Book Description
Millions of people have learned to draw using the methods of Dr. Betty Edwards's bestseller The New Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain. Now, much as artists progress from drawing to painting, Edwards moves from black-and-white into color. This new guide distills the enormous existing knowledge about color theory into a practical method of working with color to produce harmonious combinations.
Using techniques tested and honed in her five-day intensive color workshops, Edwards provides a basic understanding of how to see color, how to use it, and-for those involved in art, painting, or design-how to mix and combine hues. Including more than 125 color images and exercises that move from simple to challenging, this volume explains how to:
- see what is really there rather than what you "know" in your mind about colored objects
- perceive how light affects color, and how colors affect one another
- manipulate hue, value, and intensity of color and transform colors into their opposites
- balance color in still-life, landscape, figure, and portrait painting
- understand the psychology of color
- harmonize color in your surroundings
While we recognize and treasure the beautiful use of color, reproducing what we see can be a challenge. Accessibly unweaving color's complexity, this must-have primer is destined to be an instant classic.

BETTY EDWARDS ROCKS!.......2007-09-17
Anything written by this woman is amaaaazing!!!!! Loved this book! I have to recommend the others too!!!
The New Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain (BEST GIFT I HAVE EVER RECIEVED!) along with the workbook... and Drawing on the Artist Within.... if you have these books, there is no need for ANY OTHER on drawing instruction!!!! MUST HAVES!
Well organized presentation. Very infromative. .......2007-09-10
The information in the book is presented in much the same way that instruction in a college class is presented - step-by-step. The progression of the material is perfect. An artist at any level could learn form this author. It's easy to see that Betty Edwards is an experienced teacher.
There are projects in the book that ground the written information in hands-on learning. The projects are fun yet by their nature improve both color mixing and perception.
I highly recommend this book! Loved it!
color by betty edwards a course in mastering the art of mixing colors.......2007-05-16
It's very clear and concise and an excellent resoursce.
A worthwhile color course.......2007-01-16
A well thought out book. Color theory is presented accurately however reference to the visual complementary theory would be useful. This is a book where the benefit will only be properly dervived by working through the exercises. This takes time and commitment and it is not a book for the casual reader. On the way some useful color tools are developed. In summary a very unique work that is not perfect but can advance your knowledge and skills significantly.
Now I get it..........2006-05-03
I am not an artist, at least, that is not what I've gone to school for (I am a History professor). But Betty Edwards' books, over the past couple of decades, have helped me to draw like I know what I am doing. And now I know more about color and the art of mixing acrylics.
For those of you who have taken art classes or consider yourselves to be artists, I don't know how you take the book. But for those of us who yearn to express ourselves through art but were never instructed, this book is a godsend. No one ever explained color theory to me before, at least that I could grasp, but Edwards' no nonsense way of teaching as a step-by-step process explains color theory in excruciating detail.
I tried to paint before, but failed to mix the colors the way I wanted to, or to match what I was seeing. Edwards makes sure that this never happens to you again, at least that is what I got from the book. What I found the most helpful on an emotional level were the little blurbs in the margins, which some other "reviewers" criticized. Why do these help? Because now I know that Van Gogh, Da Vinci, and others had to LEARN color theory like I have to learn it. They didn't just pick up a paintbrush and oils and voila!, they were masters. They worked at it, just like me. I don't feel so stupid about art anymore.
Edwards will make you see color structures in a better way, an artists' way. You should be able to express what you see in front of you better after reading her instructions in this book and doing the lessons. Painting used to be mysterious to me, and now I know how to achieve the colors I want, how to balance out my paintings, and how to think like a painter. Like I said above, I no longer feel like an idiot where painting is concerned, I feel like I can paint, which is exactly what Edwards wants from her readers.
The only problem I have with the book is that my color mixes don't always come out looking the same as in the book, even though I do what she says to do, but it may be the limitations of color in printing a book that is the problem, maybe not, I don't know. But unlike some of the other "reviewers," I had no problem getting all the right materials. Just go to Dick Blick Art Supplies online and you will find all the materials she wants you to have, no problem, including all the right colors.
If you have never understood color theory before and want to understand it, and if you have never been taught to mix paint before but want to learn it now, I highly recommend this book. Maybe it should be called "Painting for Dummies," or something, because I am not so sure how much help it is for people who already call themselves artists, but it is helping this historian learn to express her creative side with confidence and in color.
Book Description
This book was written to foster the creative spirit of the artist and to aid in the development and the continuation of realistic representational art. It is for all who love to draw the human form. It is for those who have never drawn a line, for those who are students who can draw to a certain degree, and for those professional artists who are proficient in drawing. This book shows step by step how to construct and draw the human figure and face as well along with all it’s features.
Customer Reviews:
Book designed for mediocraty.......2007-10-05
While the cover might lead you to believe that the artist of the book is competent, his disproportioned and scratchy sketches are not notable enough to buy a book of and certainly not something you want in your repetoir of skills. His use of proportions is just incorrect.
This book is not a usable source any type of academic art study. The artist of this book needs to take some art classes badly.
Don't waste your money if you want a good book to learn how to draw use better and more accurate references that are out there because there are plenty.
Blind trying to lead the blind.......2007-06-07
One is supposed to be kind in most circumstances, but when this poor book is STILL offered to the unwitting student, it finally seems appropriate to speak out at the risk of seeming mean-spirited. Mr Faragasso's own weak drawings offered as examples should serve as ample warning that he is not in any way a master draughtsman and his instructional notes are on the same level. It is a backward, fragmented approach. How he has survived at the Art Student's League surprises me.
It's especially unique & complicated..........2007-02-01
The title here is interesting: great choice(!). The actual contents, however, are unique yet unrefined.
I bought this based on the interesting cover & title; I hadn't actually seen its contents. When I received this in the mail, my immediate 1st impression was that this looks like someone's loose & rough notes for an *eventually* finished product. This seems like the idea for a *possible* book, not the actual book itself. Many of these drawings are exceedingly sketchy, and many are highly stylized.
Is this helpful though? That's the bottom-line, for me at least. The many pages on the planes of the figure are so incredibly complicated, it's kind of impressive & frustrating at the same time. I give the author a lot of credit in the sense that this is one of the most unique-looking drawing books I've ever seen. 5 Stars for originality! But what good is that if the actual information here isn't as good as in other currently available books? It's just too needlessly complicated & expensive for me to honestly recommend.
Maybe it's great classroom teaching, but as an individual work- it just seems like a nice try at best. If anyone's interested in drawing from memory, I highly recommend Bridgman's books. My other favorites are by Burne Hogarth, as well as The Figure: The Classic Approach to Drawing and Construction by Walt Reed.
The absolute best book on drawing that there is........2006-08-04
Let me say first that I am highly predjudiced in favor of this book. Also, learning to draw is DIFFICULT for most of us!!
I had the good fortune to study with Mr. Faragasso about 20 years ago at the Art Students League. My father studied with Frank Reilly and Mr. Faragasso was one of his classmates. After so many years as a professional painter I can say that the knowledge that he gave to me has served me well. I am so grateful that all of this information has been assemled in one book for all to benefit from.It is also woderful that the information has been preserved (none of us are getting any younger!).
The planes are clearly explained. They relate to the structures which underlie them, therefore they can be a bit challenging. However, that IS our anatomy and it is what we have to learn in order to move forward and learn to really SEE and UNDERSTAND what we are seeing. This book will be a classic.
Superb manual on the craft of drawing.......2006-01-24
This is one of the finest book on the craft of drawing currently available, if not the finest. The book is an execellent presentation of the program developed by the late Frank J. Reilly at the Art Students League. I know this because I was one of Mr. Reilly's drawing class monitors for two years. This is a book for people who are truly serious about learning the craft of representational drawing. Short of having Mr.Reilly or Jack Faragasso pointing out the wat, this is as good as it gets in art instruction books.

"Masterfully balancing the practitioner's need for concrete suggestions and the scholar's quest for intriguing ideas, this book offers tips to be tried in class tomorrow and ideas to be mused on for months."
--Maryellen Weimer, professor, Penn State University-Berks Campus
"I have used the first edition of Joe Lowman's book for years and found it most helpful. The new edition is a must for teachers and faculty developers."
--Milt Cox, University Director for Teaching Effectivness Programs, Miami University
In this second edition of his classic resource, Joseph Lowman expands on his earlier model of effective teaching to place greater emphasis on motivational skill and commitment to teaching. He presents a practical new learning model that compares six sources of influence on what and how students learn in a college course. All types of teachers and instructors will discover options on how to organize classes and use group work to promote learning. They will also find a checklist for assessing their classroom performance on video, detailed instructions for using video analysis to improve their technique, and an innovative approach to evaluating their overall performance.
Customer Reviews:
Among THE VERY BEST books on college teaching.......2007-10-21
I was turned onto this book my one of my instructors in formal pedagogy, whom I felt was a great teacher in his own right, and I am ever grateful.
Lowman begins from this definition: "A classroom is an emotionally charged interpersonal arena in which a wide range of psychological phenomena occur." Also, he begins with a challenge: "Beyond a solid mastery of one's subject, college teaching of the highest order appears to be a complex task requiring the ability of communicate well with students, whether in large or small groups or in formal or informal settings, and to relate to them as people in ways they find positive and motivating."
Lowman's strength is in his ability to chart in clear and ordered contours the recognition of the best course of action to be taken in a given context. He refrences a number of interesting sources, of which two impressed me as being of primary importance: the 1970 Mann Group Study and a book by Duffy and Jones, entitled 'Teaching Within the Rhythms of the Semester' (1995). Although I'm not crazy about typologies, I found the Mann Group findings truly helpful in dealing with the continual flux of people that come to my classroom, each with varying presuppositions, life challenges, and diverse backgrounds, which must be sorted and dealt with quickly and effectively in creating positive learning environments. The Mann typing of students gives a quick and accurate paradigm for categorizing behavior which I've found very useful for building community in the classroom.
Lowman's ability to apply pedogagic studies such as these to specific contexts that arise in the course of instruction puts the methodology of teaching on a series of grids - which have the cumulative effect of locating for the aspiring teacher an easily referenced modus operandi which leads to classroom success. His masterful, accessible, and graphlike insights have helped me organize my teaching and classroom presence as no other work I've read on a skill set - in the use of which one can never improve oneself enough.
Well worth the investment for any prospective college instructor - comprehensive - all the essentials are discussed with concision and adequate depth - and useful strategies for engaging virtually any situation arising in the classroom emerge. If you have funds for one guide for professional teaching - get this one.
Very useful descriptions of masterful University teaching........1999-08-04
This book provides examples of inspirational teaching and techniques for reaching students. For me it ranks up there right next to Wilbert McKeachie's "Teaching Tips".

Book Description
This combination CD-ROM and workbook of technology activities for pre-service teachers is designed for the Educational Technology or Technology for Teachers course found in all teacher preparation programs. The CD and portfolio-development workbook focus on what students learn and how they learn it rather than on what teachers say and do. The CD models innovative instructional techniques for classroom use. In the process students create a portfolio of technology learning activities which they can use when seeking their first teaching assignment. Exercises range from the conventional (multiple-choice quizzes and term identification) to the innovative (online journals and interactive Web exercises).
Customer Reviews:
Great idea- -but inside out.......2002-01-06
This is a workbook/CD text for training teachers in the field of educational technology. The text covers topics which are central to classroom teaching with technology: learning styles, multimedia student authoring, evaluating software, classroom management, presentation with technologies, assessment, and the Internet. The exercises are well done and promote thoughtful reflection as well as mastery of the content.
Unfortunately, the central premise of the workbook/CD package is inside out. Unlike many texts with accompanying CD, the CD in this set contains the central content of the text, while the book is merely the accompanying workbook material. On the one hand, it's nice to have a workbook for students to write in. But on the other hand, it would be much more effective use of the technology if the students could read the texts in book format and then complete all of the work electronically using software on the CD. In fact, many of the workbook exercises are also presented in Webpage format on the CD, but the vocabulary and review exercises do not appear there, even though they could easily be assessed online. (The answers to the exercises are printed in the back of the workbook.)
A more serious problem is that all of the content text is contained only on the CD. Thus, a student must access the CD in order to read the content materials. The content materials vary widely in quality, from excellent in-depth articles to terse PowerPoint presentations. Some of the content texts are a few pages long, but several run to over 100 pages. Most are not in HTML format, but in Adobe PDF, set to display as very short pages, similar to presentation slide format. Since the content does not appear in the workbook, students will either need to read everything online, or else print hundreds of short pages so that they can read them offline. Students who only have access to computers on campus will have no choice but to print the pages if they want to read them at home. I really like the idea of a CD/text package, but it would far more useful if the text included the content, while the CD focused on the exercises, with built-in automated assessment and editing capabilities.

Customer Reviews:
Good for quick review; you still need to do homework........2003-11-08
This book should help you in reviewing your notes that you took in class. As the title of the book suggests, this is a crash course for general calculus.
Figures and graphs in the book should help you understand many different problems and how their solutions are derived. You should expect to solve many of the problems in the book yourself, on paper, also. That is the only way to understand mathematics; by doing it yourself. This book should help you get started in the right direction because of the ample examples present in it.
Do not expect to get rid your other calculus books and use this as the sole text for reviewing Calculus. This book is meant to be a companion to your other calculus textbooks, not their replacement. As good as it may be, you still need detailed explaination of rules and theories about Calculus, which are not explained in this book.
Outstanding aid to Calculus!.......2000-06-26

An excellent book fortextbook support.......2007-06-25
I bought this book to bolster my knowledge of Algebra concepts while taking precalculus courses at my local college. I found it to be very supportive and supplements the textbook that was assigned to my class.
Mary in Her own words.......2007-05-14
Personal refections of a priest on his devotion o the Blessed Mother. Well presented.
The best of the Schaum's outlines on Algebra.......2007-02-15
Schaum's has several flavors of its outlines on Algebra in circulation. Of all of them, I would say that this one is the best, not only for college students but for high school algebra students who plan to study mathematics further in both high school and college. It takes you from the very beginning and talks about numbers and number systems, gets into the meat of algebra with solving various types of equations and equations in more than one variable, and finishes up with some linear and matrix algebra. The explanations are very well done, and thus the book acts as a supplemental textbook and reference as well as a compact source of exercises, solved problems, and essential equations. I have examined the section on exponents and logarithms, and I really don't see that the outline's approach is antiquated at all, as some of the other reviewers have claimed. If I had any criticism of the book at all it would be that it needs more "word problems" than it already has. After all, if you get to the point where you can solve equation B for variable X, then a computer can do the rest of the work for you. The work in mathematics as well as engineering is figuring out what equation will yield a solution to the problem at hand.
Out of Date.......2006-01-11
Last revised in 1997, the Outline of College Algebra has not kept up with the content of current college algebra classes and textbooks.
The treatment of logarithms is archaic. There is no discussion of exponential equations or logarithmic equations. Solving exponential and logarithmic equations is part of any good college algebra class and textbook, and is a fundamental skill required for calculus, science and engineering. Lacking these topics, the Outline is not a complete supplement or study guide for college algebra classes.
decent for its price.......2005-06-04
book has decent material for its price, however i am finding a lot of errors as i'm working thru this book. there's an error on pg. 169 sect 17.4 parabolas
(1)y^2=4py
it's supposed to be y^2-4px
that's an error in the example used to teach the concept, not just a small error in the samples. although there's plenty of errors in the sample problems as well.
use this book to review like i am, it's got some decent proofs in here but not all of them. check out www.wikipedia.com for extra information on proofs on certain sections.
overall for $12, u can't go wrong, just make sure to use it as a review, and remember the book has errors.

Review with no title.......2000-08-12
This review was based on the 2000 version, the newest one, of the College Chemistry. After studying this as a guildline to the subject of Chemistry, I found out that this book had very good and short explanations of all the important concepts. However, this study guild's value had been destoried because the amount of misprints and errors in the example problems. This book seemed to be rushed to meet the 2000 year time. Therefore, the mistakes in it was overlooked. To learn concepts, the book is a very good aid, however to look at the examples, it is very poor and sad to see those simple mistakes.
