Brain Builders!: A Lifelong Guide to Sharper Thinking, Better Memory, and an Age-Proof Mind
ASIN: 0802777015 |
Book Description
The most fascinating mental exercises from the New York Times internationally syndicated column "Playspace." They build brain skills in the same way physical exercise builds muscles and stamina. 60 brain-awakening exercises that strengthen connections among the mental centers that control creative-visual, executive-planning, spatial-manipulative, and logical thinking. Each exercise was developed to stimulate a different combination of brain circuits to sharpen mental skills needed to compete professionally and to retard loss of memory and other skills as the brain ages. Yet they are almost addictively fascinating. Optional hints for each exercise make every format accessible to all levels of skill.

Good companion to "The Sharper Mind".......2002-08-22
The "game" format makes this book very user-friendly and not threatening. The Sharper Mind had a similar approach was was more practical in its approach to everyday situations: remembering names, dates, etc.

Great for examples of practical math problems. Useful for the math solutions you forgot from high school and college!
1001 Math Problems (Skill Builders Practice).......2000-04-29
I purchased this book to help prepare my son for his written test with the local fire department. The problems start off easy but progress rapidly in difficulty for each category. It has a multiple choice format that is easy to read and understand. The answers are provided with a brief explanation on how to solve the problem or why it is correct. The book comes in a nice size with space to work out the problems. Now my son is telling me he needs one for the spelling test!

Customer Reviews:
Great!.......2007-04-20
I recently decided to make a career change which required going back to school. Even though I have a bachelor's degree and my area of study doesn't require math, I had to take a math test. I went to the libary desperate to find any basic math book and found this title. With a week of study, I scored the highest in my group. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who needs to brush up on their math.
Great Book to Refresh Math Rules.......2006-03-28
It has been a while since I took a math course. This series of books is excellent. I have the Algebra book also, and both are excellent. The books seem elementary initially, but that gave me some confident before getting into the more advanced topics.

Not going to get your little guy counting........2007-01-09
This is a cute Bob book but don't expect it to teach your child to count, because it won't. Has numbers as the subject but it is a strange way to present them. We still love Bob though.
btblc.......2003-02-08
this is an awesome book. it goes from the#'s 1- . if you would like to now how hi they count read the book. this is good to help kids count and read. i reccommend this book to kids 1st grade and lower.
My Son LOVES It!.......2002-05-01
My 17-month-old absolutely LOVES this book! He's learned to recognize most of the characters on the "Bob the Builder" cartoons, and loves seeing them here as well. The simple rhyme throughout the "story" entertains him no end: we usually get urged to read through it several times in a row. And even though he can't talk yet, we DO get a response at the end when we read: "Can YOU count to twenty?" Mom just loves the way he'll go and dig it off the shelf whenever she asks "Would you like to count with Bob?" DEFINITELY one of the best baby/preschool books we've gotten for our son, based on the vote that counts: HIS!

Book Description
From addition and subtraction to plane and space geometry, graphing, simultaneous linear equations, and probability, this book explains middle-school math with problems that kids want to solve: “Seventy-five employees of a company buy a lotto ticket together and win $22.5 million. How much does each employee get?” Intriguing facts about the history of math show what a human creation it is: Both the Maya and the Hindus of India invented the concept of zero, but the Maya did it first by 400 years; in 1858 Mr. William Shanks, a British mathematician, hand-calculated pi to 707 decimal digits and had them inscribed on his tombstone! Alas, the last 200 or so were wrong.

Math's Little Book of Why.......2007-10-16
After reading some of the reviews on this book, I just had to respond with a review of my own.
This book reminds me a bit of "The Big Book of Tell Me Why" that children (and adults) love to read. I am a home schooling mom, not a math teacher. I am home schooling an accelerated second grader. For our "normal" math class work, we are use Singapore Math and the "Key To" series. For math enrichment, we are reading "Math on Call", A Mathematics Handbook and this one, "Math Games for Middle School". I find this book to be just what we need for answering my son's "why questions". "Where do numbers come from?" "Why do we use base 10." "Do other people use another base?" "Why do computers use base 2?" "What is base 2?" As a home schooling mom, I love this book for its deep, yet managemable explanations to these questions. Terms are also defined. For example: base, exponent, decimal, decimal dot...both in terms and in examples. We are only on the first chapter (though I have browsed the first several) and my son only grasps some of the layers of the onion, but we are both enjoying the book. Our country relies too much on formulas and not enough on understanding. This book would bring joy to a class as an opening warm up to get them thinking. I wish we had more educators like the author of this book that excited his students to the joy of mathematics and not just to rote learning of rules that seemingly "dropped on us from the sky." The author taught on the faculties of Columbia university for 50 years and Princeton for 5 years. His earliest work was 8 years in his native city on the faculty of the University of Rome. Ph.D. in mathematics and in civil engineering. He has a center (I am not sure if it still exists as he died in 1997 at age 90) called the Salvadori Center that is dedicated to improving teaching in middle schools with emphasis on math and science. His words, "I have dedicated the last years of my life entirely to teaching the young, from kindergartners through high schoolers." Great book.
Math Games for Middle School.......2003-10-02
I teach middle school mathematics and I think the book is great to aid in cooperative learning groups. Using the information and developing work stations will enhance the students' knowledge of the material. As a lesson, the book would require the creativity of the teacher to add other material and/or adjustments to make it interesting. This book is best for reteaching or review of the topics being taught.
Just a bad math book!.......2003-08-02
I teach Middle School Pre-Algebra and One Year Algebra. Every summer I try and purchase books and magazines in order to find new and interesting lesson plans. I purchased this book thinking I could get at least something new and interesting to excite my kids. This book definitely didnt help. College students would be bored with the books writing style and exercises. And most of the ideas are old and rejected from years past.
Hand-outs and book assignments are not inspiring. A book titled "Math Games" should be just that; a book full of math games. Not one with mundane hand-outs.
Great "Daily Math" Problems.......2001-02-26
As a middle school substitute teacher, I'm always looking for things to use as daily problem to open the class with. This book is GREAT!! Problems are divided by topic so it easy to pick & choose. Answers are completely explained.

Excellent Math Book.......2000-10-04
As a middle school math teacher I was amazed when a parent brought this book to me. It was great. It has lots of interesting activites to do in math along with some very good worksheets. After having the book for thirty minutes I had already done to activities for my 7th grade classroom. This would be a great book for teachers and parents who are looking for some extra practice for their students.
