I ordered this book and it came in excellent condition and in a timely manner.

5 out of 5 stars Fowler surfs the waves of educational public policy!.......2003-05-01

An excellent source of information for the layperson or serious student of American education systems. Dr. Fowler explains in great detail a variety of such substantive areas as the meaning of policy; power and education; a discussion of the policy environment; some types of political systems and culture; ideological and value systems; who sets the stage in the making of education policy; the various stages of the policy process and so forth. Enjoyable! Thorough! Substantive!

4 out of 5 stars Educational Leaders.......2001-03-13

This book was very easy to read and understand. Coming from a teaching background, and not knowing anything about policy making, this book was a true education. I used it in my grad class, and every student commented on the ease of understanding and the interest in the text. This is a must buy if you want to learn anything about education, teaching or being an administrator!

    Book Description

This book is a departure from the traditional school public relations text. It not only provides a solid conceptual and research base in public relations for school leaders, it also demonstrates how these concepts can be practically implemented and put to good effect in the school systems. Exercises and concepts are drawn from school life. Concepts are presented, developed, and applied. Case studies that conclude most chapters are based on actual experiences. For anyone interested in public relations and the politics of education.

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars Practical textbook.......2000-07-08

Public Relations for School Leaders is a useful combination of theory and practice. The authors dicuss public relations in the broader sense of building a sense of community both within and without the school itself. They use the case study technique to present practical applications, and the case studies are quite well done. The authors do not always distinquish clearly between a case study and a secton called administrative practice, but that presents no real problem to the student or the teacher.

The final two chapters on building a community relations plan are overly technical and too complicated. However, overall, this is a well written text which will be of use in a graduate program for school administrators.

    1 out of 5 stars and now.....Supercharged Political Correctness!.......2007-09-11

Very early, we are given the author's new rules: references to homosexuality must subsequently capitalize Gay and Lesbian; Native Americans are known as First Nation's Peoples; (there's no comment regarding appropriate contemporary nomenclature for Australian aboriginals or Canadian eskimoes up there beyond the Northwest Territories) and while it may be assumed that African-American references remain appropriate, no dictates are offered regarding African visitors to North America. Spanish speakers and Latin students may wish to continue the use of "neg" prefixed words for black on their own, but don't expect these authors to grant such permission.

The book seems to be aimed at white (U.S.) southern males emerging from Jim Crow Alabama in the 1950s---and gives no credit to today's hard-working educational professionals, throughout the world, of all faiths, colors, and origins who diligently seek to simultaneously socialize and educate youths of all kinds, types, abilities and persuasions.

The book seems strangely unique to North America---vacuous, narrow and not at all what one seeks or expects in an educationally-aimed text. The absence of observation, research and discussion of how to educationally address diversity concerns outside of North America.....that is, the reporting of the exemplary approaches and the worst ones from the rest of the world, is an egregious oversight.

A book on cultural concerns, at this time, might best be aimed at helping us to weigh the responsibilities of schools to teach various social values against those responsibilities for teaching educational basics. This is a complex and daunting task, worthy of true academic research. Instead, we're merely given pontifications that "handouts" are banned, forevermore to be known as resource sheets.

This book is educational junk science at the zenith.

Readers are far better served by studying the works of E.D. Hirsch, Jr. His Cultural Literacy is exactly what EVERY American student needs to know, and I'd make no additions regarding my specific culture's religion, race or social habits to his work.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for how you deal with racism.......2007-03-09

This is an excellent book to really define and review how you deal with the different cultures in your classroom or your school. This book allows the reader to look how you deal with events that you may not be aware that may be prejudice.

    I would highly recommend it.

    Book Description

In October 1964, Ronald Reagan gave a televised speech in support of Republican presidential nominee Barry Goldwater. "The Speech," as it has come to be known, helped launch Ronald Reagan as a leading force in the American conservative movement. However, less than twenty years earlier, Reagan was a prominent Hollywood liberal, the president of the Screen Actors Guild, and a fervent supporter of FDR and Harry Truman. While many agree that Reagan's anticommunism grew out of his experiences with the Hollywood communists of the late 1940s, the origins of his conservative ideology have remained obscure.

Based on a newly discovered collection of private papers as well as interviews and corporate documents, The Education of Ronald Reagan offers new insights into Reagan's ideological development and his political ascendancy. Thomas W. Evans links the eight years (1954-1962) in which Reagan worked for General Electric& mdash;acting as host of its television program, GE Theater, and traveling the country as the company's public-relations envoy-to his conversion to conservatism.

In particular, Evans reveals the profound influence of GE executive Lemuel Boulware, who would become Reagan's political and ideological mentor. Boulware, known for his tough stance against union officials and his innovative corporate strategies to win over workers, championed the core tenets of modern American conservatism-free-market fundamentalism, anticommunism, lower taxes, and limited government. Building on the ideas and influence of Boulware, Reagan would soon begin his rise as a national political figure and an icon of the American conservative movement.

    5 out of 5 stars A 'must' for any college-level collection .......2007-08-09

The Education of Ronald Reagan: The General Electric Years and the Untold Story of His Conversion to Conservatism is a far different portrait of Reagan than typical biographies have covered. For one thing, the focus is much narrower and more specific: for another, it's based on a newly discovered collection of private papers, interviews and corporate documents, and provides fresh revelations on Reagan's ideological development. From mentors and influences on his development to the ideals of modern American conservatism, THE EDUCATION OF RONALD REAGAN is a 'must' for any college-level collection strong in not only Presidential analysis or Reagan in particular, but for those strong in American political debates.

    5 out of 5 stars Watching a President Develop.......2007-03-15

We have a tendency in this country to assume that when a president is thinking your way he is a genius. When he is presenting a position opposed to you; first he is an idiot, and second all his thoughts are really those of his handlers. Then the presidential advisors start leaving and writing books about how brilliant they are and the president just doesn't listen.

It's only when the books come out much later that we really begin to learn what was going on. In this book, the author concentrates on the magical speech that Reagan made in 1964 in support of Barry Goldwater at the Republican National Convention. 'The Speech' was a turning point in American politics. And of course the sarcastic will say that Reagan didn't write it but his handlers ....

This book goes back many, many years and reviews speeches that Reagan gave. From them comes a line here, a line there and in the end we get 'The Speech.' It's an interesting way to look at how Reagan changed from union president heading the Democrats for Truman to fundamentally changing the country's direction. Along the way we learn, Reagan was no dummy. And I think that as history continues to develop, his reputation will continue to go up.

5 out of 5 stars Why Ronald Reagan was the Great Communicator.......2007-03-10

An excellent book and well written. In addition to showing how GE gave Ronald Reagan the opportunity to become a conservative and a great communicator it also provides a fascinating perspective on the battle between business and labor from 1950-1970. This book shows the journey that Reagan takes from being a confirmed New Dealer to a Goldwater conservative.

    Book Description

This self-help book introduces a number of scenarios that incorporate the behaviors supported by the ISLLC Standards. Its effective case scenario approach prepares prospective school leaders to address actual school challenges that occur on a daily basis. In addition, it familiarizes readers with the ISSLC Standards and enables them to conduct a self-assessment relative to meeting those standards. Unlike similar texts, the author provides responses to difficult and challenging issues that are grounded in theory and supported by best practice. This enables learners to examine, compare, and make decisions about well-documented responses and in turn, apply their own ideas. Chapter topics include Leadership in Today's Schools, Organizational Influences on Leadership, Communication in Today's Schools, Decision-Making: Quality and Acceptance, Managing Conflict in Today's Schools, and Facilitating Change in Schools. For education professionals preparing for leadership roles.

    5 out of 5 stars Solid Preparation.......2007-07-23

This book does a nice job of clearly illustrating the ISLLC standards, and was the only preparation resource I used (other than the ETS prep kit) before passing my SLLA test for the CA administrative credential. It is well written, and thoughtfully organized. Especially helpful were the wide variety of senarios. As an educator with primarily high school experience, it was very useful to read examples from K-8. After reading the book, and spending time reflecting on the problems described, I felt much better informed about implementing the ISLLC standards. Without hesitation I would recommend it for those preparing to take the administrative test.

I love this book. It shows me how to apply the standards for leadership in a practical way. It helps me to put the theory that I'm reading into practice. I also like it because it isn't difficult or dry reading. I'm usually very interested in the material.

The book itself is very good. The book is in high demand so you better get your copy as early as possible as you will encounter price inflation due to the lack of availability of the book. Even Amazon got into the rip off game and charged about 50% over the list price.

4 out of 5 stars A highly readable and usable resource.......2006-08-15

Management and leadership issues are interspersed with well-constructed, specific profiles of mediocre teachers. Ineffective and effective supervisory responses are detailed following each profile, making for an instructive contrast. Observation and self-assessment templates offer useful starting points for the particular demands of addressing the needs of a teacher(often an entrenched veteran)who is neither effective nor disastrous. My team of department chairs have appreciated this book tremendously.

5 out of 5 stars the skillful leader.......2002-06-04

Excellent book with short insights into dealing with mediocre teacher. Any administrator who would like practical and up date insight on how to make teachers better teachers should read this book.

5 out of 5 stars RBT has created another indispensable tool for educators.......2000-06-01

I loved reading this book for all it taught me and for all the important things it reminded me of. . . . Arguing passionately and convincingly that supervisors must have competence, conviction, and control, the authors provide the information and the tools supervisors need to help teachers mired in mediocrity, that sometimes discouragingly long stretch of the continuum between the incompetent and the skillful. Absent an uncommon talent for denial, you cannot read this book without being transformed as a supervisor.

The Principal as Curriculum Leader, 2 nd Edition helps you discover how working with teachers and districts can result in more meaningful curriculum for classrooms—and raise the level of learning and teaching in your school.

Allan A. Glatthorn Distinguished Research Professor at East Carolina University, Greenville, North Carolina, Allan A. Glatthorn is a former University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education faculty member. He has served for 26 years as a classroom teacher, district supervisor, and high school principal—and is the author of more than 20 professional books on supervision and curriculum development.

Good resource - explains that principals don't often know that they should be a curriculum leader. One of their jobs is to keep abreast on curriculum - changes, effective teaching strategies, etc. It has been my experience as a teacher that many principals have no idea about what is being taught in the classroom. Some have no clue on teaching strategies to help best meet the standards.

One could choose to 'learn by doing'. Very tiring and stressful. Coaching small group leaders is, not surprisingly, as essential to success as coaching any athletic team. No coach? Enjoy the chaos. There will be blood on the field very soon. It's self-destructive to avoid this resource if a church is hoping to employ small groups. It is as good as the 'Leading Small Groups' book reviewed close by. Forms to use, goals toward which to strive, step-by-step pathways to follow, meeting agendas to fill in... what will you address with your leaders? What are the goals specific to each leader? How does the leader monitor the life of his or her group? What are the personal goals of the leader for 5G development (Growth, Gifts, Good stewardship...)? What are your goals as Coach? Where do you even find a list of possible goals? This is organized, educationally sound, Biblical, realistic. Thank you, Willow.

I've read a "bunch" of leadership books during my 30 years as an Associate Pastor-Education in churches ranging from 300 to 3,000 in weekend attendance.

I would rate the workbook,Coaching Life-Changing Small Group Leaders, in the top 10%.

It's an "easy read" with many practical ideas for not only coaching small group leaders, but for coaching people in both church and secular settings.

Try it! You'll like it! (and you leaders will be glad!)

5 out of 5 stars Sixty Second Motivator.......2007-09-19

This is a great little book. It is written in a light style that makes it easy to read and digest the principles that Jim spells out. If you have ever tried to make a change and been unsuccessful in accomplishing your goal this little book will help you to understand why you failed and how you can increase your chance of success. I found it to be helpful both with my own personal goals and in better understanding what may help to motivate my clients to achieve their stated goals.

5 out of 5 stars It Really Works!.......2007-08-08

Forget the motivational seminars, DVDs, and CDs. This little book has more insights into motivation than anything else I have seen! No hype here.

The author has taken complex concepts and made them easy to understand in an entertaining way. I use the practical tips not only to motivate my patients, but also to motivate myself!

5 out of 5 stars The Sixty-Second Motivator- Book Review.......2007-06-12

Both my husband and I enjoyed this book a lot. We found it to be a neat, well organized little book written in an easy-to-understand, straight-forward style that is genuinely enjoyable while at the same time providing valuable insights about why we do or do not do things. While we found it quite analytical about key factors concerning motivation, the book didn't make us feel intimidated or "preached at". The tone of the book came across to us as friendly, low-key, very helpful, analytical and a valuable "keeper" to refer to in life's future situations.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent read!!.......2007-03-08

This is an excellent read and one book you will finish reading. They say that most poeople don't finish books they buy, but this one is soo relevant to our lives that you will want to read it cover to cover several times! Keeping it in my day planner for a random quick read infusion throughout the day helps keep me on track!!

5 out of 5 stars The missing link!.......2006-09-19

Having read Jim Johnson's No Beach No Zone weight loss book, I knew WHAT to do, plain and simple, and WHY it was important. So why wasn't I doing what the book laid out as a proven plan for weight loss? It's all about motivation. There's even a chapter on motivation in his weight loss book - but this book takes it one step further, into the science of motivation. Personally I think both books dovetail into one another well, especially if your lack of motivation happens to be in the field of losing weight. The science of how to lose weight permanently, and the science of motivating yourself to do anything. Once again, this is all based on research and not what one guy thinks.

One of the best surprises about this book is the way it is written. Without giving away too much, I can tell you that this book is more of a story than a collection of facts, and reads almost like a mystery. One thing's for sure, it's extremely engaging. I read the whole think in one sitting; the research and strategy don't take volumes to explain or lay out. I'm not one to read huge volumes, and Jim Johnson always makes a concise read devoid of medical mumbo-jumbo. The actual motivation chart takes up one page and really makes you think about what makes your own self "tick". The only excuse for not getting motivated is if you aren't willing to give up one hour of your time, and a little more time spent thinking straight.
