000 years old!

This book will change your perception of History forever!
What if Ancient Rome, Greece and Egypt were invented during Renaissance?
What if The Old Testament was a rendition of events of the Middle Ages?
What if Jesus Christ was born in 1053 and crucified in 1086 AD?
    Sounds Unbelievable?
Not after you've read "History: Fiction or Science?" by Anatoly Fomenko, the genius mathematician.
Armed with astronomy and computers Anatoly Fomenko turns History into a rocket science.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

    5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

      Book Description

In an effective writing workshop, young children grow in leaps and bounds, and within just a few months, the changes in their written products can dazzle you. And after 30 years of studying her students' growth in the writing workshop, Lucy Calkins knows one of the most powerful ways to support good writers: clear, purposeful writing conferences.

In One to One Calkins and her colleagues Amanda Hartman and Zoe White show you the practices and principles that create effective conferences. They dispel the myth that master teachers have a magic touch and show you that effective teachers do not reinvent the conference with each student, but rather use predictable, principled interactions that follow a few simple frameworks. In One to One, you will learn:

Good conferring, like good teaching, relies on your ability to communicate effectively with children, and the skills you develop as you learn to confer will improve your teaching abilities in all areas, including developing curriculum, leading strong minilessons, and untangling the classroom chaos that can derail a smoothly running workshop. Read One to One to improve your conferences and your teaching. But most important, read it to improve your students' writing every day.

4 out of 5 stars Helpful for teaching spelling in a child-centered way.......2007-02-23

This book is helpful for offering a plan to teach spelling through word sorts. The steps are included, as are the words for each sort in an easy to copy format. I have found it useful after giving a whole class spelling assessment to teach small groups using these books. This allows me to better reach each child based on what she/he needs to be taught. I recommend this book along with others in this series! I have three for my second grade class.
