Book Description

This highly successful book has been called the most comprehensive text on the market, providing students with needed career theory as well as practical techniques and examples. Through the author's clear writing style, case examples, tables, and exercises, students develop a solid understanding of the theoretical models of career counseling and are thoroughly exposed to the practical information on how to effectively counsel clients about career issues. As demonstrated by the text's new subtitle, 'A Holistic Approach,' this substantially revised Seventh Edition reflects the growing emphasis on looking at the "whole person"--values, temperament, talents, and passions--to determine his or her best career fit.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Painful.......2007-09-03

This is not useful. Many of the theories presented are outdated and the attempt at multiculturalism is offensive at best and only serves to present non-white cultures as "other". This book is poorly written, and in fact oddly written. If you don't have to buy this for class, don't buy it.

5 out of 5 stars The best career counseling textbook.......2007-04-06

This is the most comprehensive and well-written of all the career counseling textbooks. It has excellent coverage of theories, counseling models, how to do an intake, standardized assessment, and technology. Five whole chapters are devoted to doing career counseling with special populations, including multicultural groups, women, people with disabilities, and GLB clients. There are also guides for developing career-related programs in elementary and secondary schools and colleges and universities. Ten very useful appendices address multicultural issues, professional associations, counseling web sites, etc. The book is easy to read, and each chapter includes supplementary learning exercises. The holistic approach and the multicultural sensitivity of the book are especially appreciated. My students have found the book to be very thorough and useful to help them prepare to do career counseling. No other career counseling book approaches the quality of this book.

1 out of 5 stars I feel for those who are required to read this.......2007-01-27

This is the WORST textbook ever. Im not kidding. It is poorly written and behind the times. Anyone who is not white is reffered to as 'ethnic' (now white people have no ethnicity? People of color cant be acculturated?) and many of the theories that are presented as being applicable view perfectly normal people as pathological. It barely has a grasp of the multicultural movement that many other fields in counseling have seemed to have jumped on. Its painful to read and even more painful to try and piece together the fragmented bits of information it gives.

Book Description

Ideal for anyone embarking on or considering a career in human services, counseling, psychology, social work, or any of the other helping professions, this book provides an overview of the stages of the helping process, as well as the skills and knowledge required to be a successful helping professional. Drawing on their years of experience, the Coreys focus on the struggles, anxieties, and uncertainties one encounters on the road to becoming an effective helper. The book emphasizes self-reflection on a number of professional issues and challenges the reader to examine their motives for choosing a helping career, and takes a candid look at the demands and strains they'll face in the helping professions.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource.......2001-01-25

This book was the text my instructor assigned in an interpersonal communication class I took a few years ago. It is very readable, as are all books by the Coreys. It covers a wide range of topics and it uses case examples to illustrate the points. It isn't a counselling book in terms of having alot of exercises on questioning or empathy. It does discuss counselling skills, but it is more concerned with the worker's personal development, in terms of ethics, self-awareness, self-care, etc. The suggested activities at the end of the chapter really help the learning process. My only criticism of the book is that a few of the chapters are a tad long.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars E-Learning and the Science of Instruction.......2007-01-03

(My first language is Spanish, so excuse any misspells) I have been working on delivery management, and now development, of online courses ind Guatemala since 1999, for a private university, international training organizations and government. Among all my research to learn about the topic and improve my work, this piece of literature is among the very best. It bases its conclussions on research results, it places the human being (who is the target of e-learning programs) in the center of the process and, based on that, and other aspects, it provides valuable information on what works and what doesn't, concerning teaching methodologies for online teaching and/or training programs. Though, it does not concentrate or cover management systems for e-learning program delivery, another very important issue for successful distance programs. The book is great, simple and clear. Bright!!

5 out of 5 stars Valuable resource........2006-11-11

Ruth Colvin Clark continues to put out valuable resouces for those interested in multimedia education. This would be a valuable addition to any library.

5 out of 5 stars Great for eLearning Designers and Reviewers.......2006-08-01

With many years of experience in building eLearning and educational software I was looking for a reference to back up my "I know it when I see it" thoughts on good and bad courseware. This book met or exceeded my expectations. I like that the chapters are shorter and that the observations are backed up with study results. The References section is a valuable collection of eLearning studies in itself. There are also useful checklists included with the book.

There are some newer technologies such as Wikis and Blogs that are not covered in the book, but since the authors focus on proven techniques with studies to back them up it's unlikely such technologies would receive a lot of coverage at this point.

If you're responsible for designing or reviewing courseware this is a very good nuts-and-bolts reference.

5 out of 5 stars A book that every person in this field need to use.......2005-06-04

e-Learning and the Science of Instruction is a must have for anybody that is already a pro, or just starting out at designing web-based instruction. The authors give outstanding guidance for every step of the way, from explaining theories to the best way to set up your web site. It shows excellent illustrations of what to do, as well as what NOT to do. This book is a tool that every one in the business shouldn't be without.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent practical book for practitioners.......2005-05-16

I have been designing and developing e-Learning for 6 years and this book has been wonderful to help remind me of some basics, teach me a few things, and give excellent practical advice as I continue developing. I am not one to read textbooks or non-fiction but I find this writing style very easy to read and I am able to easily apply the concepts. If you have never developed e-Learning but are studying the topic in school, this book may come across as dry and hard to read. Hold on to it and pick it up after you've been developing for a year or so and I'm sure you'll find it as useful as I have.

I was pleased with the product, however I was very disappointed that it took so long to be shipped to me. I got behind in my class readings because my textbook didn't get to me for over 2 weeks after I ordered it. Was that because I used the free shipping option?
Thank you.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Reaching Your Potential.......2000-06-01

Many people advocate life long learning and the process of reaching your full potential, but generally no one knows how to do that. This book is designed for individuals from middle school to retirement age and provides them with step by step assessments, worksheets and exercises to reach their potential.

This book is broken down in five subject topics, and fifteen chapters to provide an easy systematic approach to personal and professional development. The five subject matters are: Developing Your Potential in Emotional, Intellectual, Physical and Social realms with the fifth unit entitled Developing Your Action Plan.

This book has been wonderful in meeting the needs of four different educational and training areas. First as a personal self help book. Second as a textbook for a college level one-hour class entitled Professional Image Development offered through the Johnson County Community College in Overland Park, Kansas. Third as an in-house book for career and personal growth seminars within private industry. And fourth, as a resource book, accessible to all employees, checked out from a Corporate Learning Center library.

The book does not have religious growth. The authors state that religious growth is outside the realm of the book. This makes the book perfect for the diverse workforce and student population.

The book does have a companion guide for instructors: Reaching Your Potential, an Instructor's Guide.

5 out of 5 stars Yep, it is THE ultimate guide.......2007-09-24

Actually, as its name implies.. This book is the ultimate guide in the process of choosing a specialty.
Other books that come after it are anita tylor's "how choose a medical specialty", which is more to the point but gives little detail about each specialty. After is "So You Want to Be a Brain Surgeon" which has much less in each specialty than the previous two.

4 out of 5 stars Great book for students starting med school.......2007-02-08

This book was really helpful in giving me the general insights into different specialities that I ought to keep in mind as I enter med school. Moreover, the book is excellent in preparing you for what you have to do to be a competitive applicant for residency.

5 out of 5 stars Medical Specialty.......2007-01-09

Very helpful in reviewing the different specialties in the medical field. Great for helping that medical student get an early jump on what area to consider.

4 out of 5 stars One of the better books on comparing specialties.......2006-03-20

I would recommend this book to the undecided medical students in their 3rd year- I bought this early in my 4th year after having read Anita's book on Choosing a Medical Specialty, and still being uncertain. I was trying to talk myself out of Gen Surg... Ultimately, a book is not going to make the decision for you, but it is good to be informed and it helps to either reinforce what your gut instinct is telling you. Try to borrow a friends or buy a used copy- but it's definitely worth a read!

3 out of 5 stars Great advise for the single med student.......2005-09-09

This book has great advise in it for the single med student. However, if you happen to be married and a parent most of the advise is far too time consuming and impractical.

Author Nicholas Lore uses the techniques of his career-guidance network, the Rockport Institute, to make The Pathfinder a substitute for a great job counselor. Through goal setting, list making, and other techniques, the book leads readers though the process of deciding exactly what they want to do for a living and finding a way to make it happen. Lore realizes that people have different temperaments and decision-making methods, so he provides individualized advice to suit each one. He also understands that creating a new career requires courage as well as desire, so The Pathfinder devotes plenty of space to motivation and overcoming fears. While anyone looking for a new career will find direction with this guide, people who didn't know they were looking may decide to start once they go through Lore's probing self-examination process.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars WANT A CAREER YOU LOVE? GET THIS BRILLIANT BOOK.......2007-08-13

This is the masterpiece book on picking your perfect career. I went all the way through a PhD program only to discover I did not enjoy my field. I bought and read several of the popular career titles such as the Parachute book but did not find most of them particularly helpful. The exception was The Pathfinder. I read through all the reviews of it this morning and the one word that shows up in many of them is "brilliant", the best single word to describe this book. The author says that in order to have a career you love it needs to fit your "natural" talents and your personality perfectly, allow you to do work that comes most naturally to you. In addition, it must be in a field you care about, fulfill your goals and put you in a workplace environment that suits you well. I noticed that the few negative reviews of this book mostly complain that it is too long. I disagree. I found the whole book to be very useful. It is long because picking a career that fits is not easy. The book challenges you to reach toward a career that is not a compromise and shows you how to do so. It takes you through many exercises that help you discover what would make a career fit you perfectly. It teaches you how to deal with the obstacles that get in the way, most of which are self-generated internal voices that tell you to avoid risk. It takes you all the way through to the final goal.
I called the author's Rockport Institute today and got to speak with him. It turns out that this organization created the field of career coaching nearly thirty years ago and does constant research on what it takes to pick a career that fits. No wonder this is better than the other books.

5 out of 5 stars Get Ready to Meet Yourself......Finally!.......2007-08-12

This book is not meant to be read overnight, but rather a guide to wake-up to everyday as you step yourself closer to the who, what, and when you really are. This book provides the "How" of getting there. Ranging from recalling your childhood dreams, discovering where you are at on your life's timeline, meeting the different parts of yourself all the way to ultimately waking up one day (for me, two years later) and realizing a vocation that fits you like your own fingerprints. This is a labor of love of discovering yourself with Nick (the author)along side you as you reflect and laugh along the way. I recommend this book highly....provided you value yourself enough to dig in and do the self-work involved in this type of journey.

2 out of 5 stars Too long and windy!.......2007-08-03

I bought this book because it had a high 4.5 star rating in Amazon. I have been extremely disappointed. The author of this book must be in love with his own voice. I get the sense that the book was dictated. It wheezes on for over 350 pages. The text is like an endless blog.
Years ago, I read What Color is Your Parachute? That was a good book! Buy that one--instead of Pathfinder....unless you like endless pontification.

3 out of 5 stars test in the book.......2007-06-06

hi - i actually wanted to give this test ..but not sure of...there are some tests already in the book...does this test provide much more?

4 out of 5 stars Innate Ability battery.......2007-04-24

I did the innate ability battery recommended by this book and I feel a lot clearer on what I am good at, not good, at and different ways to think about myself and what might make me happy. This one clued me in in a very comprehensive way. If you are confused about what would make you happy, fulfilled, goal-oriented etc, then take this test. The other tests other than myers-briggs are not too useful. (I also did the whole workbook of what color is my parachute a couple years ago but this test feels more like knowledge I can build upon.) The cost to do the test is high but the value I feel I will get is equal plus the discussion I had with the counselor made me feel like I was talking to someone who understood where I was coming from. I would like to do more personal counseling but the book will have to do and I look forward to answering the questions to figure it out. ( i don't work for anyone or am related to anything regarding this book)

Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

5 out of 5 stars Has history been tampered with?.......2007-10-23

Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/RAZQNMXM4M9CL Has history been tampered with? Yes, it has! Did events and eras such as the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, the Roman Empire , the Dark Ages, and the Renaissance, actually occur within a very different chronology from what we've been told? Yes, they certainly did!

The history of humankind is both drastically shorter and dramatically different than generally presumed.

Why is it so? On one hand, it was usual custom to justify the claims to title and land by age and ancestry, and on the other the court historians knew only too well how to please their masters. The so called universal classic world history is a pack of intricate lies for all events prior to the 16th century. World history as we learn it today was entirely fabricated in the 16th-18th centuries. It's likely that nobody told you before, but

there is not a single piece of firm written evidence or artefact that is reliably and independently dated prior to the 11th century.

Naturally, after what you've learned in school and university, you will not easily believe that the classical history of ancient Rome, Greece, Asia, Egypt, China, Japan, India, etc., is manifestly false.

You will point accusing finger to the pyramids in Egypt, to the Coliseum in Rome and Great Wall of China etc., and claim, aren't they really ancient, thousands of years ancient? Well, there is no valid scientific proof that they are older than 1000 years!

The oldest original written document that can be reliably dated belongs to the 11th century!

New research asserts that Homo sapiens invented writing (including hieroglyphics) only 1000 years ago. Once invented, writing skills were immediately and irreversibly put to the use of ruling powers and science.

The consensual chronology we live with was essentially crafted in the 16th century by the Jesuits.

The world history was compiled from contradictory mix of innumerable copies of ancient Latin and Greek manuscripts and other irrefutable proofs delivered by late mediaeval astronomers that were cemented by the authority of writings of the Church Fathers.

Early in life, we learn about ancient history. Children love the magical lessons of history - they are like fairy tales. Teachers recite breathtaking stories; very soon We learn by heart the names and deeds of brave warriors, wise philosophers, fabulous pharaohs, cunning high priests and greedy scribes.

We learn of gigantic pyramids and sinister castles, kings and queens, dukes and barons, powerful heroes and beautiful ladies, emaciated saints and low-life traitors.

Ancient history is based documents, manuscripts, printed books, paintings, monuments and artefacts - called primary sources.

The problem is that neither these ancient documents, nor events described therein can be irrefutably dated, moreover they contradict each other for the most part.

When a school textbook tells us that Genghis Khan in year X or Alexander in year Y, have each conquered half of the world, it means only that it is so said in some of the written sources.

There are no answers to simple questions:

When were these primary sources written?

Where and by whom were these sources found?

It is wrongly presumed that ancient and medieval chronicles, written by Genghis Khan's or Alexander the Great contemporaries and eyewitnesses, are readily available. Actually, only sources written hundreds or even thousands of years after the events are there, compiled mostly in the 16th 18th centuries, or even later.

As a rule, these sources suffered considerable multiple manipulations, falsifications and distortions by editing. At the same time,

innumerable originals of ancient documents under various pretexts were destroyed in Europe under various pretexts.

The names of persons and geographical sites often changed meaning and location during the course of the centuries.

Geographical locations became clearly defined on maps only with the advent of printing.

This made possible the circulation of identical copies of the same map for purposes of the military, navigation, education and governance tasks.

Historians from Oxford say: "hey, everybody knows that Julius Caesar lived in the first century B.C.

`Julius Caesar' statement is only a point of view as

there is simply no irrefutable documentary proof that Julius Caesar or any other great name of antiquity ever existed.

Better than that - extremely rare sources that can be reliably dated back to the 10th-14th centuries A D, do not show the polished picture of classical history.

They show a picture both contradictory and confusing.

All methods of dating of ancient sources and artefacts are erroneous:

Radio-carbon C14 method produces dating with exactitude of plus minus 1500 years, therefore it is too crude for dating of events in historical timeframe!

The Almagest tractate, which lies as corner stone contemporary chronology, compiled in the 2nd century A D by Ptolemy, the founding father of astronomy, contains astronomical data of 9th to 16th century!

The Bronze Age,that has supposedly began 5000 years ago. Bronze is made of 90% copper and 10% tin, but the technology for tin extraction dates back to 14th century A D!.

All eclipses contained in manuscripts, like Thucydides one, relating 'ancient' events have exclusively medieval dating. All horoscopes cut in stone or painted in Egyptian temples, like Dendera have exclusively early medieval dating solutions.

Not quite what you have learned in school? Open your eyes, and, you will find sufficient proof to reach step by step the inevitable conclusion that the classical chronology is false and therefore, that the history of ancient and medieval world universally accepted today, is also false. Have a fresh outlook on everything said or printed about "ancient" and "enigmatic" Roman, Greek and Egyptian, medieval as well as all other "lost and found" civilizations.

Antiquity and Dark Ages are phantoms invented in the 16th 18th and polished in 19th 20thcenturies. Human civilization is in fact barely 1000 years old!

This book will change your perception of History forever!
What if Ancient Rome, Greece and Egypt were invented during Renaissance?
What if The Old Testament was a rendition of events of the Middle Ages?
What if Jesus Christ was born in 1053 and crucified in 1086 AD?
Sounds Unbelievable?
Not after you've read "History: Fiction or Science?" by Anatoly Fomenko, the genius mathematician.
Armed with astronomy and computers Anatoly Fomenko turns History into a rocket science.

3 out of 5 stars Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
