5 out of 5 stars Best teacher guide EVER.......2007-09-15

This booklet provides vastly more instruction on the nitty-gritty of what teachers need in the classroom. Thank you!

5 out of 5 stars Marzano is a must read........2007-09-10

I wish I would have heard of Robert Marzano my first year of teaching. This book explains the research behind the classroom instruction and gives you ideas of what you should do. This is a great book to have with the "Handbook for Classroom Instruction that Works".

5 out of 5 stars Great resource!.......2007-05-12

After hearing so much in teacher in-services about "Marzano strategies" I decided to check out his work myself. I was struck by the simple fact they are not his strategies as people talk about. Instead, they are research supported strategies that he and other authors/researchers have compiled and shrunk down into some user-friendly nuggets. The book is very easy to read, provides ample sources of real research, and is practical. The layout is great and the content superb. It is an excellent resource for teachers looking to improve their instruction based on reliable and somewhat traditional methods.

5 out of 5 stars Solid Resource for Educators.......2007-03-17

Provides tangible ideas that any educator can take into the classroom. I would also recommend any book by Kelly Gallagher.

5 out of 5 stars Marzano's Classroom Instruction That Works.......2007-01-09

An excellent text for the first time teacher. Provides techniques and examples to assist in implementation of the techniques. Gives you more teaching tools for your toolbox. Easy to read, taking one chapter at a time. I highly recommend the book.

5 out of 5 stars The Mentor's Guide - Feb. 20, 2003.......2003-02-18

This book provides the best definition of a mentor that I have come across thus far with the statement "...and at there best they inspire us to reach beyond ourselves; they show us how to make a positive difference in a wider world". It is an easy to read reference tool filled with applicable information about how to prepare for and what to watch for during your journey as a mentor. The author does an excellent job of inspiring a can do attitude by giving the reader the ability to use this book as a workbook to be able to work through real life experiences. This book is a must have for anyone desiring to be in a mentoring relationship.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for mentoring!.......2002-09-30

I just finished my thesis on mentoring child care center directors. The Mentor's Guide was the best resource. My thesis quotes many authors but there was non better than Lois Zachary. Her book is the easiest to read and she puts into words what I was thinking. I can't say enough about the wealth of information, ideas, quotes and straight comments that I found useful in this book. If you are embarking on a mentoring relationship this book is a must read. Thank you Lois.

5 out of 5 stars The Mentor's Guide.......2000-07-07

Lois Zachary has made a wonderful contribution to the field of mentoring. Her new book is an "easy read" with wonderful metaphors, appropriate emphasis on relationship building, clear distinctions between old style mentoring versus mentoring as a partnership, interesting examples, and useful exercises.

I bought the book out of curiosity rather than truly being interested in the topic. In minutes I found myself fascinated, and I even saw applications of the information to my relationship with my 10 year old grandson!

5 out of 5 stars Educational Trainer .......2006-11-10

This book is IDEAL for anyone who is going to train or teach anything. How to cut the fluff and deliver the required facts.

5 out of 5 stars A refreshing approach to learning and training--I highly recommend it..........2006-11-03

I am not a professional trainer by trade. However, I was recently appointed training coordinator for my department. The Accelerated Learning Handbook has definitely helped me approach my job with a fresh perspective. The information, ideas, and techniques presented have enabled me to more effectively train those in my department as well as those in other functions. Before reading the AL Handbook, I thought all that was needed to effectively teach someone was simply to make sure all of my PowerPoint slides were logically put together. I now have a broader view of how people learn and a sold framework to use when putting together training materials on any topic. I highly recommend this book to anyone that wants to engage the audience and create meaningful, effective training presentations.

5 out of 5 stars Practical ideas for facilitators.......2006-02-21

I have worked with adult learners for more than fifteen years and have always tried to incorporate whole-brained, participative learning. This book provided some excellent theoretical background as well as a lot of new instantly usable ideas. I wasn't even all the way through before I applied a couple of the techniques and got an excellent response from my client.

5 out of 5 stars excellent training tool.......2003-07-06

I was getting ready to prepare a training program for 44 persons when I read this book. Immediately! after I used the guidelines to prepare my session. Preparation was fast and easy -and fun! I really couldn't believe that it was that easy to apply and it has been one of my best sessions to date. I refer to it when I need a refresher or a new perspective. I definately reccomend this book for trainers who need to keep their material fresh and interesting (esp. in-house trainers).

4 out of 5 stars Accelerated Learning Handbook.......2002-01-02

Finally, teachers and administrators have a useful tool to recharge their classrooms/schools. We have become so test oriented that many times we forget that the process of learning comes from the doing. The statement comes to mind that we utter with new approaches," When do I have the time to get it all in?". That is where the problem lies! We are so pressured with these new demands that we loose sight of what is important, the process. This book will give us a clearer picture of how we can recharge our teaching and can provide the key so we can use the ideas to change the way we teach or approach the students' learning who are in our care.

5 out of 5 stars Be an informed educator.......2001-09-10

This book is compiled from the online "learningbrain" monthly newsletter, which gives the latest and timely research articles pertinent to education. The book covers a similar format in 10 areas: cognition, environments, achievement and test performance, music/arts, memory, mind/body, nutrition, enrichment, early years, and the fragile brain. Each article gives a succinct summary of the issues based on research data, "Action Steps" and sources. There are just too many interesting and relevant topics. A few examples: "Is Chocolate Good for Learning?", "The 'Mozart Effect' Under Fire: Where Do We Go From Here?", "Why Some Learners Strive on Stress?", "Learning a New Language in Early Childhood Requires Less Brain Effort", "Neuroplasticity: How Do We Change Our Brain?', "The Biology of Cheating"... There are many passages that you wish to quote and teach the students. Teachers and school administrators can also make better decisions based on reliable information supplied by the book.

Compared to Jensen's other books with even more illustrations, I hope this book could be improved in the next edition. E.g., can you make sense of the following? "Research suggests that fonts with serifs (referring to the short lines stemming at an angle from the upper and lower ends of the stroke of a letter) increase reading speed rates when compared to sans serif fonts (without seifs)." (p. 10) A sketch of the anatomy of the brain would help for visualising many terms throughout the book. E.g. in "Gender Differences and Learning Performance", unless you have some background already, it would be hard to know what is being compared (pp. 69-71). Of course you can start with other introductory books first. Overall, this is a very valuable and interesting book for all educators.

5 out of 5 stars Understanding and Facilitating Adult Learning.......2000-10-02

A thoroughly researched and extensively documented book which efficiently outlines 20 years of studies on adult learning. Effective adulte learning practices are explained in from six categories, voluntary engagement, respect among participants, collaboration and negaotiation of needs, relective praxis, critical appreciation of diversity, and student empowerment of self improvement. Aside from the institutional mode of learning, external authority, set objectives, set teaching roles, prescribed evaluation, adult learning seeks to empower self directed learners with critical thinking modes. This latter kind of learning is not without risk. The risks of dillusion, professional incompetence, and the perils of playing close to a kind of classroom therapy. Nonetheless, adult students bring a wealth of experience (good and bad), maturity, problem posing, problem solving, and task focus to adult learning. Finally, adult learning will invariably be restricted by institutional contexts, evalution criteria, and contextual business norms.

    Book Description

Research-Based Strategies to Ignite Student Learning is the first book for educators written by an author who is both a neurologist and a classroom teacher. Dr. Willis used her neurology expertise to examine the past two decades of learning-centered brain research. Using her background and experience as a clinical neurologist and neuroscience researcher, she sifted through the abundance of neuroimaging and brain mapping information. She assessed what information was both valid and relevant to education. She then employed her training and experience as a classroom teacher to provide strategies for implementing the best of this research in the classroom. She brings this knowledge to life in a comprehensive and accessible style.

Teachers will be introduced to strategies that will work in their own classrooms. These strategies will help teachers improve student memory, learning, and test-taking success. Teachers will also learn how to captivate and hold students' attention.

Dr. Willis takes a reader-friendly approach to neuroscience, describing instructional strategies that are adaptable for grades K through 12. Through statistical data, individual student stories, and her own experiences using these strategies with elementary and middle school students, Dr. Willis provides teachers with a wealth of information they will want to start using in their classrooms before finishing the book.

The book includes learning strategies that have come from research about how stress and emotion affect learning. Willis describes assessment techniques that not only assess authentically and with diversity, but also teach while assessing. This book will become one that teachers will return to again and again to pick up new strategies to make their own.

5 out of 5 stars Hope is on every page.......2006-10-18

This book also helped me find the missing pieces of the puzzle. I don't usually read my mom's books but I read this one. It is interesting and fun to read.

5 out of 5 stars Bought it for reference- Read it FROM COVER TO COVER.......2006-10-02

I bought this book because I know there is a great deal of information out there claiming to be "brain-based" research or teaching strategies and I wanted to know what to believe. When I saw that the author was both a neurologist and a classroom teacher I hoped that the book would show me which research was valid and important. I was more than satisfied
Do you know that feeling of trying to find a piece of the puzzle, when you are working with a child? If you could just find that last piece everything would come together and that child would be successful? Well, this book gives you the strategies to find that last piece. I thought I would use the book as a reference, but when I started reading Willis's book her writing style was so easy to connect with that I read the book cover to cover. It is the kind of book that you read, then are able to use the strategies presented. Then you continue on and practice new techniques. You might reread a chapter because you know that you are learning something valuable for children. It also confirmed that many things that I am presently doing are right on track.
You know this author is writing for the purpose of truly helping children because you can feel her excitement when discussing brain based science strategies. Now that I know more about how the brain processes information, I feel more able to explain my teaching strategies to others. When I started teaching over twenty years ago I didn't think that words like "amygdala" and "reticular activating system" would be part of my vocabulary. Willis's book demonstrated the importance of teaching in sync with how these parts of the brain work. I know the educators who design curriculum and tests will read this book and realize that we can do more to motivate students and help them connect with the knowledge we can offer them.
I see how these strategies also help to get student's attention and keep their focus. I highly recommend Research-Based Strategies to Ignite Student Learning for teachers, special education specialists, speech therapists, administrators, and resource specialists in all grades elementary through high school. The research is current and well presented and the strategies are coherently connected to the research. The "Gray Matter" sections go into interesting details about the structure and function of the parts of the brain involved in learning and the Glossary is comprehensive. This book really helped me find the missing pieces of the puzzle. That's what teaching is all about.

5 out of 5 stars Surprise Your Brain: Buy this book!.......2006-09-25

Dr. Willis is a unique blend of common sense, humor and brains. Judy is a rarity being both a "brain" doctor, and a classroom teacher. She cares about her students, and works tirelessly with her students and on-going research. This book gives you interesting medical facts, then applies it directly to classroom strategies.

I've always taught using a multi-sensory approach, but now I know why I do it! This book will back up what you know--and what you do in the classroom. I've had a lot of fun "surprising" the brains of my students using Judy's ideas. Now I have this book, my own neurologist/teacher in my backpack of tricks.

    PS I love the glossary!

A good book with ideas to start your morning meetings in primary grades. I used several ideas from the book and inter-twined them with my already used schedule.

      Book Description

While covering the basic concepts of psychological theory as it applies to education, child development, human learning and behavior, classroom management and assessment, this text is written from the point of view that teaching is both an art and a science. It is the first text to offer a practitioner-researcher model of teaching in which both pre-service and in-service teachers learn to integrate observational skills and hypothesis testing into their classroom teaching as a way of constantly checking research and theory against demonstrated results. Based on the practice of Action Research, it challenges students to become critical thinkers both as immediate consumers of teacher training courses and later as classroom teachers.
