Good General Overview.......2007-09-19
This book is required reading in a class I'm taking. I've been through several chapters at this point and one quiz. The book provides a good foundation for later business classes. It takes you step by step through various types of business structures and includes a good bit of detail about nuances that are present in each state. I am business illiterate, and I am finding this book a good primer. It is a bit dry and written from an outline, but I've read much worse. I would definitely recommend this to anybody who doesn't know much about businesses and their organization and needs a good introduction. There is not much about law or about paralegals tasks, mostly just sidebars stating that a paralegal will probably be filling out the forms and info on where to get the forms.

What No One Ever Tells You about Starting Your Own Business: Real-Life Start-Up Advice from 101 Successful Entrepreneurs (What No One Ever Tells You About Starting Your Own Business)
ASIN: 0966963512 |
Book Description
In 1996, Forbes named the Starting and Operating a Business series as one of the top ten best-selling books for small business. Drawing from the state editions, this book covers federal regulations, business practices, tax guidelines, and financing. A companion CD-ROM details state laws applicable to businesses in all 50 states.
Customer Reviews:
Outstanding -- too bad the print version is out of print.......2006-07-12
I bought a used copy after this terrific book went out of print, not knowing that the author now publishes electronic editions for each state. The information in it gave me a good grasp of the "ground rules" (laws and taxes) for running my business, which operates in 3 states, but unfortunately, since it was published in 1999, I wasn't sure how much of the information was out of date. I keep hoping someone will come out with a new edition.
Luckily, my CPA, who has used the books in this series for years, recommended that I get the new electronic editions for the states I needed, which are all updated annually by the author, and I found the three states I bought were not only up to date, but even more comprehensive than this print version (with about 50% more information), plus the best, most comprehensive section on business plans that I have seen, one area that was not covered in this print version.
Even in this 1999 edition, the sections on subjects like Universal Product Codes, ISO-9000 certification, exporting and customs [...], and especially the segment on how to protect your assets from lawsuits and creditors were very helpful, and were subjects that don't seem to be covered in any other books for small business users. (Perhaps other authors of small business books don't think small business people are smart enough to use that kind of technical information?)
In any case, it's too bad this print version had to go out of print, for whatever reasons, and that the new electronic versions aren't available in a printed, bound version (though they were easy enough to print out and put in binders).
All in all, thumbs up!
Great overview, where's the meat.......2003-01-18
I found this book very usefull in presenting an overview of the issues that a business owner will be facing when starting a new business. However, the book never really touched down anywhere, skimming all topics.
Though my appreciation of what it takes is much greater now and better informed, I still feel the need to buy a book delving deeper into the requirements that a business owner must fullfill. I will have to buy another book or get professional advise, as such the book has failed me, it should have been called - An overview of issues a business owner should know.
Good reference tool.......2002-05-31
Not packed with a lot of data, but good reference tool and check list for you to get started and not miss somethings that need your attention as a new business owner.
Great resource. Very useful........2000-02-11
I've relied on previous editions of this book for years. I was very pleased with this new edition for several reasons:
* The resource listings (for gov't agencies, business associations, etc.) have been well-updated and include web addresses.
* There used to be a separate version of the book for each state in the nation--so if you conducted business in several states, like I do, and needed tax and employment info for multiple states, you needed several different copies of the book. This new edition includes all the legal and tax information for ALL states on the enclosed CD-ROM. This is much easier to deal with!
* I should mention that all in all, this is one of the most useful business books I own (and I've got 'em all). It's a no-nonsense guide, and gets straight to the information without a lot of the fluff other books seem to layer on. Highly recommended.

ASIN: 1576752550 |
Book Description
According to author Glenn Solomon, the "at-will" employment rule has undermined economic security and basic civil rights for decades. In this book he exposes it for what it is and tells workers how to maximize their job protection. The rule essentially is that anyone can be fired at any time, with or without warning, for any reason not specifically prohibited by law (such as race). Moreover, it is extremely difficult to prove wrongful termination in court. Solomon discusses exceptions to the rule (government and union workers) and dispels popular myths about employee rights (many people believe they can only be fired for just cause). Although it deals with sometimes complex legal concepts, the book is written in a style accessible to the average reader. Real-life cases illustrate the author's points throughout. Important topics include contracts, discrimination, deciding whether or not to sue, and setting a damage amount. Solomon concludes with a proposal for a "workplace without fear" and replaces the at-will rule with a for-cause standard for terminating employment.
Customer Reviews:
Lawyer coaches workers on real life work problems.......2006-03-09
There are several aspects to this review that I would like to cover.
First, the author seems very credible, with decades of valuable
experience, with real-life situations that he's gone through,
and this is what people need more and more, versus ivory tower,
university textbooks from PhD professors who are out of touch.
Second, perhaps this book will be helpful with the author's
consulting profession, as I would guess that a large amount of
his unbillable, hours wasted was spent explaining the a-b-c's
to the average American worker, who would ring him up, or visit
his office about a labor conflict. This book, I would imagine,
will help greatly the average person in sizing up what can and
cannot be done in legal terms about that work conflict.
Third, the author clearly is more Democrat leaning ideologically
speaking, so it's no surprise that this book is for workers,
and NOT for bosses, or HR Managers or even to kiss up to those
people looking to overpower and maintain tight control over
laborers.
Fourth, it's written in a layman's manner, understandable, and
not disnecessarily or overly complicated, which is the right
way to present the facts - which themselves, are introductory
but essential.
Overall, this is an interesting book for people who don't have
any ideas how the workplace and workers' rights relate to
laws as they apply to workers and employees.
e.g. I hired an employment specialized attorney 2 years ago,
and when I finished reading this book, I began thinking that
the lawyer I had hired was absolutely clueless in matters of
law, and was merely trained in procedural events.
Don't Go Home Without It.......2004-06-14
If you are one of the many that have to work for a living, the information contained in this book is important and a little scary. Easy to understand and written with a laid back humor this book informs you of your rights and obligations as an employee. It contains practical information, suggestions and various resources.
A must read.......2004-05-06
Wow! Check the color of your socks. (Read this book to learn why.) I thought we Americans had job security. Count me among the misinformed. This book will open your eyes. It's full of spunk and spiced with subversion. Read it now!
Read This Book.......2004-04-08
You Could Be Fired for Reading This Book is an important book for anyone with a job. The fact that most workers are employed "at-will" (at the will of the employer) and, therefore, disturbingly vulnerable to losing their jobs is crucial information and not very well known. Author Glenn Solomon explains this basic employment reality -- and how we got there -- and presents ways to combat it, both on the job and if one is fired. With engaging style and wit, Solomon brings his legal expertise to an important subject whose time has come.
As Solomon guides the reader through the reality of being an "at-will" employee, he dispels often-held myths of employment protection and gives guidelines for genuine empowerment. There are things that can be done to make one's job more secure, as well as pitfalls to avoid. And should one lose one's job unfairly (all too common in the "at-will" universe), Solomon gives a step-by-step description of the processes involved in filing a claim. You Could Be Fired for Reading this Book is both an interesting eye-opener and an important resource to have on hand.

A Condensed Guide to Professional Appraisals.......2006-11-18
Shannon Pratt is recognized as an expert in the field of valuation. When he published "Valuing a Business" in 1981, it was quickly adopted by professional appraisers as an authoritative text on the subject of business valuation. Because "Valuing a Business" was specifically written for professional appraisers, it proved impenetrable for attorneys and other professionals who were not well versed in appraisal techniques. Pratt remedied this shortcoming with "The Lawyer's Business Valuation Handbook."
Just as "Valuing a Business" was written specifically for professional appraisers, "The Lawyer's Business Valuation Handbook" was written specifically for attorneys. It provides general information about appraisal techniques and offers advice on how to recognize whether an appraisal is accurate and fair. The book is easy to read and offers several hypothetical models that explain the concepts in detail. This is an invaluable handbook for any attorney who deals with appraisals of land and/or businesses.

Book Description
Let's Talk Patents is patent primer. It explains in short order what small business owners, inventors, and entrepreneurs need to know to protect their ideas and leverage them in this information age. Not another "how-to" book, Let's Talk Patents explains in easy-to-read format such issues as who owns the patent rights, patent infringement and enforcement, and how not to compromise your patent rights. The book also includes a table of the costs involved (including attorneys fees), illustrated examples of patent infringement, and a comparison of patents to trademarks, copyrights, and trade secrets.
This book is targeted for businesspeople, written by a registered patent attorney experienced with the trails and tribulations of small businesses. It is clearly and simply written, avoiding legalese and extraneous information typical of books about patents.
Customer Reviews:
With "Let's Talk Patents" you'll be armed and ready.......2003-05-23
The sub-title for "Let's Talk Patents" tells us it's a patent primer for "Busy Corporate Managers and Entrepreneurs." What it does not say is that it is also a primer for any inventor who would throw off the cloak of ignorance.
Why? Because ignorance of patent law [ignorance: not having knowledge of a certain thing] may lead to unintended forfeiture of patent rights, or worse, being scammed out of money the inventor cannot afford.
Anyone who might be put off by the word "primer" must consider -- where do you get your knowledge of patents now? In High School or College? Not likely. Only a couple conventional colleges in the U.S. even have courses on inventing and patenting. So how does one learn about this vital subject? From TV ads? Advice from a brother-in-law? Some business article or column you read years ago? Unfortunately, the answer is too often, yes. That's a pretty meager education on a subject that may change one's life... Now perhaps a "patent primer" is starting to make more sense? Especially if you would rather not appear too stupid when you do reach that point where you need to talk to a patent attorney.
Let's assume you are a fairly typical problem solver, manager, or free thinker, and maybe even a grasp of the concept of invention -- patent -- money. Most everyone does. But if words or phrases like "intellectual property rights", "prior art", "doctrine of equivalents", "disclosure", or "infringement" are not a part of your vocabulary, you can offer a big Thank You to Ms. Etherton for writing and publishing "Let's Talk Patents." She is a registered patent attorney, but because she avoided writing it in "lawyer-ease," your ignorance is about to dissipate.
Upon opening her book and looking at the list of contents, "WOW" would be an automatic response. You may not have ever pondered questions about "Statutory Invention Registration" or "Direct and Indirect Infringement" but now, all of a sudden, you realize you are holding in your hands not just a book about patent education, but a real reference jewel. "Let's Talk Patents" suddenly becomes a valuable resource for information -- for you!
Before even finishing the first chapter, there's another revelation: "Let's Talk Patents" could easily have created a high intimidation response by being another compendium of dry, factual pages. But oh no, it's not... In fact, Ms. Etheron's style is so direct --so clear -- that her teaching examples make it very easy for us to relate to things we already know. Who could not relate to: "walking into a dark alley unarmed" and "red flat" or "...it's usually the money, who has it and who gets it."
Her straight talk, easy language and understandable examples, such as the problems of two competing bicycle manufactures, pull the reader along so smoothly they may not be aware of how much they're learning. That's talent.
After Etherton's book, when someone says "Let's Talk Patents" you will be armed and ready.
Good Info - Good Place to Start.......2002-11-20
Sandra has done a very good job of presenting a complex subject in a very approachable manner. While not exhaustive, this book will give you a good basic understanding of patents and how they can help a business reach its goals.
An easy to understand overview of patents........2002-10-18
This little book tells you: what patents can and cannot do for you; how and whether to apply for a patent; how long a patent can protect your idea; the cost and time required to get a patent; etc. The writing is informal with clear examples and minimum jargon. It can be read quickly to provide good advice before deciding on whether to try to get a patent.
